Avoid this developer- unfair biz practices

I bought CalorieCounter years ago as a one time purchase before they moved to a subscription model. Rather than just add a new app to CalorieCounter store with better features for subscription while leaving those who purchased it the option to keep their paid app or move to the upgraded subscription version at cost, they updated the original app and treated former customers like me as though I never paid outright for the use of the original app. Disrespectful indeed! In order to get features I had in the paid app, they wanted me to upgrade to a subscription! I refused as I wondered what else they’d take later if I did that. I wrote them and got no response, no resolution, no refund, nothing. Imagine my surprise (not!) browsing through apps years later and happening upon it again, only to see a complaint by someone else where they got no response after they updated and wound up losing former functionality and gaining a hefty price tag!

This company has horrible business practices and I just wanted to second what the other angry user said because after all this time, they’re still doing the same thing! Even if they offered them to be grandfathered in (I doubt that wasn’t just for show because reviews can be seen by the public), I say BUYER BEWARE!

I wanted to like this app

I upgraded to pro so I could use the smart points option. There was no way to preview this in free version. It took less than 24 hours to realize not what I needed The overly complicated steps to try and “tag” something for zero points is ridiculous. There’s no easy way to change something. I canceled the subscription within 24 hours. I didn’t expect this to be an exact duplicate of CalorieCounter I was trying to replace. I’m OK with learning something new. I’m just annoyed with the promises of being similar to what I needed with paid upgraded. Give a two day or three day trial. Seeing “ In a future update, we plan on adding…” in the help section is frustrating.

With all of my frustration, I think CalorieCounter is good as a stand-alone product. It’s just NOT a good replacement for WW app IMO. For me it’s a one star, but could work for others.

Not like it used to be... :(

I purchased CalorieCounter a few years ago and I had access to everything. Now, they update CalorieCounter and lock me out of almost everything. I refuse to pay a monthly fee for something I already purchased. I think the right thing to do, would be to “grandfather in” the members who bought CalorieCounter years ago.
When I spoke to their agent, they told me I have been getting free service long enough and if I want full access, I would have to pay the monthly fee. ...RUDE
Also, the point values aren’t accurate when you save the dinner in the “meal” section. I brought this up, and they gave a song and dance that didn’t make any sense.
A few years ago, I would give 5 stars, but today, I give one...for not supporting and caring for your past members who helped you grow CalorieCounter...shame on all of you.

Limited services and customization

I bought the year subscription after having limited selection in using CalorieCounter . After buying the subscription I realized that I can only use CalorieCounter with a VPN (I live in China). The barcode scanner has never worked even on products from America. The food search is extremely limited in what is already available. And the point system doesn’t really seem to make sense as it was never clearly explained how the points are used to decipher your meals or foods. I have been using another app that is free with a possible subscription, that has much more accessibility and customization however the cost of the subscription is more expensive. The reason I bought this subscription was because of the price but then I found out that it was pretty useless in comparison to the other application I am using.

Disrespecting their customers.

Like so many who have given CalorieCounter one star, I bought CalorieCounter as a one time purchase a few years ago. I am now going to find out if there’s an option to complain to the iTunes Store about this company’s business practices. I was sold one thing, then, about a year ago, I get an “update” that takes features that I previously paid for and locks them behind a pay wall. My husband luckily never updated his app and he still has the points calculator and the meal builder & other features, with no monthly subscription. How unfair is that? I understand the company wants to make money, but this was deceptive. I would love to know if it’s possible to restore CalorieCounter as I purchased it through iTunes. I plan to research that. When it happened, I sent an inquiry to the company through the “contact us” in CalorieCounter . No one ever reached out to me. It’s a shame because I would have given CalorieCounter as I purchased it a high rating. It’s not worth the price of a subscription though. Not even close. They should have raised the one-time purchase price, so only new customers would be affected.

Frustrated!

I initially liked CalorieCounter a lot when I first purchased it! It met all my needs and did all it promised to do.
Then suddenly it will no longer work correctly with my fit bit app. Originally the apps linked fine...now it is hit and miss. If I want CalorieCounter to sync with Fitbit I have to go into permissions and then some times it will sync sometimes it doesn’t. When it does sync it will not correct previous days. I have contacted administrator 3 times! After the 3rd time I got a generic response saying they are looking into it. I have not heard anything since. It is still not working. I bought a year subscription and will not be renewing if this does not get corrected!

Knock-off WW app that wants you to pay WW prices?!

I purchased CalorieCounter about two years ago because it was one flat fee and I got pretty much everything that I was getting with the weight watchers app and membership, without the ridiculous membership.
Now, they have taken away features and want to charge their own ridiculous membership fees to allow it to function as it once did. I’m very disappointed in the shady practices.
If you don’t mind paying a low flat fee for just a basic tracker, then this would be fine. If you are looking for a knock-off weight watchers app don’t waste your money here because you might as well pay the crazy WW prices to get what you want from the source.

Cant TAKE features I Bought and charge me for them

I paid for CalorieCounter and a set of features. Developer decided to upgrade. No issue, I’ll pay for new features. Locking me out of features in the version I paid for is not an option. So far, they are silent about my request to communicate.

Previous 4 Star Review
Great so Far
I've used CalorieCounter for a couple of weeks. I used to use Weight Watchers (WW), but they are mining their good will, instead of maintaining their app. This one gives me the points plus I liked so much. Many features are superior to the WW app, especially the speed of online lookup. It is harder to create and track your meals. I wish CalorieCounter had more reporting capabilities, import recipes, use boolean search and allow tracking of more than the 4 nutritional values. CalorieCounter returns to the Weekly Summary every time, and I wish it let me choose Diary instead. This is the best app I've found, losing 2-3 lbs a week and feeling good about it. I am happy with my purchase.

Great app with lots of inaccuracies

And missing macro nutrition info.
In all honestly, I hate to give the low review since CalorieCounter has some great futures and is generally easy to use. But working with CalorieCounter on daily basis can result in frustration.

A few examples are: I couldn’t find “hard boiled egg white”... I found a lot of items, but not what I was looking for. I am sure I would have find it eventually, but the basics should be on the top of the list.
Scanning barcode is a great and easy way to add foods until you find it is not accurate and the nutritional values are not the same on the package. This is actually risky for people like myself with health issues that can get worse if I don’t pay attention.

One more small annoyance is after you are adding food after search. You gotta tap to clear the search box, then tap on cancel than tap on done. I am sure there’s a better way around all the extra tapping.

I hope that they will fix these issues with time, I will edit my review and score accordingly.

Points changing when you scan ??

I have been in the points plus for a couple years . That works for me. I know enough to know what the old points values were. However when I scan items they now come in at values higher than before. Same product no changes . I think it’s putting in the smart points amounts instead of point plus . Mucks up everything and then since you don’t eat enough your body decides it’s starving and you don’t lose weight . What gives with the different points ? You can look these up in the “food” and the correct points are there. Just much quicker to scan if only it worked right .

Automatically charge for Premium and only showing basic.

Updated March 13, 2020

After my last review, in took weeks for a response. CalorieCounter no longer logs correctly and does not sync with my Apple Watch. It logs all today’s food as tomorrow. Yesterday’s food as today. I’ve tried many times to reach out to them and nothing. The screen keeps freezing when I try to contact them. Beyond frustrated.

CalorieCounter was pretty good. I woke up this AM, I was charged automatically to renew, fine. But basic plan is only showing. When I tried to reach out for support, “no such file etc”. I’m beyond frustrated. If this isn’t fixed quickly, I’m disputing

So grateful for this app

After Weight Watchers changed their program from Points Plus to Smart Points, I wanted to continue tracking Points Plus since I had lost 85 pounds on that program and didn’t want to change. Weight Watchers did not give the option of staying with Points Plus so I started looking for an app so I could continue with Points Plus. This was the perfect solution for me and I have been using it successfully for 5 years now. The only drawback to CalorieCounter is that it is sometimes difficult to match the description with the serving size. Thanks for continuing to offer CalorieCounter to all of us loyal Points Plus followers!

This is good points!

CalorieCounter. Is great and it does a great job of keeping track of my points and the food I eat. I like that is keep track of my weight and add in when I add points after I exercise. I do like CalorieCounter. and if you decide to add something else to CalorieCounter. then add it, it won't bother me.👍🏼👍🏼😊💪🏼🏃🏽. Again what can I say but, good things for CalorieCounter. I won't dump this for any other app. I've lost a good amount of weight with CalorieCounter. and weight watchers too!👍🏼👍🏼😊💪🏼💪🏼⭐️⭐️. Still a great app. but, I wish I could lose the weight like I hope but, I keep trying. Don’t change anything else on CalorieCounter. okay, I like what is on CalorieCounter..

The issue I was having has been resolved, the developer reached out to me and made it happen !!!!’

I was a year long user and had been inactive for 4-5 months and wanted to start over. I tried to sign in and hit the. Rick wall of subscription or stop. Sorry to see that, it was a pretty useful app, but I am unable to reset/change my goals without a subscription. I will look elsewhere and will not recommend CalorieCounter anymore.

Update: I have full functionality and I will be starting again, I have fallen off the wagon and found myself in greener pastures and consequently have ballooned up to my previous starting point. CalorieCounter works, I was able to lose 60 pounds, follow the instructions and you will lose weight. Thanks Christian !!!!!

Great app

I’ve been using CalorieCounter for many years now to help me lose weight after pregnancies. It’s easy to use and has a lot of menu items available for many, many restaurants. It makes calculating points and making better choices a breeze. My favorite feature is being able to create meals for things I eat fairly regularly. I had to contract customer service once to restore my purchase and they were kind, quick and efficient. I recommend CalorieCounter to everyone!

Protracker Plus

I’ve been in weight watchers many years so I know the program. WW made many changes and it’s expensive. Plus they suddenly erased all my data on their tracking app after a change without any warning and I couldn’t get all my information back. I love Oprah and appreciate so much that she is the leader. I feel that I am still in WW, but I can stay on my points plus and it keeps me in control. That is when I found Protracker. One small purchase and I was in business. I like it because it is based on a program similar to points plus in WW, which is where I left off. If I were new to WW, I would use their program because you get so much support and valuable resources. I am enjoying CalorieCounter very much appreciated and helpful in so many ways. I can look up my own recipes and find support in other ways. And I am very committed. Happy tracking. 😘👍🏼

Wonderfully complete and user-friendly app!

As a long-time user of CalorieCounter, I have nothing but praise for it! I no longer go to WW so I needed an app to use w/o a membership. CalorieCounter has given me a place to keep track of my eating using “Weight Watcher” points. But it does so much more!

1) It allows me to create meals and then reuse them in my daily eating.
2)It tracks and diagrams my weight.
3)It breaks down, analyzes and charts my eating so I have a visual of how much I am eating at each meal and also how much protein fat and carbs I am eating.
4)It allows me to decide what I want my far/carb/protein breakdown to be.
5) it allows me to record my activities
6) it syncs with my iPhone health app
7) it tracks your water consumption

There is really so much that it does that I know I am forgetting something. I heartily enjoy using it and truly recommend trying it out!

Instead if WW

I’ve had great success with WW in the past. But, as with most programs that encourage healthy eating and exercise, life happens and we backslide. ProTracker is an excellent and free alternative to WW. They provide a very easy way to identify points and track food. Though some point values may vary, they’re close enough to WW. They also allow you to add to your daily points by exercising. Like WW, you are provided a stash of bonus points that you can dip into on those “special” days. Very easy and worth a try.

Helps a lot

You can scan your items for easy entry. There’s a visual for where you are in meeting your macros and for calorie proportions per meal. And you can save items you’ve entered for easy reentry. I’d love the other specs like iron amount but I understand them putting that on the paid version. I still use it to help me track almost daily and am already making progress towards my weight goal in just a week

Great Tracker

I’ve been a WW fan for years but their recent changes haven’t been good for me.
Even though I track I find I’m on a plateau or gaining slightly.
I was looking for the old fashioned Classic or Points plus tracker. With CalorieCounter you get your choice. Very surprised st how good it is especially with the database of foods
It also syncs activity from my Apple Watch!
So far so good and will look at the upgrade soon
