Doesn’t Work

2024-10-08

Would be lots of fun if it worked for more than two minutes. Then it just stops, can open a game but it won’t let you tap anything, won’t tell you why, just doesn’t work. I’ve put the game on my kids’ iPad and the same thing happens.

Bummer, could be great.

So confusing…

2024-07-27

Tags that look like buttons with bizarre names like “Jelly baby anyone?” You open the puzzles and nothing happens. Literally nothing. You click on the “solve” you’re supposed to be trying to make and it gets bigger, but then when you click the pieces to solve it…nothing. What a waste of a download.

Buggy

2024-02-24

It is buggy. I can’t start even the first puzzle because it isn’t starting the timer when I tap. It’s registering the tap because there is visual feedback on the tile, but the timer doesn’t start. I’ve clicked every single tile. Same issue on all. The tutorial puzzles worked mostly fine. It’s just the first actual puzzle that refuses to work.

In the tutorial section, though, I learned you can tap too fast and it won’t register the second or third tap. For a game that measures speed as part of the score, why on Earth would you be limited to how fast you can tap?

Doesn't work offline

2024-07-27

I purchased the full game, expecting to play it while camping this week. But the game doesn't recognize my purchase when I don't have online access.

It's ridiculous that it needs to verify my purchase every time it starts.

Ps. Some of the colors used in the stencils are difficult for me to distinguish, due to a color vision defiency; this turns an intellectual challenge into a frustrating experience.

Great game

2024-02-22

I literally couldn’t play this game due to the music. Where can you turn the sound off???
It is so annoying when developers don’t take into account that not every single person who uses Stenciletto wants someone else’s choice of grating sounds.

Unplayable and Deceptive. This goes on my Wall of Shame.

2024-07-27

Even though the base game is expensive at $5.99, I wanted to support the developer after reading about her in the news today, so I purchased the game, only to discover that it isn’t playable unless you spend at least $2.99 more, which I refuse to do (Fool me once, shame on you…). And there’s no way to contact the developer to request an immediate refund.

Buggy

2024-07-27

Incredibly buggy. I have in app purchases turned off on my phone. When I launch Stenciletto the error “in app purchases are not allowed” continuously pops up. It never stops. I have to kill Stenciletto , can’t even “look around”. I’m concerned turning on the ability for in app purchases would immediately cause a charge to my Apple Pay. Not cool. Deleted.

Lost $2.99

2024-02-22

Update on my review. Their customer service is outstanding

Unfortunately there is no way to contact developer or have any info how to contact . I started playing and then purchase lifetime lives for $2.99 . Now the game is unresponsive even after restarting it. I want my money back…. Update I got contacted by Apple and Developer and got my money back. Will look into it again when bugs are fixed. I appreciate the quick response of bot Apple and Developers.

Good concept

2024-05-22

I think it’s an amazing concept but I hate the timers (and lives but mostly the timers). It feels like the game is punishing you for playing. I get that some people must like that and I understand the appeal I do, but it’s just too quick. I wish there was a mode without timers which I don’t think would be too difficult to implement. Again, I really like the puzzles themselves but the timer is just unnecessary.

Frustrated Player

2024-06-27

I enjoyed Stenciletto so I paid for immortality. However, it does not work properly. It worked at one time, but when I tried to play it while out of town, it switched back to a mode where I only get two lives. If I purchased immortality, why do I have to wait for lives?

Fun game, some bugs

2024-09-20

I really enjoy this game and bought the immortal lives! However the puzzle in group 4, board 4 doesn’t work. The puzzle displays but I can’t select any of the stencils. Posting this in hopes the developer will fix it, then I’ll update my review.

Potential to be fun

2024-05-08

Possibly this could become a great game, and a good workout for color and shape thinking.
But timers and lives lost makes this a non starter for me or my friends who don’t want any of that. Can we turn off timers? And turn off the comparisons to others, so I can do this at my own pace, my own methods, and I will come back, learn by doing and likely enjoy it…
Until then not interested.
Possibly I could pay for immortality mode and ignore timers and stats, but you started me off with a bad experience, so I am done.

Could be better

2024-05-08

I want to keep playing, but instead lives are lost and I have to wait a few minutes, which is really a turnoff. I even paid the $2.99 for immortality but it does not work as expected— I want unlimited play. Maybe the timer could be an option if you want that challenge, but it makes it less fun for me. I just like trying to figure it out, and play for a while. Maybe if changes are made I’ll try it out again.

Glitchy

2024-10-08

I’m having problems with this game. The last two times I’ve tried to play it I can’t. It doesn’t stack the shapes. When I touch a shape nothing happens. I also bought immortality but can’t use it on the game on my iPad. It shows I have it but doesn’t give me any more lives.

Please update

2024-08-26

I’m enjoying the game, however I wish it saved my progress and transferred to other devices (phone to tablet and vice-versa). There’s no reason for it not to be that way if I’m logged in with the same credentials. Please make some updates.

Game is fun, but hard to know boundaries

2024-10-08

This game could use some more basic info about each level such as min/max amount of layers to solve. Also, the templates can be a bit small which makes it hard to tell slight differences. Also, why would you give more points to a complete clock timeout and retry than changing and succeeding right before clock times out? This teaches that if at first you don’t succeed it’s better to wait out the timer instead of trying to fix. Also - what’s the point of getting higher scores? How do I rate on certain puzzles? What do these puzzles tell me about me? How am I doing? Etc.

Does not correctly register alternate correct solutions

2024-07-03

When there is a non-unique solution to a puzzle, the game only recognizes one of the solutions, e.g. in 7 steps, puzzle 12 the third and fourth step are interchangeable, but only one is recognized as correct.

Nice interesting puzzles, but please make the music stop!

2025-03-03

I like the puzzles but I can’t stand the sounds. Turning them off in settings doesn’t make any difference.

Deliberately obtuse.

2025-04-01

Since the patterns are not the same size as the reference pattern and there are several VERY similar sized pieces it becomes a guessing game as to which one goes where. Yes, it makes it more challenging but needlessly so

Wish it was consistent

2025-04-13

I really like the game but I paid for immortal and unlocking. The upgrades did not show up or work for days and even now it’s not showing for immortal. I paid for unlocked play and now, after spending way too much time trying to figure out how to access the fours (still have no idea) it should just open when a level is completed?!?! Also, now it looks like it’s ready for me to play but when I touch the stencils, they don’t move… very bummed. I’ll need my money back if you cannot fix this fast.

Fun and some challenges

2025-05-15

This is fun but why do we have to scroll through the intro every time we log on? This is dumb. It should recognize we are returning and not new players.

Almost there

2024-08-26

This is fun! But I find the timer and its algorithm/strategy to be annoying most of the time. I think maybe one more game mode in addition to mortal and immortal (maybe puzzle mode?) where I just try to create the shape without timer or accuracy ratings would make this game perfection for me. The timer makes me nervous (although I’m third place on one of the global leaderboards!!!), and it would be more fun imo to just try to recreate the shape. Edit: I see “casual mode” is coming that gets rid of the timer. I think this will make the game perfect! I’m almost done with everything but the challenge levels so really looking forward to playing it all again without the weird scoring rules that really don’t interest me. Thanks for listening to the players. I think this game will be very popular once you implement casual mode. Edit 2: I’ve had an issue a couple times where my solution is identical to the original but not correct. I’ve emailed the devs an fully expect to have a respectful conversation with them. I want to just say this is the best game I’ve played in years. I appreciate SO MUCH the lack of ads and the ability to purchase all the puzzles in one click. I know taste in games is subjective but this one is so freaking close to perfection.

Edit. Dev says they haven’t gotten my email so I sent another. Occasionally I’ve gotten an answer that looks the same to me but doesn’t count as correct. They don’t allow me to send screenshots but I’ve checked in photoshop and can’t see any difference. Still absolutely a fun game that I highly recommend!

Fantastic game!

2024-09-02

I don't usually play a lot of games on my phone, but this one I really enjoy. It is challenging without being frustratingly difficult. I thought I would breeze past all the puzzles and be bored, but nope! I love the colors and the challenge! Thank you for a great game!

Lovely, but the timer is stressful to me.

2025-09-03

This is a beautiful game, and I love puzzles. … but I have never been able to enjoy a game that has a timer. I was very excited about Immortality mode! But the timer is still there! Many games allow you to play in Zen mode; I wish that were available. I’m going to have to stop playing (after only mastering a few beginner levels.) I don’t need more stress in my life! I’m giving you five stars anyway, because it is a lovely, well-implemented puzzle game.

the game of stenciletto

2024-09-20

okay this is one of my favorite things to do (on an ipad)

Features

The game was designed to help him improve his visual perception skills and problem solving abilities, whilst reducing his urge to tap randomly.

Stenciletto is a shapes game based on an IQ test for children created a century ago - reimagined as a fun game.

You need to really study the shapes, rather than just quickly glancing: most mistakes are due to poor visual perception rather than incorrect logical reasoning.

The game works like this: solid and cut-out shapes (stencils) are placed one on top of another to make a pattern.

As the timer doesn't start until you tap a shape, you can take as long as you need to study the the shapes, think, and plan your answer.

The game is navigable using colours and symbols, so is usable by people with limited reading ability.

Many of the stencils in the game are from her original test, with a few new ones added by us.

THINK! Accurate logical reasoning is absolutely vital! Because you can only see a little bit of each stencil in the pattern, you must work out which stencils are in use.

You must match this pattern precisely, starting with the solid shape at the back and finishing with the top shape.

She was an innovative psychologist who developed a range of non-verbal reasoning tests, and demonstrated the many of the verbal IQ tests in use were discriminatory.

The urge to tap a shape can be overpowering, but trial-and-error behavior rarely solves a problem correctly.

The Stencil Design (IQ) Test was developed by Grace Arthur in the 1920s.

Most puzzles are solvable in less than a minute, and there are 15 puzzles in each game.

The shape at the back is always solid - so that’s easy too.
