Okay I get it people need to make money, but I’m so disappointed I was super excited to get Stride only to find out it is subscription based. No basic version or premium version. It’s only one and you cannot use it unless you pay. Who wants to keep paying for all these subscriptions? Not me. Guys if you change this I will be excited to use Stride, I would even go so far to pay $5-10 one time for Stride . I’m not paying for another subscription though.
After deciding I no longer want to use the this app app, I learned there is apparently no straightforward way to delete my profile and associated data. This means my past location data could remain visible to other users indefinitely. Stride privacy policy states that you should email the developer to request data erasure, but I’ve done so four times without being acknowledged.
This is my second year using this app. When it first came out I was a fan of the concept. Today, I’m not a fan anymore. I just ran an 9 min mile in a new location I haven’t been to and once I was done, I went to a park, not too far away and did a 4 mile hike, not even touching or anywhere near my precious territory. After about 75 minutes later, completing my hike and submitting my activity, Stride gives me a message, telling me that it’s not accepting my activity because it’s a “duplicate activity”—please! How can this be anywhere remotely duplicate to the short run I did earlier? So I did all that hike for NOTHING. If this sort of thing doesn’t get resolved, I will certainly not be using Stride again. NOT A FAN! 👎
So the concept is there, and I understand where the devs want this game to go. The only issue with this application is the absolutely absurd pricing they are asking for. I found out about this through and Instagram advertisement, and honestly thought It was going to be a free app. After I downloaded and I found out it was a subscription based payment, I’m probably going to call it quits. There’s no way I can justify 20something dollars a year on an app I would expect for free. Devs should implement some sort of free version and sell ad space for people who would not want to pay for Stride. At most I thought I’d be paying $1 for this. Well folks, I guess the “battle pass” phenomenon has officially made its way into Stride Store.
Unfortunately Stride does not work, as I watched Stride and walked over 500 meters, my “location” never changed, and it said I covered 0.0km.
Hopefully the developers will keep working on Stride. It’s a great idea, just not finished yet. Would love to edit this review in the future.
They need to make Stride better than Strava before the entire idea simply becomes a feature on Strava!
I’ve used the free version of Stride on a few cities over several months. Fun idea in theory. Sadly, in practice it crashes on me in about 1-in-5 runs or rides. That loses your conquests and any record of your track.
You collect territory by visiting and/or encircling areas, so these buggy crashes are just annoying as far as the game goes.
Writing this review kind of out of frustration over having rode and ran a lot of miles today, only to lose it all. But maybe the bugs are a feature, in warfare there’s a lot of randomness in victory.
Stride is really fun. I already liked exploring, but to gain real territory while on these expeditions is rather neat. Now for the pit falls I subscribed to the free week and after this decided to upgrade for a year because the price break is rather substantial. I am still waiting on Stride to give me what I paid for. If the true paid app only could have been as fast as the free trial that would have been great I have reached out to support but have not heard back from them yet. Willing to change this to 5 ⭐️s if I ever can get the premium experience back.
It’s a fun idea but severely lacking in the gameplay aspects. I am car free and walk around my neighborhood (6+ blocks in all directions) multiple times a day, but never can get ownership because of how they calculate area. Basically, long distance runners do a 20 mile loop three tomes a week and get credit for EVERY space inside that loop. They have never been on my street, much less so often they should get game credit for most visits. I suggested a few ways to weigh the credits to makenit more engaging for non-marathoners but I never got so much as an acknowledgment from the developers. Deleted.
Absolutely love the idea for this game. Makes running a little more fun! However, since downloading Stride I’ve had nothing but issues with it. Loads extremely slow and crashes every few minutes for me. Definitely hope Stride continues to improve because I would love to use it on a regular basis.
Love Stride - pushes me to run and walk more but have consistent issues with the Apple Watch capabilities… mis-tracks and voids activity claiming I cheated with no way to dispute and doesn’t always sync activity tracked on watch to your profile (spinning wheel and never lets you ‘end workout’)
Many missed hexes… I want my hexes!! Ha
Stride has an exciting and fresh spin on the never ending litany of fitness and tracking apps: make a game out of it! The world is divided into small (quarter-mile?) hexagons and your job is to capture as many of them as possible. I was OK with sharing the places I frequently walk at the scale of the hexagon. However, when you challenge another player's territory (which inevitably happens if you walk anywhere other people have been), they/you are alerted and can plainly see the activity trail you took during your offending walk/run/roll. It just made me feel strange and unsafe. Also, if you exercise from your home, anyone can plainly deduce where you live from your activities. But I can already hear my critics: You could stop and start activities away from your home. The truth is: You will not do this. You will just stop using Stride altogether. We're already fiddling with so many apps and devices, this just isn't going to happen. It would be nice if the developer could add a geoblocking feature that lets you set a radius around where you live to exclude details about your home's precise location. Also, how is there no way to participate in the game but not allow other players to see the exact path you took? If you take the same paths all the time, this information is just freely available to anyone who has access to Stride . That's just a plain security risk if you have a mind. Proceed with caution, I guess.
I just got Stride and so far really like it. I haven’t experienced any glitches yet which is great as it looks like a newly released app. I like the idea of being able to collect hexes and it would be great if you were in a running community. By collecting hexes it makes me want to run new routes which is awesome. I hope eventually they had weekly/monthly challenges to encourage running. Excited to see what else is in store
A lot of improvements have been made to make Stride more coherent and competitive. Now, it just needs more users!
As a competitive person, Stride has gotten me off the couch constantly to defend and grow my territory. It’s just so satisfying to watch YOUR “empire” grow as others‘s shrink. Plus, it’s led me to explore parts of town I’ve never been to. No muss, no fuss, just walking around town and conquering hexes. I love Stride.
Honestly I LOVE Stride! Super cool idea, and an awesome way and creative way to connect your local running community! But it doesn’t seem to have Apple Watch compatibility. That would make it perfect, because I don’t run with my phone since I have an Apple Watch. Is there plans to add this?
Discovered Stride a few days ago and have already wasted far too much time looking at the map and my usual runs and thinking about how to tweak the routes to acquire more hexes. Is Stride perfect? Not yet but I am optimistic that it will continue to improve. Is it worth the subscription? Maybe not, but honestly the cost is equivalent to a few cups of coffee over the course of a year. Am I addicted? Absolutely!
I’m not much of a gamer, but I loved the original Run an Empire running/competition game. this app is all the simple parts that I loved! Hoping more people join soon.
It’s a fun game, but I don’t think I should have to pay if I’m the only person in my area
Hopefully the development team will do some advertising so we have some more competition!
Fun app that is great motivation and easy to use, needs more competitors :)
