4.7 out of 5
No solution, no refund

I really enjoyed the application. It began to have issues a short while ago, late October. There was just a blank screen and no matter what I did, it changed nothing. When I was able to read the articles, they were only the free articles, although I paid $41 to be a premium content subscriber.

After many messages back and forth with LearnGerman designer, still no solution. I don’t believe they fully understand what it is that is wrong, due to the fact they are asking me to perform a number of actions that are not possible (“select this after you do this and you will see this icon. Select this icon and you should be able to read premium content”). I don’t see these icons and I have sent screenshots to allow for better understanding of what it is that I am seeing. Still, they instruct me to follow their instruction and watch a video demonstration on how to correct the problem.

Asked for a refund but no response.

Great app if it wasn’t locked to a single device

Good for language learning, very helpful compared to memorization apps, however unlike every other app where you make an account and log in with a password (and a phone number, and some other verification measures) it’s only accessible on the device I first downloaded it on. When I got a new phone LearnGerman automatically creates a new account, there is no “log in” mechanism anywhere. As a result my premium account was permanently stuck on a device I was no longer using, and so I was forced to cancel my subscription, which I liked and would have kept using, but didn’t want to be changed twice. Also because I couldn’t access my account from any other device I could only attempt to cancel through PayPal and continued to be charged anyway for something I wanted to use but couldn’t use. I don’t know if this is their answer to concerns about password sharing but it’s not a good one

Excellent concept, weak continued support

The idea and concept for LearnGerman is excellent. My very first impression was excellent, but I’m glad I gave it week of use before rating. It seems like some of the stories have real voices reading them, but then some of the newer ones have AI voices. While it’s impressive how far AI voices have come, I wouldn’t pay $10 per month to learn a foreign language from a robot voice. That’s more appropriate for something with a free version like Duolingo. Also, it doesn’t seem like they have added any C1 content for a couple months, which is the content I would be most interested in. Lastly, there isn’t any mechanism by which the user can report bugs, errors or mistakes. I see many stories where the quizzes are buggy (it just displays single numbers as questions and answers) and I just tried an older B2 story where the audio won’t load and it loads the same single translation word for every word starting a couple sentences in. I’ll glean what I can from LearnGerman, but will probably cancel after 1 or 2 months max, which is a shame, because this would likely be an app I would perpetually subscribe to, despite the high monthly price, if it were less “abandoned” feeling to me.

Decent Training but with an iPad Glitch

It’s a very nice way to improve German reading skills for A1-C. The vocabulary trainer is also quite good with one glaring problem. As you accumulate words to practice, you’ll place them in categories reflecting how well you know each word.

The glitch is triggered if you’re reviewing a category of, say, ‘Good’ words, meaning that you feel close to having them memorized, and you decide to go read another short story. You cannot exit the word training without finishing all the words in the category you are in. So, if you have 50 ‘Good’ words you’re practicing and decide after doing 15, that you’d like to exit and read some stories, LearnGerman will not let that happen until you’ve reviewed all 50 words. There is a ‘back’ arrow but it fails to function on the iPad.

Missing basic features

LearnGerman sounds great in theory, but it’s very poorly executed. I paid the full annual subscription, only to find out that it is missing such basic functionalities as:
1. No Spaced Repetition System for actually remembering the words you learn.
2. No ability to customize reminders to fit your schedule.
3. No synchronization between devices — if I make some progress on my phone and then want to continue on my iPad it is just not possible.
I find it shocking that such simple things are missing. Otherwise it could be a great app as the content is really well curated.

Pretty good - after I learned the routine.

It took me a while to figure out what I could do for free. Once I figured that out I’ve been using it everyday and it is great. I think they could make this better by improving the UI. I’ve had LearnGerman a while and almost deleted it because I found it hard to get into a daily routine. If it was clear what a free user could/should try to do daily then users would be more likely to keep LearnGerman and use it daily. From there maybe more paid users would come. Otherwise it is a great language learning tool. Good job!

Beautiful and educational

Love LearnGerman, thank you !
The annoying downfall is as you scroll down the list of the topics, it loads more topics, great , right? , but the list moves up and you lose where you were , then you have to go up and down to figure out where you were! Wish it would load without messing it up!
Also, it takes time to develop an opinion and enough experience to rate! However , as soon as you start LearnGerman, the window of rate-this-app appears!

Excellent, but…

LearnGerman is by far one of the best for reading I have found, but it could be better. I have also been using graded readers and I can’t stress enough how important it is to learn vocabulary, in German. LearnGerman would be 10x better if they had a German dictionary option you could toggle to. Monolingual dictionary has done so much for me when I felt like I had stopped making progress, so please add the option for it.

Useful

Levels of the stories are akkurate, so select your level.
First you will read the story, then you can audio play it. It is easier to understand the audio after you have read the text and looked up all the words that you don’t know by clicking on each word. Then you take a quiz with single choice questions, and finish the module with the review of all the grammar and new vocabulary.

effective, practical, and interesting

VERY PRACTICAL if you don’t have much time- short articles, and as learning the vocab in context like this has been scientifically proven to be better, i actually see now that it is! it’s much easier to remember vocab because you now have a connection of that word to a context in some interesting article. PLUS the STORIES ARE COOL AND INTERESTING. from someone who hates flashcards and duolingo and all those other junk apps but still loves languages and wants to learn, I SINCERELY RECOMMEND THAT YOU TRY THIS OUT

Natural language, great learning tool

You’ll learn German words in the context they’re written which helps with memory retention. Comprehension quizzes get harder as you read higher levels. Grammar examples are helpful to direct your attention to the sentence structure. They also have flashcards.

It’s great! Just read a story, tap a word you don’t know, and save it for practice by taping the free weights icon. You’ll be able to review your flashcards and categorize them by how well you remember to practice again and again.

Learning German with interesting readings

Interesting, useful and and fun. You’ll do a short reading where you’ll learn new vocabulary. You can click on the words for meaning and pronunciation as well as to listen to the audio as you read on. Afterwards, you can take a brief comprehension quiz, check grammar rules, and do it all over to remember the words. It takes me less than 10 minutes a day, but with consistency and reinforcement LearnGerman can tangibly improve your German to fluency. I really love it!

Great for all reading levels

My wife and I are learning German. Our levels are different and LearnGerman has reading levels from beginners to advanced.

LearnGerman is also the smoothest reading app. If you don’t know a word just click on it and it will show you what it means.

AND EVEN better is the fact that it shows what a separable prefix verb means. In German there are many verbs that that split a verb. brennen-to burn ausbrennen- to burn out.....Most apps will just show what brennen means and thus translate wrong. The fact they took the time is very impressive!!!!

Now the downside..... After reading 100+ stories... there is no way to filter by unread. After a while you have to scroll pretty far down. And heaven forbid you accidentally press back while reading because then you have to down scroll till you find it again. This needs to be fixed.

Excellent German learning app!

I don’t write reviews often at all, but I felt compelled to write one for LearnGerman. I’ve tried probably 6-8 German language learning apps and this is the best one for my learning style, by far. You simply select stories/articles that are written in various difficulties that align with international testing standards (A1, A2, B1, B2, etc.). If you don’t understand a word, click on it to see the definition and translation. Furthermore, save it for your flashcards to keep learning it in the future. A1 stories are easy enough for a kindergartner to understand but they’re written about more adult-ey topics (and are therefore more interesting than reading a children’s book in German). On the other hand, C1 stories are advanced and probably difficult for even many Germans to fully understand or comprehend. It’s an excellent app and deserves more recognition, for sure.

Great for different learning styles

One of my favorite German learning apps to date. It mixes context-based learning of vocabulary and grammar with the option for flashcard-like memorization/reinforcement of user selected words. In addition, users have the opportunity to work not only on reading but hearing comprehension as well with the “play sound” feature at the top of each article. The articles are interesting and cover a diverse array of topics to keep the user engaged. Overall, I think the concept and execution of LearnGerman is one of the best I’ve come across in my language learning journey thus far.

Actually Learn the Language

LearnGerman is the perfect complement to more course-based or grammar-oriented apps like Duolingo or Busuu. If the readings were all you got, it’d still be great. But the ability to click on any word in a story and get a definition (and even a conjugation paradigm for verbs!) is fantastic. You can also add any word to your training list for review later.

The ability to filter stories by comprehension level (A1 to C1) allows you to get just the right amount of comprehensible input so that you’re not overwhelmed by unfamiliar words.

I’d recommend Readle to anyone who has achieved A1 comprehension or higher in their target language.

Best App for Learning German

LearnGerman is a game changer. It’s well-designed, regularly updated, and has many ingenious features. Thanks to practicing on here regularly for some weeks, I’ve impressed the teacher in every beginner German class I’ve attended. This is the best way to learn new vocabulary, which is SO important at the beginning level. I learn (and retain!) all kinds of words here that will not appear in most A1/A2 materials; thus, LearnGerman enables me to express a larger variety of thoughts than I would otherwise be able to and prepares me to get the most out of immersive language instruction. It’s my only paid subscription on Apple because it’s the only app worth paying for.

Love this learning style!

This is absolutely how I learn. But I would love to have 2 features added if possible.
1. If it’s possible can y’all add the option where when a word is clicked, the pronunciation of that word will be read instead of having to listen to the whole passage to hear how to pronounce that word.
2. If the English translation of the whole passage can be provided in the way the translation of the title is provided, so the users can see the context instead of only knowing the translation of the individual words and having to piece them together.

If y’all would be kind enough to consider these two features, it will be greatly appreciated!

Best app for learning to read German!

This is my favorite app to learn German (I have a lot - Duolingo, Busuu, Babbel, etc.). Having a dedicated app that focuses primarily on reading by offering stories written by the levels A1, A2, B1, B2, etc. is critical for reading progression. Having built in word definitions and grammar lookup is awesome. And then having audio by word, sentence, and the entire story PLUS the option to control the audio speed is incredible. You need LearnGerman if you are serious about learning German. I used to buy eBooks at the A1, etc. levels, but there was no built in audio, or grammar aids. Just subscribe to LearnGerman and you will save money and have greater functionality and user enjoyment and productivity than trying to duplicate LearnGerman ’s features using other products. Vielen Dank to the developers for nailing the critical needs of German learning customers!

First time I’ve found a great way to learn German

This is amazing! I love the way LearnGerman is created for people like me that needs to find the meaning, translation (cause English is my second language), repetition of words or phrases by listening and speaking, etc. in the moment. I enjoy it! The stories, the exercises, the quizzes; EVERYTHING! Thank you , thank you, thank you…! I promised myself I will keep practicing everyday of the week and I WILL.
