Not worth it.

2022-05-21

BookSloth is just getting worse. It crashes when adding books and when loading member profiles. I’ve been given awards I haven’t earned. the search isn’t working and even when it was you still couldn’t find books because the list was completely unorganised and most of them aren’t on there at all. They say they upload books every few days but it’s been months and the books that are requested aren’t being added.

“Personal recommendations” not very personal

2022-06-22

I downloaded this in hopes of finding an app that offered actual personal recommendations based on books that I’ve liked and rated highly. This says that it gives you personal recommendations, but looking through the list they do not look very personal at all… they are mostly newly released books that have one rating.
I’m also not a fan of the “discover” section, which prioritizes genres that are not genres I’m interested in.
When searching, many of the books I’ve read and searched for don’t even appear in the results. Also in relation to the searches, when i type in the exact title, the book doesn’t appear until the 4th or 5th result… again, appearing to prioritize new books with fewer reviews.
I think BookSloth would be great for someone who is looking for new release recommendations. I think the discussion feature is a cool idea with a lot of potential, but more reviews are needed to make this useful.

Good in theory, not in execution

2022-07-23

A few things- It has a very small selection of books and doesn’t even include literary classics such as Tess of the d'Urbervilles or Agnes Grey. As a fan of classic literature, I expect even the basics like I stated, to be available. I got BookSloth in hopes it would recommend me books similar to my taste, which brings me to my next point.

If BookSloth doesn’t even have simple literary classics, how can I expect my recommendations to actually fit? I was immediately given new YA novels and bestselling books of this year, when I only had “historical fiction, classic and literature” as selected genres.

I feel if BookSloth had a bigger selection (of even the most popular titles...) this could be great! But for now, I’m going to stick with bookbub.

Eh

2022-08-24

I will definitely come back to try it later. For the most part it’s a smooth runner as far as scrolling around and using the search functions. Definitely needs more book data and I like that there is a thing to submit for that and I like the little sloth image I think it’s a nice touch. Having trouble with good reads stuff and I really dislike that it seems to auto log me out on my phone literally all the time.

Buggy but with potential! (+suggestions!)

2022-09-25

It has potential because it provides a lot of ways to customize our profile, getting to know our tastes, interact with the community and much more.

But! It’s very buggy and crashes a bit, I know that it’s in process but hopefully they’ll fix it up because the option of import from goodreads is not working? Or is it me?

Suggestions:

* It’ll be cool if they provide us with half star rating system that way it’ll be easier to rate books. Because some apps *cough* doesn’t have one. *cough*

* Night mode option. Because....dark.

* Even though there’s a recommendations section (which is bomb) it’ll be amazing if it had a favorites sections

Some issues but definitely promising

2022-10-26

The ability to import from Goodreads is not working but I heard that it’s because a lot of people joined very quickly and they are working on it, so hopefully that gets fixed soon. BookSloth crashes every time you try to do you even the simplest thing. It won’t let me look at who certain people are following or who I’m following without it crashing and if I stay in the discussion column for too long, it will also crash. I can tell it needs a lot of bug fixes but the layout is super cool and I hope that BookSloth will improve as more and more people join and use it!

Excited for expansion

2022-11-27

I will absolutely revisit this review. My current rating of 3 stars is simply because BookSloth is still growing and, personally, I’m excited about it. I’ve been pretty bummed about the recommendations I’ve been getting through Goodreads. They’ve been really repetitive. Last night I moved what I had, and what was available, to this app and I’m already getting great recommendations. The books available are quite limited right now, but I’m well aware it will take BookSloth time to get there. The layout is wonderful and I can’t wait to see how it comes along. In the meantime, I’ll read something 😁

potential but not usable currently

2022-12-28

i downloaded it looking for an alternative to goodreads (because goodreads looks so bad and looks like it was made in 2014). i don’t enjoy goodreads recommendations either, as it really caters to really popular books, rather than catering to the users genuine taste. i’ve been attempting to find an app that would be updated on new and anticipated books, as well as book lists, and recommendations. this has a lot of potential, although i attempted to log in my goodreads library and a majority of them haven’t been added in yet. i understand that it’s currently in beta right now but i’m hoping book lovers will move over to this once it’s available and out of beta! i’m excited for a different platform thats new and looks refreshing!

Potential

2023-01-29

I’m excited for the potential of BookSloth. As other reviewers have said, the books available are *severely* limited. since I want an alternative to goodreads so badly, and because I admire the work being done, I’m willing to stick around through the growing pains. I assume building a huge database is a lot of work but I hope they’re able to get it to the size of goodreads.

Still Exploring

2023-03-02

I’m really happy to have found BookSloth! Goodreads feels outdated and has so much to improve, and this app seems to have already honed in on aspects that are important for book lovers. The fact that the first thing that pops up in my homepage is book lists separated by minority authors had me falling in love the moment I opened BookSloth . I’ve been really wanting to widen my exposure to Black and Latino authors and I’ve already added multiple books to my “To Be Read” shelf.

Some things that I think still need improvement include the implementation of author profiles. When I click on an author, the only thing I can see is the different books that they published but I can’t see any information about them beyond that or a picture of them. I believe that would be a great addition to the platform.

I also hope that eventually there can be more options to create original shelves. I like to separate the books that I want to read into separate categories which doesn’t seem like something I can do on BookSloth yet.

Anyway, BookSloth shows a lot of potential, and I can’t wait to see what improvements are implemented in the updates!

Love the app

2023-03-31

I think BookSloth is great, is obviously similar to goodreads but i love the style so much better. Unfortunately this is a small community with BookSloth right now, so I SINCERELY hope more people will start using it. It has challenges too so thats always fun. The only thing i can say i dont really like is that it only has maybe half my bookshelf, so you’ll have to suggest a book (in BookSloth you can suggest books for them to post so you can add it to your collection) just so that way you can search it to add it. Other than that its a really great app i hope the community grows too.

Want this to be the new goodreads!

2023-05-02

I’m addicted to goodreads but find it less than appealing and so user-unfriendly. BookSloth seems like the alternative ive been waiting for! However it’ll be hard for me to transition until I’m able to import from goodreads...I have 250 books in my own library alone so adding them one by one will be a chore! Also I do love the scan feature in good reads to add - can we get that into BookSloth? Lastly, for some reason BookSloth won’t let me upload a profile picture. No clue why!

It has potential

2023-06-02

I was looking for something alternative to Goodreads and found this app. I really enjoy the UI, however, there’s definitely room for improvements. Also, BookSloth keeps crashing when I click on a recommended user? I hope that can be fixed. I would like to be able to view their profile before following. Additionally, I cannot wait for the website to FULLY FUNCTION.

I hope more readers discover this app for a wider community.

Fun while it lasted?

2023-07-04

Was recommended this from a member of a book group I’m in on Facebook. I have to say I really like it so far. There’s already a nice selection of books with an easy way to add ones that you don’t already see. Love the interaction with either users. Love how everything is set up. Was having issues logging in earlier today but that seems to have been fixed. Looking forward to seeing how BookSloth evolves.

Pretty great

2023-08-04

I hear is a new app, but the only thing I’m having trouble with is that some of the books I search to try and add to my lists aren’t available. I feel like they should make sure they have more books for us. As a suggestion: there could be a message button on the profiles (so we can exchange more ideas if we like somebody’s review or lists) and a space for promoting websites (book blogs or book tube channels)

Love the community aspect

2023-09-05

It’s nice to meet new people who share an interest in all things books, especially the YA genre. I appreciate the lightweight way of reviewing a book with sentiments and features in their iconography and their recommendations are both personalized and of the moment. Keep up the good work.

Loving it!

2023-10-07

So far I’m loving this as the new alternative for goodreads! One feature I would love to see added, would be a trigger warnings feature. I’m not a sensitive reader, but I know others that are and I think it would such an amazing feature to add since I don’t know of any other app that does.

Sleek Design & Great Overall

2023-11-07

this app is an amazing app from how it feels when you sign in the first time, clean, fast and simple. Just as this application should be in my opinion, I have been wanting an app just like this! It does need some more people though chat rooms are smaller than some should be so John now!

Great for discovery of titles and of friends!

2023-12-09

I love this app! Unlike GoodReads which just uses my Facebook friends to connect me up socially, I get to discover and discuss new books and authors with new people who share my love for reading and all things books. I love the badges, the challenges and the discussion board. So much potential for this product!!

Super User-Friendly

2024-01-09

For a Beta version, having 2,000+ books already in their Data-Base (each one with details) is already a good thing. Also the fact that you can connect with people reading the same books as you, makes it really fun to use. Not to mention the social media feeling because of it. I think they’re off to a good start and I’m excited to see what they come up in future updates.

Not ready for use

2024-11-17

This book could not find many bestselling/popular books. Example: The Last Kingdom.

Only usable with Facebook???!!!

2024-11-17

Already turned off and I just downloaded BookSloth . There is no apparent way to use BookSloth without connecting to Facebook.

Excited for expansion

Definitely needs work

2024-11-17

BookSloth was easy enough to use I didn’t find it super user friendly but it was fine.

I think my main problem with BookSloth is I immediately imputed ratings for some books I loved and hated to try and narrow down recommendations and it didn’t even budge my recommendations even though I entered in quite a few books in fact it was recommending me books I had rated 3 or lower stars on BookSloth even when I refreshed.

I am also confused as to how books get added. I had problems coming up with some books at all. I searched Killing November By Adriana Mather which came up no problem but I tried to find her other series which did not come up at all... so at first I thought BookSloth only really had newly released books which isn’t a major deal since BookSloth is likely still in its starting phase but then I searched up a book published in 2009 that isn’t popular anymore and that came up just fine. As well as did a few others from 5+ years ago but then I went to search new books and books in arc form currently and certain books would pop up but others wouldn’t. I get it’s still a relatively new app but I honestly can’t figure out how they figure out what to add because it seems random I found a ton of unknown and independently published books yet I couldn’t find some NYT Bestsellers... and why you would add one authors book and not the rest of their books.

I also don’t like that you only have the option to cancel or share after you’ve written a review. Canceling will save you’re review but it was very confusing at first because I didn’t want to share as I was just trying to add some books to start I feel like there should be a done button then after you press it you’re given the option to share rather than share or cancel which makes you assume if you don’t share it it’ll cancel your review.

It’s not a bad app but it definitely needs work.

Still growing but still lovable!

2024-11-17

BookSloth is still growing as it runs with a limited amount of books, but I still love it and can’t wait to see what else it’s going to have in stores with future updates—especially if it involves some sort of news feed!

Love the design!!

2024-11-17

I came across this new book recommendation app through social media. It seems to be at an early stage so don’t expect to find every published book. I gave some feedback and they were kind enough to reply within minutes. Cool concept, very easy to use.

Love the design!

2024-11-17

It's easy to use and I love the design for my profile.

Engaging

2024-11-17

I love BookSloth. It’s creative. It’s pleasing to the eye, and it’s user-friendly.
