I’m a big fan of the new pocket radar smart coach and it’s app, and I’m recommending it to my softball and baseball friends!
I’ve used the ball coach radar product for a few years, and it has worked great for getting pitching speeds and ball exit speeds off the Tee. But the new pocket radar smart coach takes it to a new level, AND it’s relatively cheap and easy to use! We use it mainly for hitting and getting ball exit speeds, but I think it would be great for pitching as well.
As a part of our daily hitting routine, after we have worked on specific body movements (i.e., the mirror) or hitting drills, we will hit off the Tee and measure ball exit speed. We also use it for front toss as well. Here’s what I love about the new pocket radar smart coach: It syncs up to my iPad, and has audio that calls out the speed, and/or it displays the speed (big and easy to read) on the actual iPad. As a result, my daughter gets instant feedback on the ball exit speed. It also tracks these speeds for the session, and I can easily download the speeds after each session. It also tracks them over time in PocketRadar . Here’s the cool part, when they hit a personal best or meet their session goal, we can celebrate right then and there with high fives and ice cream. She says hitting practice is much more fun this way!
After only 2 weeks, the results are improving dramatically. Her average ball exit speed for a practice session has improved by 6 mph and her personal best exit speed by 3 mph. Instant feedback + fun energy + goals = Big Improvements.
It gets better, because the iPad app also allows me to videotape her swings for later analysis, which I can then import into Coach’s eye. What’s cool, is that the speed gets overlaid onto the actual video. I like comparing her best swings to her slower swings, looking for differences in technique. For example, in her best swings, she definitely has the “hips before hands” working, and in her slower swings, she gets a little “handsy” or leading with her hands. I’m just bummed I didn’t capture her latest personal best on video!
We actually just came up with a new hitting game that also includes launch angles, and my daughter and her friends had a blast playing it (full credit to Greg Jones who is the originator of this game!). In my batting cage, we have launch angle markers (ropes) in the cage, so we know if a hit is a 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30+ degree launch angle. If the player hits their goal speed at a 15 to 25 degree launch angle, they get 5 points. If they hit their goal speed but miss the 15 to 25 degree launch angle, they only get 1 or 2 points. As a result, you guessed it, they started routinely hitting their goal speeds at a 15 to 25 degree launch angle.
The bottom line is that the new pocket radar smart coach and it’s app are fun to use, easy to use, and its making hitting practice more fun and productive!

PS – I’ve called the company for help for 2 times, and both times they were very helpful and I was treated like a MLB coach!
