Has potential, needs bug fixes

2024-04-17

Has some potential! i’d like to see a few bugs fixed because I’ve only use Birda for a few minutes and I’ve already found some glitches.
Note to the devs:
- “Nearby” should be set to a handful of miles or perhaps within your state, not several states over. That’s not really nearby.
- Default view when you open Birda should be the people you’re following, not Community. Most people will likely prefer to see what their friends are spotting or what is being seen nearby.
- Overall, Birda is very slow. Blank screens, long load times, etc. When you post a sighting, it takes a long time for it to register to your life list. I made multiple posts of the same sighting trying to get it to show up in my list. It did show up but much later…and so did the rest of my duplicate posts.
Overall, Birda has promise but is too buggy to enjoy right now.

Amazing idea but…

2024-04-22

Birda seems like an amazing idea…however, I just attempted to import my eBird data into this app and discovered it is not a live sync. When I want this data to refresh in this app I need to download my eBird data as a csv and then upload to this app each time. I’m not leaving eBird and I don’t want to manually keep 2 checklist apps in sync.

Sadly, I won’t use Birda unless/until an eBird live sync is available…which other apps have.

Ok

2024-07-07

I can see the potential for Birda, especially for new birders. The ‘gamification’ and badges etc might make for fun challenges for new and old birders.
As someone who has been listing daily on eBird for years I am a lot more in tune with that app and record keeping style. Trying to use eBird with Merlin and then simultaneously keeping up with another similar app in the field is just too much and I personally find it too time consuming and distracting. I’ve given it a few weeks and realized it’s just one more thing I’m staring at on my phone when I should be concentrating on the birds and instead I’m staring at my phone trying to simultaneously keep two accurate lists with different types of data entry.
I may try adding eBird data manually at the end of the week for a bit but eBird has the top billing for accurately maintaining my personal records in an easy to digest format.
It’s a fun addition to the birding space and folks who aren’t big listers or eBird users will surely find it fun and valuable but it’s more of a novelty in my opinion. I do appreciate the effort to introduce another app to liven up birding.

Hope eBird is supported

2024-06-22

For now users may import their eBird sitings which is slow & time consuming. Having used eBird for a decade I have no plans to abandon Birda as I can submit observations effortlessly using 4 letter codes and use Siri to put in observations for me while driving. I hope a feed from eBird is added soon as I will likely only "import" once a year. Submitting observations through this app is much too slow and clunky - I have no plans to double my efforts for both apps. I do like the "social" aspect of this app as that is certainly missing from eBird. I refuse to use any "social" apps owned by jerks (FB, Twit...). So for the most part until this app came along I lived under a rock. I do like the challenges and will keep participating in those. Good app but needs improvement for me to use on a regular basis.

Amazing, adds the element of friendly competition

2024-04-27

I only have one critique, I wish the location counts of birds showed number of sightings vs a rarity score that is not clearly defined. Did I just see a rare, vagrant bird? Or did I misidentify? Oh wow, 2 other sightings in the general area! Instead I’m given an arbitrary rarity score. I’ve seen common birds receive an 8 or 9, and extremely unlikely birds and tough to spot birds score in the 3-5 range. I just don’t understand the scale.

Great App

2024-04-28

Birda is wonderful for what it is! It's very quick and easy to log new sightings and upload pictures. The community is very nice and helpful, especially compared to other birding groups where arguments often break out. One of my favorite things is the feature where you can search through birds on Birda and suggest one for an unknown bird species someone is wondering about. I think that if you could post videos and it was easier to log sighting in the "birding session" mode, I would give Birda full stars. Videos would be incredibly helpful for identifying certain bird species. While that would be cool, I feel as if the efficiency of logging birding session sightings is a more important matter that needs attending to. Rather than being able to simply click on the bird I saw or press an increase button for the number of a certain species spotted, I had to click through multiple things just to log a sighting and manually type in the number every time. Despite this, I still think it's an interesting feature and definitely promising. Overall, I think this is a good app for the casual birder interested in finding a fun and helpful community to share with!

Great app! One small suggestion.

2024-05-04

I’m having fun collecting badges and interacting with the community as well as having another home for my bird photos. I have a small suggestion: it would be convenient if when uploading photos, to start with the photo first (instead of the location) and if there is some way to import the photos meta data so you don’t have to manually enter it, that would save a ton of time, especially uploading photos from past adventures. Thank you for this great app!

Nice

2024-07-07

Love Birda, it’s very beginner friendly and easy to use and was a huge help as I started to get into birding. EBird is definitely a bit more intimidating getting started. Also enjoy the social media style of it and the ability to post comments! Only gripe is there are a few species in my area that aren’t an option on this app, and I don’t mean escapee/domestics, I mean like European Goldfinches and such. So I have to mark them as “unknown species” and hope I can go back and edit them someday in the future.

Great for birders of any level

2024-04-16

At first I chose this app just to have a nice list of all the species I’ve encountered but quickly learned Birda is much more. this app has been a great place to connect with other birders around the globe. It’s great to see others getting new lifers and to see where other species can be found. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for companions on their birding journey.

Get Birding with Birda

2024-04-16

this app is perfect for all levels of birders. It is very user friendly . It includes guides for birds in your area so even if you do not recognize a bird you can still identify through their user friendly guide. If you are unable to decipher what bird you saw their is a feature where you can post your sighting of an unidentified species and the this app community will help you figure out what bird you saw! this app s challenges inspire you to go outside as each month they set a new goal for you to meet. this app is the perfect birding app.

Favorite Birding App

2024-07-07

I’m not a full time birder, but I’m a wildlife and nature photographer. I’ve decided over the past few years to get more into bird photography.
I decided I wanted to keep track of the birds I’ve photographed as I went about it. I tried several other apps, and they were either too difficult or had to be paid for.
This one is super easy, and there’s a lot of friendly people in this community.
Only thing I would recommend is seeing if they could do a Sound ID thing like Merlin does so I could just use Birda and that’s it.

Enjoyable App!

2024-04-16

Love that this is the social networking app for birders. The platform is pretty active and love the different tab choices.

Would love to see an updated profile page though! Would love to see more of a “timeline” look as I’d love to see my posts in chronological order. However, love the feature where I can view all of my photos.

Birda Nerda

2024-07-07

I recently found this app a few months ago and stoked about it! I love being able to catalog collections of things like my music collection, movies, etc.. and love how easy it is with this app to log the birds I’ve seen. I’m not a social birder and enjoy it by my self or sometimes with my dad or my girlfriend. That being said, the social aspect of this app I actually find fun! I enjoy seeing what people near and far from me are spotting. The most rad thing for me is earning all the different badges! A must download app for any birder of any skill level!

The birding social app we’ve been waiting for!

2024-04-16

this app has been a great app for connecting with other birders and share sightings. It’s easy to log birds and see what others have seen. Initially it did take awhile for the GPS to catch up when on a walk, but that’s seemed to have been fixed. The developers have been super responsive to bugs and suggestions. It’ll have a place on honor on my home screen.

Pleasant solution to more complex apps

2024-07-07

Birda is a gentle kindness. It works well, it has nice little features, and I feel happy when using it. The more scientific competitors like Merlin and eBird will always be the definitive resource for identification, but having a more intuitive catalogue and social component to birding is enjoyable. I had a small issue early on in using and the customer support chat was very helpful and pleasant

Fun Social App!!

2024-04-16

I’ve only used Birda for a day. It doesn’t crash on me and it’s definitely the fun version of Audubon. I love interacting with other bird lovers. This is definitely something that the birding world needs. This is like a social media platform for sharing birds - you can meet new people on here. Such a great positive community. I’ve told a few friends about Birda. Looking forward to using Birda longer.

Best Birding App By Far

2024-07-07

My wife and I have tried a host of apps, including Birfa and Ebird, and this is by far the best. Seeing EXACT locations where others spotted birds, making social media like posts to share your birding sessions and sighting, following other birders to always see their posts, and the artwork for each bird to help identify is beautiful. Birda is super clean and easy to use. 10/10 recommend to any and every birder.

Love it!

2024-07-07

I really love using Birda and keeping track of all the sightings I have. It’s easy to use and really positive. I just wish more people were into birding - it’s a real life scavenger hunt. The only suggestion I would have is maybe to include a chart that shows you by month which birds you’ve sighted, that way I can easily see which birds are visiting by season.

Makes my bird nerd self happy!

2024-07-07

Love Birda! I’m a beginner birder and starting birding because of Birda. I’ve been learning much more things because of Birda! Also, I gotta love the bird walk feature, it’s pretty cool. Really the only bad thing is that there isn’t a sound ID feature, but obviously you can just get Merlin ID for that.

Overall, I totally recommend Birda!

such a wonderful app

2024-07-07

i don’t write reviews, but this little app is SO wonderful. i love how easy it is to use and all the features it has. the community is so fun to be apart of and it makes me want to get outside more often! i’ve always loved birds and birding, but Birda has made birding even more enjoyable. would absolutely recommend.

Finally a Birding app for everyone!

2024-07-07

Having used different birding apps for years daily, this app has easily become my favorite!
this app has found a way to take key features from other birding apps, list keeping, a top tier bird guide, challenges, and plenty of educational features.

The challenges are fun and unique to this app! Which really does inspire you to get out and look for birds! You get “Badges” for completing challenges which is fun. You can also set your own challenges for you to complete!

Seeing posts from people all over the world has been very educational.

The list keeping in Birda is great! There are photos of the birds next to the name which is great for beginners but also great for experienced birders. Just a click from there and you are brought to a wealth of info on the bird, including the calls! And all within Birda ! Not only can you see your bird lists but see the amount of time you spent.

The biggest appeal to me has been the social features that make it fun to really “bird nerd out” with other birders and bird watchers... I can only do that so much on other social apps. Here it’s a part of it.

Birda

2024-04-16

Birda has really helped me through out my birding journey, helping me keep track of what I see and really encouraging me to go out and enjoy nature more. Connecting with the birding community is very beneficial by interchangeable ideas helping identify certain species and rarities. Overall great app.

Terrific App for Birders

2024-04-16

Downloaded this app around the time my interest in birding was sparked, and it has been a terrific app to help me (1) share my experience, (2) document my sightings, and (3) learn more about birds in general. That said, I also believe this app is a fantastic app for birders of all experience levels. Great community!

Nice way to engage with a community of birders

2024-04-16

this app is a great idea. It’s a birding app that connects curious people within a nature-centric, online community. Learning more about the natural world and sharing your findings with a community of likeminded folks is a really good place to start help folks value the biodiversity that we have. And begin to protect it, too.

The best bird logging app

2024-04-20

this app is honestly the best bird logging app I have seen. I love all the features it has from being able to do a session and log all the birds you see in one sitting, to being able to connect with other birders from all over the globe!

Features

Birda is not your typical bird identifier app, it also connects the global community of birders irrespective of how they already record their sightings! Simply sync or import your records from eBird, Merlin Bird ID, iNaturalist, Birdtrack, Birdlasser, and more to get started.

Birda sends all of the sightings data it collects to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) so that scientists can use it to understand more about the world’s bird species and their habitats.

Birda is a free bird app & community for anyone curious about nature and birds, no matter your level of knowledge or previous bird watching experience.

Stay motivated by joining challenges and making new friends - it’s free! Don’t know a bird? Use the global field guide or tap into the community and use HI (Human Intelligence) to identify what you have seen - and grow your birdwatching & ID knowledge faster.

Our taxonomic engine makes taxonomy seamless, allowing users to view each other’s bird sightings in their taxonomy of choice, irrespective of what is being used by other users.

For example, you can see all your bird ticks for the last month or year and your home and patch lists (regions, countries, states/provinces & nature reserves coming soon!).

Set up your home location, and Birda will also automatically create Home Lists and Patch lists for all the sightings you post within your Home and Patch boundaries.

Your bird sightings have a direct impact on helping conservation, so all that time in nature is good not only for you but also for the planet.

If you want to move your records to another platform, you are free to export all of your sightings from Birda.

Log your bird sightings - one at a time or multiple sightings as part of a birding session.

Have fun using your smartphone as a powerful tool to help conservationists protect a myriad of bird species.

We currently support imports from eBird, Merlin Bird ID, iNaturalist, Birdtrack and Birdlasser, with more coming soon.

With Birda, anyone can get outside, identify and record the birds they see, and share them with a fun and inclusive community.

Birda automatically generates sub-level lists based on time and geographic location.
