CheckPlease Lite - Tip Calculator Reviews

I’ve been using CheckPleaseLite for years, almost to the point where I can’t calculate tips in my head, but that’s a different story. If you don’t believe its accuracy, just enter the correct sales tax amount and look at your receipt and compare subtotal, tax and check total. Mine is always spot on. Some places will give you a suggested tip amount, which in my experience tends to be slightly higher. Splitting a check with friends is a breeze.

I have been using CheckPleaseLite since it first became available on CheckPleaseLite Store over 4+ yrs ago.

This is the ONLY tip calculator I have seen or used that factors tips based on the subtotal and NOT including tax.

I paid for ad-free many years ago because I valued CheckPleaseLite , features from the get go.

For an old app, this works quite well on iOS 15. Of all the tip calcs I've seen out there, this one is the cleanest one I've come across, and best of all, no ads. Not bad an app that hasn't been updated in roughly six years.

Has all the features. Select percentage. Set number to split. Round / Down. Include tax or not. Show detail. No ads!

I have no idea what happened to Checkplease Lite. The calculations used to be accurate. Now, three different totals show up on the screen. Even CheckPleaseLite example in CheckPleaseLite Store shows this. I have deleted CheckPleaseLite .

There are so many tip calculators for the iPhone, but I was unimpressed with most of them. Most have an interface that is a bit too complex - after all, all one is doing is calculating 15 or 20 % and occasionally dividing between a few people. This is not hard math - so to take the trouble to take out your iPhone, unlock it, launch an app, and then enter the data is not clearly an advantage unless it is quick. So the key is having a very quick way to enter the data and getting results without multiple screens and pop-up dials, calculators, etc.. With this quick and simple interface, it may actually be worth using.

ONE SMALL FIX NEEDED - Either a button to clear whole amt at once and/or have reset after closing to take new number without needing to delete first.

What a joke!! Developer rush to have ads clutter screen for revenue has rendered CheckPleaseLite useless. The main calculator window has a permanent ad over it, making this ap a beautiful BOAT ANCHOR!! I have removed this piece of junk from my phone.

It used to be ok but now it constantly crashes. The design is also not really good. We need something more modern and reliable. But the idea is nice.

This Tip Calculator is the best thing since the sliced bread.

This is the worst app. It lacks imagination, and just flat out doesn't work. The developer is MIA and seems dishonest when (and if) he does respond.

Stay far, far away.

Latest update ruined CheckPleaseLite , the UI is horrible and the old UI is the reason I used CheckPleaseLite . :-(

Too bad and a real shame that the dev actually "broke what was fixed" the opposite of what they should have done.

Unfortunately, I'm now deleting CheckPleaseLite after years of loyal use.

I have to admit, I was onboard with this tip calculator since day 1. Loyal, loved, and enjoyed the application as it went through it's evolution. Slowly but surely, ads started popping up with this tip calculator and although it was tolerable, it did get the job done. Correctly!

Unfortunately, I feel this developer was very sneaky in the way he made this application free from the start, then all the sudden created it a lite version with the option to purchase the "non-lite" version with no ads.

I'm sorry, but honestly, nothing in life is free but one thing I have respected about this tip calculator was the simple fact that it did the job better than other tip calculators out there and considering that it was free, it made them more respectable. It showed that they can develop apps that were better than the rest and yet gave it away for free.

Now, this tip calculator is on the band wagon and duped all long time supporters to having to pay for CheckPleaseLite if they want no nagging on their screen.

To say that this application takes its inspiration from Carlos Perez's "Tip" application, would be putting things quite euphemistically. I'm not usually a person that gets into the fray of one applications design over another, but in this case, it is quite galling to think that a developer would redesign his application to look (and to attempt to function) just like another developer's app.

I'm pretty sure that most folks won't care or will not know what has happened here, so I will say this: Before buying "Tip" I tried out "CheckPlease" first, and found countless mathematical errors in it. At first I thought it was just me, so did the computations (simple stuff) over and over again, but each time I would find that "CheckPlease" would get the math (this is especially true when "Rounding") wrong. While it's a bit disconcerting, I suppose one shouldn't expect anything else from CheckPlease.

Update: I just checked again, and the calculation (and Rounding) errors are still there. They aren't difficult to find if you take the time to look.

I've always understood that when calculating a tip, the tip amount should be based on the the subtotal (the amount after removing tax). Of the iPhone tip apps that I've examined, this is the only own that does this.

I'd like to see some improvements, but overall I like CheckPleaseLite, and it's free. I'd like to see improved sensitivity of the sliders and I think that the sales tax amount should be displayed with two decimal places instead of one. Where I live, the sales tax amount is 7.45%, but it is displayed as 7.5% (although the correct tax amount is actually calculated). The slider buttons could be larger, too, to make it easier to move them.

In closing, I like CheckPleaseLite a lot, and I think we'll probably see improvements in the weeks and months ahead.

thinking! I have never had one problem with it. In fact it is better than any of the other tip calc out there in my humble opinion. I haven't seen very many that figure the tip correctly. That is, it should figure it before applying tax. This one does! Also, it is quick and easy to use when you are hurriedly trying to get a number so you can get that vinyl check holder to the wait person before they disappear for five minutes.

Addendum: The 3.1 version is not ad supported while the 3.3 version is. It places an ad at the top. While I understand that the maker is now wanting to make money, the ads are distracting and obtuse.

If you have the 3.1 version. Don't upgrade.

The main thing I want to know quickly with a group of diners who are splitting the tab is this: what is the split amount BEFORE the tip is added. Thus, and ideal tip app would tell me what we each owe prior to tipping, and then how much each should add for the tip when our credit cards come back. In other words, I'd like CheckPleaseLite to show me the pre-tip splits, the tip amount, and the post-tip split. I will pay good money for someone who comes up with this. Icing on the cake would be if CheckPleaseLite could do complex splits, for example, if there are 6 diners comprised of 2 couples and 2 singles, CheckPleaseLite would calculate 2/6 for two of the splits and 1/6 on the other two for the singles. It's complicated, I know, but this is how people dine.

With the dozens of tip calculators out there that were all missing pieces, you finally put it all together. Well done. BUT, what I'd like to see is when the tip is changed from exact to something else, that the recalculated tip percentage is displayed, e.g. I may want to round up the tip but I won't if it means the tip percentage goes to 30%. So, when any changes are made from exact calculations, spin the tip percentage wheel to the new tip percentage (and rounded whole numbers are good enough). I would like to see the fraud protection feature too but I can live without that.
