BugID doesn’t work at all. I tried identifying multiple different insects and it couldn’t even give me a guess on any of them. I’m better off identifying insects from my own knowledge than with BugID. Or typing a description into google and scrolling through photos until I see a matching one. And yes, all the photos were clear, with good lighting, in focus on the insect, only one specimen in the photo, etc.

why present BugID as free but when download it you have to pay to use it? i guess what im trying to say is, what happened to if you have to pay money for an app you pay for it when you download it and you see how much it is right there to USE BugID instead of having the let down and time wasted to download it and then it slaps you with a payment “suggestion” before you can use BugID . if BugID is not free upon download. PUT THE PRICE DOWN ON BugID . instead of hiding the fact you have to pay for something you thought was free to use.

There is a one week free trial, which I attempted to sign up, but I changed from annual to monthly and purchased a monthly subscription at the last moment, not realizing the free trial disappeared.
I requested a refund and it was denied, and then I appealed and it was denied.
I feel like this was a trick payment because the free trial literally disappeared as I was clicking to authorize payment. Btw BugID didn’t even work for me, unable to identify a beetle easily identified by a different app.
If they are not going to support a refund on an accidental purchase, there are better apps you can go to.

As soon as you koen BugID and it asks the usual permissions to track and such, it immediately asks you to rate BugID before you have even used it. Which makes me suspicious of any of its ratings.
Then before you get any info at all it asks you to pay for premium, I didnt see any free option other than a 3day trial.
After all that it gave the exact same one sentence response that another app gave and that app was completely free without any of this nonsense.
On top of all that it did NOT not have any additional information on the type of insect and only led to a list any similar insects basically no information despite the apps description of have complete information.
You would have better results googling the bug yourself.
(the other app that was free and didnt give me this nonsense is called “Seek” I think, and I am not affiliated with them in any way, just annoyed that BugID gave the same word for word response as a less scamy app)

Total crap. Can’t identify unless you subscribe. Sure you can eventually get it to give you a free trial but it’s just a scam to get you to forget u subscribed after looking up one bug and end up paying. Dont waste your time. Spend couple extra minutes searching online just using a description of bug and searching through online pictures. Then get your results for free. I get purpose of apps is to make money. But make it with ads for those who don’t want anything but just to know what they have found. Charge money to those who want to get the premium stuff that really isn’t worth it. It shouldn’t cost a single cent for simply identifying a bug. If you want money for that, then make people watch a really short ad and let the ones who don’t care about money sign up for premium option to get it ad free. That’s my suggestion. I won’t ever sign up for subscription just so you hope I forget about it and you take my money.

Must be friends writing reviews because this does not work. I tired about 10 pictures of what I know wasn’t a moth and that’s what is kept classifying it as. So I went a found a clear great picture from Google of a German roach which is one of the earliest bugs to recognize and it misidentified it also tried again with another great Google pic of something else and again it was wrong. Absolutely do not depend on BugID.
by 321downtime
I couldn’t take a “clear enough “ picture of a bug no matter how many times I tried, it wouldn’t identify a bug. I took about a dozen pictures of a bug that appeared perfectly clear to me, but BugID not only didn’t identify the insect, but it also didn’t store the photos.
I’m deleting BugID and installing “Picture insect” in its place.
That series of apps “Picture…” works great. I use them for plants, mushrooms, and birds. Now insects.

Signed up for the Free 3 day trial membership and my credit card was billed at exactly the 48 hour point. I wasn’t given the opportunity to cancel if I had decided to do so. This is trickery, be aware. I’ve never run into this problem with any other trial membership before, this speaks volumes about their tactics. Unfortunately, there was no way to cancel once they charged my credit card.
Beware, this probably isn’t the first time this has happened to trial users.
by Schweyer88
I’ve taken 3 pictures of the same bug and completely random bugs all different colors and shapes were suggested. I then took a picture of a caterpillar just to test it on something basic and it said it was a butterfly and didn’t even have a picture of caterpillars unless you scroll down to the bottom and it even had a picture of one’s mouth making it look grotesque like it’s some kind of threat. Idk I’d keep looking…

0 review 😡 even identified a spider twice as a dog tick . One the very first picture . I am so upset . I got scammed . I canceled subscription within a few hours and I’m forced to pay and keep the active the subscription. Why would I want BugID when it can’t identify correctly. Took 5 pictures 5 times of same spider and never got the same answer . I want my money back !!!!
by Justme_167
I used BugID one time in the trial period but it automatically signs you up for a subscription at $8 per week automatically renewing. Fortunately I didn’t have a credit card linked to my Apple ID so Apple reached out via email after the first charge by BugID failed. This isn’t even a realistic price for the service regardless of the deceptive tactics to get you subscribed. Which just proves it’s intentional to get as much money out of you before you realize what has happened

Wouldn’t let me identify the giant cockroach men who keep smashing through my windows and stealing my beloved organs! They might not actually be cockroaches because bullets work on them. But these things? No way. Bullets just fly off their carapaces and make them angry! Weirdly enough, they seem concerned for my health, saying stuff like “take your meds!” Or “You need to calm down!”
Anyway, I wish I could rate this 0 stars because I’m not dropping 40 bones—they’re stealing those too—on BugID just to find out the spider in the corner is named Cletus Dillburger—I already know she’s poisonous and bites dudes heads off.
by Lindseyk98
I started the free trial , immediately canceled when I needed to identify a single bug & now it is continually charging me $30 every few weeks saying my account is active until 2024. There’s no way to stop it , I can’t even use my iPhone account any more because y’all won’t stop trying to charge me for your stupid scam !

I tried multiple times and the “scan process” would stop at 98% and I did not have the prince to wait longer than 3min for a result.
Honestly, goggle reverse photo search was the best! Use the Google app and take a picture of the insect and it will even take you to articles and threads.
Deleted app within an hour of downloading.
by JEB2299
Please do not download this trash app.
The first thing they have you do when you install BugID is take a survey, then they access your photos, let you scan a bug, pretend to have a result, but refuse to show you it unless you subscribe. It’s a scam. Who would ever pay a monthly fee to scan bugs. It’s bizarre.
by Kay.cookie
BugID appears to be free until JUST before you get to the point that it’ll tell you what the bug is. After you’ve uploaded the photo, it’s like “we know what bug this is! But to see it, you need to pay for a subscription.” Wish I’d known that before wasting my time downloading BugID !
by Stevie1355
I submitted some photos to identify. They were up close, pretty good photos..it took about a minute to go from 1% to 98%…..then continued loading at 98% for 20 minutes before my phone would lock its screen and once I unlock, it clears my photo…definitely deleted and won’t reinstall.

Tried 5 times!! It identified an ant as a bunch of random bugs!!! 😡

Would be great if you could use without paying money!

I have been trying to request my money back for a week - since I paid the subscription I have been able to open BugID twice and now it just crashes. Absolute garbage and a scam. Cannot get in contact with developers
by Zeewo
I showed a picture of a worm, looking to identify the type, and they said it was a “red ant”. There is a feature in BugID that says you can submit to their “experts” if they misdiagnose something. I did that two weeks ago and I’ve heard nothing back.
by Poopsticks666
BugID appears to be free until JUST before you get to the point that it’ll tell you what the bug is. After you’ve uploaded the photo, it’s like “we know what bug this is! But to see it, you need to pay for a subscription.” Wish I’d known that before wasting my time downloading BugID !
by PollyTreasures
I deleted BugID a few minutes after downloading. I attempted to identify a spider first and then a termite. With the spider, BugID gave me several possibilities that were obviously wrong. However, with the termite BugID gave me several species of wasps and bees and nothing even close to an ant or termite. Sorry, not worth the space it consumed on my phone.
by Ejecwy
I get it you need to make money for your efforts but difficult to work through the screens to pay for subscription. Also I am going to identify one or two bugs a year. Is there a skimmed down version for people trying to identify an invasive insect.
by #lovethisgame🤪😛😆
I got BugID because where I live there are lots of bugs that I am not sure of what they are. I scanned a bug and was waiting for the results when it asked me to pay $30 yearly for it. I was barely ever going to use BugID . I would only use it on bugs that look dangerous. It wouldn’t let me see what the ONE bug I scanned was. I would think that the results are correct and it informs you about the insects you scan, but I am not paying $30 dollars for a thing I will use once every other month. Would be great app if you could still get results without paying an absurd amount of money. Maybe make someone pay to be informed about the bug, but just to have the name of it should be free.
by NoobianPrincess
Challenging to cancel due to user interface. Won’t let you not input text, hard to make the keyboard minimize once you’ve put in text, but can’t click to move on to the next screen without the keyboard minimizing. Then it froze at the end and wouldn’t let me click anything as I was trying select unsubscribe in the end. I got the sense that this cumbersome UI for the cancellation process was purposeful to make you give up and continue to pay for their product. App isn’t actually free, as it’s only free for a short period of time unless you cancel, and cancelling was a challenge as noted above. App itself serves its purpose, but it’s expensive for what it is and how often I personally would use it.

BugID quickly identifies insects but the photos I take, which are used to ID the bugs, don’t seem to beforwardable by email or message. What gets sent appears to be an invitation to download BugID , when all I wanted to do was send the photo to my pest control guy. If that were not the case it would be a 5-star review. Without it it’s just a 3.
by Kick Six
BugID was wrong on two verified identifications that I did on my own. Also, there isn’t any additional info to learn about each insect. So basically, you’re
paying 30 bucks a year for getting a general place to start your identification but you can’t trust the result completely. NOT WORTH THE MONEY YET.
MAKE IT BETTER!!!
by DustPuppy_Lethal
There's a long way for BugID to go to be a full "gotta have" app.
There should be a way for them to leverage better images out of Apple devices via the API.
I don't know how robust the back-end database is or if it's connected to an industry recognized source but that would help our immensely as well.
A forwarded shot to their support returned a fairly quick response with the correct identification. If they do nothing more than semi-real-time responses, that still puts BugID cleanly in the "worth a try" category.

I found a weird little bug in my bed and thought it was a bes bug and started freaking out. The expert was very kind and took only a couple of days to notify me and let me know it was not.

Cody got right back to me the next day with the type of spiders I was dealing with. It was good to know that it was not a brown recluse or close relative thereof! Great job and many thanks.

I would like to have an area where I can take notes on the insects I find when I am collecting my insects, then I let them go
by Nerfball5
I have never had an interest for bugs. Every time I saw one I wanted to kill them onsite. A friend encouraged me to start releasing them into the wild instead. So now instead of killing them onsite, I’m learning about the bugs I encounter.
by Best19876544
This was a great resource in particular the ask an expert feature. We were worried we had found a brown recluse spider in our home and got multiple conflicting identifications through Nextdoor and the iPhone bug identifier. The identification narrowed it down for us and then we were able to get final confirmation through the ask and expert feature.

I woke up at 3 am to find THIS HUGE bug flying around in my house, I need screens put in but my 2 cats love the fresh air, so it must have gotten in through the tiny opening. My cats were playing with it eeeekkkkk.. woke me up and I just had to find out what type of insect this was, so I downloaded BugID.. come to find out .. it was a “blinded sphinx moth” BugID was so easy to use, very knowledgeable and helpful. 10 out of 10. I let the little guy outside and am now going back to sleep, Goodnight!

Within the past few years there has been an increase of spiders and other insects that are not native to Illinois. I have found BugID to be helpful identifying the species that have been found living locally that I am unable to identify.
by Rjames32
I requested identification for a tiny bug found in my bedroom. Mostly concerned whether it would be harmful. I’dnever seen anything quite like it, and it was tiny. They went the extra mile to identify a difficult species based on my photo. I so appreciate the time and effort!
by Really_miffed
I just moved into a new place and found a couple of suspicious bugs in the kitchen that I used BugID to identify. It came back they they were COCKROACHES and I even emailed the support email hoping they would tell me BugID was wrong, but they did not :( 5 stars for BugID , 0 stars for my new apartment 😭
Also I noticed reviews about the free trial being a scam or not being able to identify without paying and I truly believe this is due to user error. Anytime I sign up for an app’s free trial I immediately go into my Apple ID to cancel it, which still allows me access through the end of the free trial date, and never have any issues with being charged. If you don’t cancel it then you will of course be charged..? And I was able to use the identifier using the free trial which did not require payment, but I only needed it once so I can’t speak to long term use for free.

Amazing ! Thank you. I finally have a place to go to learn about the Nature All Round Us/Me.

Originally found app didn’t work in 12.4. Developer immediately fixed the issue. Remarkable. Oh. BugID works very well. Only one issue...would like to see BugID provide a link to more information about each find including common names. Look at PlantÑet app for example. Nice job you guys!

BugID is amazing! I’ve been able to identify every insect I’ve photographed. It’s helped me start getting over my phobia of insects.
by Robberfly451
The application and assistance from ID experts has been extraordinarily helpful in both my professional career in pest management and my hobby of collecting and identifying local species for my personal collection. Highly recommended.
by Denise547
Tried 3 other apps without good results. None of their results looked like my picture. BugID nailed this insect I’d never seen before. I’m not a insect fan, but I breathed easier knowing the details.
by Dennisha Secreteb
It helps if you zoom in on the insect you are trying to identify. Doesn’t Always get it right but it’s very good. Recommended!
by Andricka Yardleyqb
It quickly identified a weird-looking insect I found at home. Even though the photo I took didn’t have good quality. Great!
by Robema05
I used the Expert Recognition feature and received a prompt reply on what bug was in my apartment - thank you!
by Tonyjoepet
The that sets BugID apart is that there are experts waiting if you can’t get an ID or don’t agree with BugID ’s results. Amazing resource with fast responses! Love BugID!

So far BugID has been very accurate and has identified lots of insects for me. Found my first tick. Ugh. BugID is wonderful.

Found a bug near my front door, my husband told me it was a tick! BugID helped me identify it correctly and put my fears to rest😃

BugID has really helped me determine which pests are friends in which are foes in my organic garden. Absolutely love it, use it every day!

I’m using BugID to do my bug collection and it’s working perfectly! It’s giving awesome info the only botherment there is camera focus but that’s not the apps problem but this will help so many bug watchers find out what there watching thanks for making this... I’m telling if u use this it’s AWESOME for what u need

This is an awesome app! I’ve had Insect I.D. for a few years and BugID is more accurate and I like how information on the insect is automatically given. I am currently using the free version, but will probably upgrade to the paid one

Love the graphics I am really interested in bugs and I have seen lots
by Relonda Peagrimko
I love BugID and use it all the time. Though its called picture ‘insect’ you can still look up spiders and other bugs. Though im giving 5 stars it doesn’t always give you the right options for the bug you’re looking for but that’s probably due to the fact that there are so many insects out there.
by Manhattan Surcombeqivtj
My daughter found a caterpillar in our yard that I couldn’t find out what kind it was. I searched with proper terms on google an zero luck! I decided to look in the AppStore for an app that could help and found this. Once I took a full body picture of the caterpillar it was able to identify it properly straight away! The caterpillar turned out to be a Pink Striped Oakworm Moth.
Don’t hesitate, get BugID- 5 stars!!!
