4.6 out of 5
Not a tutor app

Doesn’t recognize suffix issues, doesn’t give enough time to sound out words, has really lame encouragements, gave credit for wrong answers that it recognized as wrong in comprehension test, tested comprehension only using explicitly provided information (like what kind of animal did X, not why did the animal do that), did not adjust text difficulty after updating students levels, didn’t explain the phonetics behind a word that was read incorrectly (I assume it wants the user to just memorize every word in the whole word memorization). Is it best of breed for what it does? Yes. Is it a tool for learning how to read? No. Does it test comprehension? Not really. Does it tutor in a way that improves reading (and not just sight word building)? No. I don’t think you’ll see any efficacy studies coming from them. It’s an app for reading with simple test to make sure you were paying attention (not comprehending) and an expensive one at that.

Needs Work

As a homeschool mom of a child with dyslexia, I really loved the idea of Readability. It seemed like it would be something my son could independently do and build his confidence in reading. Instead, it left him incredibly frustrated and feeling defeated. The AI didn’t give him chances to sound out the words, there was delays in switching between the mic and speaker, and if he said something slightly close to what the word actually was it would just continue on and not correct. Even after messing with the settings in hopes of remedying the situation it’s still continued to be a problem. It would be really nice if this initially started helping children learn to sound out words versus just jumping in and reading the books in hopes that they’ll figure it out how to do so. I’m also incredibly disappointed that there isn’t a setting to make it properly fit on Chromebook screens. We will definitely be looking for something that doesn’t leave us both screaming at the Chromebook in hopes the AI will actually work.

Great concept but apps not there yet

Homeschool mom here with a struggling reader. I love the concept of Readability but Readability needs a lot of work. It doesn’t give the reader enough time to sound out the words, when the reader does sound out the word Readability would register the first letter sound of the word and Readability would register the word as if the child said it when they didn’t and Readability would move on to the next word. It would take sounds or noises and register it ad a word and then move on. Readability didn’t give my child enough time to figure out the word and would give him the answer. Which I don’t mind but I would rather my child figure out the word himself and Readability not give the answer unless my child taps on the word himself asking for assistance. The books also are not great quality. My son became frustrated with Readability within 5 min of using it for the first time, and that is the worst thing for a struggling reader. I’m teaching my child to have grace with himself cause he has dyslexia and adhd so reading does not come easy for him and he can get discouraged and frustrated really fast, and I want him to love to read. If they get easily frustrated or bored then he won’t enjoy to read. Your asking way too much money for you app when it needs a lot of work.

I really WANT to love this app.

As the title says…I really WANT to love Readability. I just like it. For my struggling readers, I thought this would be a came changer. While it does encourage them to read more, it needs some fine tuning. It will act as if my child reads a word correctly, when they don’t. It also acts as if my child reads a word incorrectly, when they don’t. Additionally, it does this when my child says a contraction when the word is actually broken up and vice versa. It does this with plural words as well. The comprehension is lacking. My child got the answer to the question correct, but answered plurally versus singularly, and it said he was incorrect (until he said it the way the answer was programmed). We would love to continue Readability, and hope the developers improve its accuracy, however we will not pay $20 monthly for a program with many quirks that need ironed out.

Great Concept, Needs Work

Readability is developed to work a lot like a parent reading with a child. There to help when the child gets stumped, but lets them read independently until they need help. The improvements I would make are extending the time Readability gives the child to say or sound out the words. The listening engine needs work as it frequently counts a word on only one letter sound when a child is attempting to sound out a word. So, it frequently jumped ahead on my child to the next word. I also think the page should be read to the child after they read it independently to improve the child’s concept of the sentences’ cadences. Overall, I think the concept is absolutely wonderful, but a few minor changes could make a considerable difference in impact.

Great app

My son is autistic and dyslexic and this is the first app I have found that he is actually willing to spend some time on. The only reason that I didn’t give it a 5 star rating is because despite the fact that there is a choice of background color for Readability and readers, there is no option for the color used to highlight the text that the child is reading. It is set to blue and my son has a lot of trouble reading the words surrounded by this color. It is common for people with reading differences to need options for the color surrounding the text in order for it to be easier to read so I suggest adding this feature! As much as I like Readability otherwise, we might have to consider discontinuing our use of it if this feature is not added because my son finds this issue too frustrating.

Good

Hi I’m an intervention reading teacher. I used Readability with my students and they enjoyed it. Sometimes Readability couldn’t understand their speech, and the kids got mad at Readability for that. But otherwise, the reading levels seemed appropriate for what they were working on. I paid for Readability after the trial with my own money til the end of the school year, because it’s such a pain to get reimbursed from administration for it. Maybe the developers could create an educational marker payment option where teachers could get their schools to pay for it instead of teachers paying through Readability Store. And have different kid profiles.
Anyway, it’s a pretty good app. The monthly fee is high in my opinion.

Great Asset for struggling reader

If your child is reluctant to read at all I would highly recommend Readability. While my child did not have a dyslexia diagnosis he was more delayed with his reading and showed little interest. Readability was fun for him. He looked forward to reading with Readability each day. I was able to change the font and other features which made a big difference in his reading speed. I really appreciated the objective graphics that Readability records such as rate of reading, comprehension, and accuracy. This helped me to focus on the areas of reading that needed more encouragement. Readability was a great help to us and we would recommend it to others as well.

Best of this type of tech

Having an app listen for accuracy and provide feedback is a tall order. Although this will not replace a person it’s the next best thing. Are there times Readability does not register what your child is saying and cause frustration? Yes. Is it still worth it? Yes. The benefits of Readability far exceed the hiccups. If your struggling to stay accountable with reading with your children nightly I urge you to try Readability. My kids are reading more than they ever have which is so important in developing fluent readers. The data sent to my app keeps me on track in keeping them on track and helps me stay informed on how they are doing. The ability to have 3 readers for one price is a plus as well as all the accessibility features that allow my child with a learning disability make the changes needed to help her excel. My kids enjoy the wide range of reading material. Love Readability and am excited to see the tech in this area grow in efficiency and accuracy.

We really like this app

We haven't been using Readability for very long, but so far, we absolutely adore it. My children are more engaged and interested in reading. As a mother of kids with special needs who battle daily with Apraxia and Dyslexia, I can clearly see the improvements and the immense effort that has been put into Readability. My only suggestion would be to replace the phrase "Do your best to read" with something more encouraging like "Keep trying, you're doing great, let's aim even higher" or "You're putting in so much effort, we can do even better." There are times when my son responds to the AI with, "I'm really trying," so it seems he doesn't quite resonate with the current prompt. But apart from that, we absolutely adore Readability .

Fabulous little reading app

Readability is a hit (after some initial tweaking to get the correct levels) for our struggling 3rd grader and very advanced Kindergarten readers. It highlights words that are skipped or very mispronounced so that the child can see which word they missed. They can tap on it and the tutor voice will read the word for them and then prompt them to restart from there. Readability is best for a child that knows how to read, but, needs a bit of extra read aloud practice. The AI comprehension check is still a tiny bit fussy in that it wants a specific phrase “the silly green frog” instead of “the frog” / “silly frog” etc, so, kids do need some encouragement at first to remember to say the exact phrase. Otherwise - an excellent app and a huge hit in our house!

Not useful

It doesn’t correct mispronunciations. In fact, it doesn’t pronounce some words correctly either. The comprehension is useless, as it doesn’t take incorrect answers. It will give the answer to you at some point. This means comprehension is always 100%. The statistics reports are never accurate, i set goal of 60 mins daily and 300 mins weekly. The report has goal of 1200 mins weekly.

The good part is it sometimes highlights skipped words, it counts words per minutes and it has had good book content so far. Books appear to be age appropriate.

While there are “good” points for Readability , it would warrant 5 stars for a free app. This is not worth $20 a month. It gets 1 star for missing out on the most important items needed for reading, coaching, evaluating comprehension and tracking progress.

It’s like personal reading coach 🤩

As a busy mom, I cannot express how much RedAbility has helped my son improve his reading skills while saving me a ton of time! He is a non-native English speaker, and reading in English was a real struggle for him. I always felt guilty that I couldn’t guide him properly, but Readability changed everything.

The system is amazing—he reads aloud, and Readability listens, corrects his mistakes, and even helps with pronunciation. If he gets stuck on a word, the tutor reads it for him. It’s like having a personal reading coach 24/7! The best part? I don’t have to sit next to him the whole time—he learns independently, and I see real progress.

Since using RedAbility, his confidence has skyrocketed, and his school performance has noticeably improved. I highly recommend Readability to any parent with a child struggling to read in English. It’s an absolute game-changer!

Amazing app! My 5 year old wants to read now!

My husband asked me "what changed?" And it's Readability! We have tried other heavily marketed competitors and this was the first one our anti-reading kiddo thrived on. The features are amazing, not buggy, and the parent app/report is wonderful. Readability has allowed our kiddo to feel confident in her reading, and we can track her progress. I am SO happy we found Readability. I never write reviews and I also never buy apps but this one is SO worth the investment! We will definitely be keeping it after our trial is up!

We use Readability for her to "buy" her screen time for the day. There's tons of books for her to choose from and the AI is patient enough to give her a chance to read the word herself.

It's really taken our kiddo from barely being able to read in class to reading multiple books on her own.

If you use It, they will read!

I discovered Readability in my quest to have my students increase their fluency. Little did I know at the time the profound impact it would have on them. One student who was a non-verbal when he first entered my classroom was now reading upwards of 50 WCPM (words correct per minute). You have to take care and accept Readability for what it does, not what you wish it would do. I have found using a gaming headset works best. It cleans up background noise that may inhibit the “AI” from discerning what your child is saying. It also eliminates distracting noise rom your child an allows them to focus. When I read other reviews complaining, I have to laugh. Why? It’s not perfect, none of us are either, by the way! The answer to the question you want to know is does it work and improve your child’s fluency? As someone who uses it daily ion his classroom, the answer is unequivocally “YES!”

Game changer

To say Readability is amazing is an absolute understatement. My child in third grade has been with a reading tutor since first grade. This year, the school pulled us aside to let us know that there is a possibility he may have to be held back because of his reading level. even though he had been with a tutor for the last two years, he was still reading at a first grade level. We struggled to find something that really helped, we tried everything. I then stumbled across Readability in the last ditch effort. In four months of using Readability , his improvement has been so drastic that the school called us and wanting to know what we had done. We showed them Readability and explained how it worked. The school system is now purchasing Readability and instituting it in their reading program not just for tutor base, for early reading education as well. I cannot give this review 100 stars or I would.

Great way to make reading fun!

My son is 8 and struggling with reading. He has been in different interventions at school and had online reading classes. Readability is the best experience he has had with reading so far! He loves the selection of books and the stars/badges he can earn! I also think he has more confidence just knowing he can touch a word to have it read to him. His fluency is getting better with Readability for practice and he actually ASKS to READ on this app. Before Readability a suggestion of reading often brought on tears. The AI is pretty good and I love the parent dashboard and progress monitoring. Give this a try! Readability is great!!!
