Quiztones: EQ Ear Training Reviews

It’s a good concept, but it is not fully accessible for blind users.
It does not describe what the buttons are, it does not let you choose an answer, it does not let you choose a song from your library, it doesn’t even read you what the question is.
It’s kind of confusing to navigate as well.
Please make it accessible, if not give me my money back!
And I’ll go ahead and let other blind users not to purchase Quiztones.

I would definitely change my review if it gets updated and becomes accessible.

So phones dont have some of these tested hz ranges. So it will be impossible to decipher some, Im a mixing/mastering engineer and see a bunch of potential with Quiztones but the pay wall is egregious and I found myself questioning if the quizzes were even accurate. My advice to learn this stuff is just do, I got excited when I saw Quiztones but in the end it was snake oil. I do hope the developer refines this and reconsiders the pay wall. Maybe put everything the user NEEDS and then add goodies on top of it.

One of the sh…ty new apps that set up a payment trap inside. Most content is locked. If you unlock, you are taking a subscription with their so called pro level. Whatever it is, no need for that. Deleted after downloading.

It’s a great tool but charging $15 monthly is a bit ridiculous. Would happily pay $20 once for everything or a few dollars here and there for certain quizzes or functionalities. Currently the pricing model is all or nothing in regards to features. I would even tolerate ads, just not $15 a month.

I don’t know what it is but I seriously could not hear the 10db boost in any of the quizzes. And I’m not crazy because I took the same piece of music and went to logic and boosted the same frequency up by 10 dB and it was an OBVIOUS boost but in Quiztones the EQ boost was not there. If this is a bug then please fix it soon because I’m wasting my money.

Edit:

I didn’t realize you had to toggle the on and off switch. You know if you could put that in as a message before the quiz started that would be great.

At first I didn't like Quiztones, but then I dove into all the training games and changed my rating. The sine wave frequency training isn't the best, but what I found very useful is the eq section: three different levels for various instruments and a section for your own music! There's free stuff online out there, so the $7.99 is a bit much.

MAKE IT COMPETITIVE! I’m telling you, you will definitely get more longevity out of it if the tests tell you how you did compared to other people. Like a leaderboard, maybe just for the most popular tests! I know the competitive side of everyone will want to better their scores, making themselves listen better in the long run, also making them use Quiztones more! WIN WIN!

I think for what they charge, if they had another mode for testing, or another module or two to practice other aspects of production-focused ear-training, that this would be a much more bang-for-your-buck app. It’s certainly effective at getting you to practice hearing pitch in Hz, boosting, and EQ, but key features like panning, distortion, reverb, chorus and more are missing from this. I know there are platforms, like SoundGym, that charge more for all the music ear training variety you could want, but I think that, even for just a bit more, they could have at least a SOLID variety of content that’s not too shabby and would let me practice on key things like basic sound effects. If there’s an expansion for Quiztones that I missed, do let me know!

I would have given it five stars, if there have been an autoplay next option. This would give you the opportunity to take your eyes off the screen, so that you make your first guess from what you hear, not from what you see as available choices.

Why won’t Quiztones work in landscape on iPad? And the layout of quizzes seems counterproductive. Start with easy on top and work down to more difficult?

A few other things make it seem very unpolished for such an established app.

If there was an option to have an upgrade path to both the OS X and iOS version, Quiztones would be 5 stars and more. Also a tone generator would be awesome, especially if there were multiple waveforms.

I love Quiztones - it’s simple and straightforward. I’d suggest being able to select certain FQs to practice instead of them all.

Keep your ears "in shape" (functionally not aesthetically). If you don't use it you lose it.

This had helped me a LOT. Not only can I determine frequency and gain changes much more easily after using it, I'm able to hear many suble differences in sound qualities that I couldn't before. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it would probably cut the time it takes to train your ears if it had an option to let the exercise keep playing until you tell it to go on to the next one. That way, you could hear the difference after you've already guessed it. That would really help to learn the differences more easily. The way it is now, it stops playing as soon as you guys correctly, so you don't get a chance to memorize how a particular change sounds. That's a pretty big oversight IMO.

I love the fact that I can stream Quiztones to my car stereo and study various eq choices to improve my mixes. I make final decisions in the car for my mixes. Quiztones helps me better understand what those decisions will sound like. Definitely worth it!

I like Quiztones a lot so far. It is not too expensive & it helps with what it is supposed to. I do think that adding more features such as gamifying the experience & being able to keep track of your progress would add a lot of value to Quiztones . Also it would be nice if there was some type of training or description for each frequency that would help me & others identity the different characteristics of different frequencies to know exactly what to listen for

I've owned Quiztones for a few years now. Always loved it. It has helped immensely with my frequency range identification for both instruments in mixing, as well as finding feedback frequencies while mixing for live sound.

Phenomenal app, highly recommend it. I own the iOS and desktop version. Totally worth it.

I’m a bit of a workaholic, and blind, audio engineer. This is like the holy grail of an iOS game for me. It’s simultaneously fun and productive. I can play on the go to have better ideas of what I’m hearing on my phone for later correction in Pro Tools, or plug into one of my monitor sets at home to test my instinct... and it’s a game, with categories and scores. Much respect ✌️

I’m currently in school taking recording classes and we are supposed to be using the Golden Ears training program to study frequencies etc. That program is way too expensive for me and I can’t book studio time just to practice this. Quiztones has been invaluable for identifying frequencies and pink noise/music EQ cut and boosts. Super happy with my purchase!

I am definitely making progress, but I wish it kept track of my scores so I could see my improvement over time. I feel like that would be really motivating. Is that really difficult to implement?

Quiztones is super easy to navigate and understand and so helpful with ear training. Definitely worth it for the inexpensive annual membership!

My audio engineer professor recommended Quiztones to help us understand frequencies better. It’s helped so much!!!!!
