Skeptical at first, but love it!!

I was a bit skeptical because of the overall meh reviews, but after looking through all the 1 star reviews I wanted to give it a go. I absolutely love StuffThatWorks . They do have a privacy agreement. The information is safe and nothing is shared within the communities without consent, and information isn’t sold. The surveys are admittedly long, but I love that! Having THAT much more detail and overall information for every condition is so important to find trends in what most likely will or won’t help with treatment/pain/symptoms. I don’t know anyone else personally who has CRPS, so having a little community of people to view shared symptoms and feelings about the condition, as well as seeing how common depression/PTSD was as a comorbidity, made me feel a bit of relief. The user base is admittedly limited simply because of the amount of users putting in their info isn’t massive, but you can still find overall trends for most efficient and most common treatments. The #1 most effective treatment was one I had considered in the past, but ultimately decided against. I plan to revisit it now after seeing how it has made a difference for others, because any relief with CRPS is huge. Again, I love StuffThatWorks. It will only continue to improve as it grows!

Jump through hoops just to join a community

I was so excited when I found StuffThatWorks because I have multiple debilitating illnesses and it’s difficult to find others who have the same or similar illnesses. However when I went to join my first community, it was making me jump through hoops by answering over 50 questions just to get started (and over 60 in some of the more common illness communities). This wouldn’t have been a huge deal whatsoever if I only had one illness, but I have several illnesses and had several communities I was excited to join but I would have had to fill out hundreds of questions by time I joined them all.

I understand wanting to have people prove the validity of their illness so not everyone who doesn’t have the illness/care for someone with the illness is joining, but over 50 questions is a bit much, if not rather insulting, since you shouldn’t need to answer dozens upon dozens of questions to prove you’re not lying. It looked like a very well designed and thought out app, but you shouldn’t have to answer so many questions just to get in. A handful of specific questions would have sufficed such as when were you diagnosed, what are your symptoms, etc., etc.. The questions weren’t anything hard, but just extremely time consuming if you’re joining multiple communities.

Great in concept, so so in execution.

The idea is awesome. It’s full of great little communities and I love the research aspect of it. But there are a few issues with the UI. For one, you can’t go to your profile and view your posts and you don’t get notifications in StuffThatWorks itself. When you post a poll, you can’t view the notes (aka comments) and it disappears entirely from your view unless you check your email, basically making it basically useless. The same goes for posts. It’s incredibly hard to search through the list of posts as they are sorted seemingly randomly, and there’s no option to sort by newest.

I think StuffThatWorks could genuinely become one of the best support systems for disabled people, if only it acted more like other social medias.

BRILLIANT idea

I recently discovered StuffThatWorks, and in doing so, I couldn’t help but wish that I knew of it sooner.

A little over three years ago, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. This left me feeling very overwhelmed, lost, and confused on how to go about managing my condition. I felt like there was nobody I could turn to in my immediate circle for help, because no one else shared the same diagnosis. That’s why I’ve become such a huge fan of StuffThatWorks! It’s provided me with the opportunity to hear from others with the same condition about what treatments work and what treatments don’t work for them. It’s also great to receive advice from people who know what you’re going through, and this helps me feel less alone in my journey!

Fills a really important niche!!

As a biology student with chronic illnesses, I’ve been kind of frustrated by the disorganization of chronic illness forums for a while, and this is a great solution!! It still allows people to share the more subjective personal experiences and opinions that are so important when dealing with less-studied issues, but also considers a lot of objective information. I also like how everyone’s comorbidities or favorite treatments are shown in a formal ranking, because on other platforms, you have to figure that out by how many comments you see, and that can be really skewed by who comments more often.

Thankful

I’m honestly thankful for StuffThatWorks- I have so many health conditions and issues and new ones popping up all the time. I usually only ever had google to research my condition and doctors don’t take enough time with you to go through it and that’s where stuff that works comes into play. It’s hearing the real and authentic stories and reviews from other people who are going through the same condition that helps me test out new treatments and also learn more about the side effects of others. Im on StuffThatWorks all the time now! Currently on the psoriasis, acne, and dermatographia one now.

So informative!

I was diagnosed with my illness a few months ago and trying to learn about and navigate my not well known condition felt so overwhelming. I came across this app and loved it instantly. Finding people with the same condition as you in real life can be so difficult and harder to connect with people. Being able to connect with people who know exactly what I’m going through has helped me understand and navigate my condition. I’m a known advocate for my disability and having this resource has been so helpful in educating others as well as myself. I love it!

Love this app!

I love that StuffThatWorks has different communities for each illness. As a patient you can share what you’ve tried and connect with others who have similar experiences which is so amazing especially considering how isolating chronic illness can be. It was especially helpful when I had side effects from a new medication and my doctor hadn’t seen anything like that before. With the help of StuffThatWorks, I found other people on the same med who experienced the same thing and learned how they managed it. Would highly recommend using this!

Amazing Community to be apart

I’ve found it so helpful personally! My diagnosis of a chronic illness 11 years ago was rough and I wish I had something like this is in the beginning. Hitting google to find information about it and it resulted in even more fear. Being able to connect with others who go through what you go through is nice and being able to ask questions with others who can relate what you experience is helpful in learning how to navigate it and some ideas to try to help yourself

Helpful in finding treatments

Having an under researched or rare condition means a lot of physicians aren’t familiar with it. The burden often then falls on the patient to research and try treatments until they find one that works.

Stuff that works compiles surveys from individuals who have the same condition as you, what treatments they’ve tried, and what’s worked best. This allows us to find treatments that actually help more quickly. It also allows us to connect with a community, as having a chronic illness can be isolating.

Great for treatment ideas

I have Ehlers-Danlos, and there is no doctor or specialist in my city who know about EDS. With this app, I’ve found treatment ideas from the worldwide EDS community and brought those ideas to my doctor to further check them out. StuffThatWorks is beautiful, easy to use, and intuitive, and almost two years into using it, it seems like they are always trying to add more things to make the platform better and more useful to us. I love what STW is doing for the chronic illness community.

Helpful Insights & Connections

I honestly don’t have anything negative to say about StuffThatWorks. The initial survey, while extensive, ensures that you are getting the best information about how other people are living with your diagnoses. I love the map feature and being able to locate people based on their similarity of you. I really appreciate that I have the chance to reach out to those people and ask questions. For me StuffThatWorks was a game changer and I am so thankful I stumbled upon it.

Great for people with rare conditions

A year ago I was diagnosed with a rare condition and struggled to find resources about it online. I found the Stuff That Works app through instagram ads, and it’s been incredibly helpful. I even told my doctor about information I learned from the crowdsourced data, and he changed my care plan because of it. Additionally, the more people that use StuffThatWorks, the more useful it gets. So I encourage you to download it today!

So much more helpful than other resources

The organization of StuffThatWorks is so much easier for me to navigate than having to be on separate forums on other platforms where treatments and questions are all mixed together. It’s really easy to understand and I like the intro questions they ask before you join a specific group. I’m definitely telling my doctors about StuffThatWorks as well, I think they could really benefit from it.

Great app and very user friendly!

I heard of this app in the past and was excited to download StuffThatWorks . I have multiple mental health diagnoses and I work in mental health and found that the amount of information available on StuffThatWorks is amazing. It can feel very isolating and overwhelming when you first get a diagnosis, but knowing what’s been helpful for other people can be very validating to know that I’m doing the right things to take care of myself.

This app has helped me a lot!

I was recently diagnosed with POTs and honestly don’t know enough about it - because of StuffThatWorks I feel like I know so much more now and feel like I have a space I can continue to learn more and ask people in my community any questions I have. It has also shown me ideas to try when I need to feel better. I love that it also includes mental health conditions. Overall I’d give it more than 5 stars if I could!

Ingenious idea

StuffThatWorks is a life saver to those with chronic conditions. Instead of having to sift through tons of web pages all saying different treatments, this app gathers all this info into one place. You can really see what is effective and what isn’t. You do have to fill out some surveys if you want to join certain communities but this is only so that StuffThatWorks creators have the most comprehensive data. Community aspect is nice too! Keep up the great work.

I’ve been using STW for years and it’s only getting better!

Stuff that works has helped me find so many communities for my illnesses. Having any type of illness can be isolating, but not only does stuff that works provide you a great community of support, but discussion boards, treatment plans that have worked from actual patients data being received! It’s definitely a game changer and I literally tell everyone I know about it!

No more gaslighting from doctors!

I’ve had doctors literally tell me my symptoms are all in my head… and had I believed them, I may never have gotten the treatment I actually needed. StuffThatWorks & website provide answers that validate what I go through regularly, THANKFULLY affirming that I’m NOT crazy and not alone either!!! I’m so thankful to be able to have a resource like this provide not only amazing information, but comfort during the times I need it most!!!
