4.8 out of 5
Nice idea, horrible execution

I do not believe English is the developer’s first language. Either that or they hired terrible writers. I noticed before I purchased it was hard to understand the message because it was so lamely written, but then I thought well it will probably get better. It didn’t. I got a refund. Plus sometimes it’s confusing as to what artwork they’re comparing something to. One story had a small image in the middle, no caption (??), so I thought it might be the comparison referenced to the original art but when I clicked on it for a larger image (and maybe a reference to what I am looking at) it opened to a blank screen. Main issue, though, is simply horribly explained.

Awesome but BUGGY app for art historians

2nd review (two-star): I’ve been a paid subscriber for close to a year. Suddenly all my premium content is locked. Cannot restore purchases. Cannot make purchases. This still gets two stars for at least having a great home screen widget. But it’s useless if you can’t access to see who the artist is.

1st review (five-star): I’m working towards my masters in art history and I adore SmartArt. I’ll be sending it along to my instructors and classmates for sure. Would be great if you could sort the giant page of works you can go to by category, e.g., if I want to sort all the abstract art by date, artist name, or the name of the work.

Beautiful app held behind a pay wall

I wish there was an app that wanted to educate people and not worry about making a profit from subscriptions, SmartArt looks wonderful but I cant tell you anything about it because I do not want to pay 7.99 a month to use it! I’d much rather have ads and use SmartArt and then further choose to buy ad free AFTER being able to use SmartArt and explore the features. There’s more beneficial ways to make money from your app that help you AND the consumer. Very few can afford this on top of all other subscriptions the average person has.

too limited :^(

SmartArt itself is great, but what a non-subscriber is given access to is far too limited. there should be a better balance between what anyone could access, and what is specifically only for those who pay for the subscription. in addition, i wish the articles (at least the available ones) would go a little bit more in depth on the artwork/historical context they discuss. it’s hard to see why i would have a meaningful experience on SmartArt as opposed to using a resource like smarthistory, which is entirely free.

however, i do recognize that SmartArt developer just wants to be compensated for their efforts — i just don’t see myself personally feeling the need to spend money for a potentially better experience.

Enough to satisfy most.

I paid for the unlimited over subscription and there is so much content that 95% of users will never use half of what is available. No bugs/runs smooth on iPhone 12.

Great art history, distracting typos

This is a great app for learning about art history in an engaging way. The articles are not too long nor too short for daily lessons. The only reason I hesitate to pay for unlimited access is poor proofreading from time to time. For example, the Le Nain brothers article has the sentence “But why wouldn’t their complete the image?” in large italics. I might still buy SmartArt . After all, art people aren’t English majors like me. Unfortunately, I can’t give SmartArt 5 stars.

A thing of beauty

SmartArt is my personal space to decompress and be cheered by beautiful art and the history behind it.
I am still catching up with the navigation which is a bit confusing to me but doesn’t detract from the enjoyment.
The subscription is worth having and I am happy to support the work that brings beauty into my life.

A wonderful way to learn more about art history

Thank you so much for SmartArt! I have no suggestions it is perfect.

Though I am not painter nor photographer but I’m greatly impressed by the God”s gift given to you while can’t do except the admiration enjoy .many thanks to you

Love it could also be better

I don’t like subscription services. Wish I could just purchase the full thing.

No complaints

this is probably my favorite art history app, it has so much art and doesn’t just stick to popular modern artist like Van Gogh and Picasso. I really love the art widget, I have no complaints just hoping it adds more art (to its already massive art count) :)

Such an enjoyable way to experience the deeper stories of art!

I so enjoy this quick deep dive into art. The images are excellent and the information brings the art to life in a new way.

This app is a gem!

I LOVE this amazing and incredibly beautiful Art app. I’ve been a subscriber for years. A person could not see this much art and learn all about it if they spent all day every day going to museums.

Impressed

I enjoy SmartArt. It’s one of the better art related reference and interactive apps. It has fun quizzes and wonderful info on great pieces. I found it informative and slightly more advanced than others which was the best part. I’m so happy I found it.

Enjoying and learning a lot

Have really enjoyed SmartArt and learned a lot. Love that I can save favorites. Needed technical support at one point and they were incredible. Definitely a great download and purchase (did the one time purchase for full access).

Amazing

Best app to learn art history hands down! The stories are concise and entertaining, the pieces and artists are organized into their historic periods and locations, and SmartArt is very well designed. The widget keeps me hooked; I’m constantly waiting for a new painting to pop up lol. Thank you for SmartArt. Amazing.

Dear Marina, ignore all those people who write those bad reviews. They are just being negative. I for one LOVE SMART ART!!! It’s so good, I love how they make jokes, and how they have a new article up at the top every day. I am only 9 years old, and my mom has SmartArt, I tried it out, I knew I had to download it on my phone… And… I am VERY, VERY, HAPPY!!!!!! P.S. Please respond!

Love this app

I am passionate about art and I love SmartArt because I learn from it, I enjoy it and it entertains me in an incredible way
