IGN Entertainment Reviews

I don’t typically write reviews, especially bad ones, but the IGN app has went from great to useless. Previously I used the IGN app almost daily to look up game guides or specific game news (and more), which I always searched for on IGNEntertainment using the “search” feature. The latest update stripped IGNEntertainment down to nothing but a “News” page, a “Video” page, and a “Profile” page (if you create an account).
The news and video pages can only be scrolled through and refined to basic categories like “games” and “TV.” The search feature has been completely removed. Not only is there no way to search for news or information on a specific topic, there’s also no way to search for a specific article I read a few days ago, other than endlessly scrolling.
Articles can still be added to favorites and viewed from the profile page, but I don’t want to favorite every article I read just for the small chance I might want to reference it later - I want to be able to search for it if I need to.
I genuinely hope IGN listens to their users and releases an update soon that brings back the search feature. Search options are such a basic and necessary feature for any news-type app, and IGN’s app is quite a downgrade without it.

I’ve used IGNEntertainment for years now but it’s different than it once was. I can’t sign in to leave comments (no matter how many times I successfully sign in), I get kicked out from ads constantly without ever clicking on any (simply swiping over it when scrolling gets pops me out of IGNEntertainment to an ad), I’ve had some seriously messed up ads that were disturbing(only here, had one pop up back to back while scrolling that was just disgusting), and I’ve had multiple spoilers pop up in their captions that are supposedly spoiler free(guess this one’s actually on them, the rest are weird technical bugs that have ruined the experience for months now). Oh and the amount of ads has increased aggressively, making the issue where they pop you out even worse. I would’ve deleted it if I came up with a gaming news agency that I enjoyed at all.

Update…. App has just got worse in the months since I posted the review. Now on the rare occasion I do see a relevant article that I’m interested in IGNEntertainment just crashes every time I try to open the article. Finally just deleted IGNEntertainment . So disappointed as IGN has been my only source for movie, tv, and video game news for almost a decade. This is absolute garbage and it seems the developers have no intentions of backtracking on whatever this disastrous new format is. Would downgrade to negative 5,000 stars if possible.

Original: I have been using the IGN app for several years as my go to place for all media news, but this new update to the interface has rendered the entire app basically unusable. Nothing seems to be in any particular order, I’ll see 3 articles from various times throughout the current day and then the next 7 articles are from 2-3 months ago, and review posts are so broken they don’t even display the number out of 10 for the review when the same review on the website is displayed completely and correctly. Would give zero stars if possible.

IGNEntertainment used to be great and then you did the last UI overhaul and made it worse; now you’ve redone the UI again and made it worse than the last UI update. All my saved articles are gone, the score for reviewed games are gone, every time I hit the back button it starts me at the beginning of the newsfeed instead of where I was at which means I have to constantly scroll past the articles I wasnt interest in just to get to where I was, and the search bar is gone which means I can’t even search for a specific thing like reviews, walkthroughs, gameplay etc. The comments in-app are filled with people who are dissatisfied by this update! Considering most of us gamers feel ignored by designers and publishers, it’s kind of crappy that IGNEntertainment would choose to ignore us also when it used to be the Bible of Gamerdom.

I've had IGNEntertainment for five years plus. Every update seems to completely break or change something that worked. Now none of it works. My profile has been reset multiple times. Login issues persist. But the worst offender is lack of landscape mode. Why? Don't you know that most people use landscape?? I primarily use my iPad in landscape. Whenever I open IGNEntertainment, my iPad freaks out and is forced into vertical. So until IGNEntertainment is patched to include landscape, then I will cease using it. If it is not done in a timely manner then I will delete IGNEntertainment. I am using the updated version of IGNEntertainment on an iPad Pro 10.5 Update: You've added landscape, but it's worse than ever. It tries to load vertical, then having to turn my iPad every which way to get it into landscape just freaks out my iPad. I had to do a reboot of my iPad after this fiasco. I'm done. Deleting IGNEntertainment now. Zero stars if I could.

I love IGN, its employees, and their content. I’ve been using the IGN app daily for years. It has never been perfect, but this newest 6.0 update is quite bad. First, I lost all the earmarked articles and videos I had saved. Not a big deal, but a bit annoying. Second, either the articles under “Latest” are not in chronological order or the time stamps for the articles are very off. Third, the thumbnails are - for the most part - very low quality. As if they had not fully loaded in. Last, it is hard to figure out what is a video and what is an article before you click on it. When you do get to a video, playing it, going full screen, etc seems quite laborious.

I’m all for changing artistic directions, and I do like the cleaner aesthetic, but there are some glaring issues that need to be addressed. Thanks for all you do, IGN!

I have an “unlimited” data plan. One day 1/2 into my billing cycle my 5G decided not to work. After calling in to troubleshoot the issue they informed me I was being throttled because I’ve used too much data. Impossible I told them, that’s not what I do…my wife, maybe but me…nope. I checked my usage info and saw that I used IGN almost for 50GBs. It continued to stream video in the background for days. The easy way to prevent this from happening is to toggle the refresh in the background switch in IGNEntertainment settings (iOS)…however out of every app on my phone IGN is one of only 4 apps that does not have this setting. Utterly ridiculous. Thank you IGN for having the worst designed app on my phone and screwing me over for the next 15 days. I hope I don’t get lost and need to use GPS to figure out where I am.

Stories don’t load, the stream skips around so you can’t keep your place while scrolling and best of all they seem to know how to make the advertisements always work every single time yet the videos that are suppose to come after almost never work. Just use their website instead or better yet get your gaming news from a different outlet. Should be called an advertising application not a game news app. The one thing it’s suppose to do seems to be the one thing that it can’t do. I gave one start because it sometimes works if your lucky. Would have given it zero if it wasn’t for that fact. They also don’t seem to listen to complaints. In their comments section everyone always trashes them for how horrible their app is and then an admin will come in and say well I don’t have that problem on my phone… and then they don’t do anything. They just basically say well mine works so have fun with your broken app that we made, bye.

**APP CAUSING OVERHEATING

I have an iPhone 12 pro. The IGN app is buggy, freezes, and eats battery like mobile games do. I had been wondering why my phone kept getting hot and I looked and the IGN app is about 13% my battery over the last 10 days with 2 hours of screen time. The next app was clash of clans with 12% over 10 days and almost 8 1/2 hours of screen time. So the IGN app ate 13% of my battery in significantly less time than clash of clans did and CoC had way more screen time. Next is their video player is so buggy. Also takes multiple steps now to put it in landscape mode when my phone is normally locked in portrait orientation. The video player will play adds every single time, but the actual video I want to see won’t start or freezes after it does. Finally is IGNEntertainment is nice looking but features have been removed and adds auto pop-up now at random times even when I didnt tap to see the add. Im sure this is go drive more traffic to their add partners. Im sorry IGN i really used it daily but now I can’t because the new app is worse.

IGN was a great source at one point for all the nerd stuff! But to put it simple the flow of articles really hit the breaks as the years have past. Strange when gaming has grown so big. The journalist they have now can get political and some of them even show racism towards white people. I wish I was joking on that. And even the good journalist, that don’t show biased opinions to cater to gaming corporations or social groups. Tend to sound like yes men and agree with whatever the internet has to say on whatever topic. I’ve tried ignoring all these problems do to my love for games and my deep history with this site. But whether I want to or not, it’s a little too easy to find more relevant and updated gaming news. I cant recommend IGN to anyone who is serious about gaming and what it means to be a honest gamer.

Hey, I really enjoy looking through the ign content and it has been my go to for game info for probably a decade. With that being said I have had to revert to using the website version (which I feel is serviceable at best) because the newer iOS app is a disaster. *Edit: originally IGNEntertainment was a disaster because it crashed and wouldn’t scroll correctly. Now those problems are corrected. However worse and more insidious problems came with it. I’ve had to turn off cellular data for IGNEntertainment because it will blow through all of my data while running in the background. All in one night. I just wake up to a flood of texts saying I’m at 25% of my data, 10% data, 0% data, etc. Very worrisome. Turning off cell data helps this but at home when I’m connected to wifi it still runs through data and I wake up with a low battery. What gives? They said this was fixed on the last update but I assure you it remains an issue.

This review is purely for IGNEntertainment itself and is unrelated to the content IGN produces.

Any page other than any of the landing screens will load and reload until you eventually hit a blank white screen with the uppermost nav bar available (tap IGN to go back to Home or the back arrow to go back to whichever landing section you had used to navigate to that specific page) but nothing else. It may have something to do with the excessive amount of ads on the pages, but it’s difficult to tell for sure. Either way, it makes it impossible to use the guides I would normally be using for my games, which is my main usage of IGNEntertainment . I’d switch over to the website, but the mobile site is equally as glitchy but in other ways. :( C’mon y’all, I know you can do better than this.

I’ve never reviewed an app before, but I want some way to just maybe let ign see how broken IGNEntertainment is. The in-app video player is a mess. It takes forever to load no matter where I am, and if you’re watching more than one video a day prepare for the same ad before every video. They’ve completely removed the search option so finding past content is nearly impossible. And worst of all, nearly every time I scroll down a ways it suddenly reloads the screen to load in ads and the articles I was looking at have disappeared. IGNEntertainment used to be great, but when they did their redesign it broke so much. IGN itself usually has great articles (minus the never ending “top 10” lists…just stop that). I wish it were easier to get to them though.

Even if the quality of IGN's content had not fallen off so much over the years (which I don't blame on the staff, who I know are trying their best to balance what can often be a toxic audience in gaming with an owner in Ziff-Davis that has largely been the driving force behind the site's decline), I still would not recommend IGNEntertainment.

When stories or features do actually load without a need to close and restart IGNEntertainment , you still have to put up with ridiculous things like the lack of any option to keep videos from auto playing (there is an option to keep *the next* video from auto playing, but you are not able to prevent *all* videos from auto playing). If I wanted to watch the videos, I'll click play on them.

I have this exact app on my Apple TV fourth generation. I remember sending in a review to you about accessing buttons with voiceover is remote control. In IGNEntertainment itself for iOS, the same could be said. There are unlabeled buttons and I’m not sure what they do. It’s disappointing to know that video game news is not covered in this application. I see comic book stories, and TV show stories. Very little gaming news. I don’t mind comic books, but I can’t see them to read them. TV shows are OK. But I’m very picky about what I watch on TV. I hope that someone will see this review and IGN and get back to me with a response so that I may work with them on voiceover support. Also, bring back video game news. Search news would be awesome from makers like Nintendo of America, UBisoft, and others.

IGN’s app is great for keeping up on all the latest gaming and movie news, but recent updates have provided more technical issues than ever before. Video playback is finicky and sometimes it takes several refreshes to get updates to pop up. I’ve also been using IGNEntertainment across at least 3 different iPhones over the past, and every time I’ve had a problem where IGNEntertainment is the biggest battery killer over any other app I use. I’ll have it open for maybe 5 minutes and my phone will be extremely hot. No other app does this. Other than that, great gaming news and they are always on top of that in a timely manner.

Well first I’d like to say I’m great full for what your company and employees do for the gaming community as a whole. With that said your app could do with fine tuning. After my initial choice of content it’s hard to go back change my choices. A better tutorial on your settings would be nice, and also a way to go back a see that tutorial again if I need it would be great. As far as the content of your product. I would say it’s excellent from my per view. Only negative I could give would be that most of your reviews seem to start from a personal view point and stay that way until the end of the article. It might just be my personal view but a review is supposed to be facts and info followed by a personal opinion at the end, maybe two or three different opinions. Well sorry for the long winded review. I hope someone reads this and I hope I see some of feedback from this as well. Sorry for poor sentence structure. Lol 😆

Ive been using IGNEntertainment for years. Since probably 5 years ago actually. Ive never once had an issue with anything noteworthy, but the last 2 or 3 days, any time i scroll past a Starz ad, it immediately opens my browser and the Starz website. Ive been on this phone for about 6 months & thats never happened before, all of my other apps function as they have for the entirety of my time using them on this phone (excluding updates) but its getting insanely irritating having 5+ Starz ads opening anytime i try to get my daily entertainment news. Im unsure if anyone else is experiencing this, but its starting to make me consider either getting an ad blocker or dropping IGNEntertainment . And im not going to pay for an ad blocker on my phone, so it looks like IGN’s gonna get uninstalled soon if the ads dont stop. I feel like im in the season of South Park with the living ads or something

Once again a new update rolls around and all of my prior bookmarked content gets deleted...Try to add new bookmarked contact then go back to continue scrolling, but instead you restart back at the very top of content then have to scroll through all over again. They attempted to make this slightly better with a quick save by long pressing outside of the article. This worked initially, but it now hasn’t worked in a few weeks. Haven’t rechecked yet, but initial app update when max scrolling content on any tab would cause IGNEntertainment to crash. I love IGN for what they provide like no place else, and have for as long as I can remember, but this is classic problems with a fresh coat of paint.

Edit: save feature finally working again

I enjoyed that last edition of IGNEntertainment more. I liked the home page much better when it had the main headlines scrolling on top of the Paige and the rest of the stories below it. Also searching a game is much more cumbersome. Before I could search a game and pull up the game’s main page and within that I could read the brief description, find the review, see the release date, and if I wanted to dive drape I could go to the wiki page. Now the wiki page is the first thing that pops up and I have to click though a bunch of tabs to get where I really want to go. It’s confusing and I don’t like it

Videos will often times not play properly. An add will play for 30 seconds, and audio sometimes starts but no video. Have to reload, end up having to watch another 30 second add, and I usually lose interest in co tonguing by then.

Also, the comments sections of almost every article never loads. I get just a black screen usually 9 out of 10 Times trying to look at comments on ANYTHING. It’s been like this for months, so it seems like the developers of IGNEntertainment , and IGN in general, doesn’t care about IGNEntertainment or wether it works properly or not. They get add revenue from it still since those seem to work great, so no need to fix any other issues evidently.

All of these issues are on my iPhone 7 Plus so it shouldn’t be a compatibility issue.

IGNEntertainment has gone down the crapper. It’s loaded with ads, and it’s so buggy, it’s virtually unusable. They’re now a haven for clickbait, affiliate ads disguised as editorials, and these awful new takeover ads that blackout your screen and make you sit through a trailer for some BS content and you’re not able to bypass it for several seconds. Might now sound like a big deal, but it’s super annoying, disruptive and invasive. What’s more is the writing is nowhere near what it used to be. Things are loaded with spelling and grammatical errors as if no one is proofing their work!

I’m deleting this terrible app after having it for several years now that the quality is completely unrecognizable, much like what you’d expect from a tabloid site. Absolute shame.

I use the IGN app multiple times daily on my iPhone. I generally enjoy it, though your ads have always been buggy (looking at you “I can’t scroll without touching your large ads, but scrolling gets counted as a tap-and-launch of the ad” 😒). But this new ad bug (I hope it’s a bug) makes IGNEntertainment unusable.

I couldn’t get through the first 30 seconds of reading an article, or even scroll through the feed, without a Pokémon Let’s Go video ad that I never touched force-playing in full-screen, and it cannot be closed or swiped away. I had to force close IGNEntertainment to get the video to stop playing full-screen. The worst part is that I never tapped on the video, so it force played in full-screen mode randomly and unprompted within a few seconds of me launching IGNEntertainment each time. This makes IGNEntertainment unusable, and I’ll be avoiding it until it’s fixed.

I did a review a few years back on the IGN app being too video focused. Some people still like to read! However, my concern over the most recent revamp is the filters are not very effective. I'm interested in games, not comic books, not TV deals, and not movies. In fact in opening IGNEntertainment today, i had to move past 3 podcast stories to get an actual article. These may include video games news, but I'm not here to listen to podcasts, we do that in a different app folks. Let me filter by games, but all the stories are still stuff unrelated to games. Unfortunately IGN is more concerned about monetizing IGNEntertainment by having us click on these purported 'deals'. For those interested in news about video games, i would suggest Apple News app and just set 'video games' as a favorites.

They used to just be about gaming. Now they are SJW’s that have a political agenda they want to impose on us. No thanks. Also, their ability to review games honestly has been affected by this as well. Now, if you’re a white male protagonist in a game it makes the game bad according to them. A.k.a Days Gone. Remember when there was a debate as to whether games were a form or art and expression? I do. Now days these brainwashed soy latte drinking SJW’s are trying to tell you how you should think and feel about politics and if you don’t agree with them then you’re in the wrong. The Nazi party did this to its citizens but yet I’m the proverbial racist white Nazi male just because I’m a free thinker? #iamawake. You guys are asleep and lack true compassion for humanity. True journalism is all but dead. They don't feed you the truth, they feed their political communistic agenda.

I love using IGNEntertainment, it has (unfortunately) used a lot of my time because I like the stories and pretty much everything on it. However, there was a recent update that added dark mode... and it’s bad. First of all, not everything is dark. Some of the headers are still white so it is inconsistent with the rest of IGNEntertainment . Second, the text color has almost no contrast so when viewed on a dark background, it is unreadable. In light mode it works fine, but dark mode makes IGNEntertainment basically useless.

Please change the color of the text to white or at least a lighter grey so that I can read the great content that you guys put out.

I’ve been using IGNEntertainment for years thanks to its intuitive interface that makes for a convenient method of keeping up with all things gaming related. The only problem is I’ve experienced the same bug for literally years. The first time I open IGNEntertainment and tap a story IGNEntertainment gets stuck and I have to close IGNEntertainment , reopen it and then tap the story to actually read it. It’s incredibly frustrating because it’s something that should’ve been fixed ages ago. It’s not just the phone I’m currently using either. I’ve had the iPhone 4s, 6, 7, and now XS and have had the same issue on all of them.

IGNEntertainment is fine for what it is but what really bothers me is that in the year I've had IGNEntertainment (both on phone and iPad) you still can't move the device from vertical to a horizontal option! This is especially a problem on the iPad because it's annoying to hold it vertically for so long. I just wish you would add this super simple feature IGN! Other than that I've had no issues with IGNEntertainment, and in the time I've had IGNEntertainment they have only improved upon it. So I give it 3 stars until they add a horizontal option to view IGNEntertainment in.

Update again: comments won’t load in this update. Tried reinstalling and it didn’t help. Need fix ASAP.

New issue for this update. They put ads in the comment section. It is incredibly hard a phone to be able to scroll through the comments and not hit one of these large ads. In the news feed its no problem because the space they take up is much smaller, but this is not so for the comment section. Otherwise IGNEntertainment has truly improved lately, good job!

Update: IGNEntertainment still crashes constantly. After around 10 min IGNEntertainment just closes. IGN you're awesome but hire an engineer and get this thing fixed!

Recent update ruins the comments. I click on the comments on an article I'm interested in and now I have to scroll down to the article I was just on instead of seeing the comments. IGNEntertainment crashes all the time too. I expect more from you IGN.

This app as once great but total garbage. Why on earth is there is no landscape mode after years? Lazy employees finally announced in June 2021 that this would be added. More then a year and numerous updates later still no landscape mode. IGN basically saying f u tablet users. We are too lazy to implement this most basic and logic of features.
