white writers?

I’m guessing the writers are all white and they didn’t consult people of color at all while writing them, because Asian people have last names... as their first names? Someone’s called “chang chang” which doesn’t even make sense in Mandarin. If you nickname someone, you do it by their first name. Chang is a last name. It’s basically the equivalent of the racist phrase of “ching chong” or how J.K. Rowling named her Asian character “Cho Chang” (which again, makes no sense in any Asian language). It would literally take a 1 minute conversation with anyone Chinese to figure this out. Also, every time someone is Asian, the writers point out their “Asiatic” features and how Asian they are/their language is unintelligible blabbering, compared to the perfectly translated or written forms of French. You use Asian characters but don’t want to make any effort into displaying the language and mentioning anything past how Asian we look - while putting in more effort into your white characters and languages? And also you compare our country’s severe drug addiction caused by the British and minimize it into something that a cup of hot chocolate can solve.

The one black hero in “Heroes Were Lost” turns into a bloodthirsty monster halfway through (which plays into another racist stereotype of making black people the violent ones or the criminals). Harriet Tubman is also the only character that gets excited about killing people in “Souls Were Eaten”. Y’all white writers need to be aware of your stereotypes and racism when writing this stuff about us POC. This is just sad.

You can’t reread past lines

In my opinion this is a huge fundamental flaw with this game. I feel like for a story based game, being able to actually, you know, read the story in full as you’ve progressed so far. If this was a paper book in front of you, it’s like every time you finish a page it burns up and you can never read that page again. Except in the case of this game instead of even every page it’s nearly every sentence. This is a huge problem for maintaining continuity and context who pick this game up for short sessions over time. And I get it, you guys probably did it to get people to want to keep playing for long periods of time, and therefore spend money to keep being able to make decisions and progress the story.

But the way it’s set up now it’s hostile to the free players. It’s also inaccessible. For people who have cognitive issues or other neurodivergences and can’t always recall or maintain the focus needed to make the choices they wanted to without having all the rest of the story available to them, it’s nearly unplayable.

I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to create a setting that players can toggle on or off to able to read the story thus far, come on, you can do it

And Then There Were Ads

Don’t get me wrong I fully understand and support the use of ads so developers can make money. In fact, I appreciate the option to watch ads to earn tickets to progress in the story. However, there’s an ad after almost 2-3 clicks. I thought purchasing the 100 tickets would stop but I still get the frequent ads which is annoying because I can’t get I got the feel of the story. I want to give it a higher rating bc the atmosphere and story are so good! The fact that Moti can appear on my Apple Watch is so immersive and makes me really feel a part of the adventure. I suggest they either choose a better time to show the ads (ie in between arcs or during slow moments of the story) or give an option to pay for no ads (which I will gladly do!!). I sincerely hope they take this into consideration bc I love everything about this game except for the ads 🥲

Super Amazing

I recently got the game a few months back and I’m on the first story! I really love it so far and my favorite characters are probably Moti, MC, Sharon, and Etienne. My only issue is that there are a lot of ads which can get annoying when you’re at a really good part in the story. I’m about halfway through and the sun went out, and I love how the choices affect different timelines as well as meeting new people or going to new places. In another play I did on my phone, I didn’t even meet Etienne at first. So I’m super happy I got it on my iPad and played it again to see him, overall I do love it just tone it down on the ads or make it like one dollar to get rid of them.

Awesome app! Well written stories!

This is one of the first reviews I have written for an app, which should tell you how great I think it is. The story is so intriguing (I am currently reading ‘and the sun went out!) and the characters are so interesting. They are all brought to life in their own personal and unique ways.
The simple interface is something I prefer, it is very similar to reading a classic book, rather than the way most CYOA games are formatted now. You never have to pay for certain choices which is very much appreciated, because that can ruin the story sometimes. ChoicesThatMatter is very generous with providing free tickets, and because of this I would easily consider purchasing tickets or a story pass to support ChoicesThatMatter .

Good job!

Stellar

I just finished the story of the Sun going out, and I have to say I teared up a bit at the ending. I’m aware that everyone will have very different experiences pending on their choices, but I throughly enjoyed every choice I took and resisted looking up any walkthroughs or the like, and I suggest anyone who wants to give this a shot to do the same.

The storytelling is absolutely brilliant. I’m a casual writer myself and the twists and turns this story takes you on was enjoyable from the beginning to the end. I absolutely loved it, and I actually really enjoyed the simple interface. I didn’t need to see anyone’s images or faces or scenery because the writing was so good it was unnecessary!

This is MUCH MUCH BETTER than any of the many Choices apps you’ll see, PLEASE give this a shot.

Amazing!!

I don’t normally leave reviews, but this game deserves it. Out of the three options, And The Sun Went Out is the best.
One thing that I love is how there is romance / no romance options and a pick between two- your gender and name is never mentioned, which I find nice too.
Replaying ATSWO for a second time and I’m getting stuff I didn’t even know happened! I’m definitely going to be replaying all games in a different path. One of my favorite things is how the game, at the end of each arc, tells you what’s happening and a percent of people on that path- once, I got on a path of 1% of players!
All in all, I HIGHLY suggest playing this! I don’t buy tickets so it can take awhile to complete, but it’s 100% worth it!!

Awesome

I just finished as much as I could of “And their souls were eaten” (until the next update) and it was really good. I read through some of the ratings and noticed something. People were having trouble with the apple watch feature, but i think there’s a misunderstanding. Firstly, you have to press the settings icon, click the button labeled settings, and turn apple watch feature on. Secondly, the apple watch feature (for the story i did) only showed certain characters diolouge, not the whole story. I don’t love this, but I do think there should be an explanation within ChoicesThatMatter so people aren’t confused. unless you do these steps, the apple watch app doesn’t work and just shows ChoicesThatMatter icon.

An incredible app, with magnificently well-written stories!

When I first downloaded ChoicesThatMatter , I had been let down my so many others that my expectations were set low. I started with “And Their Souls Were Eaten,” and had my expectations blown entirely out of the water. The stories are immersive, well-written, and allow you choices that actually impact the story without bringing about death and destruction to your party. The characters are lovely, usually all charming in their own right whilst being entirely different people. My favorite part about, at least, “And Their Souls Were Eaten,” is the lack of defining characteristics that the main character is given. You are free to be whatever you’d like in the story, without gender labels—a feature most apps usually miss the mark on.

Heart-wrenching in the most amazing way

I hardly ever leave a review if I’m not getting anything in return (not nice, I know), but I just had to say something about this game. Choices That Matter drew me in right off the bat with its first story, “And The Sun Went Out.” I’ve spent so many nights literally losing sleep over this game, it’s crazy. I could not put my phone down. Personally, I quickly formed an emotional attachment to the characters, and found myself taking way too long to make certain decisions throughout the story. Despite the fact that I am extremely satisfied with the ending I got, I wouldn’t mind playing this story over and over to see more possible endings. This is truly an amazing game, and I absolutely cannot wait to read the other two. Thank you so much.

Overall very good

1st story: I really like the Sun story. Pulled me in, and really liked the interaction between Moti and the main character. The ending I got I would consider very good. For a moment I thought it was not going to be good but I was able to turn it around. I will replay this story.

2nd story: it took a little bit to get hooked, but once I had a clear vision of the imagery, I was hooked! This was very interesting and honestly, someone should make a short movie about this. Out of the three, this story made me feel like every choice I made actually mattered. I think the ending I got was the most realistic ending.

3rd story: I liked the premise, and I was hooked instantly. The story dragged as I got into the middle, and found myself skipping through a lot of dialogue. Some of the choices in the middle seemed redundant or it would ask me to make a choice on events that didn’t seem impactful. I want to play it again and see if I get a better ending.
Edit: just finished my 2nd play through of the 3rd story. It really takes you for a ride. And what makes this one stand out is that it takes you on a wildly different journey than the first playthrough. I think I got a good ending but it ended so abruptly! I will play again and see if I can save all of camp amnesia.

Seriously amazing in every way possible im crying

Just finished my first story and im genuinely crying rn i haven’t even been playing that long but i feel like ive been living in that world forever it was just so well done and thorough and nuanced and so beautiful 😭😭😭 i was NOT expecting it to hit that hard. Mild spoilers maybe??? But the “Am I asleep?” And the “Of course!” Immediately just made me pause and cry a good minute. Truly every choice and detail matters and absolutely nothing is insignificant. I love finding incredibly niche games with this amount of effort put into it, it’s art. Im definitely going to continue playing this. It’s crazy that its free. Pro tip for anyone reading if you dont wanna do the 90 cents just take 10 tickets every day til u get 30 or 40 cuz itll get you through the arc USUALLY and its good for pacing ❤️ I LOVE THIS OMFGGGG i could rant all day and night. Moti 😭Thank yalll

And Five Stars Were Given

I started playing “And The Sun Went Out” and I was absolutely ensnared by the captivating story! This game is absolutely fantastic! Never have I encountered a choices based game that was as friendly and reasonable as this one! ChoicesThatMatter never forces a negative outcome that I didn’t outright cause, like other similar games that punish you for being curious and making choices freely. ChoicesThatMatter builds a wonderful narrative and does not give all the information you want to know right away, I was left wondering who exactly my character was until I explored further in-game. I also extremely enjoy the ticket/choices function where you can wait for tickets or watch 15-30second ads for 3. This is a fantastic system and I can guarantee that I helped the developer’s ad revenue increase significantly! Overall, this is a wonderful app and I can’t wait to finish the first story and start the others!

Best CYOA Ever

(After having only played And The Sun Went Out)
The story is the most incredible I’ve ever seen from a choice-based game. Even without actually having people talking, the background music and Moti’s little chirps (and a few sound effects like breaking glass) make the game alive. The choice tickets system not only works but makes sense as well, but I wouldn’t recommend buying 100 tickets because 100 doesn’t do jack. I’m glad the “watch ads to get tickets” thing works because there’s so many apps out there where the watch ads option is broken or there’s some heinously long or convoluted system to get tickets. You can get through the entire thing for free (unlike other choice-based games) but I highly recommend getting the story pass because it saves time, binge-reading, and the creators totally deserve it for making such an amazing game!

I have one question, though...

“You and 11% of players managed to (succeed)” what the heck happened to the other 89%??!!

After And Their Souls Were Eaten: Didn’t like this story as much. Really short, and there are two occasions where you literally do not have a choice — do I surrender, or do I surrender? Do I roar a challenge, or do I roar a challenge? The ending also seems really abrupt and kinda confusing, because there are a lot of pronouns and a lot happened backstage. Also there was a lot of buildup for Miss Fairy (name excluded for spoiler) and then defeating her felt deflated and too short. Didn’t care for much of the characters either and found them forgettable. It was a good story though, well written up until the end.

My favorite CYOA game

ChoicesThatMatter is just perfect. It encompasses 3 stories right now. I read “and their heroes were lost” first before going back to “and the sun went out.” I love how you get so many choices. Sometimes, you don’t have the information to make an educated choice, and I love that because it’s how the situation would actually be in you were there. The writers really carve out a realistic and believable world for the stories. The music is suspenseful and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I also loved the fact that you can watch a ton of ads to get 3 tickets which is very generous. Although some may say the interface isn’t developed enough as other episodic games, I actually love the simple interface more. It lets you concentrate on the story, the plot, and your imagination rather than cementing how people or situations look. I like a little imaginative space.
Nothing but rave compliments for ChoicesThatMatter!! Definitely buy if you love CYOA games!

Such an amazing game, high recommendations

The titles can literally give me a quick idea as they are meant to do so in every other book. Like the first one, I thought the sun gonna be exploding and that earth would have to evacuate on a spaceship. And for real, I thought the stories were connected to each other. But so far, one of the best interactive storytelling games out there and as far as I can see, I like to imagine and perceive the game as a way to tell Karma, as for each choice will unlock the next path to something and decide what the said religious aspect has in store for us, good or bad. I’m in awe of this game for making me think of this, keep the scaffolding up with this game; don’t let it be forgotten , and if it will be in the near future, it is okay to be sad about it, but be happy that it has happened, for something small can have a huge effect on the world. Thank you, and you are welcome. :D

Awesome, but a little creeped out.

This is now my favorite app. I have just finished 'And The Sun Went Out', and I adored (and slightly hated) the ending. Though I could go into much detail and all the things I loved, I shall not spoil the ending for new comers to this lovely game.

Though, I'm a wimp. I get really scared really easily. When I tapped on 'And their Souls were eaten' it said I had to be 13 or older to play this game. I'm 12. I'm slightly scared what I'll encounter when I start this next game when I turn 13. If I get nightmares (which doesn't happen often), I'm deleting ChoicesThatMatter , but overall, amazing game.

I have a few issues to report. First: Sometimes I press a certain choice, and it does the opposite one. I was in a collapsing building and it gave me the option to save someone or run away. I chose 'Save someone', but it had me run away instead. I do not know if this is the actual consequence that happens, or it is actually a glitch. Second: You have spelled a few things wrong. Minor things, really, but I have noticed you spelled 'please' as 'pleaes' and 'on' as 'en'. Not that big a deal, though.

This game makes the characters come to life. The wording is amazing, the choices are tough (especially in the end), and the whole aspect of the game is incredible.

I am very much excited to be playing 'And Their Souls Were Eaten' and 'And Their Heroes Were Lost'.

Great job, Tin Man Games!!

((Etienne and Moti 4 life.))

Sincerely,
LupinLover15

Amazing Game!!! But…..

I want to start by saying that this game is one of THE BEST choice based game out there. During the first and second stories, I was absolutely enthralled with the characters and small foreshadowing that existed. Every choice felt like it absolutely made a difference. My only complaint has to do with romances. I love that it gives you the option of who to be with, and wether or not you actually want love, but I wish there was more content after getting together, as the stories seemed to just end after you confess your love. There’s also just a few inconsistencies along the story. In The Sun Went Out, (SPOILERS), scientists were gathering on the plane and the story was making it seems as if I had never met Petrus, even though I spent time with him it Italy. It also talked about Wong as if we were friends, though I did not interact with the aetherites AT ALL in Tokyo. Other than these small things, this game is a TEN OUT OF TEN!!!

Loving it so far

I’m still working through “And the Sun Went Out”, but it’s absolutely incredible so far! The plot and characters are extremely engaging, and it just keeps you wanting for more! There are consequences for your actions, which I definitely like. (Which is a low bar, but it really makes you want to choose the best option.) And I absolutely LOVE the LGBTQ+ inclusion! It made me so much more excited that it existed (and the fact that you didn’t even have to choose romance as an option as well)! There are choice tickets where you typically have to watch ads to get them, but I’m totally fine with that as, a. it’s a free app with free stories, and b. you can just keep watching ads to get more! ChoicesThatMatter works pretty smoothly and the format is neat and readable (though my only complaint is that you can’t go back a page to figure out what it said if you missed it or accidentally tapped twice). Otherwise, everything is really, really, good, and if you’re interested in choose-your-own-adventure stories, this is definitely one to pick!

One of the best CYOAs I've played

This is one of the only apps I will willingly watch ads for. The stories are extremely well written, and the choices do really feel like they matter. You can tell that the writer(s) put a lot of thought and care into their stories. I also like that they give you options on how to obtain tickets. You can watch an ad, wait for a few hours, or buy the story. I've found too often where apps like this force you to pay or berate you with ads every minute. I would love to pay these writers for their hard work, but I'm unable to since I'm a minor and I don't have a job, and I'm really glad I can experience these beautiful stories without having to pay.
