Good Concept. But flawed grasp of how the singing voice functions.

It’s okay and a useful tool. But is a bit short sighted when considering how different voices work. And has a hard time reconciling heathy vibrato in pitch variation and healthy tessitura for different singers. Just because C major is easy to play on the pink does not make it an easy key to sing in. Especially if you have a high tonic. And simple octave displacement does not help because it forces the singer to use an uncomfortably low place to make room for the whole exercise costing them precious points.

Good app concept. Flawed execution. Would like to see a rework.

NO VIBRATO ALLOWED!!!!!!!!

Ella is kind of ridiculous because it doesn’t let you have any sort of vibrato at all. It makes you sing it completely straight tone, and as a professional singer, that’s not only hard to do, but just plain wrong technique. The Exercises are fun and the progression of them is good for students, but if you want to have young students do these exercises, Singing straight tone like that isn’t healthy for young singers to get in the habit of doing. If you have vibrato it takes off points for “intonation” as it reads vibrato as wrong notes. Not a good app for young singers or to work on proper technique!!!!

Game, not training

I came here after using Binary Guilt Software’s incredible reading and rhythm training apps to learn to sight read on guitar. I was hoping for some thing similarly well organized for teaching you to sight sing. Instead, this is organize more like a freemium game app. It has a bunch of exercises, but they are not organized in a way that leads you through learning to sight-sing. They are incredibly short, and there is no beginner progression.

Is my keyboard out if tune, or is the scoring system in the app bogus?

Mixed feelings. I love the idea of an ear training app that makes me sing rather than just identifying what I hear (earpeggio). But the scoring system is clearly bogus... I used my keyboard and the pitch needle was always dead center but the scores were only in the 75 range. As long as you don't care so much about the actual score, Ella should be pretty useful.

Good for training

I’ve been enjoying this so far. However, I have noticed a bug of some sorts when using it.

A few times, I have gotten two stars on a level, and wanted to try again to go for three stars. When I did, I still was getting scores in the 70s and 80s, and yet my accuracy was bugged to stay at 100 and it awarded me the 3 stars anyways. It didn’t really feel earned. I’ve looked into it, and it only seems to happen when I hit “try again”, and leaving the level and coming back seems to reset it back to normal.

Other than that, I have been enjoying Ella and plan to use it occasionally to keep my aural skills up outside of school.

Great app - not just for voice

I have been playing the flute for two years but still sometimes struggle with sight reading and playing in tune and with good tone right off the bat (I have to play a few notes to make sure my tone is right). I tried apps made for instruments and flutes specifically, but they all seem to not work or require pricey subscriptions to access any of the useful features. I can’t vouch for other instruments (like a sax or violin), but Ella works great for the flute. It is helping me improve my sight reading and I set the range for what I am less comfortable playing so I get more practice with that. It is a really clean app design with a really good (and free) interface!

Sight reading help

Definitely helps with sight reading. I learned music by ear in the formative years of my life using the Yamaha method for piano. I did not start sight reading until I started violin at the age of 12, but I didn’t sight read with the notes in mind, it was more so related to where I put my fingers when in first position. I’ve never been great with singing, but practicing singing the note names as I sight read is very helpful and I’m sure it will translate to playing and sight reading music for other instruments.

Great for Aural Skills

I’m a university student at a music school and Ella gives you immediate feed back when practicing aural skills. It rates your singing based on tone, accuracy and overall Intonation. Ella is ahead of all other apps and It makes you feel like sighting singing is a little bit like a game Instead if chore. It’s great for vocalists or non/vocals who are trying to improve there sight singing download this today!

Amazing App!!!

I am a musician who used to use SRF to practice for auditions and just to get better at sight reading, and Ella is just as good for free! I appreciate that the creators of Ella made this app a free tool to help educate and improve aspiring musicians all over the world with sight reading. Thank you so much this app! ❤️❤️❤️

Great app

Why only 26 players in the leader board? I’m not training for singing but learning music theory so I’m looking for an app to improve my sight singing skills. Ella has exercises for arpeggios and scales and very well designed for feedbacks. Sight singing is so neglected but just as important as eat training if not more.

I can’t believe this is a free

An fun and good use of time for practicing sight-singing. I had syncing issues at first between my iPhone and Apple Silicon MacBook, but the next time I opened Ella on my iPhone, everything was synced!
