4.2 out of 5
Unable to search words

2 issues.

1, unable to download dictionary via cellular. Only WiFi download allowed. I don’t have WiFi.
2, unable to input words in search bar. This make Dictionaries unusable.

I’ll ask for refund.

Cannot migrate from my purchased duct

Purchased WISDOM2 Japanese English dictionary for $30+ and now they deprecated the old app and offered a new one. Unfortunately I’m not able to migrate my purchase to this new app. Really crappy.

WARNING about this developer

Some users have reported here that this app they've purchased have become unavailable to reinstall. I bought a Collins Spanish Dictionary from Cole Zhu Inc that had exactly the same interface as these ones from Monokakido. When I replaced my iPad and tried to access Dictionaries on my new iPad I got an error saying Dictionaries was "currently unavailable in your App Store." This is totally unacceptable for a dictionary app. I don't know if Monokakido changed its name from Cole Zhu Inc or bought the dictionary interface, but they should have given some thought to existing users. And SHAME on Apple for not standing by us and making sure that apps remain available to users who buy them. I'm totally disgusted after this experience. No wonder people don't want to pay for dictionary apps. It's really the worst kind of customer service, and it's about more than the money when it would be so easy for Apple to provide Dictionaries to people who paid for it.

Can’t download any content !

Hi, I am a guy who’s currently working in mainland China.
I love Dictionaries a lot and have purchased 37 this app already, recently I reset my iPad and started to download the content again but I just can’t ! Each time I try to download, it says an unknown error occurred. (Btw there is a lot of storage left so I am sure it’s Dictionaries ’s problem)
Downloading has always worked badly .. but now it stopped working completely

OALD

I wanted to buy it but noticed it works online. Why wouldn’t you add full offline support for this one? I read when I go somewhere and I won’t be able to listen examples only a word, why? I have a lot of memory on my phone and what use of it.

Good dictionary, OK app

I have the 三省堂 dictionary, and the dictionary content is clear and informative. The search in this digital version is not great.

For example if you try to look up 遺す, it’s impossible to find. Once you learn from some other dictionary that it’s read のこす and also written 残す, you can find the perfectly good entry for the word. And the actual entry clearly mentions 遺す as an alternate spelling, so that’s an issue with Dictionaries and not the dictionary content.

The slick search-by-selection feature is also very finicky in the presence of any inflection, often finding no results so you have to go out to the main search screen. When it works, though, it’s joyously smooth and fast.

Broken app cannot download

Hope u guys support the original standalone version Collins doc I purchased On my iPad thx.

Great App, Missing Features

Been using Dictionaries for a long time, and I definitely think it is a huge improvement over the standalone dictionary apps that existed before it. The vast number of this app available in Dictionaries is great too. I do feel that there are a few things that could be improved though.

I’d like to see a feature implemented into the settings of Dictionaries that will allow a user to disable the auto-lock screen feature on the iPhone/iPad while Dictionaries is open. Sometimes I have Dictionaries open while I’m doing another task, and it’s quite annoying to have continuously unlock my phone while trying to reference something in a dictionary in Dictionaries . Most other dictionary apps have this feature, so I’m puzzled as to why it doesn’t exist in Dictionaries.

I’d also like to see a feature implemented into Dictionaries that would allow the user to define custom categories with different groups of this app. In the current app, I have to change from 国語 to アクセント to see the entry for a word in the NHK accent dictionary after looking at the 国語 this app I have. I’d like to be able to define a group of mixed category this app (大辞林、新明海、and NHK for example) to be searched together. Then it wouldn’t be necessary to change between the preset categories to reference entries in across different types of this app.

Overall, this is the best dictionary app on Dictionaries Store, especially for Japanese learners. I hope my recommendations will be considered for future updates, especially the disable lock screen feature, as that is the worst part of using Dictionaries in its current state.

IMPORTANT FEEDBACK.

In the OALD 9th edition, whenever I look up a verb, the “verb forms” section occupies the entire screen, so I have to collapse it every single time, this is PAINFUL! I would like it to show in COLLAPSED as default.

“Verb forms” just doesn’t add that much value for it to occupy the ENTIRE SCREEN by default. So PLEASE change this. It would improve my experience SO MUCH!!!

Thank you for developing an overall GREAT APP!! And listening to customer feedback!

Please turn off the function of auto switching keyboard languages

I love Dictionaries but the auto switching of keyboard language is annoying. If it’s a CJJC dictionary, it will keep changing back to Chinese keyboard but I want to keep using Japanese keyboard. Please give me the option to turn this off.

Bookmark Enhancement

Swift and useful dictionary app. But the bookmark function seems way too primitive and 2 basic features are needed:
1. User’s note for bookmarked item;
2. Bookmark export as csv file (including user’s notes).

Nice APP!

But a spotlight integration would be even better

Thanks for fixing the problem

Now I could restore and download the dictionary.

Perfect

Monokakido’s app spoils me. It’s perfect. It’s beautiful, easy to use, and full of pleasant surprises. I’ve purchased many this app from them and have never regretted any. Compared to quality printed this app, they are very affordable and there is simply no downside to buying digital. Only upside - it’s with you on all devices, you can look at your history to learn better, and the pattern based search makes finding things far easier than paper.

And Monokakido doesn’t stand still. New this app are released often. Just as one example, I looked today to see that my favorite grammar dictionary was just added and is on sale. It’s almost as if the company is reading my mind.

I hope Monokakido considers publishing more of the world’s this app over time. Their style, attention to detail, and love for this app make Dictionaries a true gem.

Absolutely fantastic app!

Finally, a dictionary and grammar app with a stunning interface, seamless interoperability between the purchased modules, and overall terrific UX. Thanks for not including nasty telemetry or trackers. Excellent job. I've purchased multiple this app as in-app purchases and recommended Dictionaries to friends interested in acquiring Oxford University Press this app.

Errors

I cannot restore or update this app that I bought. It says there is an unexpected error and I need to force restart iOS. I did force restart many times, but it does not work. I have plenty free storage space left, so that should not be the problem.

Also, sync issues: devices do not have the exact same number of bookmarks.

Best 電子辞書

Any serious student of Japanese needs a real dictionary. Jim Breen’s is a good resource but lacks the depth that is needed for serious study. Japan has a well developed dictionary market and Dictionaries unites a variety of them in one easy interface. The prices are fair for the amount of content and detail in these books. For a bilingual, Random House 英和 is actually one of the better English resources I’ve found on iOS due to its extensive etymology information lacking in most American alternatives.

Best Japanese Learning and Reference App

This application works so well when you have multiple high quality this app that you will never want to use anything else again! They recently added a grammar dictonary as well. So when you input something to look up, you are given a whole range of knowledge depending on what books you purchase in Dictionaries . It is fast and well polished and it only gets better as time goes on with more book options being added all the time. This is the one app that keeps me on Apple devices!

INDISPENSABLE tool for a lifelong Japanese learner and translator!

Things I love:
-Clean design, very easy to use and lots of visibility and other settings (font size, search order)
-AMAZING content (everything from learners this app to big expensive unabridged this app like Reader's, Random House, and Kenkyusha, and the Robert French-Japanese this app). This has replaced my trusty old Casio Electronic Dictionary.
-One purchase is shareable between all devices-- I use Dictionaries and its contents on my iphone, ipad, and Mac, syncing seamlessly.
-Great support: whenever I have had any issues, I get polite and helpful replies from the Japanese staff.
Things that could get better:
-Just keep adding content. The Kanjigen kanji dictionary, and the Kenkyusha Shin Ei-Wa Daijiten are two that I would be very excited about.
-To people who aren't used to spending money on a dictionary, relying on free dictionary databases, or the internet, I would just say that I've found the quality of definitions and examples to always be worth the price in the long run!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I have purchased seven dictionaries and none of them can be installed

Great app I must say, tried force restart device for about an hour, didn’t work, great experience otherwise... hope there is way to fix it permanently.
