News sources don’t update

LearnJapanese currently does not work properly. Many of the news sources haven’t been updated in 7 days or more, and some just display an error and won’t load anything. If money is being charged for a service, it needs to be properly maintained. I love LearnJapanese and would love to give it 5 stars because it really is that good, but I just can’t do that in its current state. Fix LearnJapanese ASAP.

Good App but WAY TOO GLITCHY

While I love the functionality of LearnJapanese and would definitely like to support the author, it’s just way to glitchy and buggy. It cannot handle moderate long text without lags and/or glitches.

Edit: Reduced to 1 star… WAY TOO MANY BUGS. I was planning to only use the dictionary to add card to AnkiMobile… Even that doesn’t work either.. Each time you click the dictionary search bar and LearnJapanese glitches out and get rid of the cursor…

Flawed subscription and account system

LearnJapanese itself works quite well. Occasionally crashes when you’re reading a long imported text, but when it works it works.

That said, I haven’t been able to login to my account due to some errors, and after 4 months of attempting to contact the creator for support I still haven't gotten an answer. It’s difficult to recommend the subscription in its current state.

Not perfect

LearnJapanese seems good so far but its not anything promising. So far, it fails to correctly recognize the meaning of words. Example, when あき is used as a noun it means fall, so why does it keep bringing up a verb?

Second, it separates kana that are MEANT to be together. Example, 喫茶店 (きっさてん) is all together, it should not be separating the word like this —> きっ/さ/てん. And the last syllable will be put with the particle that comes after it making it seem like a word

Buggy - used to be great

A fantastic app for reading and learning to read in Japanese. Seamlessly keeps track of vocab and gives access to many articles. However LearnJapanese is currently very glitches and quits every few minutes - if this is fixed, it would be a sure 5-star app.

Nice App. Poor customer service

LearnJapanese works well and easy to use. Best feature is the ability to use the Manabi flash cards to learn new words. However customer service has been poor. Forgot my password and was unable to reset password on LearnJapanese due to “server error.” No response after contacting developer on Twitter.

Crashes after new update

I really like your app, but it crashed after new update (December 2). I cannot even run it. When I tap on it, I see a logo for a second, and my screen dims a little... and that’s it. I have iPhone X, iOS 13.2.3

The app cover is off

In the cover of LearnJapanese it doesn’t say it has in app purchases it does, there are subscriptions but you don’t have to use them. LearnJapanese from what I see is pretty good if you want to read Japanese stuff it does that, it also has videos you can watch on the folktales I read.

Love the variety and lookup

Mana I is an interface to several Japanese websites with various styles of reading. The two things I like best are the variety of readings, both level and topic and the integrated dictionary. The only thing I noticed that I’m not so sure about is that when you go to NHK Easy, it has pictures (and sound) that are missing when you go through Manabi.

素晴らしいアプリ!

I’ve been using LearnJapanese to practice my reading skills and it’s simple yet has done wonders for me. I find the kanji tracking feature very convenient as it helps me to see where I stand in terms of literacy. The subscription price is more than fair, other reading apps have such ridiculous prices for so little features, so I appreciate you keeping this one reasonable. What I would like is more distinction between known and unknown words, it gets tiring having to click every word to make sure I marked them as known. Keeping them highlighted could work. A vertical text option would be fun to add too and if it’s possible, could you perhaps add sign-in from Apple and/or Google?

Great app. But no way to contact support? Won’t recognize my paid subscription

There’s a lot of great content, and I love that I can keep track of kanji read/learned. The accompanying flash card app is really fun to use, and makes it so convenient. I got this over Satori.

I bought a subscription, but LearnJapanese suddenly won’t recognize it. It logged me out and then won’t log me back in. I don’t have Facebook or Twitter — and can’t find any email to reach out to for support!

Helpful Practice Tool

My biggest wish would be to incorporate a dark theme in the main menu. I do most of my reading at night, and the white screen is annoying.

I haven't looked at every site yet, but I appreciate how many are included. The range of difficulties seems nice as well. I haven't done much searching for it yet, but it would be nice to be able to add our own sites and blogs... Maybe that's already possible, and I need to actually find out how.

Great app, but

Since the most recent update, it crashes on launch. I can only get the flash card half of LearnJapanese to open :/ when it did work, I really enjoyed having the option of so many different things to read and having them ranked by difficulty. Very helpful study tool!

3.0 update is excellent

Anki integration is a huge game changer and is what brought me over from the reader app I had been using previously.
I just tested adding an Anki card and everything worked smoothly and intuitively— it’s a really big deal that I can finally one-tap add cards to Anki from my smartphone, since no other reader app on the iOS store does this to my knowledge. I’m glad the price is so reasonable, too— will definitely be recommending to friends!

My one request to the developer: Is it possible to add a “hiragana only” option for adding to a field in Anki? For example, say I want to add the phrase 仮眠をとる to my anki deck. The only options right now are expression (仮眠をとる) and expression with reading (仮か眠みんをとる). It’d be nice to have an option for かみんをとる because of the odd way my Anki card template is set up. Just a little nitpick. Congrats and many thanks for getting 3.0 released!

Great App

A very helpful app but I wish the font was more standard and legible, or at least offer an option to change the font. I feel like the current font makes it more difficult to read for people still new to Japanese.

Edit: very quick response from developers and it seems already updated and much more legible. Fantastic app with great support.

Absolutely recommend!

Using Manabi Reader lets me read way more efficiently and I’m seeing a huge improvement in the Japanese I’m picking up, + I’m learning faster than my classmates because of it. It’s free/cheap, easily usable, the cross compatibility between Manabi Reader and Manabi Flashcards/Anki is great, the dev is actively updating it, etc. I like to use it to read NHK’s easy news and make flashcards from new words. Definitely check it out!

Love this app

Im trying to use everyday! It has a more advanced selection than other apps like it. The customer support is nice and attentive. Only thing that could make LearnJapanese better is native readers. So that you can listen to all your book marks while driving. It will help with listening comprehension ( my worst skill) and tone while speaking. Other apps have this but not for advanced material. Even if they were slow at implementing this, I would pay for it.

Amazing really

Wow LearnJapanese is a game changer. Thank you so much developers! Kind of surprised this isn't ridiculously popular. I'm reading books and checking the news on it constantly and love the progress tracking AND the flash card program (while slightly less customizable than I'd like) really all double down on this method. You only need this program theoretically to get to fluent comprehension. Although of course you're going to want to mix things up. Love it and thanks again.

Incredibly useful app with a thoughtful creator who is open to feedback

I have been using Manabi Reader to help me immerse in Japanese, and no other app does quite what Manabi Reader does. On top of that, the creator openly accepts feedback on his discord, and is quick to implement user ideas. Many of us have reported bugs or nice to haves, only for the creator to fix or implement the ideas within a day or two. Definitely give it a try, and if anything isn’t quite to your liking, join the discord and leave some feedback!

Exactly what I needed without realizing it!

If you’re an immersion learner, this is a must use for the reading portion. A “killer app” as one might refer to into in like 2007 or something. It’s often recommended to use the SRS in addition to simple sources such as NHK Easy, as well as sentence-mining, which are all built into the Manabi framework. If you’re like me, you put off reading because it feels more daunting than just sitting and watching. If you’re struggling with that like I was, LearnJapanese is a no-brainer. What’s more, I imagine it maintaining it’s usefulness through to fluency and beyond.
