The free version is deceptive

2022-05-22

I never write product reviews, but I feel people researching Seven should be warned. The first week you get access to pretty much everything and it is great. Easy to use, shows how to do each exercise, great variety of moves and plans for different goals.

HOWEVER. After that first week, the plug is completely pulled on you. Almost the entire app is locked off behind a subscription. All the plans and the vast majority of workouts are locked behind a subscription of $10 per month. The free version they offer has about a dozen basic exercises, and when I tried it 3/12 of them were just simple jumping jacks. The only other option is to do the hourly live workout, but that completely removes the convenience of doing 7 minutes on a busy schedule. They counter by saying you unlock more workout programs after 2 months but again Seven locks you out after 1 week until you buy a subscription.

Very frustrated with the experience on Seven and will be deleting. My advice to anyone reading is to look elsewhere. There are tons of other workout apps that aren’t a bait and switch like this one is.

Horrible for Beginners

2022-06-23

I am a beginner. I don’t have a lot of experience working out at home. I thought this my be a great app to try. It led me through some questions, and then presented me with starting my first work out. I specifically specified I was a beginner during the sign up process. I pressed the button to start the workout and Seven immediately went into drill instructor mode. It began counting off exercises without any explanation as to what the exercise was or how to properly do it. The first one, jumping jacks, was easy enough to figure out. Then it went on to things like “wall chair.” As a novice, I had no idea how to do it. Do I do reps? Do I hold the position? How do I make sure I’m doing it properly? When it got to push ups, apparently it just assumed I was fit enough to do a full set (I don’t even know how many that was), same with sit ups. It went so quick that I barely had time to look and see what type of sit-up. Did they want my arms behind my head or in front of me? It was already 2/3 through the count when I figured it out. Finally I stopped the workout. It asked me if I was sure I wanted to quit, and I said yes. I lost all data from the sets I had completed. Also, there was no way to tell Seven how many push-ups I actually did versus what Seven wanted me to do.

Seven might be okay if you already somewhat fit and know what you’re doing, but it left me feeling frustrated.

Good presentation but a number of exercise issues

2022-07-24

Seven is great in all but the exercises. Some of them are difficult to do indoors with limited space. Seven also likes to throw something at you like step-ups or tricep dips that require furniture, or wall sits that require open wall space, and it gives you zero warning in order to find something suitable. So you’re either scrambling to find the necessary equipment/space within the 10 seconds you’re supposed to be resting, you have to pause it in which case it’s no longer 7 minutes and you lose intensity, or you have to skip them. I flat out can’t do some of them because I’m either too tall to do it indoors and/or I don’t have suitable furniture or free space.

This is all compounded by the fact that you can’t choose to exclude an exercise from future workouts. Rather than say “hey I don’t have the necessary space or furniture for tricep dips, stop showing me them” it’ll just keep trying to get you to do them over and over. There are usually 3-4 exercises I can’t do out of the 12, that’s a quarter of the workout gone. I’m in the free trial too, so supposedly there are 200 exercises, yet it still shows me the same one I have to skip over and over.

It has potential but it needs a lot of work.

Bad subscription experience

2022-08-25

A week has passed now, and I still don’t see the problem solved. Still couldn’t cancel my subscription, and the 7 day free trial will end soon. In addition, only annual subscription was presented to me at that time, so I guess I’ll be charged the annual fee soon? Well, the response from the team doesn’t work, so I have to report the issue to Apple.

————————————————————

Seven is really cool and useful. However, the subscription experience is really bad. When I started the 7 day free trial, it didn’t give me the choice to be charged monthly or annually after 7 days, but automatically selected annually for me. When I wanted to changed it, I found that clicking Edit Subscription will give me a blank page. When I tried to contact their support in App Store, the page shows 404...So basically you block me from different ways to manage my subscription. I’m a PM myself, so I understand where this comes from. Either it’s because you don’t think this experience is vital to users, you didn’t pay enough attention to it to make it right. Or, you just want to add friction to this process. Either way, it’s a very bad experience for users. Users will lose trust in Seven .

Disappointed

2022-09-26

I never review apps but this really got under my skin. Seven started off great. I’m a new mom (during a pandemic nonetheless) and trying to get back to working out. I’ve crashed and burned when trying to jump right back into my old 30-60 min workouts so 7 minutes was doable for me. I went almost a whole week working out and I felt great! The workouts were fun, I loved the variety, the live workouts, the duels, achievements, pretty much all of it! I was pumped for the next week and then boom! I’m locked out 😡 I understand app developers need to make money but I feel the option to either pay or continue free with limited features should always be an option. Completely locking me out immediately and forcing me to pay if I wanted to continue, made me stop using your app and not wanting to pay. There are SO many fitness apps on the market now so from an app developer’s perspective, I think you should give the consumer the option to pay or not pay. Most apps do that and they are successful. We’re still in a pandemic and people can’t go to the gym. Now is the time to appeal to the consumer and not back them into a wall to pay for your app. I bet if you let them workout for free with limited features and they’re successful with reaching their goals, they’ll upgrade later. Just my two cents 🤷🏼‍♀️

Free app is just a hook

2022-10-27

I was disappointed with Seven, because you can’t tell from the free version whether or not it’s any good. It gives you random daily workouts that may or may not be at your fitness level, and you have to do them every day for two months in order to unlock a new workout. You can miss two workouts each month, but the third one re-sets your progress. Seven asks you to decide how many days per week you will work out. I chose six days. One rest day each week seemed like a good idea. But Seven counted my chosen rest day against me and started my two months over! WHAT?
The thing is, if I’m just starting out in a fitness routine, I’m not paying for something I don’t know I’ll be willing to stick to. And I can’t figure out if I’m willing to stick to it if it’s constantly random and not a true trial of Seven ’s services. Yes, I could use the free 7-day trial, but Seven just feels like a constant plug to buy their yearly subscription, which is a tactic that annoys me. Have a solid lite version and let me decide from there.
At any rate, I did some more homework and will be switching over to a different this app minute workout app.

Accessibility for seated/limited mobility is lacking.

2022-11-28

First the main glaring issue: Seated exercises are locked behind the paywall. Seated exercises should be made available for free, especially as there are individuals who are disabled or limited mobility who could benefit from a free, daily seated exercise. Please make this available for everyone, and don’t exclude disabled or limited mobility individuals. I have family members with limited mobility who could greatly benefit from this simple exercise app if seated workouts were included for free, and I imagine the user base could grow as well.

I also feel like unlocking workouts permanently should be easier to accomplish rather than unlocking a single one after a 3 month workout-streak. These challenges could be interrupted due to circumstances outside of the user’s control. It seems awfully unforgiving.

Apart from my gripes on accessibility and unlocking workouts, I enjoy Seven for getting a quick, high-intensity workout in. The exercises are pretty straightforward, though I modify some of them as they’re too intense for me. The interface is well polished and nice to look at. Be aware that the workout timer has a glitch where the final 3-second countdown either happens to slow or fast. Hopefully this can be addressed.

Greatly improved Apple Watch interaction

2022-12-29

Update July 2018- The interaction with Apple Watch now works very well. My only complaint is that when upgrading phones this app forgets my favorites on the watch and doesn’t seem able to get them back.

June 2017- Love Seven itself, but it doesn't always play well with others. I use this app with my Apple Watch. With previous versions I would frequently find that my workouts did not register with the phone app causing broken hearts and much unhappiness. It appeared to have been fixed with a late update in v2, but as of June 2017 the watch app still randomly cancels the workout midway through then forgets that I had a workout in progress. Also, last year I had two weeks left in the this app Month Challenge when I lost my phone. Despite the claims of cloud synchronization I was not able to restore my progress. It's just an arbitrary milestone, right?

Good app! Needs more for those who aren’t subbed tho.

2023-01-30

Ok. I love Seven. It motivates you to keep pushing yourself till you meet your goal. I do have a problem with the 80% that is locked behind a monthly subscription (or yearly I can’t remember). I wish that we could watch an ad and get access to the workout for 1 exercise. Like, if u wanna do core, u watch an ad, and get to do 1 core routine exercise, like planks and sit-ups, and crunches etc. You get all that for 1 exercise, and have a time limit till u can go it again. Then if you still want to exercise, you can go to a different exercise and do the same thing, getting another time limit till you can watch an ad to do it. That, to me, would be a better system that what you have now. Again, great app, but I do hope you take in mind what I’ve said about the ad thing. Seven also has a great community. I like the live workouts as well! Everything about Seven I like besides the fact that I won’t have access to different exercises unless I want to do a live workout, which I can’t control when I have time to exercise.

I love seven

2023-03-03

this app is amazing I would recommend this you can do also if it’s too much for you don’t have to have a account so if you’re not old enough or email or you can’t use your parents email at the time you can continue with our account you just won’t have as much privileges I don’t have a email so I don’t have that many privileges but it is also fun and it’s a good workout it does make you sweat you also feel burn but it’s normal it’s nothing to worry about it’s just me such a burn calories it shows you how many calories you are burned you also have to hook it up to health if you have an iPhone like me you have to hook it up to health to let it all have access to the health and whats your limit to your heart you know stuff like that to make sure that don’t cause any heart damage so I really advice this app

A little challenging

2023-04-01

I have trouble doing push-ups and almost every arm exercise. But I always think to myself when I think it is hard is that I just say I know this is challenging but if you keep doing it you will get stronger. I love Seven but in the beginning I wasn’t ready for push-up’s and it was just a little challenging when I had to do it. I also was having a questions about what do you think is one way to help me eat healthy for like a snack when I’m done with the workout or after school? 🤩🤩 Also sometimes on the workouts my arms give out is that normal? Also and one ☝️ last thing when people workout 🏋🏻‍♀️ is it normal to be so tired 😴 , and you feel like you can’t do anymore? Well thank you 🙏 for listening 👂 and I hope 🤞 you answer back sponsors!!😇😇😇😇😇💪🏻💪🏻

Life changing

2023-05-03

I went from not working out for 5 years to not missing a day in 90 days. this app eliminates the most common excuses for not working out: finding time, traveling to a gym, investing in equipment, etc. I work out after I wake up before showering right in my living room. It also eliminates the uncertainty about what to do next, as it suggests workouts based on your goals (Fitness, Strength, or Weight). All you have to do is press “Start” and a workout will be loaded for you that takes into account what muscles you worked on the day before, as well as your goals/difficulty. I have tried everything: gym memberships, trainers, working out with a buddy, etc. this app has been the only thing that has motivated me to be more active. More than worth it to pay the subscription since it is way less than most gym memberships.

Highly recommend!

2023-06-03

I seriously love Seven. I used to do a 20 minute Pilates workout but started slacking because I didn’t have the time (I’m a strictly morning workout person only). I found Seven and fell in love! I always have time for a this app minute workout. It’s been a year and a half and I’m stronger, have more muscle, and at least half of my pains have gone away! I highly recommend Seven; it will change your life!

I have one recommendation. Instead of showing the number of workouts, you should show the duration of workouts. One person may do a this app minute workout which shows as one workout. But when someone does a thirty minute workout, it still shows as one workout. So on the leagues they would be tied. Leagues should show duration instead because the two workouts are not equivalent.

Surprisingly challenging-in a good way

2023-07-05

To keep it brief, I think this exercise app is very cool. I have never considered even looking for an exercise app, as I have independently been on the ball for most of my life. However, status post 3 young kids, full time job, and general daily survival, exercise has been taking last place for the priorities of my life. Nevertheless, I’m not sure where I found this little diamond in the rough of apps, but taking 7 min out of the day (more like 10 bc I need to rest more than the average person) to break a sweat and work my muscles seems ludicrous not to fit in my day. Mostly bc I know it’s the right thing to do. Seven is super easy to use and easy on the eyes with excellent descriptions and demonstrations of the exercises. Definitely worth trying if you need to fit in a short exercise routine into your day.

This app changed my life

2023-08-05

I usually don’t leave app reviews, but I couldn’t let people not know how amazing Seven is.

I downloaded this back in July 2019. I was overweight. I hid the weight very well and didn’t look “big” on the exterior, but every time I stepped on the scale, I knew it time for a change. I also wanted to lose some pounds before my best friend’s wedding in November 2019. I downloaded Seven to give me some motivation to be active and put it front and center on my phone so there’s was no excuse for me to ignore it.

I worked out Mondays-Fridays at 7 pm (keeping with the theme/title of Seven ). The workouts were very hard to do at first and soon it became all too clear how out of shape I was. But I didn’t let that deter me. I kept pushing.

With Seven, a healthier diet featuring smaller portion sizes and virtually no takeout food, 1-2 liters of water a day and increased fruit and veggie intake, I was able to lose 10 lbs before my best friend’s wedding. I still use Seven to this day with the same weekday schedule and have lost a grand total of 25 lbs. I never thought in a million years I would go back to weighing as much as I did in high school. I honestly could not have done it without Seven pushing me to my absolute limits.

If you need a sign to download this and change your life, here it is!

I love this app!

2023-09-06

I love Seven because unlike a lot of other workout apps I feel like there’s a lot of stuff that’s too hard for me to do ( I mean they don’t start off at a level of challenge that fits where I am physically), Seven has workouts for beginners like me who need help. They aren't to hard but I still feel like I’m getting a really good workout. I also like that it gives you options of what kind of works you want. You can do group workouts, random workouts for when you just feel it, or a daily workout. And I also like that they aren’t too long and if I feel like I could have done more I can tell them why and they will change it for my next workout. At the end of each workout they ask you how hard it was and then use that information to make your next workout better. I love Seven and highly recommend!

My favorite workout app!!!! SO MOTIVATING!!!

2023-10-08

I was on the quarantine struggle bus when I somehow discovered Seven. I am normally very active but my usual go to apps were no longer helping and I was feeling extremely unmotivated and very out of shape. I am currently on a 36 day streak since I did my first 7 minute workout on Seven . And through the BRILLIANCE of Seven design, I am now even doing multiple 7 minute workouts each day. And none of it has felt forced, it’s all been a very natural progression that has never been boring because every day is different. I have never had an app that is so easy to use that does all the thinking for me. All I have to do is show up! 7 minutes are over before you know it so you never dread starting. And there are more features and challenges I haven’t even gotten to yet. Every app should look to this one to help get their customers happily hooked!! Seven WORKS!!!!!!

My new favorite!

2023-11-08

Before and during COVID, I tried out a lot of diet/exercise apps to get some results from my routines. I settled on Keto for diet but could not find what I was after til I hit upon 7. This is an ideal app, I think. Foremost, there is no trainer doing a bunch of repetitious counting, which I find very annoying. And you can configure that function any way you like. If you would like a drill sergeant, they’ve got that too. Next, you can do from 1-5 set repetitions, so you can do as many or as few as you have time for on any particular day. Every day has a different set of exercises and there is a library full of different sets. There is a “live” exercise option, when it’s active, anyone who joins in is working out “with” others all over the world. Pretty cool. I absolutely love Seven and I love that it’s only about $40 a year. Most others seemed to be $20 and above per month. Better quality, lower price. Can’t beat it! I’m kind of addicted!!!

You will be surprised how 7 can change your life

2023-12-10

That’s a big statement, I know. But 7 has taken me from someone who did not exercise to one 7 workout a day, to now having a 531 day streak. The key is to get started.

I’ve got a fair amount of experience with Seven. We average at least 3 a day as part of our workout program. This is our go-to for body weight HIIT. You can use it most anywhere and it’s got a pretty good variety of exercises when you are a subscriber. It could use more though - after 531 days there does tend to be some repetition. Though the new additions of the weekly plans and the challenges help mix it up.

Would love to see integration with other components like weights or TRX - yes, I realize those require additional components (though TRX can be bodyweight only) but they would provide a lot more variations.

I would also love to have the option for a family plan. For a long time both my wife and I could use this no problem. Then Seven changed and we had to transfer the subscription back and forth even though we are on the same iTunes account. Now it appears this no longer works and each person has to get a subscription.

If you are just starting out getting into shape this is a great way to do it. It’s only 7-10 minutes a day at a minimum. Soon that will be too easy and you’ll do more. Before you know it you’ve completed the 7 month challenge and changed your body and your health. You can do it!

Thus is a great app!!

2024-01-10

Get Seven! Seven has helped me SO much. It’s very easy to use - all you have to do is press start! It goes right into a 5 second countdown, allowing you to get into position for the exercise. This creates a sense of urgency that increases your chances of committing and following through with your desire to exercise, consequently increasing your overall self-esteem!

I’m in my 20’s and have a lot of joint problems, which makes it very difficult for me to exercise. I also have severe ADHD that makes it incredibly difficult to come up with my own workout plan. Usually I’ll want to workout but i don’t have the motivation to actually do so. I started using Seven less than a week ago and I’ve already noticed that I have ✔️increased energy✔️ increased ability to focus ✔️ less stress and anxiety. Just give it a shot! You won’t regret it!

Used to be much better

2024-12-23

I’ve been using Seven for quite some time. It used to be much better before as you had to earn workouts through keeping up with the exercises, but now you can simply purchase everything. Back when you had to earn workouts, I found myself not missing a day, I completed it everywhere, even on vacation. I felt the need to earn was enough to push me and I worked harder to acquire the missing sections. Now with purchasing it all, I barely use Seven, only when I’m short on time and still only the free section. I find having to pay for it took away my motivation to use Seven as there is plenty out there for free. Seven isn’t SO amazing I need to spend money on it. The amazing part with keeping up with the workouts and the motivation that came from it to keep earning more workouts and badges. Now that portion is gone and I find myself using other apps and videos instead, for free cause I don’t need or want to spend the money. Sorry!

Good design marred by crashes on watch

2024-12-23

I really want to call Seven my go-to for workouts. The default Scientific this app-Minute Workout makes for a great daily routine – even in a hotel room – and if time allows, I can easily opt for multiple circuits. The watchOS app even illustrates exercises and allows for basic workout configuration, which makes it the best I’ve used so far…when it launches at all.

Thing is, unless I wait the six or this app minutes to restart my Watch, Seven is more likely to crash on launch three to five times before it successfully starts; and about half the time, it crashes before it writes my heart rate data to HealthKit, dropping a ton of useful biofeedback about performance and recovery.

If they could fix the crashes on the watch, I’d pay for a subscription and enjoy varying my routine. As it is, I’m going to keep my eye out for a similarly designed app that’s reliable.

Update with a great example: I just used the watch app to configure a two-circuit workout (2x 7 minutes) and started in. After one circuit, the announcer says, “Workout complete!” Fine. Whatever. I tap the workout to start it again, and after the first circuit is finished, it decides to move on to a second circuit this time. I swipe right and the only option, of course, is [Cancel], so it doesn’t log that second workout at all!

Not as great

2024-12-23

Okay so originally I loved Seven, gave it a five star rating, everything. But after a few months of using it and after I got restarted because I had to work out for five minutes a few days on another app due to a busy schedule, I have discovered a
few major flaws.

1. Counts calories during rest?
Okay, so this app had this great upgrade where you can see how many calories you burn while working out. And guess what? I realized I was burning calories DURING THE REST PERIODS. I don’t even have to explain why that’s bad.

2. It doesn’t count workouts under 7 min from other apps.
Honestly, I mainly use Seven because it uses data from other apps connected to health to tell me if I worked out that day and how many calories I burned altogether. The workout app I was using had some nice exhausting 5 min cardio workout that burned about 72 calories. Afterward I had to hurry to work. It didn’t track the workout though and ruined my streak. Altogether I feel like my confidence level has dropped 30% because of that, especially since I’ve been eating extremely healthy lately. Thanks for nothing.

I would strongly recommend using Zova for workouts and collaborative calorie counting. I also use Lifesum and 8fit, which are great apps.

7 minutes changed my life

2024-12-23

Thank you so much for making an app so simple and yet motivating. I’m not fond of the gym but this little app has changed my view toward caring for my health. I first began with the 7 minute stretch routine. I was slightly overweight and very inflexible. I began to see improvement in my flexibility in just one day. After a few days of the basic stretch I ventured into more difficult exercises. I love it. I’ve been using it for over a year now. I’ve lost weight, toned up and I keep preaching to my family members how easy it is to start and keep a healthy routine with Seven. Several people I know are all using the 7 app. If you are too busy to spend 7 minutes a day to improve your health then get ready to waste time being sick or fatigued.

What I need

2024-12-23

I appreciate the brevity and variety of the workouts. Because I do them at home, I can choose what I want to focus on: form, speed, quantity, uh... rest... I am in control, and can adapt to what my particular needs are at the time of the workout. I love the fact that there is no music, and no one bullying me to take chances my muscles aren’t ready for, and I can turn off push reminders.
I had a shoulder strain that prevented me from doing side plank and push-ups for a few months, so during those exercise times I worked on form; when I was ready, I was doing the exercises better than pre-injury. I did have to research on the correct way to do a push-up (no shame in needing more information) but for a quick maintenance workout Seven has been very helpful.

Effective, efficient, and convenient

2024-12-23

I cannot capture just how much I love Seven. I paid the fee for the complete app. It is so worth it. If you feel like it’s too much, compare it to the monthly gym membership. So many different workouts with the full membership, which means you won’t get bored. Plus this works. I travel a lot, and I always have my devices with me. No excuses. I once did a workout a little past midnight. I’m sure the gym wasn’t open, but guess what was. You got it - 7. My last comment is about the difference it made. After just one month, people actually noticed my weight loss (people who didn’t even know that I was trying!). If I haven’t convinced you yet, nothing will. But don’t complain later how you’re not in shape. It will be your own fault.

Gets the blood pumping!

2024-12-23

I came back after my cruise and knew I needed to start something for a fitter me! I know this will get me motivated to get back in the gym. I just did my 7.5 minutes now it’s shower time before work. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

I really like this workout. I’ve used it for several years (on and off again). Initially, I was pooped could barely finish, couldn’t do the high-knees running in place so I modified it with high-knees marching in place 😛. After a week or so, I notice that my repetitions increased for each exercise and I had the desire to go to the free gym that was less than a 5 minutes walk from my residence. I’m back in again, and trying to build up the desire to make it to the gym 5 days a week and use Seven at home to burn extra calories! Invest in YOU and USE Seven ! 2018 is YOUR year!!!!

Great long term exercise solution!

2024-12-23

I've been using Seven for over a year and a half now and I've seen a huge difference in my work days since implementing it 3 times a day. I do a workout every 2 hours throughout my work day. For someone like me, who sits at a desk all day, it's made a huge impact on feeling healthy because it effectively breaks up my sedentary job and keeps my metabolism up. I used to be a lunch time workout guy but this only made my heart work once per day-this simply wasn't doing it for me and I frequently had issues with poor circulation in my legs etc. But now, by exercising multiple times a day with the high intensity that many of the 7 minute workouts demand, I feel much more physically balanced. I'm grateful for Seven! Thank you.
