BUGS: Saved "Keyboard and gestures" profiles seem to be overwritten when setting them as a default, or after renaming. I noticed because even when "Auto-Hide On-Screen Toolbar" is checked in the "Hardware Keyboard" section, sometimes the toolbar persists, which is annoying as it wastes screen space. It is also distracting when you have a hardware keyboard.
Even when you manage to make it work (by carefully making backups of your "Keyboard and gestures" profile, renaming twice, and never make any of them the default), the bottom of the screen where the toolbar would go is left blank and unusable, suggesting the toolbar area is always reserved and never usable.
SUGGESTIONS: "Scrollback enabled initially" should be a default, one tap should have an option to open settings (for full screen use), a real full screen mode should be added with just one toggle (without having to fight the toolbar) and actually using the entire screen (not reserving the toolbar area when it's not drawn)
WISHES: a way to remap hardware keyboard keys (ex: Globe)
This is definitely a first rate SSH app, and the 14 day free trial of premium features gives you a chance to really test drive it before committing. The premium upgrade is downright cheap, and a no brainer. I suggest everyone get it ASAP. 4.5 stars for the background connection issue I mention next.
My only issues so far: 1) It would be nice if Shelly at least notified you when it was about to close a connection while in the background. Termius does this on it’s free plan, and has a work around to keep connections open even longer on their much more expensive premium plan. 2) Mosh support would be nice. 3) I feel like the developer is unknown, and their website doesn’t even mention Shelly. Very strange considering how well executed Shelly seems.
It has every SSH feature Ikve ever used, save one (mosh). My favorite features: Reliable background connections, touch screen cursor keys, customizable extended keyboard keys (like moving my tab to the center of the screen for right thumb only typing).
It's the first non-game iOS app I've paid for, and months later, it was worth it.
Just having recently gotten into Linux/Unix and playing around with building so I can practice maintenance and administrative tasks.
I checked to see if there was an iPhone app for ssh (because there’s an app for everything) and based on the reviews, I went with this one.
I didn’t make it through the 14-Day trial, I am immediately sold. It’s easy to use, feels intuitive, lets me manage my stuff without having to go to my computer. It’s everything I was looking for.
For that price you cannot go wrong.
Keep up the good work!
i don’t know if that’s the author’s idea or not, but having Ctrl, Esc, /, and . keys is a huge usability boon for just about anything i need to do in a *nix terminal, so whoever thought of it is ingenious. and whoever thought up the way the arrow key works is a real inventive thinker, but i would trade the Fn key off for an Alt key, as i’m likelier to run Emacs in a terminal than WordPerfect 😜
Just simply outstanding. This is my only go to SSH client when I’m away from my computer. I host multiple linux systems using this terminal and have been for years. This is just as good as putty. Get the premium version, you will forever thank me.
This ssh client and terminal works better than way more expensive alternatives. It has the right amount of keyboard customization, modifier keys work well with Dvorak layout, key generation, importing and exporting are very convenient.
Suggestion: register it to handle .pem files so it can be opened directly from web browser.
I use this to connect to my own server at home so I can do basic updates on the fly and restart different applications.
I have tested a good handful of terminal apps and this app is the only one that does exactly what I need without any drawbacks. No ads or anything!
Plus, while they do lock some features behind premium they keep the most important and necessary ones free! Not to mention that premium is only $4, a fair price to pay to support the developers and unlock a few extra features that make the experience even better!
If you are looking for a good terminal app, stop searching because you just found the one.
This definitely is the best SSH app available on Apple devices. Quick connections and adjustable text sizes. Supports color codes in the terminal and can display ANSI art. Zero connection issues. Stores host keys and you have choices over which algorithm you prefer. All in all a very well-rounded terminal app.
this app is the best iOS SSH client; I've tried about a dozen of them. It has a clean interface and easy cursor movement by sliding your finger over the screen. Probably the best feature is the extensively customizable row of keys at the bottom of the screen. Shelly remains connected to the server when you move away to use a different app.
Shelly is a total game-changer. Within minutes, I can reboot, restart, and manage my server—all from my phone. It gives me an unbelievable sense of freedom and control, no matter where I am. Whether I’m traveling or just away from my desk, I have full command at my fingertips. Truly an essential tool for anyone managing servers remotely!
There are a slew of SSH apps available, but as far as straightforward ssh client applications go, this one provides the best convergence of utility, simplicity, and value. It ponies up everything one needs to manage one’s hosts—from workstations to servers—on the go, has a nice graphical presentation, and a rather good keyboard configuration environment. This last is not as minor as one might imagine, as access to asterisk, slash, and exclamation, keys is otherwise difficult and frustrating on an iPad or iPhone.
If it had an integrated cousin or sibling that worked on Mac desktop and laptop computers, it would be practically unbeatable, and best of all…NO GREEDY SUBSCRIPTION SCAM.
I use this app all day long to run Emacs under Screen on my iPad Pro with an Apple Keyboard-folio (or whatever they’re calling it this time). I could not be more pleased or more productive. There are many options under settings — one of which I used to set the keyboard [alt/option] key to send meta (since there’s no dedicated [esc] key on the Apple keyboard). Thankfully, there are no tabs taking up valuable screen space. It’s the best terminal I’ve used.
After Prompt switched to a stupid and very expensive subscription model, this is the perfect replacement. The Pro pack at $3.99 is a great value. I was immediately able to import my private key via iCloud Drive and was up and running in under five minutes. Powerline fonts are working, too, so Oh-My-Zsh shows my git branches beautifully. Great program and great value!
My tried and true ssh app still hasn’t added support for iPhone X. Tried a few other apps and landed with this one. Clean, sexy and simple. Upgraded to pro right away. Hate that other apps charge a yearly fee. That’s crazy.
*Updated review*
Just received the latest update. In my last review, I asked for Nerdfonts. As I was reviewing the new features, I was excited to see them added! The other features added are clearly from power users and very welcome! Thanks!
All I wanted was to use ssh from my phone and the to other apps that came up wanted subscriptions from me. I'm happy to put a few dollars down for the hard working developers but for something I'm just going to use on occasion I can't justify getting a subscription. I'm going to pay the $4 simply because this was the only ssh app that came up and worked right out of the box without complicated annoying menus.
I use Shelly while i am home or out and about for practically everything: home servers, work servers, routers, switches anything and everything that can be accessed with this terminal. it’s convenient having a tool like this for the phone, it’s written very well, i’ve hardly ever had a problem with it. I’ve been using this app for I’d say almost a year and finally decide to buy it. It’s only $5, i think it was well worth every penny.
A very slick, polished app, and it surprises by doing something useful when you start to think “I wish it would...” and you gets surprised when it does it (or comes very close).
It is clear the product has been developed by people who have logged many, many hours of left seat time working via SSH. They know what is useful and what just gives “good demo”.
The upgrade to the Pro version is exactly that. If all you ever do with SSH is login to reset the time or run backups, you may not need the upgrade. But it is a nice example of how to have a baseline product which isn’t lame-ware, and a Pro upgrade that isn’t just LEDs in the wheel wells.
And the upgrade price is a real bargain.
If this were a diner, the touring musician’s rating would be “Good Grease!”
I had been looking for a good terminal emulator in order to connect to my Linux severs for quite a while. This is the only app which gives you not only a full keyboard and customizable terminal, but also keeps the connection alive as long as possible. Other apps would disconnect after a few seconds in the background but not this one. In my opinion the premium version is well worth it.
This was exactly what I was looking for. And a one time fee of only $3.99?! (If you want the premium version). Thanks you for developing this and not charging a monthly fee!! That was the biggest selling point for me alongside the seamless functionality.
