In spite of other reviews

I cannot give MusicTutorSightreading a good rating. It does not give you a grand staff option so notes are often falling on little lines drawn above or below and it just doesn’t give you a look that you will typically see when you play music. When you press a note, it makes the sound of the next note it would like you to press. This is just horrible for ear training and I’m flabbergasted that they have not fixed this and/or there is not a big outcry from app users. You can remedy this by muting the sound on MusicTutorSightreading and running a piano app in the background. Also the fact that you cannot do landscape mode is a big hindrance unless you can work through Bluetooth (not sure if that’s possible, but my keyboard cannot do it so it doesn’t matter). So your headphones and lightning adapter make it difficult to keep the iPad steady. To top it all off, it crashes nearly every time you play a round on a iPad 6. I just cannot figure out for the life of me why this gets good ratings. I bought an app that’s half the price that gets everything right except landscape mode. Avoid this. It’s overpriced, poorly implemented and underdeveloped.

Get the ad-free version

It’s the best note-teaching app I’ve had, but I would have given it 5 stars if it didn’t have as much ads. Every time I do a session, once it finishes it gives me an ad. And it’s not like the ads have any variety either. They are all for “Simply Piano” or something like that. And this piano thing isn’t even an app that JSplash made. There are adds EVERYWHERE and I can’t get a break from them. Good app, though. Learned all the notes my teacher told me to learn in 10 minutes. Not bad of an app. It rarely glitches, too. It’s pretty nice.
In conclusion, it’s a good app, but get the ad-free version.

Great premise, clunky interface

The premise of MusicTutorSightreading is great. In just a few short sessions I feel that I’ve made a ton of progress in learning notes on the staves. Unfortunately the interface of MusicTutorSightreading is a little clunky and leaves a lot to be desired where design / graphics are concerned. The only functional additions I would like to see implemented is an option that lets you display both the piano keys and the letters of those keys at the same time. Currently you can either guess the notes by letter OR key on the piano, but not both. The other improvement I would recommend would be since the staves cover three lines above and below the main staff, I would love to expand the keys / letters to include the entire range of octaves being quizzed. Last, I would love to have both treble and bass staves on the screen at the same time rather than switching between the two.

It’s working for me, but needs one important improvement

I’m really psyched that this is clearly helping me learn to read music. That said, when practicing with ledger lines, it’s super mentally confusing to map three octaves of notes from a staff to a single octave on a keyboard. The game should allow a rotation of the phone (into landscape mode) to show more octaves on the keyboard. Then a C that’s an octave below another C would map to the lower note on the keyboard, not the same key, for example.

Best note teacher, buy the ad-free

This is the best note teaching app. I have tried many. The speed at which it’s presented is great. Has a great look. Tons of settings.

Upgrade to ad-free, it’s worth it.

To the developer, I’d heavily recommend adjusting the default range settings to more usual note ranges (treble and bass), as I know many typical iPhone users won’t have the patience to tweak settings and will be turned off by the initial settings.

Also, the only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the amount of ads was insane, much more than average. It somewhat turned me off from MusicTutorSightreading initially but $2 is nothing so I bought it and a few others and this one is the best, amazing without the chokingly constant ads. I’d recommend ads for every other practice session instead of every session. The deceptively similar-UI-looking ads on the bottom were quite annoying as well. I know it’s hard to find that right balance of as many ads as possible while not turning customers away from annoyance. So maybe you’ve made the right choice, idk.

Great app, would love two more features

I’ve been reading music (treble and bass) for decades now, but recently picked up viola, and am frustrated with my lack of fluency with alto clef, so downloaded MusicTutorSightreading a few days ago. So far, I love it! The time ticking down adds a bit of pressure, similar to trying to read music in a group, where you can’t spend forever figuring out what note you’re supposed to play. I also enjoy being able to look at the stats to see how long it really takes to identify the notes. I do wish for a couple features, though:

1) The ability to limit to only lines or spaces for a session, or to be able to select specific pitches, rather than a range.

2) More detailed stats. Are there particular notes that I always misidentify, or certain ones it takes me longer to identify? What about one clef vs another?

Those two features would make this an AMAZING (rather than simply great) tool, as you could then identify your trouble spots, and then set it to drill you specifically on those spots.

Amazing way to learn!!

I’ve played in treble clef all of my life, but I recently picked up cello, which is in bass clef. I thought it would be hard and confusing trying to learn it, since I assumed I would confuse the notes with treble clef notes. But then my teacher recommended MusicTutorSightreading! It made it so much easier to learn how to read, and with the competitive aspect of it, I was having fun while learning! If there was one thing to improve, is maybe to include flash cards? I think that would be pretty cool! But yes! Amazing app!

Great for my slug of a brain.

I didn’t pay a dime for this, but the “ads” are nothing compared to the unskippable, multileveled 60s ads on other apps. To put it simply, I’m really enjoying how quickly I can start a sight-reading test, finish, and get in another.

The test itself is easily customizable and super valuable to me (a 23-year-old, RUSTY piano player, who WAS pretty good 5+ years ago and since has gained brain fog, stress, anxiety and wrinkles under my eyes).

Much prefer opening this to instagram.

It’s a great tool

My daughters and I thought it would be fun to learn piano together. MusicTutorSightreading definitely helps to learn and identify music notes, however it doesn’t do much for identifying the actual keys on the piano itself. What we do is look at the note and press the key on our piano before going onto the next one to help identify the note as well as which key it is on the piano. I really do think MusicTutorSightreading is great but would be way better if it could listen to your piano so that you could press the right keys as it goes.

Perfect for practicing sight reading!

I love MusicTutorSightreading for practicing my sight reading, it has been great for me every step of the way. Good for tracking your progress and getting some practice whether it’s on the fly or for extended periods of time. I started with the free version and ended up paying for it, so much more better with out the ads and it seems a bit better than the free version. Overall I would recommend it to everyone who is practicing reading music or sight reading- whether it’s a beginner or a classically trained musician this is great!

The true needed connection between seeing and playing

Most teachers fail at teaching musical notation because they miss the fundamental connection between the notes and the instrument.
MusicTutorSightreading helps you do just that. An instant connection between the note and their respective key on the keyboard. Forget about Every Good Boy mnemonics because Every Boy Gets confused. That’s a useless antique practice. Use MusicTutorSightreading instead.

Suggestion: Do the same thing for chords, triads and arpeggios and you will become the #1 app in the musical world.

Great!

After trying countless apps and almost giving up, this is a great app to learn music notes and practice. The only thing I would recommend is giving me the option to see correct answer. Right now, when I click on the wrong answer, right answer is only displayed for a second and sometimes I don’t get the chance to see it.
Also a badge system might be a nice gamification add. The leaderboard doesn’t realy motivate but maybe a badge system or even streaks could help.

Thanks, great app!

This app does wonders for my students!

It took me a long time to find an app for learning notes/flash cards and there are no apps that compare - This is a great app that is perfect for teaching students to read music notation quickly. I really like how easy it is to set it up for what level they are at. I have a few things that I would love to see happen because I think it would make the learning experience better, even though MusicTutorSightreading is completely functional already!!
1. I would love to see an option to make it a grand Staff where both treble and bass clef are shown the whole time when a note pops up.
2. I think making it so that it doesn’t change notes so quickly when they click on one. This would be so that they can see what note they pressed and if it was right or wrong. If it was wrong, they can compare it to the one they did hit and then maybe click continue when they are ready. (Right now they have no time to see what note was wrong until the end and I think it would be beneficial to learn better.)

I really love MusicTutorSightreading and it would be incredible to see some of these things in effect so more students can learn music easily. Thanks for making a wonderful resource!

Amazing way to learn notes for starters and advanced

This is an amazing app for kids and adults who would like to learn notes. In options you can always change how far your note range is and what clefs you would like. I also like that you don’t have to do treble bass and alto clefs at different times you could choose to do some at the same time. A great thing that they added sound light effects and flats and sharps. For example you could choose not to have sound but if you do it makes the sound of the note and flashes green quickly if you get it right. If you press it incorrect it will flash red quickly and make sort of an errrrr sound. You could also have the choice of flats and sharps if you would like to. Another major thing is that you get scored by accuracy, points, and how many notes you got correct and a chart of your points for that round. When you finish a round and you get something incorrect it will show you a view mistakes button so you could see what you did wrong and get the right answer next time. The last thing is that you could choose fore how long you would like to practice, you would get a choice of one minute, five minutes, ten minutes or infinity. MusicTutorSightreading for practice is great. Enjoy!

Needs a longer pause with errors

I did not realize that you could hold your choice of note to get longer feedback on whether your choice was correct. I was just tapping the piano keys, and was annoyed that the feedback did not last long enough to see. When you are trying to go fast, however, you sometimes release a key too quickly to perceive the feedback. Could there perhaps be an option, at least during the practice phase, to sustain the ‘red’ feedback when you make a mistake? If you don’t get time to see both what key you chose, and which you should have chosen, the learning is slower, I think.

This app is awesome......however

MusicTutorSightreading is awesome to help you learn the notes on both the treble clef and bass clef by heart. But if you're used to the older version, this update will seem to drag a bit. For whatever reason I used to consistently get 60 or more notes correct per minute. Not able to do that with the latest app update. Just seems to drag a bit. Not a big deal if you're new to MusicTutorSightreading . You'll be able to still track your progress. But if you were improving with the older version, you'll feel like your quickness of recognizing and hitting the note is much slower. Great app for what it's built for. I'm just disappointed with the slight drag conmpared to the older version.

Starting to read notes faster

I read some online article about MusicTutorSightreading and I'm impressed with the simplicity. When I was a kid, my piano teacher taught me two sayings and didn't understand until now. Watching only the spaces between the 5 main lines from bottom to top - Left hand: ACEG (all cows eat grass) then every time you go above or below the 5 lines, All Cows Eat Grass becomes the lines instead of the spaces. Right Hand: FACE. Same rule applies above and below the 5 lines, switch FACE to the lines instead of spaces. Hope this make sense! Starting to read much quicker now thanks to MusicTutorSightreading. I went from an average of 12 seconds to 6 in less than a week. Trying to read as fast as 1 second so I can play piano off of sheet music faster. Thank you for this free app!!!

Learning fun

MusicTutorSightreading has been great for me to practice learning treble scale as I could not read music before. It lets you know if you messed up by flashing red and after each session you can look at your mistakes to see what you did wrong to try to improve. My first day I did 15 notes a minute and got half of them wrong. Two weeks later and my last session was 151 notes with two mistakes (and one of those was my finger biting the wrong button).

Things I would like to see improved. More explanations about what things are or why to choose a certain scale or even just links to wiki If I realize I messed up before I raise my finger I would like to be able to change my answer. To be able to delete a quiz in the middle of it so it doesn’t count if I need too.

None of these things are deal breakers and I love MusicTutorSightreading .

Set aside time for this.

I’ve never found a more fun way to improve sight reading. If you aspire to learn music and improve your sight reading, something I was horrible at, MusicTutorSightreading, which will become a game later, will help you so much! I said it will become a game later because you will tend to feel you need to challenge your last score to see how to beat your self the last time. Mistakes you make will make you crack a smile because you will know you shouldnt have made that mistake cuz you knew better. After playing this for some time, I decided to write a review, something I dont do, because I saw how much this helped me more than anything I’ve every tried before, and I know it can help you too. Thanks to the developers, I cant thank you enough for this. Music lessons are expensive, but it seems you know well the struggle of learning and money it takes to learn. You have my eternal thanks!!!

Making it possible to read sheet music.

I must say that as a musician, I have had struggles reading music notes. So I installed this so that I can test my skills and improve my reading abilities. Two days of using it and I already remember the notes and now am able to see the notes like never before. Thank you for making MusicTutorSightreading and making it possible to train us newer musicians. Truly grateful for this. Please! If you are struggling to read or to even see the notes. Get MusicTutorSightreading! It is legitimately helpful and helps me (someone with bad memory) how to remember which notes are which. It’s worth the time, I promise!
