I purchased iBird Pro in 2011 and it has worked well until about a month ago when my purchase/registration could not be found. Despite numerous emails to their “help” address. I have received no reply. I will not re-subscribe to this app despite it’s excellence. I paid for the app and the iBird Pro upgrade and will not pay again!

I purchased this app in 2013 (should have been for life), now I can no longer access. and app is looking for me to re-subscribe at $9.99/year. this needs to be re-instated for everyone that purchased this in the past. Has anyone had ANY success reaching out to anyone who can help? this is definitely not right.

Like everyone else, I'm super bummed the app I paid for, doesn't work anymore, and worse than that, they want me to re-buy it, in perpetuity, to use it again. Yeah no that's not going to happen. Mitch lives in a mansion in Sausalito I'm done subsidizing him. It's a database dude, I just don't believe the operating or maintenance costs are that high to justify ripping people off like this. Everyone is being squeezed with high costs on all sides all the time, and now this. I also wasn't able to get the free trial, no one responded to my several emails about it, so they aren't spending the money on employees that's for sure. I really loved IBIRD pro, what a giant bummer. I wish I could get my money back.

Member since 2009 and now it won't open. I don't mind a glitch, but when you fill out the email request to fix it... NOTHING. I'll be pursuing this until it is resolved to my satisfaction. It has been a great tool.

My wife and I are very upset that we cannot use iBird Pro anymore. We paid for the app and expected to use it for life. Please reinstate us with our paid app.

Who is interested in joining a Class Action lawsuit against the Mitch Waite Group for the way they have repossessed iBird Pro? In my opinion they have engaged in deceptive and fraudulent business practices. Imagine if you paid full price for a car and then someone came in the middle of the night and changed the locks on your car. That's what has happened to thousands of birders whose only crime was trusting the Mitch Waite Group. Like many of you, I purchased the iBird Pro app in 2011 and figured I owned it for life, just like any other object purchased in a sale transaction. There have been other iPhone apps that have transitioned from a paid app model to a subscription app model that have grandfathered existing users. I recently had this experience with the GAIA GPS app, and they converted me to a permanent "legacy" user exempt from the subscription. This is what iBird Pro needs to do with all of us who previously purchased iBird Pro. Mitch Waite recently posted the following explanation for the change: "Unfortunately, while we were leveraging the remarkable power of the Apple SDK and adding new bird species data, our costs climbed. We continued to pay our artists to draw new birds, ornithologists to research the many changes to species due to DNA research, and programmers to implement the new features and changes Apple made to the iPhone and iPad. So, at the same time our expenses were going up, our income was shrinking." So what you have here is a failed business model. I never asked for all the upgrades that iBird was investing in. All I expected was that, like a bird field guide, I would own the iBird Pro app for life. Ford does not get to repossess my car simply because they made poor business choices. In 2018, John Lanum of the Mitch Waite Group posted the following: "The only thing that is fair for both us and the customer is to offer customers a way to "trade in" Ultimate or Plus for iBird Pro. That way they get an app with a future and we don't take a huge loss." That seems like a classic bait and switch that they have now reneged on. App with a future? That turned out to be a pretty short future. More here from John Lanum of MWG: "Yes $14.99 is not a huge number but think about the customer who bought Ultimate for $19.99, then purchased Mexican Owls and the Time of Day IAPs. They have spent $25! Now the facts are that these apps and IAPs still work just fine, we are not taking anything away. But if they want to participate in the future updates they will have to spend $14.99 as you point out. Thats just not fair to them." How quickly the Mitch Waite Group walks away from their consciences. They claim that Apple is the problem, but I have had other app developers treat me decently when they converted prior owners to permanent legacy owners. That is the decent thing to do. Who is up for a Class Action lawsuit against the Mitch Waite Group? Brad Meiklejohn Eagle River, Alaska

Same as everyone else locked out and IBird is NOT responding. I own the phone and the app, purchased in 2010. How is it legal for them to block something on my phone?

Purchased In 2014 And Now They Want Me To Pay Monthly Sub. NO! This Is Unethical And Probably Illegal Due To TOS

And just try to reach them. It seems impossible. They obviously do not care. Just use the Audubon app instead. Not as good in the vocalizations department but the rest is fine. Mitch really made an enemy of me after years of recommending this app. I am super pissed off. I hate cheaters.

I am a long time Ibird app user. I have been using the app over 12 years. the app was purchased as gift and given to me. When I try to open the app and ask to restore purchases, I get a response, saying unable to detect a valid purchase. Based on your new terms of a rental based application I think I am entitled to the one-year free service. Can you help me with the one-year free service. I sent an email on 8/14/2023 and have not received a response.

It looks like I am not the only one with this issues, but I purchased this app last year (2022) and not it says that the app cannot be detected in the App Store. I emailed customer support but have not gotten a response. I need this app to assist with my job as a habitat manager, so can someone assist as soon as possible?

I bought this app in 2010 and now I am not recognized as a purchased user. Looks like many are having this issue. Either their site is down or they are trying to change the purchase to a yearly subscription. This would violate the terms of agreement from the original purchase so we should have access to ibird as we bought. I don't know where people are seeing that they want to change this to a yearly subscription but I think we have a small action lawsuit if that is really true. I hope it's just a site update they are doing but why wouldn't they notify anyone? I've tried to contact them directly through the app store but that doesn't work either.

Just like Cathy & Jackie -- I AM A LONG-TIME USER and have been trying to get info from the iBird people about what happens to all my notes & documentation if I "subscribe" "renew" or whatever it is I need to do in order to use my iBird Pro app!!! In the last 5 days I've sent 3 emails to Zendesk (using the form that pops up for "previous owner") with ZERO response. I am willing (though not happy) to "rent" the app as now required, but I want to KEEP MY DOCUMENTATION and want to know how I can do both! Please help, someone! Migration is happening and I need my app!

I am having exactly the same issue as Cathy above. Purchased the app in 2010 and now says it can’t find me. I have e-mailed several times through their access point for previous owners with no response. Can’t use app anymore. This is a major scam by the developers. They are making us pay again for a product we already purchased.

This is very frustrating. I already submitted my comments regarding the "previous owner" issue on the iBird Pro app and it is not even listed above. Does this mean iBird never received it?? Anyway, with this new program where we have to pay for the app on an annual basis, I clicked "previous owner" and as the above comments say, the app does not find I am a previous owner. I purchased this app in 2015. It even states that when I try to contact iBird in the app on my phone, which comes back as "undeliverable". Also, If I were to click "free trial" , and if and when I do sign up, will I lose my history of notes & photos I have added in the app. Will someone please answer me? I cannot use the app until this issue resolved. Hope to get this fixed very, very, soon. I use this app every day! Thank you. Cathy

I have been a "previous owner" and user of Bird Pro since 4 Sep 2011, as indicated in the "Previous iBird purchase not detected" email reply I received. What does this mean ? Am I now required to pay $10 a year to use my application ?

Since the latest Android update on my Pixel 6, iBird Pro 2 only shows about 20% of the screen area at the top left corner. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the result is the same. Is there anything else you can recommend?

Purchased all options and Photo Sleuth no longer works after upgrade

2022-05-03

by OkiiKuma

I have used iBird Pro for a few years and purchased all of the in app options. I used Photo Sleuth often and it worked fine until I upgraded to version 12.6. It would prompt me to install another Photo Sleuth or restore purchases. I tried several times and the restore would always fail. I messaged the developer and they had me delete and reinstall the complete app again. It still did not work after restoring purchases. The developers last response was I would need to update to the latest IOS. I explained if that was the case then why would it let me download and install it? In all apps I have ever updated on my apple phones, it will check the version of IOS and if not compatible it would not let you install it or indicate to use another version of the app. The developer was not helpful when I indicated this and has not responsive. How about fixing the issue?

Not worth it

I’ve had this app in my phone for a few months now, and I have not opened it even once in the field. I find it generally difficult to navigate, not to mention that there are much better FREE field guide apps out there.
Also, I heard an interview on a birding podcast, This Birding Life, from quite a few years back of the maker of this app (Mitchell Waite): he essentially said that he sent poor artists in third world countries photos and illustrations of birds and asked them to put their own spin on it so it wasn’t straight-up copyright infringement. He was very proud of “outsourcing” and getting this work done on the cheap. Perhaps this is also why some of the images are not that great. Most bird guides with illustrations include paintings done by people who have actually seen these birds in real life, so the results are much more true to life.
Don’t waste your money. Get Merlin Bird ID or the Audubon apps instead; they include a good field guide with other great features, and they’re free.

Mislabeled photos

2022-05-17

by WillieBT

I just downloaded this app and the first thing I did was look at the Rd-tailed Hawk info, a bird I have studied for over 50 years and I am very familiar with. Looking at the photos, there are some that are obviously mislabeled. The photo labeled “Red-tailed Hawk Juvenile 1” is actually an adult as evidenced by the dark chestnut colored iris and the varied colors on the bird instead of the light iris and more monotoned colors of a juvenile. Conversely, the photo labeled “Adult Red-tailed Hawk Adult 3-Flight” is actually a juvenile bird as evidenced by the light iris, the lack of a dark sub-terminal band on the secondary wing feathers, and the thinly banded tail feathers with no broad sub- terminal band and no red coloration. With almost a quarter (22.2%) of the photos mislabeled, this brings into question the validity of the labels on all of the other photos in the app. I am immediately feeling buyer’s remote after purchasing this app. I would recommend spending your hard earned money on Sibley’s app instead.
