I really wanted to love this app

I really wanted to love Onyx! While we’re isolating in the midst of COVID, it seems like a dream to have a trainer give you real-time feedback about your form. I did a couple of workouts during the one-week trial and then signed up for the annual subscription. Unfortunately as I started using Onyx more, I found the tracking functionality to be poor. It would simply not track my movements and when you are physically pushing yourself to the limits, it’s beyond frustrating to not have your exercises tracked. I contacted customer service, who replied promptly and was very nice, but he gave me like six different things I had to do to make the tracking feature work (be inside, not too close, not too far, pull up your hair, don’t let other people in and out of the frame, etc), all of which are not super easy to do when you are trapped in a house with your family and pets. I tried again with all the guidance and still, app wasn’t tracking my movements. Sooo frustrating.
I was less than a month into my subscription and requested to cancel my subscription and get a pro-rated discount for the remaining 11 months. Sadly for me, the very nice customer service rep says that’s an apple thing and out of his control. Bummer, I’m out the money for an entire year.
I love the concept of Onyx, but am super disappointed that I have paid a full year for essentially a beta product.

The app has tons of potential but lacks workouts

Onyx is exactly what I was looking for. The ability to track my movements, the fact that it tells you when your form needs adjustment, the reminders and ability to track workouts including how well you do them is awesome. HOWEVER, the amount of workouts and programs available is very limited. I’m the kind of person that gets bored of workouts aren’t continually changing. I would go through all of them in about 4 months. Half that if I wants starting from beginning level. And even less than that if I wanted to workout for more than 10/15 minutes per workout. I wish there was a monthly membership or the promise that the company was going to keep adding workouts to make the yearly or lifetime membership worth it. It’s a good option for people who don’t mind doing the same thing over and over over again.

Updated Review after more use...

I am currently using the free trial and initially enjoyed my experience. At first it seemed to be a good replacement for boot camp classes during COVID-19. The tracking has been accurate except for one time is was off my three push ups. I just wish the workouts were longer and offered more variety. Tonight I wanted to do an arm workout.
As I scrolled through the various options, I realized each instructor was basically using the same 3-5 exercises. This is what made me decide to cancel the week trial. It’s fine for a week trial, but I’m not going to keep repeating these same exercises over the course of a year. I want more variety and longer workouts. There is potential with Onyx, but it still has a way to go. I hope improvements will be made. I would reconsider down the road.

Best Workout App I’ve Ever Used!

I just downloaded Onyx a couple days ago and love that the workouts on Onyx are very similar to my physical gym workouts. I’ve tried a lot of different workout apps and this one is my favorite because I like that it uses the camera to watch if you’re doing the exercises correctly and will tell you if you need to move faster or slower for the exercises to be most effective. The only thing I don’t like about Onyx is that it doesn’t tell me if I have to start paying for the workouts after however many days. There’s no way an app this great can be free, right??

So cool!

As someone who hates working out, I actually love Onyx and really cannot recommend it enough. I especially like how the trainer corrects your stance/form while you’re working out. I find the leaderboard motivating, and love seeing my improvements over time. this app is so smart and helpful, and I actually find myself looking forward to using it (which is weird, for me).

My only suggestion is to create a way to “favorite” certain workouts so that users can remember which ones they really liked (or ones that they want to try in the future)! Would mainly allow me to plan my upcoming workouts more effectively.

SO FREAKING AWESOME!!!

I just want to say a big THANK YOU!!!! Onyx is so freaking amazing!! I just had my second baby and I gained so much weight after having him. Not able to get into the gym because I’m a full time mama and just started my own business so it’s so hard to make time to go to the gym but y’all made this amazing app that I can do right at home! I wish I could just hugs y’all for making this!! The workouts are awesome. Not too easy and not too hard. Thank you again! This experience has been awesome!! Xoxo -Bree

Bad design

Half of the time, the instructor is facing profile, even though you’re supposed to face towards the camera always. Was confusing at first, and there’s no indicator to tell you to re-orient yourself - it just stops counting.

On iPhone 12 mini, half the exercises don’t track at all. No info that you’re doing it wrong, just zero tracking no matter how hard you try. You exert more focus on whether the number of reps on Onyx are going up rather than your form.

On top of all that, on the very beginner exercise, after 15 minutes of frustration trying to do the exercises in a way that Onyx will properly count them, Onyx CRASHED at the conclusion of the program, and none of the progress was saved. According to Onyx , I’ve done zero exercises. Extremely frustrated.

So frustrating and not even worth Black Friday pricing.

Onyx is so great, then it stops tracking you. You end up over exaggerating moves, changing the location of your phone, inevitably getting so frustrated that you stop mid workout to try and help some people avoid the frustration by writing a review. I like the short workouts. I don’t have much of an excuse to say, “I can’t workout for 5 minutes” but when that turns into 10 minutes trying to get this to track you, you would rather spend your energy throwing your phone. Then you remember, it’s Onyx designers that can’t figure this out. I’m trying to let off some steam by working out, but here I am applauding your faulty programming and some high school coding project. Bravo.

Very Interactive and Precise 💫

Love Onyx. I’ve only used it twice and I already love it, that I plan to even purchase it. I didn’t think it would be as accurate as advertised, but it really is. I love how it tracks all of your workouts and has a trainer push you while you actually work out. I also like how it is synced with Apple 🍎 Health app to track your movements and calories which also syncs to my Apple Watch. I just wish I can have it somehow project to my Smart TV as well.

interactive 3D motion system tech is cool, keeps me honest

I always enjoy trying new apps and tech, this app keeps my form honest on my calisthenic workouts and is strarting to keep me more consistent too. With not many gym or workout partners to come by in quarantine, definitely enjoyed my time here. Sometimes the outline visual is not always clear lined but I still have noticed accurate feedback in that time. As the tech and phone cameras get better too, I’m sure it will improve...

Issues with positioning

I had Onyx for 2 days and Onyx will not access my camera on my iPad. I was thinking using my iPad, it would get a better view of me. I used my iPhone 3 pro max and Onyx kept telling me there was an issue. I emailed support and have no received an email back. Please help I really like Onyx overall. I like it more if it could access my camera better. I will keep trying.

Super helpful

I run two companies at the same time and take care of kids. Sometimes I have just no time to workout. With the this app app I can workout before I get my kids ready for school, use it to kickstart my day, or anywhere I have free time. I love the fact that it tells me what I’m doing wrong and helps me fix it and I love the fact that I can see for myself how I’m performing. Onyx is amazing and I look forward to using it.

Very motivating

I came across the video on reddit. Interesting to see where this went with the content and competition beyond just tracking. The tracking actually worked really well for me. The best part in my opinion is the motivation you get both from the competition aspect, and also the fact that it’s “watching” you and nudging you to do better. I’d love to have a way to compete with my friends!

Absolutely love

Onyx is beyond amazing you can’t slack or they will call you out on it lol which I love it calculates all movements and and keeps track of your progress . I also love the fact that if you feel that you didn’t go hard enough on one set you can go back and try again I highly recommend Onyx to everyone

By

It’s ok if you like repetition

I was excited and used Onyx to workout for a couple of weeks until I realized that it’s the same workout over and over again but mixed in different programs. That’s fine if you like repetition and don’t get bored easily but after two months, I don’t see myself using it as often as I did when I first started out.

It would be great if there were weekly/monthly new workouts. That would keep the momentum going.

It gets tiring and the premium cost is not worth it if you get bored easily.

Love the form feedback!

I’ve been looking for something that helps me understand my form. I’ve been recording a lot of my workouts and sending them to a trainer friend to get feedback, so it’s pretty amazing to get it in real time! Also I like that it shows you the video example before you start each exercise so you have some time to remember how to do it.

It’s all about consistency

I downloaded Onyx almost a month ago, since then I’ve been very consistent with my workouts, the best thing is even if you don’t have enough time there are short workouts that will fit in your busy schedule 👌

3 to 5 minutes workout everyday = a healthy and happy life ✨

What a fantastic app

Found out Onyx on ProductHunt on the launch day. Installed it just to see how it works, tried few workouts and then stopped using it. Missed the gym today and thought of giving it a try and I completely fell in love with it. Had a kickass workout. Thank you to the entire team for developing such an amazing product. 💪

More motivation?

I’m a lazy person and with Onyx you only get a notification like a week to remind you to work out I just want to be reminded more frequently. Onyx is great but for lazy people like myself it be nice if we could turn on more notifications so we would be more motivated. Also a timer would be nice in between sets.

Amazing

Onyx was amazing this was my first time using and I was pumped and confident in myself I have never completed a work before this is the first for me this was amazing I recommend this for anyone that is try to be active or start a change in life style

Really one of the best

My landlord advised me Onyx. I liked it very much. You can share work out plans and your progress with friends and community. There is a lot of work out plans that you are able to use even not buy an elite version of Onyx.

Has some pros and cons...

Overall a good app for doing some more advancement movements... though I wish this would work better during the day for outdoor workouts.... I like to go out for a run and would be great to do a few of these classes halfway through my run... tried to do this at the beach the other day. Did not go so well...

Music: music could be much better ... need some too 40... to be able to stream in the background...

also, Onyx sometimes freezes and doesn’t count your reps as accurately.

Over all for the price and what it does it’s a fun app to make you do the work...

So not worth the money

The free trial was good! There should be free and a premium. Instead they give you a two wk free trial and then it’s $99 for the year or $15 a month. I rather go to planet fitness it’s $10 a month. You guys need to have options. Have certain things for free and some for premium. But Onyx is just like all the others cost money. Onyx itself is cool because it tracks your progress, but definitely not worth the money.

The best fitness app out there!

This fitness app is a must. It motivates you to work harder and tracks your results as you go along. If you’re looking for consistent improvement, a personalized tracking experience, and an increase in motivation- you need to get Onyx!

By

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

The calibration in Onyx is beyond TERRIBLE. If Onyx was free then fine, but Onyx has the worst calibration of ANY home workout app out there. Only about 1/3 of your reps will be counted.

Additionally, there is an annoying voice repeating “You’re in first place” when I wasn’t even in the top 150. What is the point of this useless feature?

There is also a lack of customizable options- like the ability to turn off the narrator or at least lower their volume.

By

Frozen

When I first got it, I was always working out with Onyx .. I stop for a bit and try to use it again but for some reason when it goes from 3 2 1 it freezes and it doesn’t go from there..

By

The Best

That is the best fitness app that I have used. Camera tracking works nice, UI and UX are really cool and smooth (thanks to client designers and engineers). It motivates you to workout more! Totally recommend it. Thank you guys for such an awesome product, worth every dollar.
