2.7 out of 5

Unable to enter a VIN as promised. Deleting app.

2022-06-02

Update: There’s more at stake when having to keep an app operating in the background than how often it communicates with home. And the excuse the developer gives for requiring keeping SaferCar open doesn’t hold water. Also, the VIN entry fail is persistent and calling them as instructed by the error popup was a waste of time bc I had to leave a message and no-one returned my call.

Original: I’m also not interested in an app that requires that it constantly be open and running in the background for it to work. By the way, it doesn’t work then either. A waste of time for the user and an example of what gives government agencies an image of ineptitude.

Let me just enter a VIN!

2022-07-03

Downloaded SaferCar for my new pre-owned BMW 2-series, but SaferCar doesn’t know about the 2-series, which has existed for 4+ years! How about I simply enter a VIN?
___________

Thank you for the reply. I’m able to find “2018 BMW 2 Series” but not “2017...” — my vehicle is a 2017.

You can’t paste a VIN?!

2022-08-04

Come on.

Tires

2022-09-05

Terrible. For Michelin tires only has about 6 tires of their entire line. Must be missing 1,000’s of tire styles/sizes

Very useless app

2022-10-06

They should notify us when SaferCar start to work

Vin lookup fails every time.

2022-11-07

Cannot really add my car because a backend problem prevents the vin submission. Tired of trying.

APP will not open with IOS14

2022-12-08

Just down loaded SaferCar after updating IOS14. App will not open. Tried deleting and reinstalling, no go.

I’m currently having the same issue pre 14.5 .

Keep app open all the time? Really?

2023-01-09

Who the heck is your app developer? Seriously. Apps can run in the background without having to be left open.

Great idea, terrible execution

2023-02-10

Missing some of the most popular vehicle models sold in America- like the f150.

The whole app must be open to get updates is noob. The devs need to crack open some iOS textbooks.

Cruddy App

2023-03-11

SaferCar is garbage. Whoever coded it needs to be put in the corner. When you download it it will lead you through a setup and then when you go to click “got it”, nothing happens. Then, when you force restart SaferCar , and try to open it again, it flickers and then disappears back to the home screen. Safer Car? Guess not.

Poor user experience lead to quick delete

2023-04-12

First I got prompted to enable push notifications by iOS long before onbording explained why it’s needed. Then I’m told I need to leave SaferCar open to get alerts. That’s what push notifications are for. The last straw was that I could not find a way to simply add my car by VIN. SaferCar is not yet ready for prime time. Deleted.

Clutsy

2023-05-13

Terrible unfriendly if you are trying to add a VIN Zespecially for a second car. It seems unable to do second car as first one’s info cannot be taken out of the second sign up. Putting my vin in manually to SaferCar yielded no way to add and monitor and interestingly did not detect any recalls when if I add that same vin to the nets a website there are all sorts of recalls. So there is obviously a database and functionality issue here making SaferCar useless

Where’s my car?

2023-06-14

Can’t find 2022 Toyota Prius, or for that matter, any 2022 Toyota.I downloaded SaferCar because I discovered a recall for my brand new car and thought this would be excellent in keeping me aware of what was happening rather than having to constantly check on my own. I was able to do a workaround by entering a different year- 2011-and then my vin. But then suddenly it was showing up as a 2021, even though it recognized my Vin as a 2022. Ugh.

Unable to find support link on website, so a review will have to do

2023-07-15

The concept is great but SaferCar execution is a failure. The initial load of SaferCar got stuck on what seemed to be the last page of the “what’s new” pop up. The “Got it” button did not respond. There were no touchable areas that would exit the what’s new screen. I had to force quit app. Now app crashes repeatedly when attempting to open. Reinstalled app twice… same thing. NHTSA really Pinto’d this one. 🚗 🔥 👎🏻

Won’t open

2023-08-16

Think you guys need another update. There’s obviously a problem because SaferCar just started crashing and now won’t open.

Stopped Working With IOS 14

2023-09-17

Safer car opens and immediately closes since the IOS 14 update...need a fix please.

A good way to learn of (and track) recalls

2023-10-18

With the exception of a few VIN entry glitces, I really like SaferCar.

Why not use push notifications ...

2023-11-19

... instead if requiring the application to be running continuously? It’s 2021 and we have just put another rover on Mars for crying out loud!

UPDATED to 4 stars based on explanation provided with Developer response.

App crash fixed - Thank you!!

2023-12-20

Update 5/4/21:
App updated to v1.2 and does not crash any longer. Re-added my vehicles and all looks good now.

Love SaferCar but version 1.1.4 keeps crashing. Deleted SaferCar and reinstalled again, only to have SaferCar freeze after going through the prompts. On iOS 14.5 now.

Works great

2024-01-21

Works as advertised. I didn't have any outstanding recalls yay but I'm looking forward to getting notifications this way - much better than relying on a letter in the mail. (And to the person who gave a poor rating because you said it didn't give you the option to put in a VIN - you search for make and model then you get to enter the VIN. I'm sure this is to make vin searching faster.)

Doesn’t work

2024-11-17

SaferCar does not do what it advertises to accomplish. There is no way to enter a VIN (28 Aug 20), so my “Virtual Garage” is empty.

Half baked folks...get your coders to clean this up...the promise is excellent, but the current execution misses by a mile.

Models not available or vin # entry

2024-11-17

Common vehicle not available as a choice for garage and can’t locate vin # entry option. Not well done. Unusable.

Doesn’t work

2024-11-17

You have to enter the year and model first and then the VIN but not all models are there and VIN numbers are not recognized.

Requires ios 13+.

2024-11-17

Requires ios 13+.

worked well, found my vehicles and showed no recalls

2024-11-17

Thanks for creating SaferCar .

Features

• Check out NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings, and our online car seat tools that help you find the right seat, understand ease-of-use and check to make sure it’s installed correctly.

Every year, NHTSA manages millions of recalls affecting vehicles, tires, car seats and related equipment.

SaferCar will notify you about any safety recalls affecting your vehicle or equipment as long as you leave it running in the background.

SaferCar is your connection to automotive safety recall information directly from the official source—the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

• Enter any related automotive products you own that could be subject to safety recalls, like tires, car seats and trailers.

To protect your privacy, NHTSA doesn’t store your device or VIN information on a server in order to send you a notification when a new recall is issued.

This means SaferCar needs to run in the background so it can check for recall updates periodically from your device.

• Know you’ll be better informed should any recall impact your vehicle or related equipment.

• Opt-in to receive notifications on your mobile device for each of the vehicles and products you’ve entered.

• Enter a vehicle identification number (VIN) for as many vehicles as you own.

Your virtual garage will accept VINs for cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorcycles and more.

• Know that NHTSA will never store or share your user data.

If you force quit SaferCar, immediately reopen the app.

From Apple: You should force an app to close only if it’s unresponsive.
