We Investigate the app owner's website (Pocket.science), verify their legitimacy, and uncover hidden scams and complaints.
There are no instructions, and both the “developer website” and “support” links take you to an essentially content-less map full of dots.
The first time I ran it it responded “Invalid, try again.” No explanation.
The second time... “Too dark for device.”
YOU HAD ONE JOB.
App does not provide any reading other than “too dark for device” when I travel to dark site locations and DarkSkyMeter constantly freezes when trying to use the conditions feature.
I have an iPhone 6. It's not working well for me. It constantly says "It's not dark yet", and under the "readings" tab none of my previous readings are listed.
DarkSkyMeter only seems to have a hand full of people uploading in my state. It doesn't seem to show much of anything. I see a few uploads but not in the spectrum of colors shown in the legend. Darkskyfinder website is much much better and free.
This was a great app so don't know what has happened to the developer. It worked wonderfully on my 5s but refuses to open on my iOS 6. If it is not going to be fixed at least take it out of DarkSkyMeter Store so we can stop hoping for a fix.
DarkSkyMeter seems to be designed for iPhone 1
The camera area displayed on screen is just 1 x 1 pixel dimension, developer of DarkSkyMeter, haven't you heard about AutoLayout?
The operations that go to networks don't seem to work. Are you using http only traffic? That doesn't work anymore in latest iOS versions.
I cannot even switch the camera to decide if I want to use front or back camera. It would be so much easier to use the front camera, face the phone flat to the surface and follow the instructions.
I've tried (on an iPhone 4) DarkSkyMeter at two sites. Both were urban/suburban transition. At one I got a reading of 19.8 while the sky had a NELM of 4.2; at the other, with a NELM of 4.5 (and a bright 1st quarter moon) it gave a a reading of 23.8(!).
I don't expect much for 0.99$, but these readings are so far from reality that I must recommend against.
Since I got my iPhone 6 I am unable to even open up DarkSkyMeter. I have updated to the latest version and reinstalled several times but with the same problem. Am I the only one who has this problem? I do not see any other complaints for this.
I had used this at home in Bortle class 6 area and the readings seemed reasonable. Then I took it to a dark site, listed as one of the darkest areas in the continental US. I got multiple failures from DarkSkyMeter , and finally it gave me a reading of bright suburban sky. At this point I gave up. I do not believe DarkSkyMeter is trustworthy
DarkSkyMeter isn't made for iPhone 4 and doesn't really support it. It fails to even make a measurement most of the time, but doesn't say why--perhaps I didn't hold it perfectly still, at the perfect angle? I don't know. On the rare event I succeeded in taking measurements, if I submitted the reading, DarkSkyMeter promptly crashed. Every single time. Classy.
I wish I could get my dollar back!
If you are looking for an app to tell you how dark areas are- it’s is VERY dependent on others and it’s doesn’t tell you your location. It asks YOU to take a photo to send to others.
I’m not sure it’s working on my new iPhone. It kept giving me an error code that it was TOO DARK! It was one of the clearest dark sky nights last night and I really wanted to log it into the data.
I like DarkSkyMeter . It does well. The latest update doesn't seen to pull weather forecasts. Wish it would keep measurements longer or when restored to a new phone.
I've had good results with this on my iPhone5s. The results seem relatively reliable and consistent with dedicated SQM meters. Definitely well worth the price!
However, many members of my astronomy club have tried this on their iPhone6/6 Plus and are finding the results are very inconsistent and completely useless.
Dark Sky Meter is the first app for iPhone to allow users to accurately measure the brightness of the night sky. Amateur astronomers and dark sky advocates are likely familiar with the Sky Quality Meter (SQM) device. DarkSkyMeter gives you an SQM in your phone and for the 4S and 5 gives very accurate results without having to buy an SQM. DarkSkyMeter is well worth the purchase price.
DarkSkyMeter helps you measure the night sky brightness with a press of a button.
DarkSkyMeter along with info on their web site is a real boon. In my experience it is quite accurate and useful in comparing observing sites. However it appears it saves only your most recent recordings which is too bad. Also until just recently it has a second benefit of reporting local predicted seeing and transparency as now I cannot get it to report. It has been a great app! I very much hope it is not on its way out. Get DarkSkyMeter and support a very useful tool!
Works great on my iphone 6, it helps me alot.
DarkSkyMeter works great, very efficient, keep up the good work.
I noticed sky conditions at my observing locations varied and I wanted to test this, and was looking for a tool. DarkSkyMeter performs very nicely and I see the variability quantified according to a standard scale. Also developer very friendly and helpful. I’m going to use this to map out all my observing locations. Well done.
Dark Sky Meter appears generally safe, but use with caution.
