Crashes more than Chris Kreider does into Goalies

I use NHL a lot to stream games because Xfinity is way too expensive and the games aren’t in HD... But if there was any other reliable options to watch I’d probably go with that. The this app app works half of the time which is why I gave it three stars and no more. When NHL works it’s awesome, 95% of the time the stream is clear and the other 5% is just because of our internet so I can’t blame them on that. I love how it’s set up where you can see standings, League news and news about your single team! BUT... And this is a big but, IT CRASHES HALF THE TIME, I’ll think to myself, “HMMM I wonder what the scores are tonight” and these are the three things that happen... It either just won’t load, NHL will load and you’ll see the home screen for a second and then it’ll crash OR when I press to see the scores it crashes. I don’t mind having to google scores but isn’t the point of NHL to make it easier on the users to have info and entertainment easily accessible? Also like 15% of the time when we try to stream it’ll say we’re streaming the game but it’ll just show the two team logos and the this app shield in the middle and will do nothing... Again when NHL works it’s great but I find it not working A LOT

NHL RESPECT up in here

I have seen this app players fight for social causes and I have seen them express their pain and their empathy for communities of ALL backgrounds. But I have never seen them interrupt games or disrespect our national anthem. They are the only professional sport who plays in front of their fans and does not force personal political views on people who spend good money to watch their favorite teams play. I support every one of their causes no matter what, and I know they support positive energy from their fans bc this league comes to play, and win. All of that deserves 5 stars on itself BUT NHL is also very user friendly and informative especially for my home team when I am out on the road. Thank you this app for keeping it sports and thank you to the developers who make NHL possible. The behavior of the league and teams makes it really easy for me to choose the only sports app I will carry on my phone and NHL makes it super friendly and easy for me to keep!! #this app #GoAvsGo!!!

Decent App but Faulty

I love the layout of NHL , the scores section and playoff section is clean and easy to follow. I also like the addition of the videos section under latest.

My issue is with crashing. I will be reading an article and halfway through it will crash and/or send me back to the main loading page of NHL , causing me to have to scroll through and find the article and pick back up where I left off. Very frustrating. I used to be able to easily cast games and recaps to my chrome cast. I could select watch live and it would give me the live broadcast. Now if I’m trying to watch a live game (I’m an this app TV subscriber) it will start from the beginning and not let me pick up with the game live. Also, if I do stream to a device from my phone, it will crash when I’m done and I will have to uninstall and reinstall to get it to work again, which means I have to log in, select my settings and preferences again.

All in all, it is a great app for articles (even if you have to keep going back to them), videos (as long as your not streaming them) and general use. Highly recommend using NHL on any other device than mobile to utilize any video feature.

Read this, it will take 2 minutes.

To start off, I love all American sports, Like Basketball, Football, Baseball, and, of course, Hockey. I have the NBA app, NFL app, MLB app, and this this app app. Of all of these, I can safely say that this app has got my favroite set-up. It's easy to use and really worth it if you're a fan of Hockey. What I don't like is that you can't watch Hockey in NHL , you need either Bally Sports for your location, or ESPN+. I do like how they post a 4-10 minute video about all of the goals scored the previous day, and I like the standings section. Another feature I like is that it allows you to customize the Icon you have for NHL . You can either have a certian team or the this app Logo. It's really cool and easy to change.

Overall I say get NHL, it's good, easy to use, and really helpful for keeping up with scores and the "Gameflow" Feature is nice, too. Thanks for reading! Have a nice day.

Keeps me up to date

The this app app has allowed me to keep up with pro hockey even though I live in an area where the sport isn’t followed much. NHL allows me to customize what I want to be notified of for each of the five teams I follow, so if I only want to know when the Wild, Knights or Jets game begins but want scoring updates for the Penguins and Stars, I can do that. I can also listen to the live radio broadcast of any team in the league and read news stories about any team. The scores tab allows me to see what games are going on when and on what TV channel, so I can plan ahead. I have used NHL for two seasons now, and I have found it extremely useful.

Don’t buy into premium

NHL itself is great, I would have given it 5 stars until I got suckered into trying premium to watch games. They give you a warning that you’re at the mercy of blackout restrictions. Okay, I won’t be able to watch EVERY game, that’s fine. I bought a subscription and immediately canceled (literally within minutes of the purchase) because the game I wanted to watch was blacked out, despite the notifications that if I got this app premium I could be watching the game live. So I’m stuck with it for a month. All the games I’ve tried to watch so far, except for one, so that’s 1 out of 13 games that have been blacked out. What am I even paying for?
And of course, every game gives me a notification every period to watch the action live on this app premium. Every time it pops up it just angers me more. Especially when I know it’s a lie. Here’s an idea, don’t send out notifications that you could be watching the game live with premium if the game is backed out and you can’t actually be watching it live with premium.

Great game & news updates but in-app use needs work

Love this for game and news updates on my favorite teams and players (much better than the ESPN app), however the clunkiness of some features while in-app leave me frustrated. I'm no tech expert but I think it's just a lack of a little "polish".

Might sound nit-picky but main reason for me only giving three stars is the video player. If NHL is going to notify me about all these awesome videos to watch, then I feel the video player should be capable of showing them. More often than not I'm sitting, starting at a black screen, waiting for an ad to play, then again staring at a black screen, waiting for the video. There's so many apps out there capable of playing videos quickly and easily, why can't the this app app do the same? I know it's not an issue of my cellular service. Please fix the video player! 5 stars in it for you after it's fixed!

Crystal clear...commercials

If you enjoy watching Coors Light commercials repeatedly, in beautiful crystal clear HD, then this is NHL for you. If you enjoy watching this app hockey with Vaseline on aquarium glass quality video and Circe 1970’s AM radio quality audio, then this is NHL for you. It does not matter if I am streaming via 200+ Mbps WiFi, a FIOS line, or 4G/LTE, the quality of the games is awful. Come on this app, your customers are blasting you on the reviews and you fix nothing. Get your head out of your apps and come into the 21st century.

Update: this latest version reversed the update to the standings layout. You were showing the same data as the desktop site, Streak, L10, etc. Why would you go back to the previous version with less info? this app, this combined with your streaming issues is driving me nuts. I guess working on tech that already was a fan failure (going back to the puck tracker failure from last decade) and a player tracker so games look like a NASCAR race is more important that quality video streaming and a stable app. Get it together.

DO NOT BUY PREMIUM

As others have said, premium is a joke. They are very deceiving with advertising what you get with premium. When I first downloaded NHL I tried watching the game. I was prompted with a pop up that said in order to watch games LIVE I needed to upgrade to premium. I thought $20 a year was a good deal so I purchased. Then later when I tried watching the game, I watched two ads, then was prompted with another pop up saying I don’t have the right subscription and I needed this app TV in order to watch which is $25 a month. Very deceiving and I’m not even sure why premium is a thing, other than to get people to spend $20. Spent hours trying to get a refund and this app support just deferred me to Apple to get refunded. Rating 2 stars instead of 1 because NHL itself works and looks great. The this app folks really need to work on what they’re promoting because sneaky fine print ads are a good way to turn customers off.

It’s a Solid App... With a Few Flaws

I have been a long time flyers fan and I downloaded NHL to follow the team better. It allows me to do so by notifying me about scores and news articles, but there are some flaws. For example the “free games” on this app premium (which is a scam anyway) are not free for everyone. Also, sometimes when I open NHL while game is going on, it gives me a notification that I can watch a game live on this app premium. However I CANNOT ACCESS ANYTHING ON NHL until I click on the notification which sends me to a page to buy a subscription to this app premium. It’s fine if it’s a one time glitch, but it is every time. There are also some smaller things, like how stats don’t include hit leaders, but the radio feature is nice and overall it is very customizable. So 4 stars, it could be better but it does its job

Almost There

Video quality is excellent but sometimes load times are slow and NHL crashes on every device I have when loading highlights of games just concluded, particularly on the Smart TV versions.

It would also be nice if those highlight recaps provided some context before each segment as to what is going on in the game at the time, as in whether a team is on the power play, what time of which period it starts from, etc. Also, non-scoring chance related events like player injuries, fights, etc. that give provide more of the feel of the game would be appreciated.

I would also say that during live broadcasts, I’m okay watching the full complement of commercials rather than the “Commercial break in progress” screen, especially if that helps bring the price down!

More variety

I’d like to see NHL reflect more of the options offered on the desktop website. For the news section I’d love for their to be a way to filter out based on senior writers, trade deadline tracker, scouting reports, etc. There is a lot of material offered through the website that app users really cannot see. NHL also used to offer an option where you could filter videos by game recaps, goals, saves, etc. I’d love to be able to just select the type of video and just run through a bunch of them. NHL runs super well with very few bugs but for users who use NHL consistently there could be more for you to select and filter through. Other than that, it’s amazing and the layout, design and way it works is wonderful.

Long time subscriber

I have been a subscriber for 5 years and I love it. I dont experience the issues some others report. The games cast easily from my phone to my smart tv with crystal clear clarity. I travel often for work and even over cellular, games are clean and clear. Sorry for the others experiencing trouble, but I’ve never had any. The subscription works great on my apple TV as well. The game flow charts are fun to watch during games. Works great on my apple watch too. I like being able to watch any game I want (except for my home town Blue Jackets) and as a hockey junkie, I typically watch an eastern time zone game and then a western time zone game most nights.

Game flow update is really insightful feature!

I have had the this app app for almost three years, and this is perhaps the best update to NHL so far.
I also have the ESPN app to follow the NBA, and it shows real time graphs of the game flow. I was hoping that the this app app developers would add a similar feature. And my wish came true!
Although this feature is still relatively new, it offers a lot of potential. In the future, I hope the this app app developers continue to add similar statistical features to NHL for us hockey nerds out there. For instance, there should be a feature that shows where on the ice each team scored their goals.
Kudos to this app app for this awesome update! 👍

Yet another game ruined

I'm updating my review because with this latest update, I have had yet another game ruined for me. I started to play a game on my iPad that I had been watching on my AppleTV. I had intended to fast forward to where I was, but the super-effective "jump forward 30 seconds" button wasn't showing up. (don't even get me started on their horrible imitation of "VCR controls". Yes, I know I said "imitation" instead of "implementation." A VCR has a fast forward button, not a "jump ahead 30 seconds" button.)

Anyway, I stopped the game to try again, and when it started to play, I was greeted with a banner across the top of the video (at the BEGINNING of the game) telling me that the 3-on-3 overtime was being sponsored by EA Sports this app '18. Great. I've seen up to the middle of the second, but now I know regulation will end in a tie. Thanks, this app. I'm so glad I pay $112 a year to have games ruined. Come on, this app, get your act together.

Premium is a Joke

Good app, premium is terrible. When I bought a year subscription it told me it would black out 3 teams. I figured, why not? I can watch all the hockey I want and catch my team games after 48 hours if I want to see the game play.

Well, what they mean is these three teams will always be blacked out for you. If a game is showing on a channel in your area, well that gets blacked out too. Oh and those 3 teams, it’s actually 5 that are blacked out. The real kicker is, 3 of the 5 teams ARE NEVER SHOWN IN MY AREA!

If you can black out other games because a channel in my area is showing the game, then you can show me the teams that are not shown in my area. Get the cable networks out of your pocket this app. You are letting them ruin the sport for your fans.

PLEASE READ PLEASE

Ok so I know you can change NHL icon and I’ve done that and changed it to the sharks but it’s different than all the rest. I wish that you would change it to look like all the others where it would be the sharks logo and have a teal background rather that the white and the this app on top. I don’t know why this bugs me but it does. Please fix this in the next update. Other than that I really enjoy NHL. It gives me lots of stats and other thing other apps don’t. I like that when my team scores it plays their goal horn for a notification. It’s really cool. This is a really great app and nice to use for when I want to see the latest hockey news and stuff. GO SHARKS!!!!!!!

-Sharks fan 🦈🦈🦈🦈

Game recaps buried

As has typically been the case, versions other than the iPad version allow the user to access Game Recaps with one click after selecting game under “Scores.” Better yet, those versions allow the user to go to Videos and then watch a series of Game Recaps without taking any action after clicking the first desired Game Recap. For some bizarre reason, the iPad version has eliminated the Game Recaps under the Videos section and, instead, Game Recaps available only if the user selects a game and then scrolls all the way through the Gamecenter write up to see the Recap vid at the bottom (after seeing who has done what in the narrative and individual play vid captions). The Game Recaps have to be one of the most popular features. Why make them hard to get to?

Awful app

I’m a massive this app fan who for some reason purchases the full access every year but this may just be the last. NHL is a train wreck. It takes sometimes 2 minutes just for NHL to load. Once it finally opens you may or may not be automatically logged out for some reason but good luck trying to log in because sometimes sometimes when you do it will say you just logged out so you have to try about 3 more times. If you’re lucky enough to get past that good luck trying to touch those millimeter wide play buttons to watch any goal highlights. If you used to use NHL on ps4/xbox you know how unbearable that experience was. But on mobile it’s not as bad but still glitchy and way too spotty. Whoever makes NHL needs to maybe start using it on a regular basis and fix the horrible bugs that have been in it for a long time.

Naples FL Blues fan

I am a lifelong St. Louisan and Blues fan. At the age of 55, I retired to Naples FL. Blues TV coverage is hard to get down here, so I have reverted to my childhood days when only a handful of games were on TV in the 70’s, I follow the Blues on radio. I used to love hearing Dan Kelly call the Blues games, I wish his son John was on the radio broadcast rather than TV but Kirbs calls a good game.

So on to the review, this site is excellent at keeping me up on all Blues news and info. I also enjoy being able to see all the game recaps to visualize that which I didn’t get to see during the radio
broadcast. I highly recommend NHL to every Blues fan!

Drastic improvements

Original Review: This year they dropped support for ps3 and Xbox 360. Due to this I was given the opportunity to experience how terrible using NHL to watch a replay is. No period start selection. Absolutely garbage scrubbing controls. The -10 sec button often reverts back to the beginning of the game. The one positive is the streaming feed has less jumps and quality drops than the console apps had during live games.

Almost forgot the constant notifications telling you if you want to see the notification content to turn off “hide scores”. How about not sending score notifications instead when hide scores is set?

Update: The casting video player is fantastic. 10 second buttons have been replaced with 30 second buttons that actually work. The slider is much smoother and loads the video perfectly and at the correct time that is showing when you lift your finger up. Would still love to see the addition of the period start selection and ceasing score notifications when scores are turned off but I’m very happy with the recent changes.

Video playback issues

In general, NHL is great. BUT. It's almost impossible to watch a game when the resolution drops to the point of looking like a distant video through a windshield on a rainy day for several minutes at a time, the audio cuts in and out entirely, and sometimes just freezes indefinitely until NHL is force closed.

It would be great to see a 15 second skip button option since the 30 second skip passes over the whistle to faceoff game time pause most of the time.

Last but not least, if trying to watch a game from behind, be aware that sometimes the skip feature forwards to live, so spoilers aren't out of the question.

Major Improvements Needed

There seems to be no clear way to edit account information. No clear way to delete an account. Trying to search for a league in the bracket challenge doesn’t work. You type in the league name that definitely exists and after clicking search it goes right back to the screen you were on. The “share” button does nothing when trying to share through email. You can’t invite anyone once you create the league, only when creating it. If you forgot someone’s email the oops! Looks like they have to navigate through like 150 pages of leagues if you didn’t make your league starting with the letter A or Z. Two members of my league for some reason have no name! Just blank slots. Can’t fix it because there’s no way to do so! Please look into these issues

Issues Every Year, No Customer Service

I’ve been paying for the nhltv subscription for years and it’s the same awful experience every year. No matter which device I’m streaming a game on with everything up to date and wifi in top shape, game streams are garbage.

It’s the same every season, especially in the first month where it’s unwatchable. I have screenshots of my “customer service” experience for 4 straight years where they can’t do anything about NHL reverting alert settings to default constantly and the game streams being mostly unwatchable.

If you pay for this service you’ll get real familiar with all the error codes very quickly, but don’t expect customer service to be on the same page as you even once. They’ll have you do basic troubleshooting over and over again until you can’t stand it anymore while offering no sort of discount or refund for this lackluster and frustrating experience.

No wonder the this app can’t compete with the other major sports leagues, it’s own app and subscription service can’t even provide a reliable source for fans to watch games or get news.

If you have another service available to you to watch out of market games that isn’t pirating, I would highly recommend going that route.

Almost Infuriating

NHL is designed well and it helps me keep up-to-date with the standings and games for my favorite teams - as well as the rest of them. The notification on NHL are what make it unbearable. Despite the number of times I have uninstalled and reinstalled NHL , every time being particularly careful to update the settings, I still can’t avoid getting 20 spurious “news” notifications a day. You have the ability to subscribe to the news - for the entire league as well as individual teams - which presumably add to the number of notifications that you can’t turn off. I will almost certainly turn notifications off for the entire app, even though I still want to the scoring updates for the teams that matter to me. Figure it out this app.
