Wont even open

2022-06-18

I’ve downloaded and filled in my info 4 times now and it still doesnt work. The first time it glitched out and had me refill everything, then EPASmokeSense loaded what Im guessing is the home page and then dissapeared. I tried opening it again and it did the same thing. Deleted EPASmokeSense and repeat fill in, same thing happened, tried one last time and same problem. The worst part is I downloaded EPASmokeSense because my house is currently surrounded by fired in every direction and I wanted to try and map a safe driving route in case we get evacuated. If there was a negative stars option Id choose that! Worst app for an emergency!

Minimizes itself every time I start it

2022-07-19

Rated one star because after I completed their survey, EPASmokeSense will not stay open. I haven’t been able to see anything. We are affected by the horrible 2020 fires in Oregon and this sounded like it would be helpful. Running on a gen 6 iPad.

Garbage

2022-08-20

Just tediously long survey to support someone’s pet research project. I was jut looking for government funded real time reports so the I can avoid lung damage from wildfire smoke. I hope this junk wasn’t funded by my tax dollars.

Data gathering app. Look elsewhere.

2022-09-21

EPASmokeSense is all about data gathering about your personal information. Do not recommend

App crashes

2022-10-22

I was excited to use EPASmokeSense but after filling out the intro survey it crashes each time I try to open it. I am looking forward to using it when this issue is fixed!

Crashes on opening

2022-11-23

EPASmokeSense doesn’t work. It crashes immediately after opening. I’ve deleted and reinstalled it.

Claims that it provides information about air quality tomorrow, but does not

2022-12-24

Understanding what the forecast for the air quality is tomorrow was my primary reason for downloading EPASmokeSense, and it doesn’t appear to do that. So seems like a useless app for me.

Could be more usable

2023-01-25

The mandatory questionnaire is weird, but it’s better than the AIRNow app. Good data, really bad design.

I quickly tapped some random buttons on the questionnaire to get it to disappear. I wouldn’t trust any data gathered by EPASmokeSense for a scientific publication of findings.

Update: how did it get worse?? Do you guys test before releasing? Or just “it builds—ship it!”

Doesn’t work most of the time

2023-02-26

EPASmokeSense is helpful when it works, but it doesn’t work most of the time. It only shows smoke plumes 20% of the time. Right now it is totally frozen and won’t do anything.

Does not work.

2023-03-27

Upon opening EPASmokeSense I am asked to consent to a study that is supposed to be voluntary but you don't get an option to opt out. I agreed and filled out the survey. Then EPASmokeSense crashes. Try opening again and it continues to crash. Same thing over and over. Don't download EPASmokeSense . Waste of time.

Constantly crashes

2023-04-28

Have been attempting to use his app for a few days and it takes nearly 2 minutes to load then crashes shortly after opening. I was really looking forward to using this tool as I have been dealing with severe smoke conditions from the Camp Fire and was hoping to utilize EPASmokeSense to find safe places to escape out of the smoke.

Wouldn’t stop crashing

2023-05-29

Filled in all my info, immediately crashed. Reopened EPASmokeSense . Crashed again. Deleted, redownloaded, reentered my info. Crashed. Reopened. Crashed. Reopened. Crashed. Deleted and do not plan to download again unless they fix it. I couldn’t access any information, because after being open for half a second it crashes. Useless.

Prescribed Fire edition needed

2023-06-30

We need more prescribed fire to reduce the occurrence of wildfires. Another addition of EPASmokeSense for prescribed fire would be very useful. Locations with national parks/fire dependent eco-regions that routinely use controlled fires would benefit from an app that provides alerts and preparatory information.

Asks you to review week on a Monday

2023-07-31

I was into the second or third screen before I realized I had been asked to report on days that hadn't happened yet.

Then you can't get out of the questionnaire.

Can’t use it without being in research study?

2023-09-01

I don’t know if it’s a good app or not because it wouldn’t allow me to access anything without giving my own personal information to become part of their research study. At last not as far as I could tell. Delete.

Clunky

2023-10-03

Super hard on the iPhone 8. Slows everything down. Only way to restore the phone is to manually close EPASmokeSense . Kinda cool when it works but often crashes and slooooow.

Great While it Worked

2023-11-03

I was really glad to Find EPASmokeSense as it allowed me to monitor the air-quality here in the Coachella Valley on a daily basis. It was great for about three weeks but it has now just stopped working altogether. Keeps telling me I need to add ZIP Code to my profile (which I had already done) and when it tries to access the profile page EPASmokeSense then just shuts down. Been like that for days on end now. Tried deleting it and re-downloading it-got exactly the same result.

Bug fixed

2023-12-05

A previous reviewer reported crashes after loading. Works fine for me!

Great info!!!

2024-01-05

In the last few weeks we've had a few fires near us and each time I've been able to use EPASmokeSense to help guide my family's outdoor activitie choices. The map feature is the best!

Wonderful!

2024-02-06

My boyfriend works for the company that made EPASmokeSense on behalf of the EPA.
It has been an invaluable tool for monitoring our air quality during the Sonoma and Napa fires. It helped us determine where we should go to find cleaner air to help with asthma and pets. A big thank you to the EPA and to Sonoma Technology Inc!
