Terrible, don’t waste time

Terrible. VoiceMap won’t let you get off their path. It went around and backtracked several times. But if you tried to go to the next site on your own, it tells you turn around or go back. UGH! They should number the sites and allow you to jump ahead to another number if you desire. For example one of the roads was blocked off by police. VoiceMap wouldn’t let us advance to the next “site” until we went down that road only. We went another route but VoiceMap wouldn’t advance. It kept telling us to go back.
It could be such an easy fix. Number the sites; let listeners choose the number they want to hear about; even if they get there on their own. Ugh!

Richmond Tour where is the history???

I’m sorry but so far this has been the worst audio tour I have ever done. Why did I walk all along here just to hear about how this person I don’t know got locked out of her apartment? We passed so many amazing spots without any mention of their history. Not even a mention of the balboa theater! Massive oversight. Also, these long silences could be largely improved with some music. The Detour app was much better than this. It is waaay to specific to this random girl’s life. We want info on the actual neighborhood. Very disappointed with this. I’m am typing this while the narrator tells some dark story about her aunt and a cult, presumably to add some intrigue to the tour. But it just feels so random and weird and again, has so little to do with learning about the history of this neighborhood since it is so specific to this one person’s experience.

Solid core but a little rough around the edges

I've followed a couple of tours and found their content to be good. VoiceMap itself is easy to use on the whole, but I wish you could open up the directions to the starting point in Google Maps as I don't have Apple Maps installed on my phone. Some indication of the cardinal direction to the starting point (if navigating without using a map) would also be appreciated (e.g. "30 yards to the north" rather than just "30 yards away"). And this is quite minor, but I don't need to receive the whole "You've paused the tour. To resume..." spiel every time I pause. Once when you first use VoiceMap or even once every day or tour would probably be sufficient to remind most people. Lastly, there seems to be a minor bug with the download status where it shows the last map segment (I think it was the map) as not having completely downloaded until I restart VoiceMap . That happened for both tours I downloaded.

Good app with potential to be excellent

Let me to start off by saying that functionality wise, this is a very exciting app. The audio synced to location works well and it’s an exciting way to explore a city on your own if you don’t wish to do an organized group walking tour. The tours I took through VoiceMap in Granada, Spain completely enhanced my trip to the city taking me to places I wouldn’t go on my own and giving me a ton of great information in the history of the city. That said, I found that the tours for other cities I used VoiceMap in (Seville and Madrid) were much less successful. VoiceMap runs on free lance content and it’s missing a lot of basic walking tours for popular tourist cities, and some of the tours it does offer for those cities are too niche to be appealing for most users. Hopefully this will change in the future if VoiceMap continues to attract creators but right now it’s missing some key content.

Great When You’ve Found the Right One

The tours themselves have been excellent. Well paced and really feels like you’ve got a great guide by your side.

VoiceMap itself needs a little work— primarily the search function for find the tour that’s best you.

If you know EXACTLY what you want to see (a particular neighborhood or historical site), it’s easy— but if you’re trying to find something interesting in a city generally, it’s impossible. There seems to be no way to narrow down interests in a popular location/ big city to discover something new.

Really like the app

I really like VoiceMap and the tour I purchased downloaded and walked. The only problem I had was that after I closed VoiceMap when I took a break from the walking tour for lunch, it appeared that it was dumped from my phone and needed to be downloaded again. This would be a significant problem in the middle of the city with no WiFi and slow cell service. As it happened that was not the case but VoiceMap needs to be clearer and more specific about a safe way to pause or stop the tour and reactivate it later with a minimum amount of stress. Also beware that to have VoiceMap running continuously over a long period is going to eat the phone battery. Carry an extended battery pack or charger just in case.

Let’s Wait & See

Was excited to download VoiceMap . Had never heard of anything like this & it had great reviews. Downloaded & then the trouble started. App kept crashing. Deleted and reloaded twice. Would get past a page or 2 and crash again. Rebooted phone & waved my magic wand and was finally able to actually start a tour. Well, it started…about 6 blocks ahead of where it showed us on the map. Took awhile and some more feats of technology knowledge but we finally synced us and VoiceMap . Lastly, directions would verbally instruct you away from the onscreen map & leave you hanging. Went back to following just the map and the descriptions began again.

The tour was great. Very informational and I look forward to trying another location. I just hope I’ve exorcised all the glitches.

Excellent tour of Toulouse - not to be missed

For first time or return visitors, this is an excellent this app tour of the old city center area of Toulouse. Not only is Elyse an excellent historian/art historian, but she also gives wonderful context to the buildings, but also adds details and notes of places you might want to pause at or return to after the tour to take a closer look. Also don’t miss her conversations that you can access through the website and podcast called Join Us in France. There are many episodes that take place in Toulouse and great ideas for day trips in and around Toulouse.

Great for self guided tours in various cities

This has been a great app to use as you travel to different cities. It gives you enough information for each of the different stops to understand and you can always take deeper on your own if you want. It’s a pretty leisurely tour and the great thing is you can stop and take in a site or even talk to locals. At one point in Charleston I stopped and helped a lady take some groceries in and actually got to go inside the building that the tour was talking about. What a cool experience that I would never of gotten doing a normal “tour“

Loved the tour!

Enjoyed the interesting history. Lots of cute shops and places to eat or snack. Nice stop at the pioneer living museum where we panned for gold and used the restroom. We spent 4-5 hours enjoying all the sights and didn't make it to the last stop: the beautiful truss bridge, though we did drive by it and listened to the last of the audio in the car. I like how VoiceMap lets you go at your own pace and repeat or advance as needed. We didn't bring headphones but they would have been helpful due to the street noise. Also be careful at some of the busy crossings!

Great for cost-effective tours

Essentially VoiceMap is a virtual walking tour app. The recorded tour guide will give you directions, or you can follow the map to the next location. Once you reach a location the next audio recording automatically starts.

I have used this while my husband and I are traveling around Europe from America, to save on expenses. The tours we have done are fantastic, informative, fun, and the guides have usually made us laugh. It feels as if they are right there with us.

I will definitely be recommending it to friends and family, as well as my boss at the travel agency I work at.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I hardly ever, if I ever write a review about an app, but I downloaded this one this morning upon arriving in Verona, Italy, and I had such an amazing day learning about the town, its history, its most famous landmarks, in such an easy to follow way while guided by a native Veronese. VoiceMap uses your location and is very precise. I can’t recommend VoiceMap enough.
Yes, you will have to pay to download individual guides for each city but trust me, if you are visiting a city and are interested in actually learning about it, a few bucks is totally worth it.

Excellent Walking Tour of Cheltenham

What a great time! I felt like I had my own personal tour guide letting me know all the historical and fun facts about Cheltenham! The tour was easy to load, start, understand, pause and stay on track. I went slowly, pausing to take pictures or listen to the narrative over again to ensure I captured all the details. It took me 2.5 hours to complete. I absolutely would not have seen or understood so much had I not had this audio guide. Well worth the expense and the walking! I highly recommend this walking tour!

Rome for Readers: A Literacy Tour of the Eternal City by Tiffany Parks

I recently took this took while on a side trip to Rome. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so enchanted, educated and in complete marvel all at once. This tour leaves nothing left to be desired. Tiffany’s attention to detail and extensive historical reference brings every piece of Rome to life - as if you were walking back in time! I really loved the pauses in between points and the pace with which the tour was given. I couldn’t recommend this tour more and will certainly be taking any others that are offered!

Wonderful way to walk, learn and see

We’ve just started using this app and are very pleased with the tours we’ve tried (Krakow and Prague). The voice guided tours are fun, flexible, easy to use, and very informative. We like to walk so they fit our touring style nicely. I am sure we’ll use many more as we expand our travels. If you enjoy walking and seeing sites without being in a group VoiceMap may be for you. There are also tours for some interesting things that you won’t find in organized tours.

Excellent App

We used VoiceMap to explore Pompei since we did not want to be restricted by a tour or pay hundreds of dollars. VoiceMap works extremely well, even offline. With a little patience in the beginning, you get the hang of it really fast and it was so smooth, guiding us all the way and playing automatically once we arrived at the sites. I will say, I wish it was more thorough, there was a lot in Pompei that the guide did not explain or walk us through but I guess it would probably be 6+ hours to cover it all, so I guess it makes sense to keep it concise. We decided to go all the way to the end of the tour then explore the rest on our own and it worked just fine. Overall, it was really worth it for my family and I!

Sacramento Delta Tour (CA)

A very nice tour. We split it into two weekends. We really looked forward to resuming the tour. The driving directions are super clear, once you leave the mall in which it starts. Nice stories and super clear narration. Driving on the levies is not for the faint of heart (but we were in a tall, wide van, and a smaller, less tall, and narrower vehicle would be better. The river is just beautiful. We went in early November, so the air was crisp and the leaves were changing. Try to start an hour before lunch, so you can eat at Al’s.

Wonderful tour of Charleston!

Taking a tour with a family of 6 can be cost-prohibitive, so we discovered this app looking for a less expensive way to visit Charleston, SC and better appreciate the history and significance. We found VoiceMap to be exactly what we needed. We found the historical and architectural background to be helpful and very interesting, and we loved going through alleys and less-toured areas. The map gave us confidence that we were headed the right way, and the audio cues were very helpful.

Wow!

This was such a great add-on to my golf cart rental! This truly added another dimension to the recommended scenic route and I could see myself do this again on an electric bike! It was great to be guided around town without worrying about getting lost and I have everything that I was looking at being explained to me as I was driving along. Such a great way to experience Catalina and get a sense of the surroundings! I would recommend this add-on to anyone that is thinking about renting an electric bike or a golf cart on catalina island!

Excellent driving tour 17 mile drive

This tour was excellent. The information was just enough. The pace was great. We stopped and got out at Spanish bay and Pebble Beach. We pulled out at most of the other stops to view. Traffic was the worst at the Lone cypress so we didn't stop. We have dogs. EVERYTHING was dog friendly. We do tours this way because of dogs. We walked out on the boardwalk at Spanish bay. It's a must. We saw tge 18th green at PB. Even if you're not a golfer the $10 is worth it. You learn so much history that you would otherwise miss. Navigation was spot on!
