Tempi Overview

What is Tempi?

Tempi is a music app that measures the tempo of your performance in real-time and allows you to analyze it later. It is like a reverse metronome that listens to you and your band while you play and reports the BPM of your performance with remarkable accuracy. You can use it for individual practice or in a band setting to pinpoint problem areas in a piece of music that you're learning.

Product Details and Description of

this app measures you and your entire band’s tempo live, while you play, and lets you analyze the performance when you’re done. It's like a reverse metronome. * this app listens while you (or your entire band) play. * this app reports the BPM (beats per minute) of your performance in real time with remarkable accuracy. * When you’re done, this app lets you analyze the recording so that problem areas can be pinpointed and improved. * Use Tap for Tempo to quickly get a BPM reading at any time. * Switch themes for easy nighttime use or just to suit your style. * Export the audio recording of your performance to keep or share with others. HOW TO USE In a band setting, place the iPhone or iPad in a position where the entire band can see it so everyone will know when the band is speeding up or slowing down. When you’re done playing the song, press the stop button to analyze the performance. You can scroll through the entire song, isolate where the tempo sped up or slowed down, and play back the song to get an idea of what went wrong. this app is great for individual practice too. Use it instead of a metronome while practicing to pinpoint problem areas in a piece of music that you’re learning. If you can play through an entire song with the tempo only changing by 1 or 2 BPMs, you’ve arrived :-) this app works best when there’s a distinct “pulse” to the song, like a kick drum/snare or a repeating chord, and assumes the player is trying to play at a consistent tempo. With less structured music it still does quite well but may occasionally report incorrect tempos. If your song is very fast or very slow, tap the button at the top right to toggle between 1/2x, 1x, and 2x tempos.

Tempi Beat Detector

Very nice product. I play guitar without a drummer (fingerpick and strum mostly) and it seems to be pretty accurate. As I tend to speed up during a performance, I suggest adding a visual bar across the screen that changes color if I slow down or speed up outside of a predetermined BPM. For example, if it is red I need to speed up, if green I am within an acceptable range of BPM, and if blue I need to slow down. That would be much easier and quicker to interpret if using at practice or on stage. I did suggest this as an improvement through the app's "Contact Us" link. If you like the idea, please let them know.

Worked Great

Only used this once so far, but plan to keep it as part of my gig setup. Today was an acoustic gig with me on cajon. this app did a great job of reading our live tempo. We tend to rush a bit we get louder so it was good to see that feedback so I could work on keeping the band on pace. Don’t try to over correct too quickly, that will just sound bad. Love the app. Sound quality wasn’t great but it was right by me and not my top need. Also would love to have access to the tempo chart you see live when save a song/performance.

Every Drummer should have this.

I use this live every night to make sure my tempos are right to match up with any sequenced phrases that I use during the night. Also, if anyone in the band says “you’re playing too fast” or “too slow” I can check to make sure my tempo is the same as it was the night before and the night before that. If this were a standalone piece of hardware, with a count off feature, every drummer would buy it.
