OK Content, Bad Customer Service

UPDATE: the developers of Lingopie reached out, apologized, and issued a refund. I don’t think customers should have to write a bad review to get a dignified response, but I did want to provide an update and give them credit for ultimately resolving things fairly.

The shows they offer in German are fine but not particularly entertaining - the kind of off-brand stuff you would have rented at the library as a kid, or watched in German class in high school. Worth a 3- or 3.5-star rating. However, the customer service was 1-star. I cancelled after my first month but noticed two months later that they kept charging me. When I inquired, they said there appeared to another account under my name with a typo in my email address. Probably some kind of error on my end, I’ll take full ownership for that. But, given that it was clearly a mistake and the fact that I hadn’t used the service since cancelling, I would expect some kind of offer to refund all or a portion of the accidental charges. I asked kindly for that and was offered nothing. The customer service rep instead referred me to their T’s & C’s and claimed there was no way around it. Long story short: OK product, less than OK customer service from a company that clearly care more about holding onto $24 than they do about making a good impression on their customers.

Outstanding! Phenomenal! Ausgezeichnet!

I am literally speechless. I mean Lingopie is one-of-a-kind! You get the subtitles, AND you can press on the words you don’t know, AND they get automatically added to a list to review later? I mean Lingopie is so versatile it is insane! Then it lets you review new vocabulary by playing the part of the video/movie where you added it so you can see it in context? Yes! I mean, insanely brilliant!!! It loops parts you want to hear over and over again. When logged in to website, you can see the lines of dialog just passed and the lines coming next. Brilliant! You can pause, switch languages, on and on and on and on! I am love with this app! Exactly what I was looking for to learn not just one language but more! So easy! Insane! Did I just die and go to foreign language heaven?? Now you gotta do JAPANESE, please! this app, I love you!

Some translations incorrect or don’t make sense

I do love Lingopie and think it’s worth the money, overall. The best features are being able to click the captions and automatically add flash cards. Also, you can advance or go back using the captions, so that makes following along really easy.

My only complaint is that some of the translations are wrong and seem to be produced by machine translation. One example-literal/word-for-word, doesn’t make sense at all. So, I’ll know it’s a set expression, I just can’t remember quite what it means. Another example- the word isn’t translated at all and just rendered as a transliteration. Machine translators do this when the word is colloquial and not commonly known. If they fixed that I’d give it five stars for sure, everything else is perfect.

That being said. The captions are still way better than what you find on other apps, and I do think it’s worth the price.

Unprofessional Customer Service

Great concept to learn new language. I was trying Lingopie out, as with all other apps there is a trial period after which you have the flexibility to cancel the subscription from your device. Lingo Pie strategically have put their subscription on the website, so you cannot maintain from your iOS settings or from Lingopie . I was scratching my head to figure out where and how I would cancel my subscription while the time ran out and I was charged some $13. I was eventually able to figure out and cancel the subscription from their website. One of the founder reached out offering an alternative price/subscription to renew and instead I explained my situation and requested a refund, after which I never heard back. Granted, it was me who technically surpassed the free trial period by a day, but with request and explanation it should be clear why that happened. I will not recommend Lingopie to anyone.

Great Concept…

The shows are good…

I love how you can save words from so many programs … (Me encanta cómo puedes guardar palabras de tantos programas ...)

With all that being said, only reason I’m giving this
app 4 stars (cuatros estrellas) is because I can remove the little icons from the screen when I’m
watching a video on this app mobile app, but I can’t remove the little icons when watching a show on the website… I get distracted when watching a program with the little icons on PC…

Ya, know being African-American (Africano-Americano) I was intimidated trying to learn
Spanish, specifically the Northern American
Mexican dialect…

Then, it hit me, Mexican isn’t a race it’s a Nationality, anyone can learn it’s dialect… 👌🏽

Keep learning people(Sigue aprendiendo gente)

Exactly what I hoped it would be

I’ve tried learning languages partly by watching tv shows in the language for years, but it’s always been a hassle to find the right kind of show and keep track of the words I don’t know. Lingopie makes all that easy: you can browse through shows, choose exactly the kind of subtitling you want, adjust the playback speed, get definitions of almost all the words by tapping the subtitles, and it keeps track of the words you don’t know, so you can write them down later or practice them in Lingopie .

It’s not an all-in-one language learning app, but what it does, it does really well.

Needs work

When using Lingopie for iPhone the greatest feature of Lingopie does not work. That is the script dreaming below the video does not show on Lingopie , that only works if you open the webpage on your phone. Another issue is that you cannot stream the shows from your phone to your television and nor can you stream theShows from your computer to your television, either. This means that in order to use the best functionality of this app it must be used on your laptop or PC. I still gave it three stars because I think that this is an amazing platform for language learning. My only other complaint is that for the German language there really aren’t that many shows available.

A Step in the Right Direction

Immersion learning has always been strange to me as its touted by people who swear it as a singular resource. All you need to do is spend three years watching TV in [language] and you’ll get it eventually!

While I never doubted that watching TV in your target language has it’s benefits, I’d say the struggle really lies in finding content that meets the following criteria:

1) at your comprehension level
2) is something that interests you
3) there is a good amount of content

I have found it very difficult to find engaging ways to implement TV within my own learning journey which has set me back some as far as listening comprehension goes. Upon finding this app, I can say that I have found plenty of things that meet the above criteria.

Within one week and only about 2 hours of TV, I have already added about 300 words into my flashcard reviews. Not only am I gaining a simple flashcard, but used in an authentic way you won’t find in many other locations.

Potential to be great…

Has a lot of technical glitches. Still overall it is worthwhile and I enjoy it despite technical issues. Sometimes the Spanish CC translation won’t show right away when it is clicked. I lost my flash card library completely once but customer service restored it promptly so that was nice. But at times I click on a show and it loads a different one but after a few retries it all works out but just a pain. No search option is also strange as well as is not being able to categorize by country dialect (from what I have found).

Most intuitive way to learn

I adore Lingopie. My Spanish has improved more in the past month of using it than it has from years of me using other language learning apps. I feel like I can finally understand how people actually use the language informally. And it’s FUN. Lingopie is a bit buggy at times but I think this is because it is relatively new. Support Lingopie so they can expand! Can’t wait to see what shows and movies they offer in the future!

Amazing app!

Lingopie is just what I’ve been looking for. I was a solid francophone 20 years ago and would like to revive my abilities. The shows are engaging and with subtitles you can click on any word to see the translation. It saves the words you looked up and reviews them with flash cards. You can even see the clip where it was used in the video. I’m really impressed and happy there is a family plan so my husband can practice too.

Good idea, poor execution

I love this idea. However, the exercises are very badly written.

There are several multiple-choice exercises that have the same answer two or three times, but only one is correct.

For example, for the definition of "está," the choices were "you have," "it is," "done," and "it is." How am I to know which "it is" to use? I tapped one and was marked incorrect.

The same thing happened later with "es," only this time THREE of the choices could be correct: "it is," "it is," and "he is" were all among the choices.

Also, the text underneath the challenge word usually doesn't even include the challenge word -- it's just some random phrase from somewhere near that part. So you can't even use contextual hints.

Until these issues are fixed, the only thing this is good for is watching videos. I can find plenty of content online without paying for Lingopie.

Wonderful language learning app and service

Lots of media content to learn a new language from, and so far I’ve been enjoying this app very much. I struggle with learning Spanish and any foreign language really, but I feel like I’m finally learning something little by little the more I watch the movies and tv shows and study the dialogue. Thank yo everyone involved with this app and keep up the good work and app updates!

Terrible service and bad customer service

I downloaded Lingopie to try to learn Russian, but the sound quality was awful/unbearable. There was this weird feedback, similar to when a microphone is held near an amp and it gives off that annoying fuzzy sound, and it actually physically hurt my ears to listen. When I asked for a refund because of this issue, customer service just gave me a very standard response that the trial period had ended and I couldn't be issued a refund, despite the fact that their service was not of good quality. Good companies don't ignore valid complaints from their customers. Don't bother with Lingopie!

this app is more than incredible

i sucked at spanish
tried for years never could get it

got Lingopie from a friend who became fluent through it and i’m understanding full length conversations now everything is starting to stand out and be emphasized in my mind

i think why this app works is because it allows you to PAUSE any word on the screen and it gives you the definition so it’s instant learning

i’ve been on this app for a brief month and have already added more than 500 words to my arsenal

imagine a year?

download this. pay the $50 (should be $500!!!!). it’s worth it!!!! trust me

also join Tandem to meet spanish speakers and practice the language through video chat — also worth $50!!!!!!

Updating my one star review

They have a LOT of issues to fix. Contacting customer service is guaranteed. I set up an account that wasn’t being found by this app. So I was not able to be remembered after loggin in and I was not able to watch videos after paying. this app created a new account for me and now Lingopie works for me. I love it. This will help me greatly learn Russian.

By

Brilliant

This makes so much sense. I always have music or a show on in the background, and now it can be in french! I can slow down the speed of the show to hear better and have more time to pause to save words or phrases i dont recognize. Then, i am able to go back later and review and study them!

By

I haven’t tried it yet but I am willing to learn a new language

I saw Lingopie on an add. And having tried to learn a language with duolingo before I am going to try Lingopie I will submit a follow up to this within a week.

By

Many Errors

There are frequent misinterpretations. The captions are frequently wrong with simple things like masculine versus feminine and singular versus plural forms. I wonder what else is incorrect. That defeats the purpose of learning from Lingopie because a person will learn incorrectly. The captions should be read and written by humans that actually pay attention, not a program or someone not paying attention.

Needless to say, I will not be renewing this subscription.

The developer did reply to my review to ask if I reported the mistakes. Here’s my reply: I paid for the subscription. It is not my job to report the mistakes, which are a lot. The developer’s reply is insulting.

Also, there needs to be a search feature to input a show’s title. Also, there needs to be a way to narrow down shows by region like Columbian Spanish versus Argentinian Spanish.

By

The subtitles don’t match

Invested in it thinking that the subtitles would match what’s being said, well they don’t, I regret it. I could have just canceled it after the trial but I really thought they were going to match and paid the year subscription. Do the trial, as it may not help you. I am very disappointed. Even chrome has good videos with subtitles. And for free.

So helpful and fun

I love Lingopie! I was honestly happily surprised that it’s as effective and entertaining as it is. Keep adding more great content and languages.

They will not cancel your supscription

If you are having trouble canceling your subscription with this company, you can call your bank and ask them to block the vendor. After trying to contact them for a customer support they stopped responding to my emails and have been taking money out of my account without my consent.
The links to my profile to change my subscription do not work. It is fraudulent and missleading. I do not recommend this company.

By

Don’t fall for it.

Once you buy Lingopie and are forced to subscribe, it’s not so easy to cancel. You can’t just go in Lingopie store and cancel it through there NOR can you cancel your subscription through Lingopie like it says online. You’re going to need to contact apple DIRECTLY to have them cancel it. Waste of my time and money. Why make it so easy to subscribe but so hard to cancel? Sounds like a scam to me.

By

Doesn’t give you the option to cancel the subscription on the “profile page”

I tried to cancel the free subscription almost immediately after I downloaded Lingopie. However when I tried to do it through Lingopie and on their website it doesn’t even allow you the option to. So I was charged $60 and cannot even try to cancel it.

By

Can Not Cancel Subscription

Lingopie claims that you can cancel the subscription “ANYTIME”, but makes it very difficult to do so. I tried calling and sending an email. I received a message on the business phone line that the company was not available and have not received a response to the email I sent. Is this a scam? I want to cancel this account!

By

False advertising

I downloaded this because there was an advertisement showing that Russian was available. I downloaded Lingopie and it offers me Spanish, which I already know, and French, which I never care to learn because France is terrible. On top of that they want to charge me. What a disappointment.

By

So helpful!

Awesome! Makes Spanish more relatable and easy to learn. Tailored to my needs — so cool!

Subscripts don’t work

The subscripts never work so it’s pointless and makes learning harder

NOT FREE

It’s not free and there is not even a demo to try before you subscribe. Not for me and DELETE

Walter A Batycki   10 months ago

I just signed up for the free one week trial. Lingopie then immediately tried to charge my card for $36 AND I got a fraud alert from my bank asking if I was attempting to make the purchase. To protect myself I said "NO" so I would not be charged for the "free" trial. My bank then cancelled my credit card and would not reactivate it and now I have to wait several days for a new card which messes up my entire life. The "free" trial deception and fraud red flag at my bank have made me want to stay far away from Lingopie, no matter how great the features looked. I will never try it now. I have wasted precious time trying to fix the damage the credit card they destroyed has caused and now I have recurring payments that will bounce for services I need and use.
