The Blackmagic Camera media tab has all the controls you need to browse or scrub clips for quick review, search and sort and view the upload status of your media.

So it’s just like using a professional digital film camera! This means you can adjust settings such as frame rate, shutter angle, white balance and ISO all in a single tap.

The heads up display, or HUD, controls have the most important camera controls such as lens selection, frame rate, shutter angle, timecode, ISO, white balance, gain and audio levels.

Plus, you can save to the files folder on the phone, send it to Blackmagic Cloud Storage via Blackmagic Cloud or manually choose which clips to upload to a project library.

Access your media from Blackmagic Camera’s all clips folder by choosing the Media button to see the thumbnails for each clip you have stored.

Best of all, recording to Blackmagic Cloud allows you to get your footage to the newsroom or post production studio in minutes.

You can adjust settings such as exposure by touching the ISO indicator, or you can change the audio levels simply by touching the audio meters.

You get the same intuitive and user friendly interface as Blackmagic Design’s award winning cameras.

Nicely integrated, but potentially flawed

Initially playback of clips recorded under a display LUT worked, but now it crashes BlackmagicCamera . I have done the full reset, rebooted, moved the LUT into the correct folder manually instead of importing, changed the codec and resolution. The clips play from the photo library, albeit without the display LUT, and not using a display LUT when recording doesn’t crash BlackmagicCamera when those clips are opened in the Media page.
Looks like it’s something in the loading of the display LUT for playback of clips recorded under it causing the crash. So technically, since it looks like the LUT isn’t being burned into the file anyway, I can still output clips recorded under a display LUT as normal and just remember to not touch the Media page and reapply the LUT in Resolve.

Otherwise, BlackmagicCamera is great and I’m excited to follow further development!

A must have app for mobile filmmaking

Whether you are familiar or not with blackmagic menu systems, this is really simple to use and a lot of features packed into a free app. It’s too good! I’ve always wanted a reliable app whenever I’d want to film something with my phone. You can load luts. Nice! First thing I noticed was that when you zoom you don’t get that exposure and weird jitters when jumping from ultrawide lens, then to wide and medium as you do in the regular camera app. I can’t wait to explore the message system in BlackmagicCamera . Everything is just so clean as usual with BM products. Thank you, Blackmagic Design!

Amazing Stand-alone App!

BlackmagicCamera is incredible. The control it gives you completely transforms your iPhone camera into something usable for video. Would love to see two things come to BlackmagicCamera. One- would love to be able to plug my iPhone into my blackmagic cinema camera via usb c and use BlackmagicCamera to control and monitor my blackmagic camera. Two- would love be able to plug the focus demand into my iPhone and use that to manually control focus of my iPhone. Incredible app and can’t wait to see what they do with it.

Amazing they brought this to the iPhone and it’s free!

I’ve been a big fan of blackmagic for a while. I watched the announcement today and was blown away at this particular announcement. I’ve been wanting something new to recommend folks over Filmic pro since they changed to a subscription based service. The interface is way easier to navigate than any other app I’ve used and feels right at home as someone who uses a bmpcc4k daily.

Few things I’d love to see come to this (though it’ll have some massive hurdles to jump)
-log recording
-record to blackmagic raw format
-connection to atem product line for use of iPhones for live streaming

Those are HUGE asks to a product that is already amazing. If y’all could add those features this would be not only one of the best apps for filming on iPhone, it would be one of the best tools for filmmaking.

A powerful videography app

BlackmagicCamera is essentially a basic version of the software found on Black Magic cameras. It’s well integrated and works well with iPhone camera features, allowing you to have more control over normally restrictive camera features. It adds the ability to manually control focus, have different exposure viewing modes like zebra, and even import LUTs for basic color grading. A must have for anyone who wants to try out doing video on an iPhone.

Next Level

Here’s the deal. BMD for years has closed a gap any other company just wasn’t interested in closing. And it wasn’t a fluke. It’s been for a crazy long time. Continual support. Continual innovation. I run a 12 old switcher among 5 new ones I own. And the company that made that accessible for me to start, is offering a standout app…free. It looks awesome, it “feels” real. Like their cameras. Honestly, thanks guys. Thanks for pushing what can be. It’s honest, and it’s quality and there’s not a ton of that.

Blackmagic > Filmic

No subscriptions, no paid app that suddenly gets discontinued in favor of the new pricing model, no “you can’t use BlackmagicCamera because you’re trying to shoot in a location off the grid, and we can’t check your subscription.”, better UI.

Blackmagic > Filmic

By

I like it so far

If BlackmagicCamera keeps getting supported and doesn’t start getting laggy I’m going to really love BlackmagicCamera so far really nice I use davinci resolve so when I heard they made BlackmagicCamera I was so curious and glad I downloaded it

By

Goodbye Filmic Pro

Why subscribe? Solid beginning from a solid company. The price is right, of course, but the features are robust enough to get started. Adding a remote app and other features (record multiple lens lengths at once please) will be nice add ons. Recording horizontal while holding vertical is a great feature.

By

Amazing

I cant believe you created an app with all this features for free. Absolutely amazing experience just open up BlackmagicCamera and shoot, no ads, no pop ups, no subscription , no locked features.
Thank you blackmagic this is the best camera app in iphone
Few suggestions for future update:
1- is it possible to have focus peeking while recording?
2-add defaults luts to give videos a blackmagic camera look
3- sharpness control setting to disable/reduce iphone sharpening

By

Great App with Accessibility Problems

This is a great camera app, which offers a lot of professional features for free. Really free. Other developers lock them behind a subscription. The only problem I have is that Blackmagic Camera doesn't well when Display Zoom is set to Larger Text on an iPhone SE 3.

By

Pretty good!

Like an actual Blackmagic camera, the menus are easy to navigate. Very good app for FREE! One issue - I’m a moron, so bear with me, after changing ISO, I can’t seem to get it back to Auto ISO🤷🏻‍♂️ There is no Auto button like other settings

By

Looks great

Haven’t used a ton yet, but just getting ready to delve into YouTubery and I think this is going to help tremendously. Will report back when I gain some experience w it. Mos def looks promising!

By

Display Zoom issues

This is a great app, but unfortunately the layout isn’t correct on iPhones with Display Zoom enabled. UI elements are off center, timecode is overlapping controls, etc. thank you for the nice app though, the recording options are nice.

By

Incredible!

There are so many features packed into this one app it’s insane! This is BlackmagicCamera we have wanted for years. I have a little glitch with auto exposure and I wish there was more options for codecs like BMRaw or ProResRaw but overall BMD killed it!

By

Tons of features but a bit buggy

I feel like the stabilization tends to be a little buggy on different modes. Moreover, comapared to the default camera, I don’t think it produces upto the mark quality footages.

By

I like it

Saw an article that this came out. Have used Blackmagic products since forever and they make great stuff.

Took all of 1 minute to fall in love with this.

By

Great Quality and Control

I love the controls with BlackmagicCamera. The quality of the output is great and I will definitely use this going forward!

By

Love it

Please add Apple Watch support to start and stop and preview the shot on the watch. It would make it even more amazing to film yourself solo.

By

Big improvement over Filmic Pro!

Thank you Blackmagic. I highly recommend BlackmagicCamera to all aspiring filmmakers.

By

First version feels polished

For a first iteration of an app, this seems incredibly stable, robust with features, and easy to use. Having built in luts day one is awesome, so many exposure tools, great codec options, good color, and the list goes on. Amazing work Blackmagic team! I only have 4 criticisms (or more like recommendations). My first criticism is I wish there was a way to tap to focus without also turning on auto exposure. Its terrible when you have everything locked in, then you tap to focus and now your exposure is messed up. Second criticism is that it uses a histogram for exposure. I wish I could change that to a wave form. Wave form is more useful as a quick reference when exposing the whole frame and find myself relying less and less on histograms.
My last request is I hope we get a 10bit log codec for older iPhones (the 14 can handle a 10bit log file proven by other apps). Would be nice to push the colors a bit more and see if we could squeeze a bit more dynamic range out of the iPhone sensor. Overall, amazing app so far and I’m excited to see updates pushed out in the future. I cannot imagine filmic pro being happy about BlackmagicCamera not only being free, but being better in many ways. Considering the filmic app is a subscription (an expensive one at that), many users will be jumping to this immediately.

I love this app BUT

I really love BlackmagicCamera and I love the direction blackmagic is going with it. But for my personal use, I really wish when you’re in the cloud dashboard and you delete media from the cloud, I wish you could choose where it deletes from. Right now it deletes on my computer and on the cloud, but not on the camera I recorded it from. I wish it was backwards where it deleted it from the camera, and the cloud kept it on the computer that I’m editing on, it’d be nice if you had the option to choose which locations media deleted from when you delete media. But other than that I’m really loving BlackmagicCamera and I’m excited to see where it goes.

By

Superb

I have other iphone apps for the camera that I spent money on and this one bests them both in terms of ease of use and overall design. It has taken over as my choice for control of my iphone camera.

I own several BM PCC's and have been a devoted follower since they introduced the first one. BlackmagicCamera follows in their tradition of excellence.

By

Great app, needs to improve autofocus

I am a great fan of Black Magic for giving us the DaVinci Resolve. Now giving us this free iPhone app which overtime will be on par with Filmic Pro and Cinema P3 pro camera. I downloaded and tested it. In addition to other suggestions in other reviews, I noticed that when I changed from 24 fps to 60 fps that there is a delay in autofocus while you move the camera around. Autofocus is not continuous. I’m sure that will change soon. Great app nevertheless.

By

THE BEST CAMERA APP OUT

if you want to control your phone's camera like a DSLR/Mirrorless/Cinema camera this is BlackmagicCamera for you and if you've used or have any black magic gear you already know how to use it. Its the exact same interface. I love it and all the options available & its free! Bye filmic pro!

By

Easy to Recommend

Great interface with almost everything I’m looking for in a manual video app! Filmic Pro made a huge mistake moving to a subscription model, the fact that this is free puts them to shame.

#1 request would be for a log color profile.

#2 request would be support for Blackmagic Raw recording but I’m almost certain that’s a hardware limitation.

Very interested to see what might be made possible with the external recording capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro

By

Perfect for iPhone 15 Pro

I attached an SD card reader, and one of my faster, SD cards to the phone and used BlackmagicCamera to record 4k ProRes 422 with Apple log, and a display LUT I loaded in, without a single problem. It was glorious. The image is extremely good looking and on wide shots or ECU could easily cut in with cinema cameras. I’m blown away. While Apple does allow pro as recording in their native app, it is only progress 422HQ, which takes up tons of space. Blackmagic lets you set that lower to be more reasonable. You can even record 4k/60 ProRes 422 to an SD card. And BlackmagicCamera is free. Wow.

By

Love it!

So much better and more user-friendly than all the other iPhone apps I’ve tried. The one thing I would ask to add is a way to start and stop the camera remotely. I am shooting from my car today and would like to be able to start and stop either from my, Apple Watch or iPad. Right now I’m recording lots of extra footage so I don’t have to safely stop the car to start and stop the phone. I guess that’s pretty nitpicky. :-)
This camera app is awesome.

Can’t figure out how to enable LOG on my 15 Pro Max

I just received my new iPhone today but don’t see any setting to enable LOG recording, just SDR & HDR, but hopefully now that the phones are out Blackmagic will address this. Also there’s a big bonus to using BlackmagicCamera if you want to record 60 fps ProRes, as unlike using the stock camera app, this allows for 60 fps ProRes internally up to ProRes 4444!

By

Apple—take notes!

God bless BMD. THANK YOU. I downloaded this when it came out and had fun with it but didn’t realize till later that the BEST area (for me) that it shines is within the codec!

Shooting video via Apple’s camera results in nearly ungradable footage… one has to interpret and modify the colorspace, try to use gamma compensation LUTs, etc. and HOLY COW… footage shot via BlackmagicCamera JUST WORKS!!! WOOOHH!

By

Amazing Out of the Gate w 2 notes

This is phenomenal. Download it. But there’s a couple issues with advanced operations.

For the Naming Convention, the user needs to be able to set the camera number or letter, and that should be included in the file name when choosing BlackMagic Convention. Shooting from two phones with two accounts and uploading to Resolve results in both sets of footage having nearly identical file names, and they’re both labeled as A cam.

Also, the storage indicator is very confusing and seems inaccurate.

But overall, this is BlackmagicCamera our production has been waiting for.

Get serious…

If your serious about video and TIRED of Adob charging month fees for very little or maintenance updates, welcome to BlackMagic! DaVinci is a serious contender for you to consider, along with FinalCut Pro! I have NOT fully used BlackmagicCamera but have used DaVinci and even the free version can help you to get to pro level editing for free! The fact that BlackmagicCamera is free, shows that BlackMagic is serious about you and your needs, as they want you to become a Pro and later, AFTER you making money to invest in their Pro level services/products!

Give this camera app a try and see how amazing the folks at BlackMagic are!!

Not a paid review but a FREE DiVinci user!!

By

Finally. Shoot in portrait mode!

I have large hands and always manage to block the lens. This is the only camera app I know of that lets you get a solid grip on the phone and still work the controls without blocking the lens.

Much more discrete as well.

By

HDMI out needs work.

HDMI output has been very hit or miss for me on multiple monitors and cables. Most of the time I just get a black output but I know the cable is working because the rest of iOS will mirror to the display. Toggling the HDMI Clean Feed setting seems to have no impact at all. It would be nice if we could just mirror what is on the display with our waveform, settings, etc.

Otherwise BlackmagicCamera is great but HDMI out is a very big feature for me that in its current state isn’t very usable.

So far so good

The ability to adjust ISO and white balance is what convinced me I needed to try BlackmagicCamera. I make mostly small videos with me in the shot talking as well as do a video podcast with a few friends. My white balance would shift between warm and cool at times with the native iPhone app. In iOS 17 they now have the ability to lock white balance. But I was noticing the images were sometimes a little grainy when I would shoot in my “home studio”. The ISO was always too high trying to shoot the low light stuff. Between my background lights, key lights and full light the native iPhone camera wasn’t producing the best results. Now lowering ISO and adjusting my lighting afterwards made a huge improvement. The other thing that almost had me deleting BlackmagicCamera was the audio seemed extremely low when I was using my USB microphone. I was turning up the gain on my microphone way higher than I had needed to do before. Just figured out tonight that if you tap on the audio meter, gain control pops up inside BlackmagicCamera to make adjustments. It starts off at the lowest level and you can raise it from there. Pretty sure when using the native iPhone app it just comes through at full gain preset.

Fix the bugs

Got BlackmagicCamera to be able to shoot Apple LOG in H.265 which has been great. But let us lock BlackmagicCamera in landscape mode! I like to keep my phone rotation locked when using it, which makes me unable to shoot full landscape in the blackmagic app. I would love to open BlackmagicCamera and have it immediately be landscape, should be as simple as a setting toggle. This would be perfect with mapping BlackmagicCamera to the action button, and immediately start shooting pro video at any given moment. Also I’ve found that shooting apple log in h.265 doesn’t work when restarting BlackmagicCamera , and you have to switch to ProRes and switch back for it to work which is quite annoying. This happens when switching between lenses too. Kills the momentum when you want to capture a quick moment and need to readjust settings every single time.

Blackmagic continues to deliver

Blackmagic’s smart business practice to provide to all customers high level products without searching for opportunities to greedily rip you off is what has made me gravitate to this company and its products, recommending it left and right. BlackmagicCamera is proof of that. It is professional and very well done, and provides all that is needed to grow professionally without the gotchas all other companies do, providing pieces and to grab you in a subscription or something, which at the end causes me to distrust them. This is why I use Davinci Resolve, their AV switchers and now looking to invest more.
Blackmagic… Thank you!!

Watch out this is better than Filmic Pro

- The controls on filmic pro are tiny and annoying to adjust. This one does it correctly, it is easy to adjust settings.
- It allows you to record to external media unlike filmic pro. And it allows this with any format not just ProRes like the default camera app.
- It lets you record wide screen video without having to turn your phone sideways.
- BTW they’ve unknowingly allowed you to record ProRes on iPad mini 6. You’re not supposed to be able to do this on non-pro models, Apple uses ProRes to segment their products but BlackmagicCamera lets you do it anyways.

Good App But Needs work

This is a awesome and great camera app however there is a lot features that are missing from it
1. Torch light on camera for recording
2. Paused and Resume for easy editing
3. Anti shaking (to prevent shaking during the recording session
3. video stabilization.
4. extended cinematic. Mode
5. Saved each feature setting to prevent app from resetting them all.
6. macro mode. For video and photos
7. 4K pro res recording in 60 FPS and saved videos to iPhone photos library
512Gb/1Tb required only
8. Set recording duration for 1min 2 min 5 min 10 min , 1 hr 2hr 4hr 8 hr 10 hr and unlimited recording
9. Control audio gain adjustment for studio recording
10. Stop recording when battery indicator shows low battery at 5% battery life.
11. Surround sound recording
12. vocal sound effect. For recording

Please consider adding all these features in the upcoming updates thanks 😊 waiting to hear back from you immediately

Blackmagic is the GOAT

SO relieved I have a better camera app option outside of Filmic Pro, after they sold out and got turned into a soulless cash grab subscription service 🙃

Blackmagic is our savior! Not only much better.. but FREE?!

Such a relief Blackmagic is a company that is making consumer-first decisions. DaVinci Resolve is not only an amazing piece of software, but it’s reasonably priced and not a subscription service! I’ll happily continue to throw money at them as long as they continue this trend. Thanks Blackmagic!

By

Great start

BlackmagicCamera is a great start and definitely heading in the right direction. The scopes and exposure tools need a lot of work yet however.

Apple log appears to be very bright and currently both the false color and zebras in BlackmagicCamera which only go down to 75% don’t really work for working with the new Apple log video. Shooting log video on the new iPhones is pretty much an auto take what you get sort of thing right now.

BlackmagicCamera needs better scopes, zebras that can be used down to 50% at least and adjustable false color values.

I would also like to see a way to force a certain shutter speed but allow auto adjusting of the ISO. For those moments we want to lock in the look of a certain shutter speed.

For now I use my light meter to help dial in a manual exposure but we really need better tools to manually expose Apple log right in BlackmagicCamera .

When We Needed a Hero, BlackMagic to the Rescue

Basically exactly what we iPhone video people needed, after that other app (that shall not be named) went to a subscription model despite even for those that had paid in.

Incredibly smooth and refined initial launch iteration for the BlackMagic Camera app too!

Just give me wave forms and 10bit on my iPhone 13, and it’s basically the perfect iPhone videographers app.

By

Interface is Cutoff on iPhone 12

BlackmagicCamera is pretty much flawless. As someone who have bought other cameras apps like beast cam and Moment, I’m kinda mad I did because of how good BlackmagicCamera is and it’s free. But there is one huge problem, the Ui is cutoff on iPhone 12. It’s shifted a bit to the right and I don’t see everything how it’s suppose to be seen. If that wasn’t a problem, BlackmagicCamera is basically a 5 stars.

My new favorite camera app!

For years I used FiLMiC Pro because it got me much better results than the default camera app. These days the default camera app does a great job and so I couldn’t justify the annual sub for FiLMiC as I don’t really use the advanced features. Then a friend told me about BlackmagicCamera. Being free, there's absolutely no reason not to use it. Advanced features if you want them and it just feels good. Pretty intuitive.

So far there’s only 2 minor things I miss from FiLMiC, both from the Media page. The ability to hold down the “Select” button to quickly select all, and the horizontal list view that showed a thumbnail on the left and video info on the right, as opposed to the grid view of BlackmagicCamera. I have already used DaVinci Resolve as my editor for years so no surprise that this is a great app.

I also wish there a full manual somewhere but I haven’t found one.

Great App! Just Needs Apple Watch Remote App

Great iPhone app. Needs a dedicated apple watch camera remote app like the standard iPhone camera has so that you monitor and remotely stsrt/stop recording of the camera from an apple watch when your iphone is on a boom/jib arm or you are self recording. Currently I have to switch back to the default camera just to use apple watch as a camera remote. It's also cumbersome to turn on/off false color. Ideally you could select a preferred exposure tool and have it be one press to toggle it on/off. Right now it takes 3 taps to turn false color (for example on/off which is too slow for real world use. This last one is more of a wish list item but it would be great in settings to be able to set a base iso and then adjust exposure based on stops instead of micro adjustments of iso for a faster exposure setting workflow. I will adjust rating to 5 stars once there is a functional apple watch companion remote app and it's easier to turn false color on/off.

By

Great app but…

Everything I’ve been looking for, however…be careful with the Timelapse recording setting. There is zero indication in the viewfinder when that setting has been toggled. Shot a Timelapse sequence and then an hour later shot some more clips in a location I can’t return to…and they were all in Timelapse mode, so useless. I love everything BlackmagicCamera can do but not having an indication in the viewfinder when you are recording a Timelapse is a major overlook that I’m hoping will be a quick fix. How your listening Blackmagic and thanks for the effort on BlackmagicCamera so far. (Also, every once in awhile the top menu seems to be unresponsive in the media tab.

Issues with H.265 files shot in Apple Log

Great app in general. Being able to shoot in Apple Log with smaller file sizes is great. BlackmagicCamera is easy to use once you learn the layout. Only issue I’ve come across is shooting in 4k Apple Log H.265. The files aren’t recognized by my PC and resolve only sees it as an audio file. The proxy version in 1080p H.265 works fine. Just can’t open the 4k files. I’ve tried reinstalling my HEVC codecs to no avail. Other H.265 4k videos I’ve downloaded online work fine on my PC so I believe it has something to do with the videos coming out of BlackmagicCamera . Hope it gets resolved soon.

Almost perfect

Everything else has been said already but there’s one single feature that could make this perfect and render filmic completely obsolete. That would be having the ability to film in one frame rate but have the file saved already re-timed/slo-mo’d - ie shoot a 2 second 60 fps clip, but the saved file is a 4 second 30 fps clip. Please add this feature!! I rely on this extensively for filming reels of home interiors for real estate. Right now Filmic is the only app that does this but BlackmagicCamera is far superior- I’d really like to switch!
Please add this!

By

Not a bad app. Just Change the zoom controls.

I love BlackmagicCamera but I would really rather have a slider for zoom controls. As a film maker who wants a dynamic shot while zooming, pressing the plus and minus buttons to zoom in is really bothersome. As much as I rather move completely away from filmic pro, the slide function for continuous zoom is really handy.

Please create a toggle mode for the zoom feature. Once that’s added, this will be my To go to when I don’t wanna lug my cameras around.

By

Promising!

Considering it’s a new app, I won’t hold it to the same standard as an aged application. BlackmagicCamera definitely shows a lot of promise, hitting some of the features I have desired control over.

I mostly wanted to throw in the features I would find valuable to add! Control over the camera light would be phenomenal. One of the big issues I encounter with Apple’s native camera app is the inability to take photos with the light on, I need to be able to see the object with the lighting before taking the photo. I take macro photography of bugs, so a sudden flash is much more likely to scare them off. My only option has been recording snippets to take photos, but I have to sacrifice a lot of quality. The light would be world changing!

Would also like to access the alt macro camera (not the .5), that would be awesome.

RIP Filmic

I never review apps, but what Blackmagic has done here is nothing short of breathtaking. All the features I loved in Filmic at an incredible price ($0), with far superior UI and way faster startup times. The market leader in iOS filmmaking camera apps, Filmic Pro, is a total gouge using a subscription monetization model with an old, janky UI and I will never be going back. The only thing I miss is the drag/lock UI for the focus and exposure which I found intuitive, but the traditional tap here works fine. I'm also a recent convert to Davinci Resolve and just love it. Thank you Blackmagic for everything you do! Love your products lots and they've enabled me to do so much.

Great camera app - with one important omission

This is a fantastic (and free!) alternative to Filmic Pro after I could no longer justify using that app. It has basically all the same controls, in perhaps an even more intuitive interface.

However, there is one important feature that Blackmagic is missing. The ability to control and monitor the camera from a separate iOS device like an iPad. This functionality is imperative when self-filming.

There is also no support for BlackmagicCamera available on the website. So the only way I can request this feature is here in a review. I hope Blackmagic is listening and implements this asap!

Could be my go to app but….

Having invested in the majority of Moment’s M series lenses I decided to purchase their app and discovered they provide corrections for their various lenses. And now that I’m replacing my M series lenses with their new T series lenses which I’m hoping will show a marked improvement in IQ. The caveat I have and why I don’t give the Blackmagic camera app a 5 star rating is there is no way to utilize the Apple Watch to control shooting HQ rear facing lens vlogging content. It appears the now defunct Filmic Pro and native camera apps support this feature. A shame as the Blackmagic camera app has the potential to be a massive game changer for mobile content creators like myself when used in conjunction with add on lenses from Moment, Sandmarc, etc. If Filmic Pro could make this work, why hasn’t Blackmagic done the same thing?

By

A fully featured cinema camera app.

BlackmagicCamera will change your phone to a reliable cinema camera, except of sensor size. It will give you full control of shutter and iso. It also unlocks full codec & resolution & gamma & color space combination, gives you perfect recording spec suitable for your next project. And it supports 1.33 and 1.55x anamorphic desqueeze and also DOF adapter, which is critical for professionals.

Also its internal and external monitoring capability is great. It supports 65 point 3d lut and also supports bake lut to video output, clean video signal output via usb-c so you can use any monitor to see apple log or hdr footage within rec709 profile.

However, few features are missing. it does not support to display waveform and vectorscope. So you need to rely only on false color to check your exposure correctly.

New Favorite

For almost 2 years, a work colleague put me onto Filmic Pro and luma fusion. I enjoyed the combo with my former iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now that I have the 15 pro max, I was going to resubscribe to filmic but couldn’t justify the $40 annual subscription. I do use the Shiftcam system and figured would just use the native camera app until I saw black magic advertised on some tech channels. Especially since it’s free, how can you go wrong. You can’t!! Just started using it today and briefly played with some setting.

CONS: I personally would like the option to only record to the the photos app not in files and and photos. Also, wish their was an option for Apple Watch to control and view video like the filmic pro app. But, it free, so can’t complain

Almost great…

BlackmagicCamera is good, certainly one of the best available and for free. How can one complain about that? BlackmagicCamera is almost professional quality but not quite. Unfortunately there are too many menus and nameless icons. Traditional professional cameras have a more clear layout, especially when it comes to key features like focus, peaking, zebra, the variables that have the most effect on the image. Instead, BMD decided to list irrelevant aspects like 4K, iris (???), and tint and bury focus, peaking and zebra behind icons and within the settings gear. If these are flipped, then BlackmagicCamera will be more professional and will gain five stars.

Suddenly stopped recording sound halfway through family vacation

I went on a 9-day family trip to 5 National Parks and used Blackmagic to record about 2 hours of raw footage. I didn’t realize until we got home that about halfway through the trip the videos did not record any sound.

Looking through the settings, the Audio Source got set to None at some point. I have no idea how it suddenly got set to None, nor did I even know a setting existed or imagine BlackmagicCamera might suddenly change a setting without warning that would make half of my trip’s footage be practically unusable. It’s a setting buried in the menus so there is no way I could have fat-fingered it while recording a video.

I’ve been using BlackmagicCamera for about six months and have recorded many videos using it, but I don’t know if I can trust BlackmagicCamera to record family videos without having to routinely play back video while in the middle of hiking or camping to test it or routinely go through all the settings and make sure they are all correct like a pilot doing a checklist before a flight each time I use BlackmagicCamera . I don’t have a habit of sitting around while on vacation watching videos I just shot that day, I need to just be able to trust that the technology works and my videos will have sound when it comes to editing. I just figured once everything is set the way I like I can just open BlackmagicCamera to quickly take a candid shot on demand. I may need to find another video recording app I can trust.

Ruins about 20% of clips

It doesn’t happen every time, but it happens too often for BlackmagicCamera to be reliable. I open BlackmagicCamera , everything seems normal, record as I would with perfect preview, then I slide the phone back in my pocket and don’t think of it again. Until I dump footage and find that at least 20% of my clips have nothing but audio and terrible blue static covering the entire screen. Some sort of glitchy kind of look. But anything that was actually being recorded is just GONE. Completely. Forever. Never going to get those moments back. I’m willing to give up a bit of picture quality, or sound quality for convenience. But a I want to do is capture the moment in front of me in the time that it happens, and BlackmagicCamera has failed time and time again at being reliable enough to do that. I tried to update, tried it again and again, but it has lost so many precious moment to me that I have no choice but to no use it ever. And at this rate, I don’t know if I will ever be able to trust it again.
