Great idea with incredibly buggy execution

Absolutely love PorscheTrackPrecision if it would just work. I don't need any new functionality, just the knowledge that it will work to log data and then work again when I need to export it.
I've been trying to use it for months. A few versions ago it would only really log data without crashing half the time. It seems to do better now with more or less reliable logging so long as you don't enable video recording.
Then this latest version completely and utterly broke both export and import. 100% crash if I try to export any recorded session to vbo or csv. Export to tpa works, but import (to try and open it on an ipad in the hope that wouldn't crash) does absolutely nothing.

It's just not acceptable to be shipping software that blatantly breaks functionality like this. A little bit of testing would go a long way, these aren't corner cases, just blatant breaks that make it impossible to trust that PorscheTrackPrecision would do anything when you need it to.

No love for early adopters

I have a 2020 Taycan, which I waited for almost 2 years to take delivery of, through the early adopter program. And I track it, as all Porsches should be. PorscheTrackPrecision looks awesome but does not work with my car. Only 2022 model onwards, it seems. Many of us are passionate fans and early adopters and we seem to get punished for that early adoption as opposed to being encouraged. Beyond “not supported” or “not compatible” I am having a hard time getting an answer on how I can enable my car to work with PorscheTrackPrecision. Even though it has a pcm 6. I really think that a retrofit program should be conceived for such applications, within reasonable constraints, of course. Being behind two model years especially when hardware etc. should be there seems a travesty. Giving 2 stars because the concept is awesome albeit out of reach for some of us.

UPDATE: I had contacted customer support and just got the response saying it does not work for 2020 Taycan. Based on the developer response I contacted customer support again.

And again after a bunch of back and forth the response back was “ PorscheTrackPrecision is only available for 911 and 718 model vehicles prior to the year 2022 models.”

I already realize this and I highlight this in my review and did the same in the email I sent. So the response was not very illuminating.

My question really is how this can be enabled for 2020 model year Taycan. Either via a pcm update or some other step.

Latest version needs a lot of work, still looks like a beta full of bugs

Just opened the latest version of PorscheTrackPrecision that automatically download 3 days ago. I can no longer export video’s, the download locks up at around 75%. The replay function now puts the speed in KPM and not MPH and there does not appear to be any way to change the settings., The rev counter for some reason now shown my RPM on a Cayman GT4 shifting at near 10,000 RMP (I don’t think the warranty folks would like that. The replay defaults to the fastest lap and it’s not intuitive on how you get to the start of the session. I’ll be heading to a track event this week will let you know how it works to capture events. Also a large proton of PorscheTrackPrecision descriptions are in German.

Update: despite a response from Porsche to provide assistance on PorscheTrackPrecision issues, they were less than helpful. Went to another track event yesterday and PorscheTrackPrecision has completely stopped working. The events are recorded by cannot be viewed, when you attempt to analyze or look at the event, PorscheTrackPrecision crashes. Absolutely useless as it stands right now.

It used to be buggy; now it won’t connect to my car

I own a 2015 GT3. I was able to get PorscheTrackPrecision to connect and work in 2018. At the beginning of 2018 it would occasionally crash. After a revision or two, it worked well. I attempted to use PorscheTrackPrecision last month (Apr 2019) but was unable to connect the car to my phone via Wi-Fi. The password is GT3[VIN] but after 10 attempts—no joy. I closed all apps, restarted the iPhone X, deleted and reinstalled PorscheTrackPrecision ... I cannot get my phone to connect to the car. If you are on the fence about optioning Sport Chrono to use PorscheTrackPrecision, I would not plan on it working.
June 2019: The forums led me astray—the x is really an x in the password GTx[VIN]. The new interface is going to take some getting used to but now you can view video as you analyze data. One dislike is when you create a video, it displays your speed in kph and it doesn’t appear you can change it. Please make this more English friendly.

Update not working properly

PorscheTrackPrecision actually worked flawlessly during my 6/9 trackday in my GT4. Since the update the overlay data seems to be off (at first i thought it was in kph but even that doesnt translate properly) and the rpm is way off (has my car revving to 9k rpm). I also cannot export any video as it keeps getting stuck at 83%. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for your response. Just to respond to your response I have 160GB free on my phone...I also do not believe I am the only user having exporting issues.

Seems like a developer app

Perhaps 3.0.2 is a better interface but this still seems like a developer app that wasn’t quite ready for release. For example, the ‘preferences’ section is almost entirely in German and only C/ KPH are displayed on the video review (full screen video that looks like the cockpit view) even though I have selected F/ MPH as my analysis setting and English (US) as my settings.

I’m glad PorscheTrackPrecision now supports 4K video. PorscheTrackPrecision ’s video resolution selection is slow because I can select four video resolutions at one time and PorscheTrackPrecision cannot decide which resolution to choose.

PorscheTrackPrecision update corrupted part of a video file so now that video stops playing in PorscheTrackPrecision after approximately nine seconds.

Could be wonderful

First the UI is clear and concise compared to so many other track apps. Great there so far.

Video from the phone camera is easy to get set. ✅

Some issues I had this past weekend:

1. Video export is maybe in KPH but seems pretty inaccurate regardless. Cannot find a setting to change this.

2. Not sure if it using my phone GPS or the car’s, but either way it misses the start-finish line on most laps. I did 17 and it said I did 5 😂

3. The video export does not appear to have an option to not include the overlay. I like the overlay sometimes, but other times I just want to share the video.

4. When at a track day there potentially many porsches and many gopros. Finding and connecting which ones are mine could be easier.

5. Gopro was connected in their “Quik” app, but all seem to show up as (null), probably due to a change in GoPro software.

There are a few other things, maybe Porsche will fix some of this stuff first. 🤞🏼

Works well

Works well now.
I wish there was an option to record the final lap video even if the lap is not finished (pit in before start finish). This would help with reviewing mistakes when “Off track excursions” happen.
As of now if someone makes a mistake and goes off track, you are unable to review data if the lap is not completed (but a driver would usually return to the pit and not pass start\finish, so no data or video would be saved from the last lap...

Upload track and data

Version 2.4.3 has become much more stable. I’ve given it a 4 star rating, it would be 5, but I believe all users of PorscheTrackPrecision would like the ability to save the track like Harry’s Laptimer. It would also be nice to keep the videos and data loaded on PorscheTrackPrecision , but it’s deleted and reloaded... all is lost. PorscheTrackPrecision typically fails to work after an update. This requires the delete/reload action.

Never works properly.

Stop adding features and make PorscheTrackPrecision reliable with what it has. I am writing from Watkins Glen on the fourth of five straight track days. One constant: PorscheTrackPrecision cannot stay working for a full session on track. 20 minutes is a rarity. 5 minutes is common. That's a little more than two laps. It crashes. It crashes when working with CarPlay. It crashes working solo. It's virtual useless. It used to be stable. Now it is again garbage. Developers are unresponsive. Don't be fooled by their invitations to communicate here, attempts to actually communicate with them are ignored.

3.04 problems

Just liked at new upgrade. Previous videos are messed up. Speed seems to be in kilometers and tachometer reading way off. I am not shifting at 9 to 10,000 rpm in my GT4

Track Precision App

Update
The new app is completely useless and no one from Porsche cares.

The previous apps were great and I spent a lot of time using them to analyze my data to improve my skills.
You should have waited on releasing the ‘new’ Apps and at least warned people not to upgrade to these less functional programs.
The new iPad app has no analytics which is useless. Yes, this is a ‘future’ feature but again it’s useless without it. The iPhone app doesn’t have English units anymore, word Foreign language stuff, is too small to see (hence the recent investment in an iPad) and in my opinion the new app has completely missed the mark. I called 1-800-Porsche and contacted my dealer which were both useless endeavors.
Please provide a method to restore the previous versions of the Apps. If not, I guess it’s back to Harry’s even though I spent thousands of dollars on the track app option for my GT4.

Great idea, falls short

Keeps getting better but still has the same recurring problems on export.

At this point, viewing inside PorscheTrackPrecision and recording work well enough. Only occasionally does it fail to record a session or fail to record video.

However 100% of the time, export doesn’t work well enough to be usable. KPH Instead of MPH (app shows MPH), steering and pedal input are not in sync with video.

Great App

The 3.04 update addressed the issues I was having with export of higher lap (7+) runs, great!

PorscheTrackPrecision is invaluable for exporting to circuit tools to see the techniques you are working on (trail braking, threshold braking, etc).

My only wish would be for the lap timer in the car to dump directly to an SD card, bypassing the need to do the WIFI/phone/export/load to laptop process.

Needs Work

PorscheTrackPrecision has improved with V2 but still needs work. The two biggest issues I have are random crashes when recording (on IPhone X/GT3 - crashes 1 out of every 3 track sessions) and it will not display lap times when not on a "known" track. The second issue seems ridiculous given the car has a lap timer built in but you have to manually trigger each lap - which is much less safe than PorscheTrackPrecision automatically showing you lap times.

Good but Buggy

I’m using the Track Precision app with a 2015 GT3 and iPhone X. After some initial difficulty re-connecting to the car’s WiFi after the latest app update, I was able to successfully record a new track (Putnam Park, IN) not in PorscheTrackPrecision ’s track inventory. Greatly appreciate the analysis tools. Frustrated that I can’t export either data or video. The kph/mph mixup ought to be a minor fix. The video rpm readout is optimistic, sometimes approaching 10k rpm.

Use something else

When it works it’s great. PorscheTrackPrecision seems to be overly complicated. It worked some of the time in my 981 GT4. I just got a 982 Spyder, PorscheTrackPrecision worked yesterday with CarPlay, and today it does not work at all. I am going to set up Harry’s Lap Timer before my next track outing. There does not seem to be a support option like BMW apps. Car is great! Maybe I will do the radio delete on the next one.

By

Please bring back external video export

Please bring back the capability of exporting the data overlay visuals on external video devices like GoPros and other action cameras. The previous versions were able to do this and that was key in getting quality video with using your app.

Also, some of the data export is a bit off such as the maximum speed, it said i hit 201MPH at Laguna Seca while only doing a 1:42 lap time.

Bugs after Bugs

I saved my laps on GoPro and transferred to my iPhone. When I try to add the video, it’s bugs after bugs. I can’t select which lap matches which video, and when I synch one video, it gives a black thumbnail, If I trie to export the video, PorscheTrackPrecision crashes, it created a list of the same video and you can’t delete. I spend more than 4 hours trying, is so frustrating.

By

Basic features work, but full of bugs

App is full of bugs. When I try to select language, it crashes. When I export video, it changes the units from MPH to KPH. Video is constantly hunting and shaky with focus and stabilization no matter how I set the auto stabilization settings.

Porsche Track Precision App

I enjoy PorscheTrackPrecision when it is working properly. But until very recently, I have found that PorscheTrackPrecision has a lot of bugs. It is very frustrating when you think you have made a good run to have PorscheTrackPrecision quit just before reaching the end of your run. I have repeatedly deleted PorscheTrackPrecision when it has problems and downloaded PorscheTrackPrecision and recorded my coarse again. It always worked when recording the track for the first time but would often have problems on subsequent runs. My latest download has been working well on more runs than ever before. I will keep my fingers crossed !

Cannot export video or data - keeps crashing

The application keeps crashing on my iPhone X (iOS 12.3.1) and I’m unable to export videos or data - although it did work once. Be aware that when the video does export the overlay will only display kph rather than mph- here in the US, the analysis is in mph. There needs to be work to have the data/video export consistently
On a positive note: I was at Sonoma Raceway on July 3rd 2019 and the autostart on the course worked flawlessly- much better than the old versions
The video overlay is a little too large and obscured the track - a smaller overlay would be much better

CarPlay

Although PorscheTrackPrecision appears under the CarPlay menu on the phone, the icon do not appear on the PCM screen (992 MY20).
The recognition of where the start line is and automatic lap recording is hit or miss.
External GPS recognition to improve signal doesn’t work, even using a iOS compatible GPS device.
All in all, it’s a good idea with a better looking interface but doesn’t work for the most part.
Free apps like track genius or paid like Harry’s are dependable. This is not.

New release removes most of the iPad functionality

It's always been a bit fickle with crashes etc but worked. The iPad analysis was one of the most useful functions, with the new ’improved version’ it just says analysis is, ’coming soon’ in the ’next version’. In short this version shouldn't have been released until it was as complete at the version it replaced. It's a big step backwards.
