Needs Work

The end turn button is just there to make you feel better. It doesn’t really add much functionality or make you feel like it’s does anything. Both apps are designed for phones. The google version is unusable on a chrome book even when it doesn’t crash out, because it scrolls instead of moves your tokens. There is no Windows app. I’d prefer to play on something large like a laptop or Surface. Using anything but a Phablet makes you fat thumb what you intended to do. The attack action needs more functionality than a tutorial of how to roll dice. On that, HeroQuest could really use a dice roller and the ability to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi link to other phones. It would be nice to track your character sheets and inventory, etc via HeroQuest . The existing tiny character sheets get chewed up by an eraser. HeroQuest would be better if it could link up like You Don’t Know Jack and then have the DM play from a laptop while the heroes join on their individual phones, iPads, tablets, surface, etc. HeroQuest is salvageable, but pretty garbage at launch. I’ll modify my review as they improve.

Needs a lot of work. But fun

So this definitely is helpful but has a lot of issues that could be fixed to make it better. Only one hero during the hero’s turn could attack every hero’s turn and it was always the first hero added to the party. That was able to be worked around by killing off monsters as they reached zero health but was still an issue. Occasionally actions would be locked as if monsters were near without any being within line of sight. The music and audio ambiance is actually quite an amazing touch. I feel HeroQuest could be drastically improved but is still quite useful in the game.

Fine Start

HeroQuest does a fine job and is a fine first edition. After two quests, here are some of the problems I have experienced.

1) The line of sight didn’t always appear to be accurate. There were times when the wizard was standing almost immediately in front of the monster and was unable to cast the “sleep” spell.
2) I didn’t see how to kill a hero. If a hero didn’t roll shields, there didn’t seem to be a way acknowledge that.
3) Movement of the heroes seemed to be a bit fiddle. The entire screen would move or the hero would be over sensitive and move to places you didn’t intend. You could always remedy that, but I found movement more awkward than it needed to be.

Desperately needs auto-saving

HeroQuest is functional enough for gameplay. It’s not idiot proof but it allows for a good solo experience.

However, it really needs some form of an auto save function. Too many times I have I been interrupted, phone went to sleep for too long, I had to check something else - whatever and when I return to HeroQuest my entire quest is gone. It seems to only save upon quest completion. I have been playing as time allows which isn’t always one full quest per sitting so HeroQuest holds me hostage to my current game out of risk of losing all my progress. It almost makes me not want to play this app using it at all.

It would also be nice if it was all inclusive, keeping track of gained treasure, items bought, etc., but first things first.

For a steep price tag on the reboot of this game (overpriced IMO) I’d expect better from HeroQuest.

Fairly good, definitely not great

It does make the game fully cooperative, but it basically forces one person to be in charge of HeroQuest to manage the game or else clumsily have to hand the iOS device around the table. HeroQuest needs local network connectivity to be 5 stars - this would allow every player to run HeroQuest on their own device and input their movement themselves which would propagate to all the other network-connected apps on other devices.

Both the zoom and scroll functionalities are annoying to use when on a phone and not a tablet.

Great to finally be able to play by myself!

I feel like I’m the only person in my friend group who wants to play this app, so I’m excited to be able to finally be able to play on my own. I love that there are options for the two main expansions that came with the Mythic Tier (and clearly will be available for public purchase later), but I’d love to see the Mythic Tier exclusive quests in HeroQuest as well.

Edit: I find myself frustrated that not only are the quests from the mythic tier included anywhere in HeroQuest , but neither is the Knight character. I would love to be able to use HeroQuest with both of these.

Questions & needed changes

Several features which are not in the boardgame instructions or difficult to find need explanations, such as bonus options n settings like what are the mechanics of “yeti hug breaks, advanced goblins/skeletons, double wandering monsters”? I also can’t seem to edit turn order etc after creating my party. What if we want to change the turn order at some point? There’s also some weird things like HeroQuest wanting to do damage when we use trap doors.
It would be a great feature to be able to design our own quests, & I don’t see any reason we shouldn’t be able to.

Decent start to this app, but needs updates

HeroQuest as I mentioned is off to a decent start, but it could use some updates for the following.

1.) when using on an iPad in particular, it could benefit from being in landscape mode. In portrait mode its not ideal for iPad to be in, and also if you cast to tv like I do, it would be nice if it filled the entire screen.

2.) Actions - You can continuously take actions which to new people playing may confuse them into thinking they can take more actions because HeroQuest lets you.

3.) movement - It appears you can keep moving around as much as you like. It should limit to what dice can give you and only be more if a spell has been used to allow extra movement.

4.) New Knight - the commander of the guardian knights need to be added in. Some have already gotten their characters so HeroQuest will need to keep up with the releases as best it can. I’m rather excited to try the knight!

The rest overall is fine and again if you come from playing this app and rules you can overlook the issues above and actually help keep things honest with your party.

HeroQuest again is off to a great start, and I am sure future updates will help polish and enhance gameplay. Looking forward to the next app update!

Movement is janky - Fixed

Edit 6/1/22 Just tested the new build and movement is much smoother in the phone. The map stays put until I reach an edge and then starts to move. Much more playable now.

HeroQuest is ok, but movement is very janky. As soon as I touch a character token, the screen starts moving up or down. Moving the token from left to right is a pain as the screen moving up or down pulls the token with it, dragging my movement path all over the screen. Is there a way to lock the screen in place when moving a character token that I’m missing? Using it on iPhone SE (2016 model) running iOS 14.8.1

Fun play

I enjoy HeroQuest as I’m the only one in my house who plays this app. I don’t have to try to schedule a game night and sync 5 different calendars of friends. I can pull out HeroQuest and play a game. The one thing I would really like to see is HeroQuest being able to go in landscape. It would make it easier for the iPad to sit on the table and be visible and also mirror on the TV if I do have friends over so we can all see what it going on.

It can now be used in landscape mode which is awesome. Now if I could use HeroQuest on my MacBook that would be ideal.

Doesn’t track spells correctly

I picked up Hero Quest last week and played our first session today. There are only 2 of us playing so HeroQuest is amazing since we wouldn’t really be able to play otherwise. Overall HeroQuest does a good job but the biggest issue we found so far is that some spells don’t seem to track correctly. For example we tried to use a spell multiple times that says the character can walk through enemies but HeroQuest doesn’t actually let the token pass through the enemy spaces. This kind of renders the spell useless.

Darn near perfect…

I can tell a boatload of hard work was put into HeroQuest. After playing 3 games with it, I have some suggestions for further improvement.
1) An undo button.
2) Less predictable enemies. Enemies always rush through open doors and into hallways every time a door is opened. This gets monotonous and predictable. Have them hang back and defend the room now and then. Or maybe have one charge out while the other blocks the door.
*Anyway, excellent job on HeroQuest.*

App works well, small wishlist

On the whole, the companion app does what it needs to, allows you to play solo or co-op mode without a GM/Zargon player, so it goes well with the game as is. There’s a few things I would wish for:

• Allow saving your game. I have a dedicated gaming space, but frequently get called away and pick up/drop games for days at a time until I get free time again. If you run a game on this, you have to finish in one sitting or else that game is essentially “lost” by HeroQuest and you need to start over. Being able to save out would be fantastic.

• Add campaigns for Spirit Queen’s Torment, Prophecy of Telor, and Crypt of Perpetual Darkness. These were part of the crowdfunding campaign, so maybe they’re exclusives or planned for later on, but it’d be nice to have app support for those.

• Quest designer: this is probably a big ask, but would be fantastic to be able to make & play custom content. You’d basically be getting the community to generate content for you, vastly increasing fan interaction and people would likely start porting over 20+ years worth of homebrew content.

Needs Skills/Magic Updates From Expansion Sets

Otherwise, this is a great app that can allow the Gamemaster to play as a Hero while HeroQuest moves on Zargon’s behalf. If you use the original four characters, the experience is great. If you use expansion characters like the Monk or the Rogue, it will say verbiage similar to “Read the reference card” rather than having the image with the verbiage. Adding that would be wonderful.

Frozen Horror locking up

Havent had a chance to play other quests yet but on the first quest for Frozen Horror (solo quest) app kept freezing up on the gremlins turns. Will have to play more to see if this is an ongoing issue. But HeroQuest also needs a save feature that isn’t “save & exit”. I shouldn’t have to exit the quest everytime I save my game.

Edit: I appreciate that the developer took time to respond and is still improving HeroQuest. HeroQuest has made playing this app a lot of fun because nobody has to act as Zargon. I love this app and I hope they continue to put out expansions for the game. Its great

Love it

HeroQuest not only makes HQ a 1 or 2-player game, it adds a sense of ambience and character through the sound and narration.

There are some quirks, like the enemy ai (in new versions they attack then walk away), but overall HeroQuest is excellent.

My greatest wish for HeroQuest would be the option for customization: as small as renaming enemy types or replacing their images/stats, or as grand as a quest builder. I imagine many folks like us customize their games no end—it would be incredible to bring those into HeroQuest

Love the app! Allows me to play with my kids.

Love HeroQuest (love the game too, have all expansions). It allows me to play with my friends and our two kids as one of the heroes. HeroQuest works pretty well and thus far no issues for me playing the basic quests. The narration is cool and my son gets excited whenever he hears Zargon say ‘The [name of monster] has been defeated.

With that being said a couple of improvement ideas for later upgrades:

1. A version for Windows: would love to use this on the laptop rather than iPhone. When we get together to play.

2. Ability create our own quests. I know there will always be limitations to the software as homebrewing and creating quests can be quite imaginative in a way software can’t emulate, but it would definitely be nice to at least create a quest using available heroes, monsters, traps, and add notes to rooms for treasure searches.

3. Add ability to play additional heroes (more than 4).

4. Lastly a ‘line of sight’ button or feature would be useful. There are workarounds but it would be nice to simply know if the dwarf can fire that cross or whatever.

Anyways, great app. It looks good has a lot of flavor, and I’m looking forwarded using it more.

Ver 1.61 seems broken?

Update: the bug that was freezing HeroQuest has been fixed and everything is working butter smooth. This arguably the best companion app out there. The art, UI, and functionality are fantastic. The voice over work is stellar for both Mentor and Zargon and adds a ton of AAA quality fun and atmosphere to an already stellar board game. I really appreciate the updates with the expansions! I hope Avalon Hill continues to add in the characters and expansions pack levels. These timely additions and attention make the in entire this app ip feel as loved by the developers as it is to the ravenous fan base. Frankly, I still cannot believe this is a free companion app based on the quality of build.

LOVE THIS APP…But, PLEASE add Landscape Mode

I absolutely love HeroQuest! It has breathed fresh air into this app and it is so great to play with friends where everyone can be a character and we can let HeroQuest be Zargon! Thank you so much! … HeroQuest could really benefit from a Landscape mode. Please consider it. It would also be amazing to have a quest builder option so fans can make there own quests. Definitely would be willing to pay for that option!

Love it!

Haven’t had any issues so far although their are some funny things like I can move farther than 12 spaces and can take multiple actions in a turn. I would have assumed HeroQuest would prevent us from totally breaking the rules. But that’s ok it’s still awesome.

My only recommendation would be to put HeroQuest on Steam. I think it would be better on a laptop or Surface Pro size screen.
