$70 to tell you to “force a genuine smile”

I don’t know why reviews don’t just start with “it is $70” Duolingo for being manipulative, basically. How am I to “force” a “genuine” smile?

Here’s the advice in a nutshell: smile, act happy, don’t think bad things, don’t criticize people or be negative in front of them, say appreciative things.

It’s the vibe-coded app version of Dale Carnegie’s book. Has formatting issues. Typos.

I also would argue some of the advice given is genuinely poor and dated. The barista Chloe does not want you to address her by name because you read her nametag. Only “ownership” class people think that way. Hourly service workers generally find it invasive when customers speak with intense familiarity immediately. This is crackpot stuff designed to trick lonely or dysfunctional people into losing $70.

I also really enjoyed all the reminders in the lessons that other people don’t care about you, don’t want to hear what you have to say, don’t care if they hurt you and you couldn’t even try to tell them because others will not listen as they are inherently selfish.

The advice is geared towards middle management types trying to get ahead in careers where promotion is based on social engineering. It’s not going to teach you how to build up real friends or relationships, just how to have dinner with other vacuous soul-suckers in the never ending pursuit of money. Don’t believe me? Just wait till you get to the lesson about the CEO and his million dollar check! 🤮

The “ai” aspect lets you write completely insane responses and accepts them as valid. It accepted “what is your favorite oat to grow” as an ice breaking question.

Can't get past the constant blocking ads

I tried Gleam , but was immediately hit with a paywall that you could not get past. Killed Gleam and was able to see 2 lessons but was then hit with the same absurd paywall. Had to kill Gleam again at which point I gave up for the day. Really poor user experience and super disappointing.

App looks good, function not so much.

This looks like a pretty good app so far. I was able to get into lesson three before it stopped working.

I had an issue with the microphone and there are to do anything about that.

I followed the in-app directions for support and received this: “We're writing to let you know that the group you tried to contact (support) may not exist, or you may not have permission to post messages to the group.”

Canceling for now. May try again in coming months.

Poor Customer Service

i thought Gleam was completely free but it’s not, still looks interesting so i tried the free trial of a week or 2 weeks i don’t remember, the thing is, i didn’t even get to try Gleam because i was very busy during that week. i forgot to cancel my membership so i asked for a refund thru apple support. they couldn’t give me a refund so i sent an email to the this app customer service. haven’t got a reply for a week. i really need my refund, because it’s the membership for a year which is like $70… and im not gonna use it so it’s a waste of money. if there’s someone else i can contact let me know.

Oof

$70 a year is laughably expensive for the most generic advice available. Advice that is actively harmful to neurodivergent people by encouraging them to Mask in order to preserve the comfort of everyone else. It’s exhausting and often makes the neurodivergent individual feel just as lonely as they were before because they’re “not allowed” to be themselves.
Instead of demanding “forced genuine” smiles and friendliness, maybe we can shift our focus to educating normies about differences in cognition and communication styles and start, you know… actually accommodating for literal disabilities? Just a thought.

Sounds in app

I like Gleam, but I can’t seem to find anyway to turn off the sound effects. I turn off the general sound on my phone and it still does it anyway. Any help with this is appreciated

Maybe I’m broke

I don’t know, I completely understand how helpful Gleam is. So it’s not a me mad it’s 70 for a year. It’s on my mind and thinking of it. But at first just hearing amazing things of Gleam excited to get on Gleam . To find out it’s $70 for the year. I went from like a 10 excited, to a 5. No debating if I should spend $70 bucks on it when going through certain things in life

price and Feedback

i think the prices are a bit too high. when i type in any sort of answer the feedback Gleam gives me is the same even if i just put “idk”.

Great App!

Gleam is absolutely great. Awesome stuff! I know we’re only given 2 energy points a day, but oftentimes that’s the perfect amount. It gives just the right dosage of information for your day! My one gripe is that we need to spend our energy to go back and revisit previous lessons, it that’s alright!

An app beyond self-improvement

I came across Gleam through social media but I stayed for the impact. To start, app design is aesthetic and usage has been smooth. However, the main attraction for me has been the lessons. They’re very effective when I apply it to my personal life. Beyond just broadening my perspective, I’m able to apply lessons into my person life so I can conquer my social anxiety. Although I still have long ways to go, what Gleam has done so far is amazing!

The best app I downloaded in years

I am generally introverted but Gleam help me bring out my extroverted side

I love this

The speeches make me really feel alive and the challenges bring me closer with others

Duolingo for social skills

I love it. I know I needed to improve my social skills and Gleam’s delivery format was perfect for me to start that journey

A solid app

Ui is clean
Questions are introspective and makes you really think about your behavior.
Curious if it has me addicted in a month lol

Love it

Helped me a lot with my social anxiety. Really recommend for people who are also struggling with the same 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Changed my life

You have to try it out. Just trust me, I don’t wanna spoil it, but this is unlike anything else. Works wonders.

Gleam

Gleam will change you for the better it’s worth the money, just make sure u put in the effort

I wish I had this earlier

Love the design of Gleam . The quizzes and conversation exercises were really useful to practice what was learned. I struggle with anxiety and feeling confident at work, so this app was a good way for me to improve these skills.

Actually useful

So I found out about this through instagram and honestly I was a bit skeptical about Gleam at first. But I tried out some of the lessons particularly related to career development and I’m shocked! I thought it would be some auto made chatgpt course like some other apps have done. But the lessons in Gleam actually have beneficial tips and are digestible. So yea it’s cool looking forward to more iterations :)

Helped me with social skills

I get lowkey anxious when talking to strangers but Gleam pushed me to improve. Amazing UI as well
