This game is essentially just a more in-depth version of Risk. I liked it overall, but there’s quite a few problems with the game itself. For one, the tutorial is separated into many parts based on what it’s teaching you, but the content in each segment overlaps. I went through the whole tutorial and felt like it would’ve been less confusing and time-consuming to figure the gameplay out on my own. Second, the graphics of the troop movements glitch from time to time. Either your armies become temporarily invisible, or your ships move through land terrain for no reason. Third, the in-game messages when you complete an objective (like defeating a nation or fulfilling a win condition) take up most of the screen and cover each other if there are multiple at the same time. This makes it very hard to determine if the game has ended or what your next objectives are. Also, the game has a tab on the title screen labeled “Buy” which informs you that purchasing the game will remove ads. I’ve played the game for a couple hours in total and have yet to see a single ad. Maybe that’s more of a good thing, but it also seems like it could be a way to get peoples money without changing the game in any way.
I have played a couple of games of the whole world map and I’ve notice that your allies aren’t really allies they leave you instantly it feels and you can be as best of friends with a nation and they turn on you in one turn. I was playing a game as Prussia and I was doing well I was best friends with Russia next thing I know they turn on me and invade me. Then other countries would declare war on me. So I had a total of 6 countries declare war on me out of the blue and I couldn’t do anything and they were all superpowers as well. The whole corruption aspect in the game is dumb and becomes ridiculous late game when over half of your income is just gone. I feel as if you should make it so we don’t have to play with corruption because I stood no chance with the little income I was getting because of the corruption. The AI is just ridiculous how it goes from one extreme to the next… I made peace with many nations and they would just declare war on me the next turn so what is even the point of paying a country for peace. All in all there is a lot of mechanics I feel in the game that just ruin it because of how ridiculous they are.
The game is great until you play against more than one other nation. I can’t solve the problem in which they all want to attack me. I am not expanding, I’m already getting attacked by another nation so I am just defending, and I gave the other nations gifts. However, that doesn’t stop the other nations from declaring war while I’m already getting attacked by someone else (that I didn’t declare with). I’m literally handing out gifts at the start of the game, and the nations start attacking me 5 turns later. As soon as the other nations expand and border my country, they declare war. Apparently they won’t stand by while I become so powerful, yet they are the ones expanding!!!!
“It may get difficult later in the game.”
I get that it should get more difficult. My complaint is that it doesn’t make sense. AI will just randomly go to war with you for any reason. It’s a luck of the drawl. They find every reason to start attacking you rather than each other. They focus the player regardless of what they do. If I wanted to play the roll of a dice game domination game, I would play risk. The developer will even tell you not to worry about building alliances. Puts options in the game that even they know makes no sense because it’s random.
This game is amazing! It is like Risk but, a lot more in depth and much more interesting. I do have a few humble suggestions that might improve the gameplay. Having unique troop types to each civilization. Such as war elephants to Asian countries, Gatling guns to the Americans (1882 technology) or maybe being able to purchase mercenary armies from different regions. Also an option to view a breakdown list by land, armies and navies. When you play the large world maps, it’s rather a task to keep track of where everything is, a simple breakdown saying X number of troops in Ohio or Moscow is a lvl III would just help organize the warfare and growth. And lastly maybe a few more options with diplomacy. Like Annex land, bride enemy armies, marry into an alliance. But with all that I just said, this is an outstanding game, and way better than anything I could of ever come up with! I love strategy games and I know I’ll be playing this game for a long long time. I love the different scenarios, setting your own challenge level, the history behind the game, the game is just an amazing way to kick back, relax and figure out tactics, politics and financial issues!
I definitely enjoy this game as it takes plenty hours out of my day… everyday. However, some aspects of the game do not make sense to me. I still have yet to grasp the fort > cannon > man power ratios. I have lost so many battles that I for no reason can understand why i did. I feel like 9 times out of 10 your personal forts never hold up, but everyone else’s does. Moreover, some countries come out of the early rounds with 7-10k troops in multiple colonies when the player only has 2-3k in each. I understand having to earn the end, but sometimes you just get set up for failure because of the AI. Making alliances is extremely difficult as well. Like someone else stated, countries will attack you after making an alliance just the round before, and it ends up just being a great waste of money. Is there a tips and tricks website to better understand this stuff? Otherwise, great game on the devs part.
Then, it’d probably be something like this. Unlike that game, you can’t simply roll the dice until the enemy stacks are ground down here. You’re limited to 1 attack per stack. The units are well thought out, with an edge given to the defender.
This is all fine, but what isn’t fine are the all-powerful forts. Their construction is limited only by a faction’s cash. They’re tolerable on the bigger maps, but for the smaller ones it can quickly devolve into a WWI stalemate. (Chinese Warlords map is a perfect example of this.) I think they should require multiple turns to be constructed. After all, it took time to build impressive defenses in reality.
I still recommend you try it. Ads between turns get annoying, but the Dev’s gotta make a profit somehow. There’s no pay to play trash here, he delivered a good game worth your time and purchase. It makes me feel like dusting off RISK, to see if any of these mechanics translate well.
This is a wonderful game. I really enjoyed it I beat every single level. Now that I have I figured I would try out this developers other games and while they are good I feel like World at War is too complicated this game CAW is simpler but still hard in a sense. I wish your other games were like this or at least add on some more levels too it. Granted there are still some things to improve with this one. Like I feel like you should have more interaction with the enemy’s. Or they would all at least have their own unique personality to them that makes each level more difficult and unique. That’s my 2 cents. Besides that this is a great game you should definitely make more like it. Or improve this game.
REVIEW IS FOR RETURNING PLAYERS OF SERIES, IF NEW JUST PLAY AND ENJOY
While I love this series of games (if it’s technically a series), I think this one is a very mixed entry. There’s a lot of good and bad, so I’ll go over it individually.
Good changes from French and Indian war:
-More scenarios
-Entire world for the map
-Technological generations showing the progress of history
-Combat seems more consistent as to what army will win which engagement
-Terrain matters more in baffles
Unnecessary/bad changes
-Simplified combat, you can no longer fire on an enemy to weaken them. Now you must just clash it out by throwing what you have at them.
-Other nations really want to go to war with you, even if they’re in no position to do so and you haven’t provoked them. I get nations need to expand, but it feels like the AI are determined to go to war with you no matter what you do (unless you make an alliance). This could be an issue in previous games too but it’s still upsetting it’s yet to be fixed.
It’s still a very good game, and an entertaining addition to the best series of games for mobiles, but I do wish they didn’t do away with the previous combat. It really hurts the game, and feels like an unnecessary change. If the devs read this, I really hope the next game has a skirmish mechanic. Maybe even do a medieval game where only armies with ranged could do a skirmish attack, while melee armies can only full rush.
I am a huge fan of this developer. Once again this game is so much fun to play. The campaigns are fun and challenging and the whole world map is a great addition. I love this style of gameplay and they have done a great job building this game.
Only thing I would like to see is a map like the whole world ones but with a higher income/power goal so the game lasts longer as some games can be short. Another idea would be to make the AI focus on other AIs when they are close to winning as it’s annoying when you are trying to stop a large power a few % away from winning and then be attacked by another AI from a different direction. These are small things and the overall game is great!
Hi I haven’t bought anything but I would like to inform you that when trying to purchase something it is mixed up, let me show you. When I click on 2,500 credits, it shows up as the 8,000 credits for 4.99 and so on for everything else. This is a great game and I’m not expecting much considering it’s made from small developers. I like where this game is going because even on easy it’s hard considering is more skilled then luck. Even is you got a lot of land you have to manage your troops, defense, waters and while attacking and conquering. Great game just a quick tip. This is on iOS
I typically don’t review games, but I have to say I love this game. Prussia is probably my favorite country to play as. There’s a difficulty there having Britain, and Russia by you & you never know what France or Austria is going to do. I think the hardest part is trying to gain ground at a rate that gets you ahead of the Ming dynasty. As Prussia I typically do the best I can to keep Russia away from me, and go after the Ottoman Empire. Usually end up having to fight Russia, but by the time that happens it’s a march to take on the Ming Dynasty. All in all it’s a really fun game. Sometimes all it takes is one bad attack, and the whole things falls like a house of cards, but that’s life. Great game man!
I love this game! I’ve always loved strategy games like this, and this one allows me to pick it up and play for a short while or invest myself for hours in gameplay. It’s shockingly good quality for an indie game (there are some bugs of course but they aren’t game breaking) and I’m proud to say I have completed every single level on hard mode. One thing I’d like to change, I like the aspect of French and Indian War where you can manage your lands and control what you do with them (homestead, settlement, fishing, etc.) and I’d like to see that implemented here too. Keep up the great work, now I’m going to move on to French and Indian War now :).
First off, let me say that having a strategy game on an iPhone is good enough, but it being true to risk or hearts of iron is even better. Secondly, there aren’t any ads, at least not that I have seen yet, and I quite enjoy that. This game takes a few hours of each of my days, because I always have my phone on me, and this game is readily available when I’m bored at work or after work when I get home (and lose track of time and end up staying up till after 7am playing it, whoops lol). My only major concern, and it doesn’t even warrant losing a star, is the corruption aspect. It’s not the developers fault, I just can’t figure out how to make it go down.
TLDR; Great app, fun game, if you take over the world expect >50% corruption within your troops.
I have played this game a lot even after winning matches I will still conquer the entire maps. I just finished taking over the world as Australia on the hardest difficulty I can say it’s very fun a lot of thinking and strategy. It’s a simple but complex systems I also like your other games you have made. In all honesty the only thing I can ask for is local multiplayer. Cause out of all of the war games I enjoy this the most and have quite a few friends that like playing it too it would be awesome to play with them. Thanks for making the time to read and better the game I know reviews are only opinions but y’all take them seriously I know me and countless others can agree. Have a good day!
Colonies at war is a very well made game. It requires true strategy, and an understanding of mechanics to be successful. People often complain that it’s unrealistic however 40k armies can cause clutter so perhaps making four 10k armies and attacking a target would be more effective. If you manage army and naval size and resources you can easily outmaneuver the AI on easy and medium and with a well thought out strategy win hard difficulty. There are ads but I believe that it is a reasonable amount and a fair trade between a free game and in return adds to give the dev a steady flow of income. Overall I’d recommend this game to those who want a true strategy experience and really enjoyed playing through it and hope the other games are just as good
French and Indian war was much better than this game. This game looked and felt rushed and truly did not live up to my expectations given the other awesome games made by this developer. Animations were clunky, AI was not interesting, the maps however numerous were very basic and Alabama even appeared twice in the United States.
That being said, the developer of this game works on these projects by himself. For a one man development team he puts out amazing work. He is also very responsive to reviews and concerns about his game. Hopefully in the future he will make a more strategic game like FIW but for now and being a one man development team, he’s put out a good product and responded to my review, thus the increased 5 star rating. Good work John, keep it up.
I really like this game and I have a lot of fun playing it, i think you do a very solid job when balancing troops and I honestly can’t come up with many suggestions when it comes to changing this game, and I love that you add new scenarios every now and then. I honestly mainly just wanted to suggest the idea of maybe making a napoleonic wars game or maybe scenario idk but yeah I feel like that could be cool to like do scenarios with the different coalitions ,the invasion of russia, invading egypt, etc. or maybe even a roman one, idk i just feel tgat you guys did very well in this one concept wise and that you could aplly it to so many different points of history by just making some changes to troops skins, and adding some of that cool historical stuff you guys do.
This is a great game i love everything about this game and hope you never stop updating it. It would be really cool to see a sandbox mode where you could choose your starting cash and troops and make your own scenario. Also i saw Netherlands in the tutorial but the country isn’t in the game at all. Anyways great game and i think it’d be cool to be able to see who your at war with like if you hit “parley” on someone else. Which is a bug i found out which i like but how it works if one of the bots moves troops on your land and you click on their army and hit parley it shows your status and who your at war with and you can trade and call war on your self which i’m pretty sure doesn’t work. Anyways thank you for reading this, i love this game as I said please never stop updating it.
I’ve been playing this game for over 3 months now and I really do love it, and there a lot of room to make this game better such as introducing new units for specific countries and so on, now this isn’t to give new idea but to fix some bugs, first bug is north vs south medium difficulty (don’t know if that matter) if you play confederacy and builds ships at the capital they won’t actually build but you will lose money this happens a lot in different maps for different country’s mainly ships haven’t had an unit problems, another thing is the ads, I know the developers are a small team working hard but to many ads after every turn Or every other, I fine with ads, bought the paid version but if possible can you reduce them?
Thanks for your hard work dev team and keep it up, this is by far my favorite app.
Hi John! I love your game and appreciate that you respond to all reviews and are only a one man team. I have no issues with the game like others, but I do have some small suggestions. In your responses to reviews I keep seeing you say that countries will have a set of ideologies that will make countries like or dislike each other. I think that this is a cool feature, but there is no way to see which countries are set to like or dislike each other. This would be a good and not too complicated feature to add. More nations to play as, specifically harder-to-play tribal nations, would be really cool. Once again, love your game.
