3.1 out of 5
Nice idea, poor execution

Not clear if Sporty’s is serious about InstrumentPilotTestPrep. [Downgraded from two to one star because test supplement figures are poorly scanned and critical data often illegible.]

The basics are here to review a question bank, but there’s no real integration in tracking progress across various modules, reviewing flagged questions, etc. Reviews written five years ago easily still apply in Dec 2017. You get a free iPad cleaning cloth from Sporty’s, but would have to pay $7 shipping to receive.

It’s a decent enough way to answer a bunch of questions and see what subject areas are weakest, including taking a practice exam. Perhaps sporty’s doesn’t want to undercut its more expensive ground training apps, or stopped investing in improvements once the FAA stopped publishing the knowledge test bank.

I’m a CFII circling back to take my AGI and IGI written ten years later (for gold seal), so it will serve my purpose of identifying if/where I need to bone up prior to dropping $140 on CATS. But InstrumentPilotTestPrep probably isn’t too useful for any other purpose.

good idea badly delivered

Ive used alot of study apps, and sportys apps are always a problem. Mainly because they do not save your progress in your sessions. I tried some of their video apps too with the same problem. if for any reason you have to exit InstrumentPilotTestPrep you have to start all ove again when you come back. That is incredibly annoying. no student studies ALL of the study material in one session. Study Buddy also has lots of Platform irrelevant questions. I understand that questions about flight planning are on the tests, but who can use a plotter with their iphone?!?!?

Type Too Small

What happened? Last update now you can't read the answers in flash card mode. Who picked out the small light gray lettering against a light gray background

Not updated questions

InstrumentPilotTestPrep does not update about 117 questions.

Don't buy it!

InstrumentPilotTestPrep has the right idea, but it's not worth the money. While I was in the practice test mode I was presented with MANY questions which did not me all the required figures and charts to answer the question. This was very frustrating as you don't realize you don't have all the required info until after you have spent time calculating the info you do have just to find out you can't finish answering the question!! This problem was mostly on questions where you need to calculate the time of a flight, but I ran into it in other simpler problems as well (asking required climb rates without giving the chart to compute it). I use Dauntless software on my PC and bought this for the iPad because it was cheaper. Huge mistake. Dauntless gives MUCH better explanations of answers - not just the correct answer, but the why and how to get the correct answer (especially helpfully on flight planning questions). Don't waste your money on InstrumentPilotTestPrep. Sporty's could learn a thing or two from the Dauntless ground school app!

Commercial app

Already have private pilot and instrument app. The instrument app needs an update since the FAA has updated their question bank for the written test. I will not be purchasing the commercial pilot app if these updates are not released. Come on sportys! You're better than this.

Review

Almost useless without the save feature. My battery went dead, and all my marked questions are gone, and the questions appear in random order every time InstrumentPilotTestPrep is started so I cant even write the missed ones down on paper! How difficult can it be to save in memory at a minimum the marked questions for later review?? Now I have to start all the way from the beginning again just because I exited the application.

No save feature

This is a great app for studying for the written test but only if you want to do it all in one sitting. While it gives you the option to mark questions, as soon as you exit or restart your iPad / iPhone all your marked questions go away.

This would be a 5 star app if it let you save the questions you mark and then test you on only those you didn't know so you could learn every question in the question bank easily and efficiently.

Meh

I used Sportys for PPL and it was great. I tried it for IR and there were maybe 5-10 questions that were the same on that written. Make sure you have additional/supplemental knowledge if you are gonna use InstrumentPilotTestPrep.

Lost my test

I only had an hour to spend, but got a good way through my first practice test. Came back to it in a few days and my progress was gone - started me over in a new test!

Flash cards

App is ok. It has the questions and answers. Just nothing more. I would expect it to save your work. I don't know what the "mark" button does as it is not remembered or saved. Tests can't be changed to contain more or less questions. As I said, ok. More like first gen project, it works now if you want something more than a "c" grade show something more than a cookie cutter template. Harsh, yes, but true.

Mostly there

The interface is sufficient and the question database is complete, however my only complaint is that some of the questions are missing figures. This can be frustrating as some questions are impossible to complete, especially the ETE "box 10" type questions (missing STARs for one question in particular plus several others I've encountered). If I didn't already have a hard copy of the exam figures, InstrumentPilotTestPrep would not have helped me to learn how to do the ETE problems.

Save & Quit then Resume

The Save & Quit function is very helpful but finding the function to start where I left off wasn't where I expected. It's found in the Progress Reports/Resume Session on InstrumentPilotTestPrep 's Home page.

It has a simple and friendly layout.

Not bad

I used this in conjunction with the Gleim book. InstrumentPilotTestPrep is great when you're on the go. I had many questions on the actual exam that are presented in InstrumentPilotTestPrep. For actual sit down study time, I'd recommend a book or Video course, whichever works best for you.

Still the same app, but IOS 7 interface

I for one liked the old interface better. It was easier to see buttons and functions. Sometimes progress is not always forward..

Great for the instrument written!

Used this as my primary study tool for the instrument written, and used Sheppard air as
supplemental study material. Ended up scoring a 95%. Highly recommend

Basic refresher - Excellent value

No, not all the bells and whistles of the PC courses, but at 1/10th the cost this is a great app. The graphics pinch and zoom is much easier on the iPad than a PC mouse. I used the Gliem first time around (scored 92%) two years ago and InstrumentPilotTestPrep will easily help me regain that level of proficiency.

Great app!

Just took my test, scored 86. Bought InstrumentPilotTestPrep 2 months ago and most if not all my questions where on the test. Just be careful , FAA has put some tricky wording in the new exams.

Passed mine on to the commercial written

My study way of studying was by section. Also I would just press finish test to see the answers right then & there so I don’t overwork my brain, while saving time. P.s if you pass the instrument written, take the CFII written too. It’s pretty much identical

AMAZING!

I just passed my written using just InstrumentPilotTestPrep. Even after the FAA changed all the questions InstrumentPilotTestPrep had identical questions as the exam.
