Decent except for heavy map averaging

I first tried another app, but it insisted that you start the “free” 7 day trial of the paid version first. At least WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS does not do that.

The free version offers quite a bit including speed, map, keeping historical data, weekly monthly, etc running sums.

My one beef with WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS is that it does an overly heavy averaging of the gps location. As I am walking, the dot on the map keeps spot on. There is a blue trail that jumps up to the dot every 4-6 seconds, so that is the frequency of the position stored. When I go around a corner or turn around and head back, the blue line starts shifting for the next 4 or 5 “updates”. So it is averaging the points and overwriting data. The path ends up cutting through yards and even houses. There are a couple of settings affecting smoothing of the path, but no way to turn off the averaging. Since my current spot on the map is exactly right, I really don’t understand why WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS needs to do any averaging. (I’m glad my car’s guidance app doesn’t or I would be driving across a lot of parking lots.) I would much appreciate a choice to turn off the averaging and a choice of a higher position data record rate (1-2 seconds)

Mixed Feelings!

I’m not sure what it says about an app when you initially find it is less frustrating to use the Apple Workout App on your watch, and import the results for analysis, than it is to use WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS directly on the Watch. WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS seems to work fine when the Watch is set to record on the phone, but switching to record on the Watch causes it to feel like it has stopped working. The faces don’t show data and I keep getting text saying I need elite when I have it on the elite trial, and it feels unresponsive. The phone app interface is clean, but swiping though title-less pages, some of which are blank, feels like it is missing something. Fixing this and getting a personalized interface takes a lot of trial and error because it is not always clear what each page does and sometimes just changing font size creates havoc. For example, on the overview you get four pieces of data on small font and one piece on medium. I’ll renew the elite subscription because I like looking at the maps of my walks, and the data, and the Apple Fitness app is hopeless in that regard.

Not accurate

So, I don’t usually do reviews but since I’ve had such a difficult time with knowing the distance that I walk, I thought I’d share my experience with whoever is reading this.
So, I started power walking the same paths daily. I noticed about a month ago that the faster I would walk the same exact path, it would record less the amount of distance. I was noticing walking about 2 miles that I would get 1.6, 1.85, 2.2 and so on. I kinda didn’t think to much in to it. However on Monday (today is Wednesday) I forgot to turn my walking app until approx .5 mile in and my total distance was 3.08 The following day (Tuesday) I turned it on right as I hopped out of my car. My total distance that day was 2.88 miles, a lot less then mondays distance. So, I downloaded run keeper and today it came out to 3.4miles and proves that WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS is not accurate for some reason.
Maybe they need to update it because it should go by gps. Other then that I think the set up of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS is wonderful. It’s easy to use and haven’t had any issues having it run in the background as I play music, get on the internet, or text. Good app, just not accurate and I will be using run keeper from now on.

Pedometer not working

****** UPDATE - switched from four stars to five stars because of the excellent customer service which not only responded to my question, but also made a suggestion which fixed my problem. This has to be the best customer service I’ve ever experienced. Thank you so much. *****
I’ve been a faithful user of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for years so I decided to pay to upgrade. The pedometer (the main reason I wanted to upgrade) has never worked. Seeing the great developer response on here along with a support website, I wrote to that hoping for help. No response. Maybe I’ll receive one on here. I’d really like to be able to use it.

Great when it works

I have been using WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS to document my daily walks for a couple of years. I have NEVER had a perfect Activity month due to either an app crash or the Activity app doesn’t update when I hit the end button. I have already contacted WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS people who, of course, blamed the Activity app that came with the iPhone. That still doesn’t explain the crashes. It seems just stopping to take a picture is enough to do it. It’s frustrating knowing you did the walk, but not getting credit for it. Therefore, I am switching to another means of recording my walks until these issues are resolved.

Review update: after corresponding with Ronni from support we figured out the issue. I was trying to do too many things at one time so now I only have WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS open that I am currently using. Presto, no more issues. WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS has been working flawlessly since.

Suddenly inaccurate?

I have used WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for years, and happily paid for Elite. It’s been great. Today I went for a walk on a trail I’ve taken many times before. I was impressed at how much faster my speeds had gotten. But strange things were happening. I’d lock my phone, unlock it to check my progress, and suddenly it was telling me my mile pace was way way faster than it should have been. Leaving my phone unlocked, while not practical, helped a bit. When I finished my round trip on the trail, my numbers and splits were all better than I’d had before. Checked the map, and, for some reason Walkmeter is thinking a round trip on this hiking trail, a mile out and a mile back, is actually more like 2.3 miles. Only a few weeks ago Walkmeter was properly seeing this as a 2 mile walk. So my distance is way off, screwing up everything else. What is going on?

Good, but could use some improvements

I paid for the Elite level of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for one main reason - to be able to start and stop the timer from my Apple Watch. And of course to be able to glance at the elapsed time while walking. Starting and stopping WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS from my watch works about 75% of the time, but there are too many times I have to pull my phone out. I make sure to open WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS on my phone before I leave the house, but sometimes it still tells me to open it. Also, sometimes the info doesn’t transfer correctly to the Health and Activity apps.

Otherwise, WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS has way more info than I probably need, but I like seeing the distance, time, and map of each walk. So if there was better communication between the watch app and iPhone app I would give it 5 stars.

Paths are noisy and therefore too long

The idea behind WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS is great, and I like the interface as well. Unfortunately the paths it records are often *very* inaccurate and zig-zaggy and so wind up being too long, sometimes by 50% or more. This makes WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS pretty much useless for me, despite my wanting to like it.

Today, for example, I recorded over 3 miles for what I know to be a two-mile walk. Looking at the map, I could see why: where I had actually walked a straight-line path, the map showed numerous spurious loops and switchbacks. My supposed pace during this segment was 6 minutes/mile.

This may be due to inherent noisiness in the location information provided by the iPhone. If so, the solution would be to use much longer time intervals (e.g., 1-2 minutes) between samples. This would ensure that the actual distance walked between samples is relatively large compared to the inevitable slop in the location info.

The core of my workouts

In December 2017, I received a heart rate monitor as a gift, and decided to upgrade WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS to the full paid mode, to take full advantage of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS . I happy I did. Integration of the heart rate monitor was the key feature I wanted, the announcement system was the biggest and best surprise.

WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS does everything I could want, it tracks my hikes, records the miles, the climbs, my heart rate and feeds all the data back to me, it graphs, maps and charts.

I’ve tried a number of apps to follow my progress, from free to the fancy paid apps. None really work as well or provided the data I wanted.

The best feature I didn’t know I wanted is the voiced announcements, my phone tell me my heart rate every ten minutes and related information and every 1/2 tells my my distance and a few other keep pieces of data. This little feature is cool. While hiking I have the announcement come from the phone’s speaker, I keep in my camelpak (I don’t listen to music on the trails), while jogging it comes in over my Bluetooth headphones.

Walkmeter

Accurate and easy to use. Have not figured it all out yet, kind of clumsy when it comes to the instructional part of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS . Fortunately it is easy enough to use right after downloading. Done 3 races now and have not had a single problem. The one thing that would put WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS in a league of its own, is to allow for real time tracking for friends and family. Update are great. But not the same. Allowing user to pre-draw the route so others can follow, but it also allows user to visualize the route and know what is up ahead including hills and big turns. Love WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS .

Don't be misled by the app title

It's name suggests it's just for "walking". But I do ultra-marathons and average 200 miles a month. WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS, despite its name, offers awesome detail for the hardcore runner. I've had WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for over three years and swear by it. It's phone based and thus not dependent on a limited battery GPS watch. It provides extremely accurate distance measurement and records data at several levels - from cadence to pace to speed in mph to elevation gain and more. The distance numbers are consistently slightly under my Garmin measurements. The same is true with the elevation estimates. Despite this, I'm a huge fan of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS.

The Best work out app

I have had several walk/run apps over the years but I just came across Walkmeter and it’s fabulous!
It’s crisp and clear with bright numbers and easy to follow directions. But what I found was amazing is their customer support. I’m a left brained person who needs to know all the nuances of an item. When I had a few questions I emailed the company and within an hour or less I got an answer. Since then I “bothered “ them a few times but now I’m a pro at WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS and by the way it works without a hitch.
I totally recommend WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS

Thoroughly annoyed😡

I’d been using the free version of WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for the longest, but decided to pay for it recently since I’ve been walking more. The stopwatch still stops at the most inopportune times on my walk. This morning I walked 30 minutes only to check my time toward the end & see it had only been tracking the first 5 minutes of my walk. I am livid...that was my first time walking that route & now I have no time to compare it to😡Why am I paying if this is the same issue I had with the free version. I will NOT be renewing.

Wonderful for walkers/runners. Great app

I'm really happy. I started using as a walker;
Now I use as a runner. I get great data and WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS is very sophisticated - it keeps track of stop times which is a great feature. The only thing I wish it had was a library of walk/runs for different areas. But I've now been a happy user for nearly three years as a paying elite member and though I've tried others I'm loyal to this. Great features. Great implementation. Also great and fast customer support whenever I’ve had a question or issue.

Heart Rate Problem

I’ve used WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for several years, but I upgraded to Elite when I saw the heart rate feature within WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS , and display on my iWatch. This worked wonderfully for a week... now the heart rate isn’t captured at all. I know that the HR still works on the iWatch, but not within WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS . I’m very disappointed. I love walking, listen to music, and getting my pace updates from the Walkmeter app. I’ve tried everything to fix it. After a couple weeks I got it to work for one day. I love WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS , but I won’t keep the Elite, if the HR doesn’t work.

My main watch app

I love WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS before I got a watch. Since the watch, it has become my most cherished monitor of my life and travels. Every where I go I try to find a long walk to take with WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS following me. Afterwards I reflect on the walk with the map and can vividly recall bay to breakers in San Francisco, canal walks in London and the north of England, a beach in Dubai and so many more. The watch part help me monitor progress while the phone records the map and detail. Great fun and lovely reflections

Worked Okay

I used WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS in a corn maze (it was a large corn maze) and it worked out pretty well except it kept trying to correct the paths while we were walking. Like, it refused to accept the possibility of a curved trail, or that we walked in a large circle. Sadly, we did not get the chance to see how accurate WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS could draw out the Alice in Wonderland maze the owners of the farm made, but the satellite imaging did help get us out of the maze with the sleeping toddler, which we did appreciate. Imma keep WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS and test its accuracy another day... I wanna complete the maze... I’m seventeen, I get to be a child.

Easy to use… pretty accurate.

I’ve been using Walkmeter for years . It accurately records my walk times, my paths and my split times. It’s a little off on elevation , but I also walk under lots of shady areas if that makes a differences. I have records going back several years so I can see my progress over time. I like it and will keep using it.

Mr. Swartz

I find walkmeter to be a double edge sword. In early stages of training the systems is too difficult to understand all the option available. Then, once you get familiar you find out how useless this technology can be. In order for a runner or athlete to improve they need reliable and dependable data. Walkmeter provides neither.

Without alerting user Walkmeter just expired. So, tracking data is interrupted. This confirms the company just wants your money. Plus, no one to talk to. I’ve had Walkmeter for several years. Conclusion: not accurate, no training, sensitive and affected but power lines, etc. bottom line is: a marathon runner explained to me. A runner knows and don’t need to be told they’re doing right or wrong.

Nice App

I’ve been using WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS for a few years now. It does what I am looking for. It could use a few features I’ve seen in other apps, like the ability to share your workout via messaging. One of my favorite features is the ability to trim the distance. That is useful when you sometimes forget to push Stop until you drive back home!😳🤪 I’m looking forward to reaching my 1000 mile walking milestone next year!

Amazing App!

Wish I could give it 10 stars. With the elite upgrade you can customize WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS to do just about anything. Do yourself a favor and upgrade if you haven't done to it yet. If you are serious about losing weight or just getting in better shape, it will be the best $ you've ever spent. I've been using it for walking for several months now and can't imagine walking with out it. Get you a heart rate monitor that syncs with WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS and you are all set. WalkmeterWalkingHikingGPS is done right! Keep up the good work developers and thank you!

P.S. Because it uses the satellite gps data from your iPhone for location, your phone needs a clear view of the sky for Walkmeter to be accurate. As they recommend it works best when the phone is in an armband or a running belt vs in your pocket.

What Happened to the Map?

Just recently I found this is no longer displaying the map on Facebook shares, just a big logo with a few stats. Even on old walked where it used to show the map, now only shows the logo. What gives? I liked having the map there.

Just noticed the map still shows on the Facebook app, but not on the Facebook web site (and it did until recently).

Suddenly my Walkmeter would only record time but not distance. I noticed others had the same problem. Turned out I put the phone in my shirt pocket after starting a walk without going to the home screen. The bouncing of the phone somehow changed my Activity to 7-Minute Workout. When I set the Activity back to Walk the problem was solved. I’ve used the Walkmeter for five years and 839 walks. Good to have it back.

Nonsense! I’m sitting on a bench and Walkmeter says I’ve walked 0.24 miles. Huh?? No wonder it clocks more miles than my Apple Watch Outdoor Walking app. Ya think??

Colin Battley   2 years ago

When I used app to record my favourite walks a year ago it worked fine I use apple watch with iPhone 12 Now the gps does not communicate continuously so the map of my walk is nonsense different every time; I take it should not need cellular reception for go’s to work properly
