Moog failed to keep all up to date.

2022-05-23

I used to love Filtatron, Iโ€™ve made a lot of cool presets and itโ€™s previously been easy to use/conductive for quick and simple creativity, however, since updating to iOS 13 Filtatron does not work. You can no longer import samples. Filtatron is no longer compatible with current iOS and Moog has made ok effort to offer an update. Filtatron is now useless.

Never thought I would leave such a negative review of an app I once loved so much... the developer has let this one die.

Not for iPhone

2022-06-24

Rotary controls extremely hard to use. Suggest Moog use rotary image as seletor and put a slider at the side. As it is, I wash I had not wasted my time and money on it.

....

2022-07-25

just needed a simple filter, doesnโ€™t let me take the lfo out waste of money. also when the filter of the mix is on it kills the highs of the mix, the filter is also very weak. was using this through my dj mixer with an irig.

Great potential but crashes on preset tab for iPad 2 running latest IOS update

2022-08-26

I purchased Filtatron based on the rave reviews for my iPad 2 which is running the latest version of IOS. My initial reaction was very positive because I loved the ability to create sounds and the old school feel of the interface to the program. However, my opinion changed after I tried to access the preset tab. The application immediately crashed. So, what this means is that whatever cool presets might be there or whatever cool sound I want to save and use as a preset I cannot. Effectively, this makes this program fun but unuseable to me. I tried to get on the developer site to send a bug report but there is no way to do that which is extremely disappointing. They don't even list the correct version of their own program on the web site.

Buy it if you want a fun toy with potential that you can hope will get fixed or if you never care about presets.

Sound output

2022-09-27

First of all I thought I must be a real dope, because I could not figure out how to make any sound at all. I read the manual over and over but it was only when I stumbled upon someone's post that said the sound is only designed for headphones that I was able to use it. I have a 2G iphone and it puts out zero sound without the headphones. My wife's 3G puts out sound via the "hold it up to your ear while having a phone conversation" speak and the headphone jack of course. Here's the thing... I want to send the sound to my external audio system but even with an iphone headphone jack adapter, connecting in a stereo 3.5mm plug transmits zero sound to my amp. With the Bebot app I can plug into the headphone jack and send the output to my audio system just fine. But when I exit Bebot and start this app (making absolutely no hardware configuration changes) there is no. The programers have obviously chosen to route the audio to the four segmented headphone plug in a way that just does not work with a three segmented audio plug.
Please fix this ridiculous issue!!!! As for this app Support... good luck.

Needs to be an Audio Unit now

Im a lifelong Moog fan, so many classics songs were created using Moog synths and hardware and Iโ€™m a fan of all their iOS apps, this and Animoog were insta buys and I loved them, but at the time au didnโ€™t exist on the IPad, but now it does and its time to bring both up to the present iOS music state. I use Model 15 and Model D all the time and would love to bring Animoog this app back into my workflow back into my workflow, especially Animoog but itโ€™s not going to happen until they get updated to auv3 support. Iโ€™d give this 5 stars if it were an au.

What is it?

2022-11-29

I have really tried with Filtatron. As far as I tell itโ€™s an oscillator with delay and a sample player that has moog branding. I guess if you want a delay effect buy it ?

Cool, but...

Just been recording loops with other apps (nanostudio, sunrizer, etc.) and copy/paste into this app. All is good. A few annoyances: 1) difficult to set bpm, seems to get stuck when sliding in the value, goes over or too short... takes 30 seconds to get it right sometimes, should take 2 seconds. 2) the "mod" control (basically a sin wave lfo) on the delay module has no sync option. 3) I wish all knobs displayed a value when turned. Knob markers don't seem to align exactly (example: sample playback speed, is it at .5 or .55, pretty important when trying to match and sync bpm between loops and apps and all that). Sounds neat, though... 3.5 stars for how I use it. Stable on new iPod touch.

one of the best music apps

2023-01-31

This is a lot of fun and i've used to make some pretty cool samples as well that i can play in the DAW... but two suggested changes. The pitchlock feature is great - but the people at Moog should change to just successive buttons for each step of the chromatic scale rather than piano keys... the keys are confusing because they don't tie to the actual piano notes. if it would display the pitch on a button instead, that would be a huge improvement. The other is that you've got a lot of wasted real estate at the bottom of the keys (at least on an ipad), and it sure would be nice to have another octave... i think you would still have plenty of room to retain expression over the loudness of each individual note, and could play a wider range of notes.

1st synth app I bought, and still the best!

2023-03-04

I reviewed this app right after I bought it years ago and had only an iPod 4th gen touch.
Since then I've bought almost every analog modeled audio app out there. From Animoog (with the MIDI extras) Sunrizer, to THOR and iVCS and others ... Audiobus addition is fantastic.
I still use this app even though I've got tons of other audio apps.
I see reviews where the user doesn't understand how to force quit a app in iOS - or are upset that it's not in RETINA resolution ... Uhhh, this is an audio app with 48bit res and a compact app at that. Every complaint I've seen seems beside the point and have very little time for experimenting. Which is what all this is about, right? Not much has chanfpged from the first time I plugged an iRig in from my mixer's headphone/effects out to capture the signal from ANYTHING OFF OF MY iMac. Great app updates aren't important here - unless they re-vamp the whole app. 5 โญ๏ธs

Really Exciting!

2023-04-02

What a cool sound design tool. Unlike most apps that use knobs, these knobs are easy to use and a pleasure to play with. The parameters are very user friendly, and in no time you will be making awesome sounds that will make you smile. Really intuitive and even you don't know the technical terms for things you will quickly have fun! Reminds me of when I first starting tweaking my MiniMoog way back when and I would play it just by feel..... It would be great to implement the file sharing functionality within the itunes app. It would be awesome also to put integrate some kind of MorphWiz grid or even just a keyboard (second choice!). I love the morphable LFO shapes. Good job guys!

Whoa

I owned a MiniMoog rev. D back in the late 70's/early 80's. It is one of two things I have always regretted selling. While this does not replace the old Moog, it's a fabulous tool for 5 bucks. I was up and running in under 5 minutes and now it just seems intuitive.

I would "request" two or three things for a future update:

1) A 1 or 2 octave keyboard controller page (even though it's only a touch screen, this would help if you wanted to "play" the VCO's with other professional midi equipment... and be in tune with those (therefore one would also need a VCO Fine Tune knob).

2) Would love to see 2 or more VCO's... if the ARM processor can handle this.

These things are however, in now way shortcomings. For 5-dollars, the interface IS beautiful, the controls are beautiful, and what more could you want?

This version of Filtatron vs the one built into Moogfest

2023-06-04

Just wanted to pop in a note letting people know that this version of this app is more fully featured than the one that is included in the Moogfest app. It's kind of obvious that there might be differences, but I hadn't seen any mention of it yet.

Here's what is in this app that's not in the Moogfest version:
Line input - Makes the this app app capable of doing all sorts of effects on your voice or a guitar plugged into your iPhone in real time. The closest thing to this included is playing with filtering the samples.
Rate and Depth control of the delay - this app can be far more subtle AND far more over the top with the delay effects it can do.
Pad control of VCF - this app can let you control the VCF by pad control, which lets you do quick filter squelches, wild squealing filtered noises. Can be quite interesting in combination with delays.

I've been loving it as a sort of stomp box for guitars and synths. Very fun. I've also been using the iOS version of Nanoloop piped into this app. Amazing little portable chiptune studio!

You have to be careful though, as it might make you want all sorts of physical Moog devices. The touchscreen is just not as satisfying as turning a nice Moog dial.

Amazing Tool! (Experts Only)

2023-07-06

ATTENTION:
I would like to start my review with a solution to this "no sound" problem. Go to the presets tab, scroll to the top and tap "clean sample". There you go! Problem solved! Now please change your rating because Filtatron does not deserve 1 star.

With that out of the way, Filtatron is phenomenal! I wouldn't expect anything less from Moog. The possibilities and applications of this audio tool exceeded my expectations and the value you get for $5 is outstanding. However, with such a flexible and professional system there is a certain experience prerequisite you must have to fully understand and utilize all of Filtatron's potential. I would not suggest Filtatron to people who are looking for a toy to play with, you will be disappointed. But for sound designers and electronic musicians like myself, it is a great, invaluable tool I am delighted to have in my studio.

Awesome

Needs an AUV3 version

Works great!

Simple, fun, and functional. Fully recommend it.

Still love it

I still use Filtatron after buying it 8 years ago. Still my fave. Easy to use and like all of Moogs apps-it just works.

Brilliant Lil Thing

2023-11-09

This is such a unique, creative, and dynamic musical tool, I think it may be fair to call it its own instrument. Some of my favorite manipulated sample seshes came from Filtatron, itโ€™s a dream for sound designers, loopers, or anyone who wants an interesting and powerful musical device on their phone.

Still love it

2023-12-11

Yes like others I got this way back when. Yes itโ€™s still an awesome tool and has a lot of ability to make otherworldly sounds from my silly little iPhone. I do wish I could plug in a midi keyboard to control the loops like Animoog, but the real use here is of course with the x-y pads.

Unbelievable!

2024-01-11

Let me preface this minirant by saying I have owned three '80s-era Moog synths. My comments are these: 1) There is a learning curve with using an analog (in this case modeling) synth. Due to the wide range of control the Moog people give the users of their products, it is possible to have settings which are silent or very quiet, or just don't sound very pleasing. Be patient with this, as it takes some time to find the sweet spots. 2) For those who complained about the expense of Filtatron, consider this: up to this point you couldn't even buy a t-shirt with the Moog logo on it for $5. Moog ownership has been a cost-restrictive elite club for enthusiasts up until last week. I cannot believe they are selling this much wonderful Moog sound for that price. I have paid a bit more for much lesser apps. And have not paid less that $600 for even an "entry-level" Moog that needed repair. This is a steal, has the X-Y pads, you are able to run other sounds through the filters and modulate them, it has a built-in delay, oodles of controls, and some pretty good patches to start you off. Yes, a keyboard would be a nice upgrade, but for $5 this is by far the best synth for Iphone/Ipod and sounds better than many dedicated synthesizers. Unbelievable!
