About Training Today

What is Training Today?

Training Today is an app that monitors your health data from Apple Watch to determine your readiness to train (RTT) each day and throughout the day. It helps you stay safe from overtraining injury or lets you know if it’s the best time to work hard, take it easy, or have a rest day. The app has been developed with British Triathlon Coaches and tested on athletes of varying ability. It uses the advanced capabilities of Apple Watch to monitor your health 24hrs a day and process that data to create a simple accurate readiness to train (RTT) score to help you reach your training goal.

Features

- Calculates your readiness to train (RTT) score automatically throughout the day.

- Presents a multi-day chart showing how your score is changing.

- Using the Digital Crown, you can scroll through previous RTT scores on the chart.

- Runs independently on Apple Watch, no need for iPhone to be present.

- iPhone companion app also shows your current RTT score and tutorial.

- Full support for all complications means you can quickly glance at your watch and see your current RTT score at any time.

- Fine-tune the recommendations and chart using adjustable “smoothing” and “intensity” settings in the iPhone app (with in-app purchase).

- Uses Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Workout detection and its own algorithm to determine your RTT score.

- Automatic filtering of outlier data (e.g. very larger variances in data).

- Workout detection - detects when you have completed a workout logged to Apple Health and shows it on the chart.

- Post-workout prompt - if you have completed a workout but the app doesn't have a recent HRV reading, the chart will show an exclamation indicator (!) prompting you to use the Breathe app to get a new reading so that the app can update your RTT score and chart.

- Both iPhone and Apple Watch apps need access to HRV & Workouts in Apple Health.

- More info at https://TrainingTodayApp.com.

- The app provides only information, is not medical or treatment advice, and may not be treated as such by the user.

Excellent so far

I’ve been trying to incorporate HRV into my training for a while but so far available apps have insisted on specific hardware and/or been too top-heavy looking for manually inputted correlations with other metrics. Many of the latter exist in other app ecosystems that only partially share data with each other or with apple health. I’d frankly rather be out riding my bike that any more messing around with this, and have been waiting for a solution that just used what’s on hand in apple health already. I get that it’s not as good as standalone hardware, and that ideally HRV would be measured at a fixed time, like every am etc., but it’s still data, and after looking at it for over a year (and using Breathe first thing each am) it does correlate with how I’m feeling and my performance.

So, 5 minutes with this new app and using existing apple health data it perfectly predicted in retrospect what my week has been like, including having felt fantastic on the bike this morning, which was correlated with a 10/10 peak performance prediction.

Not much in the iOS app itself, but the watch complication/app is perfect. Get it. Oh, and I’d be willing to pay for this BTW.

Love the app and can’t wait for more features!

Hello, I just had to comment because TrainingToday is exactly what I have been looking for and does a great job at it too. In essence, TrainingToday tracks your HRV over a period of time, including during the evening which is the best time to measure when viewing how “recovered” you are and ready to take on more strain. I compare this to the Whoop strap recovery system, and it’s pretty spot on regarding how recovered my body is compared to Whoop. I know Whoop takes HRV, RHR, and sleep into account for their recovery score, and I think this only takes into account HRV. I know the others might be duplicative and I’m not sure if this takes into account RHR. Keep it up though, look forward to more features as you roll them out!

Pretty Helpful

So when I first downloaded TrainingToday I thought it didn’t work. My score was ALWAYS a 10. I would do two workouts a day and maybe it would drop to 9.5. I assumed this meant this was just TrainingToday being faulty. Then after 3 months of use and some variability in my score i contracted COVID. Now my score won’t is hanging out in the 1’s and i would love a day in the 7s let alone a 10 ten score day. This is actually helping me manage my energy while struggling with COVID for the past month. I’m dealing with exhaustion. On the few days I felt better I tried doing a light workout and ended up in bed for days. My score helps me know when I need to take my rest seriously and help my body recover. I look forward to more information being available in TrainingToday , maybe the ability to see your history of past month or past year on your phone. It overall helpful, especially for a free app!

Pretty useless

I’m not sure where TrainingToday gets its calculations from. I downloaded it more out of curiosity because I’m an advanced athlete and I know exactly how I’m feeling and when I need to take it easy and when I can push it. I always do think that HRV is a fairly decent approximation of how ready you are to train. So I thought hey let’s see if this actually works.

Bad news: it doesn’t. You would think it would be pretty easy app to design. Just look at your average HRV and see if you are below or above. Then give yourself a score. You can see average HRV for any period in the Apple health app. You can also see your latest HRV value. So just do the math and voila. But TrainingToday really doesn’t seem to capable of making that calculation, instead relying on smoothing or something. If you play with the two settings you can get TrainingToday to say completely different things, which is frankly laughable.

I get this is basically a beta, so I’ll give them a chance to improve but really how difficult is it to do that very simple calculation?

Research HRV to understand this awesome app!

This gives a fantastic easy to understand stress-management or ability-to-recove-from-stress score using HRV. I didn’t understand why I was getting erratic and often low readings, some research into HRV led me to do some work on recovery, diet, and supplements to reduce oxidative stress, and now my score is more consistent and on the rise. I feel better than I have in decades, the science behind TrainingToday is solid!

The Dev team was awesome as well, I look forward to any improvements they have planned!

Good enough for a free app

Considering a whoop is $30 a month and this is free, I’d say it’s totally worth it, especially if you’re looking to utilize your Apple Watch and not start wearing a second device. For someone who does Crossfit 4-5 a week, this does a good job of helping me know when to schedule a rest day, or what days to go a little easier in the gym. If I were a professional athlete or training was how I made a living, I’d shell out for the whoop. But for more of a weekend warrior, this does the trick.
Unfortunately the Apple watch only checks your HRV a handful of times per day, so the data is often times a few hours old. I docked it 1 star because sometimes it seems that you have to load TrainingToday to prompt it to go read the latest Apple Watch data and update your score.

Interesting but confusing

I’m not a workout enthusiast so much of the terms and information are confusing. I like the display of information and appears to be accurate but can’t find details of what the information is telling me.
I guess I need a ‘Dummies Guide’. The video links are for people who are familiar with workouts and recovery so they are of no use to me.
I think TrainingToday is very useful but a beginner guide would be a great addition.
UPDATE: Developer responded the next day to my review promising an update to their website offering what I would call ‘beginners guide’. I look forward to this in my future workouts.

Does What It Says

Great app that I have had for quite some time. Lot of comments that it does not work, does not update what does it mean. Do about 5 minutes on google and find out that apps can only send updates to your watch at specific intervals, read up on HRV and you will totally dig it. It’s a great app that if you use as a tool, part of your overall fitness planning it will give you insight on your fitness. Does what it says.

Whoop whoop

I have been using TrainingToday for the last 2 weeks. It “feels” accurate to me because i have lost almost all motivation to work out due to fatigue and sometimes my scores are even below 1. This is the longest break I have been on in a year and my recovery is slowly...recovering.
I have considered buying a Polar heart monitor and also WOOP but this is telling me everything I want to know for FREE. Thank you for making this available.

HRV is where it’s at!

TrainingToday is awesome. It constantly monitors HRV and RHR and probably some other things to determine what type of training you should do.

If you are in to knowing when you should train then you should read about how TrainingToday works. Once you understand the tech behind it you’ll be convinced this is the way to train. Cheers!

1.6 update is terrible

I have used TrainingToday since early versions and love it. Unfortunately the latest update is a terrible one. Hiding the basic settings (which were previously available for free) behind an in-app purchase is basically forcing users to pay for TrainingToday (so why market it as free….just charge for TrainingToday up front). I fully embrace developers, App Store and in-app purchases and will not have an issue paying for something that is useful to me but I disagree completely on moves like this from developers to try to force the user to pay specially if the functionality was provided for free before.

Very intelligent

TrainingToday does what it’s supposed to do. I have not had many green days for peak performances. There isn’t much information about TrainingToday is why I gave it 4 stars. I understand how the HRV is calculated, but I don’t understand the blue range line. Mine is much smaller than my boyfriend’s. Also, I’ll stay at the same peak number the entire day sometimes and it won’t “refresh” again for awhile. What causes the number to change and when?

By

Beautiful graph but what does it mean?

I do a work out and then I take one minute of deep breathing and suddenly it means I’m ready to work out again? I wish there was more insight about what the number actually means and how it is impacted. Otherwise it seems to be disconnected from how my body actually feels.

Free version does nothing

Maybe I am missing something but the free version does nothing. It has been showing me at 10 for a couple of days. How can it always be a 10?

Originally I thought of buying it but because the free version does not seem to offer any indication that it is actually doing anything I didn’t bother. It is misleading to have a free version that does nothing.

I would give it one star but thought that wasn’t fair based on only using free version.

Useless

I really wanted to find something to track recovery. This is completely useless. You have to fiddle around with the smoothing and intensity to make it look how you want it. Which defeats the purpose. And it counts charging time as resting time. And it’s so slow at calculating. And the ring doesn’t update as quickly as the number. Obviously it has tons of bugs. Mine has been showing below .5 for several days. Really? Even after 3 days of sleep? Still 0.2? Glad I didn’t pay for this one.

Useful and Easy

What a nice little application. I’ve tried various HRV apps to track cycling and CrossFit recovery (or damage depending on how you look at it) and all required some intervention on my end. Most were simple but I just couldn’t stay compliant.

Training Today is easy, just wear your watch and keep an eye on the complication.

TrainingToday recently showed that I was race ready and that day I set multiple PR’s and top ten finishes on segments in Strava. Awesome for knowing how hard to push and when to rest.

Nice little update that just included workout data in to the RTT score. Looking forward to future updates.

Great app 👍

For my it’s a great app , simply beautiful design, easy to read and for my daily workout perfect 👍 so far the “how I feel “ suggesting was right and at the point . One wish to the developer please make a complication for the Siri Watchface then I will rate TrainingToday with 6 stars ✨😃 great job keep going 👍

Does what it says!

Agree with the other reviews. The watch app does what it says.
It would be nice to have the same or expanded charts on the phone app too.
And it should probably prompt for the health app permissions at the beginning. After that is complete it just works.

By

Simple and insightful

The Watch app is far more useful than the companion app. It’s really great to see TrainingToday ’s recommendations which, interestingly enough, coincide with how “I feel.” Would love to be able to see historical data and trends so I can see how I’ve been doing.

By

Recovery

Great app so far, I’ve been looking for an Apple Watch alternative to whoop or Garmin body battery for years and this appears to be the ticket. It would be nice if it could also include some kind of metrics related to the o2 readings as well.

By

so far so good

looking forward to using this long term and really getting the benefits of training and HRV.

By

Needs improvements

It fails to ask for access and complains about not having permission...

Once you fix it manually, it seems to do what it sets out to do.

By

One of a kind, useful, and simple

One of a kind and simple. I love the concept! Would be great to see chart & details on phone as well as the watch is small but this is a solid start.

By

Not quite sure I understand it’s usefulness yet, but it’s very well designed

Going to try it out and see how I like it, but it’s a solid app thus far, even if the RTT concept isn’t something I follow just yet.

By

Works well

I like the real-time update that the watch complication provides and find that the presented recovery value tracks with my perceived stress level and another HRV app I use.

By

The best

I have tried them all and this is one of the best. Highly recommend!!!

By

Battery issues

Since installing TrainingToday (the only new app I’ve installed), my Series 5 Cellular Apple Watch went from using 50% of battery in 24 hours to lasting less then 10 hours.
