Great idea, not so good app

I am new here and I truly believe in the possibility of change. I am eager to start the plan but I can see some of the limitations already in my trial week. First, it seems there are bugs tu fix. Every time I pull up one of the training videos, I get stuck and I have not been able to pass from the 5th. This defeats the purpose of organizing my day around my 10-15 available for this. Second, I tried to watch the meditations and they would not open. Third, when I open the community, is hard to follow the thread of the conversations in the journals, not sure yet how to follow and in which order, I guess is not intuitive. Many of the reviews are >2 years and I am not sure if EatRightNow was updated and in that process it became slower/developed glitches or who knows… I read the book and this is a great opportunity at a low cost that’s is easily accessible everyone, including those who have health care barriers, but EatRightNow needs much improvement for it to continue working, and sadly, I am not sure if I would purchase the subscription because it already feels frustrating.

A Big Blind Spot

This program seems deeply researched and well organized. I came to it ready to fully participate but I’m put off by the persistent use of the word “unhealthy” to describe habits and food, particularly sweet food. For a program that’s all about mindfulness — essentially, paying close attention in a nonjudgmental way — this is a tremendous blind spot, subtly encouraging users to constantly judge themselves. This is distracting and disheartening. There’s just too much right and wrong/good and bad built into EatRightNow for it to feel truly welcoming, especially for people who’ve worked to recover from eating disorders. I’d recommend doing some research into recent science and scholarship about eating disorders, food justice, intuitive eating, and the ways that diet culture is frequently repackaged as “wellness.” This program would work so much better with an upgrade to remove the judgmental stance.

Good app, some features need work

The principles laid out in this program are clear and helpful. EatRightNow has tools to help you ride out your cravings, while teaching you why your brain behaves the way it does. Overall, I think it’s well worth the time and money spent.

However, the journaling and community features need a bit of work. This portion is set up like an old school online forum & is a bit difficult to navigate. Also, there’s no option for private journaling. Your journal is made available for the community. I think there should be a private journaling feature and a separate community feature. Both should be more user friendly. A new user should be able to hop in and post to the community without having to research or spend time reading about how to interact with the community.

Language

EatRightNow is a powerful tool if you practice the exercises offered. As a meditator for a long time and someone who recovered from an eating disorder many years ago I was curious to explore EatRightNow. My one point of feedback is that Judd uses the term “unhealthy” food a lot in the lessons but some people don’t struggle with eating tons of junk food they just eat food impulsively or unconsciously to soothe emotions. I would suggest that the word “unhealthy” is an unnecessary judgement. All food is just food. All food simply has more or less energy and nutrients. Placing a judgment on a food as “unhealthy” can set up internal judgement about being a good or bad person for eating “healthy” or “unhealthy” food. It is important to know that sugar is addictive but that doesn’t make it inherently “unhealthy” it is just fuel. My understanding is that the whole point of mindfulness is to bring awareness without judgement. To me it seems labeling things “healthy” or “unhealthy” is in direct opposition to the core principles of mindfulness.
Again I think EatRightNow is a wonderful tool. Just don’t get caught in the trap of judging yourself if you eat something “unhealthy”

Becoming mindful

In this last Week I have begun to notice more of my habit loops and where I am letting my body sensations dictate my actions. Instead it will be more helpful and healthy to recognize the body sensation, accept that it is happening as then become curious about it. Noting any feelings I am having at the time. Once I slowed down to take these simple steps I begin to understand more that I have been just mindlessly eating out of habit or boredom or stress etc. being involved with EatRightNow and the community of real people I am slowing and taking note of this happening. After this first week I have begun to enjoy my meals, eat smaller portions because I eat slower, I feel full before I’ve eaten the whole meal. Before this experience this week I would eat one helping and then go back for more. I even used the exercises in EatRightNow to eat only 3 salt & pepper wings, 1/2 cup of fried rice and one egg roll at a lunch with co workers. Before having the tools I have now I always had triple that because the food is so great tasting and probably full of MSG. I was full after the three. This program like any other will give you back what you put in. I highly recommend it!

Makes very tough subjects very accessible - and it works

I’ve been practicing forms of mindfulness for years and yet have not been successful in applying it to my relationship with food on my own. This research-based app connected all the dots and helped me connect to very simple and powerful strategies to reprogram my brain when facing hunger and food.

It’s a very well designed app and if you use it every day as intended it will support you in making a powerful shift. The online community is real. People there will support you too and that’s really helpful. Most helpful is that it’s not a diet but a lifestyle change that will produce results in your diet and body image. Cudos to Dr Jud and his team for doing it right.

Outstanding Value

I have worked on losing weight with mindful eating approach for years but have always gotten tripped up with cravings.... and put on weight. I have always wanted peace around food and this is the first time I’ve experienced such calm and sanity in making healthy choices and eating appropriate portions. It’s been one month and my clothes are getting looser and I am not struggling. There is so much interactive support and amazingly, you have access to medical professionals (including program creator) online and in weekly group sessions- for the price of a subscription!
Flexible approach that takes advantage of technology to make it easy for you. If you are someone who struggles, this will help you.

Mindfulness is crucial

Of all the things I have done to understand these issues, I never could have guessed an app-based therapy program would have been the thing to make the difference.

It has not been a quick fix, but one that, slowly and deeply absorbed, has been the most effective way to move forward to a better, more healthy relationship with food - which means a better relationship with all things - that I never thought I could find.

I highly recommend it. Have patience. Don’t be afraid to just make the lessons a daily practice and do them over and over again until you feel them in your bones. Until the techniques become a natural response.

Eat Right Now is Great

I joined the program Eat Right Now (ERN) last January. It isn’t a diet program per se. Instead it teaches us how and why we eat and gives us mechanisms for coping so you don’t eat a whole bag of Cheetos. Since last January I have followed these lessons. Each has four parts or so and only lasts 10 minutes max. EatRightNow works for the initial 6 weeks and then you can continue. You do pay for it but for me at least it has gotten cheaper as I went on. With it and EatRightNow Lose It where I write what I eat I have lost 55 lbs. You can google Eat Right Now and The NY Times to read about it.

I hardly ever write reviews. But I tell my friends about this program on Facebook.

Yo Yo dieter

I have been a yo yo dieter since 2nd grade when my mom first took me to a Weight Watchers meeting with her. I am now 61 years old and after enduring the craziness of the Corona virus find my second 25 lbs heavier then when it started. I daily beat up on myself.I recently started a mindfulness meditation zoom class and became aware of this habit of creating suffering for myself around my weight since I was a child. The leader of the group recommended EatRightNow for me to try. I just finished week one and I’m feeling hopeful. Somewhere in the back of my mind I realized what I was doing around sugar but had no tools to look at it and walk through it. EatRightNow is a gift in my life! I would highly recommend it to anyone who is addicted to sugar.

Listening to your own wisdom

Once I understood that the mind has its own habit loops, these loops or some of them, certainly, came out in the open to me, where I can see them and recognize them for what they are —just habits. Habit loops are not just eating desires, but are also worry loops, nail biting loops, etc. what’s interesting is discovering which habits my body is signaling as I go through my day. Because I think about food a lot, I ask myself a lot, am I really hungry, or am I feeling something else? I’m glad this program has me going for Curiosity. Curiosity makes me discover something new about myself, enjoy myself, and to naturally connect with others.
I’ve enjoyed the comfortable company of Dr Brewer. Easy manner makes self acceptance easy, which makes going onward doable.
Thanks for the discovery and enjoyment I get from my own wisdom!

Excellent, thorough, supportive, science-based

Eat Right Now is a well-designed app with good tech support. It covers the science of compulsive/overeating, and applies the best of both science and mindfulness training to help change eating habits. There is a basic 28-day program, which many do more than once, followed by theme week options. The daily lessons are brief, direct, and often funny! There are many resources like meditations and reviews to support the daily lessons. The online community for users is truly supportive. Each week, EatRightNow developer, Dr. Judson Brewer, hosts an online support session. There’s even a second weekly session for users in Southern Hemisphere hosted by a strong app community facilitator. This is not a quick fix; there is NO quick fix. This requires participation but is really worth the effort and the cost of EatRightNow .

Wow!

I can’t believe how effective this program is. Judd clearly understands the basis of unhealthy habits and has created a comprehensive tool backed by science to help guide you toward self-realization and control over the deeply ingrained habits that can rule your life. When I tell you I’ve done it all- I mean it- I am a professional yo-yo dieter. I even tried semiglutide- before realizing that I was just substituting one set of disordered eating habits for yet another- possibly risking my future health while doing so. This is not another diet- in fact there’s no restriction or tracking contained in the program. It is like having a psych coach in your back pocket. One week down and I’m feeling better than ever. At first it may seem like there’s a lot to unpack- if it were a book you might want to skip to the end to see “where the diet is” but the beauty there is there’s no diet! Just follow each day, use all the tools, and you’ll see for yourself. Judd also has a book- I read that first and then decided to get EatRightNow . I’m glad I did. Trust me when I say this is not another trend.

Science-based, easy to understand, fun essential program for controlling stress/related eating

I am a physician and have eaten to relieve stress for almost 50 years. I’ve read extensively throughout the years about stress-related eating and how to curb it. The information I learned in the E.R.N. program was the first time that I really found answers to what initiated this habit, why it continues and how I can break it. I’m not yet through with the program and I’ve already learned so much and have a much better and relaxed relationship with eating. The lessons I’ve learned can be effectively applied to any unhealthy or unwanted habit. I recommend this program enthusiastically. I believe in it so much that I’ve offered to gift a 6-month subscription to this program or one of the other two programs by Dr. Brewer to all my nieces and nephews and assorted other friends and family members.

Incredible resource ! I’m blown away by how comprehensive it is.

I have been studying the psychology of eating and I am also studying mindfulness and various meditation practices. I have never encountered a tool or ap that is like this one . This program literally holds your hand through the process of evaluating your own patterns around your relationship with food. I have only completed the first week and I feel like I am finally understanding my behaviors. I am so excited to keep going. I first heard about the ap when I was listening to , “The Rich Roll Podcast. Dr Brewer explained that since most people are unable to come to see him in his practice, he wanted to develop a tool that brought his practice to the people. Well he has done just that! And the practices are all evidence based. Thank you so much Dr. Brewer. You are easing the way for so many people :)

Eat Right Now is life changing!

Eat Right Now is a mindfulness program that guides you through changing habits you are stuck doing but no longer find helpful.

To get you through your cravings, it provides tools to understand what your habits are, and what you are feeling and doing. Why are you mindlessly putting that cookie in your mouth? Is it hunger? Stress? Anger? If you choose not to succumb to that craving, how long before the craving passes? Is it endless as you fear or something hat passes quickly? Once you get a better understanding of your habits, you learn to make broader, thoughtful behavioral changes.

Inherent in all this is how to use loving kindness on yourself and others. If you go ahead and eat that cookie and five more (I’m thinking Oreos here), eat them mindfully, taste their delicious deliciousness, but assess how you feel while you are eating them and afterward. Too full? On the fifth one, did you go into sugar overload? You then use this understanding the next time you get mad at someone and find your hand in the cookie jar to help sooth yourself.

My description here isn’t really doing the program justice. It does do all of these feel good things using evidenced based, concrete tools to help you change your life.

At least give it a try for the first month. It’s worth it.

Unparalleled

A game changing application. Applies in many different ways but is an exceptional tool to change some very engrained habits with eating. Made it through all the holidays and dropped some significant weight. (20#) This change I believe, by how it is done, is sustainable with very little effort. It just takes paying attention and the willingness to try to do that. Sounds too good to be true but I’m living proof that it is true, and effective. The developers are available, approachable, incredibly educated about this and continually working toward improvement. Best of all its obvious that this is all being done by them for the right reasons. Not a self serving bunch in the least. They are truly caring and dedicated. The community is a collection of likeminded individuals, also exceptionally generous with time and support — it all works perfectly together. Great job by all! (This is first app I’ve ever bothered to review— because I believe so strongly in it)

One month review

Wow! I loved the one month summary and realized that I probably need to review all of it again. I am rereading The Craving Mind again and realize that I have moments of grasping all of this and then I lose it. I really need to strengthen my stress compass and to appreciate mindfulness. Over the years I have had brief periods where I would meditate yet I still have a general reaction like Dr. Brewer’s on page 134: “Who would want to pay attention to a seemingly uninteresting, unexciting object like the breath when my mind was full of all sorts of better things...”. I like the loving kindness meditation much better. The noting and awareness without judgment is a challenge and I need much more practice with this. EatRightNow feels personal and it keeps me connected. I appreciated the reminder when I had missed. few days. My daughter was visiting and I also needed a break. It felt like you noticed and cared even though it was probably automated. Interestingly I have not lost weight but I have not had any unplanned sweets which was my goal. I feel confident and will keep on truckin. Thank you.

I am learning about MY body

I can’t believe but I am actually figuring out how MY mind works and how it’s tied to my body. Not only in regards to food but throughout my life!! I can relate to the examples throughout the program when I thought I was the only one who would starve oneself all day and then make bad choices from 5:30-10:30. It was affecting my sleep and then I would punish my self the next day by repeating the loop. It was not working and I would just continue as I didn’t know any better! I was mean to myself and continue the punishment. This program has taught me true self love and understanding how my mind and body are connected. I have lost weight but not by counting calories, not starving myself, not restricting myself to only eating certain foods. I have lost the weight by implementing mindful habits not only when I’m eating but throughout the day. Most important being kind to myself! thank you so much! Now 55 and I have been on this roller coaster for my entire life and now I feel free and empowered. Thank you again.

Great approach to weight loss

I’m on day 21 of using EatRightNow . The free trial period is long enough to decide if you want to continue with the paid version. You should know that it’s really just a 28 day program that you repeat over and over until you change your habits. And Dr Brewer says that people probably need to repeat the same 28 day program for 6 months before your habits will have changed. And Dr Brewer does not recommend trying to lose weight in the beginning months.
One downside of the program is that it mainly focuses on cravings as the reason you are overweight. If you do not have cravings, you may be frustrated watching Dr Brewer talk about cravings every day.
