Underway: NYC Subway Transit Reviews

Underway is fantastic and has made my subway experience a lot better. It includes the official subway map, MTA service advisories, and subway arrival times in one clean, user friendly app. There are ads but they are minimal and hardly take away from the user experience.

Because of this app, I no longer need to cram myself into a crowded A train if I see there’s another one coming in 2 minutes... or run to the station to catch the G train if I see it’s not coming for another 7 minutes...

I definitely recommend Underway to anyone who rides the subway in NYC.

Underway is perfect, except it would be great to have a fifth icon ("shortcuts" or “favorites”) which would open a layer screen where you can get to all your frequently used stations with a single click, instead of having to scroll around the map.
Updated to respond to the developer: For those of us who understand how to use Siri Shortcuts but prefer not to use them (for various reasons) it would be great to have the ability to access our frequently used stations with two taps inside Underway (Favorites -> station name).

Underway is fantastic. You can open it and see what you need to see in less than 10 seconds. It’s awesome when a local train pulls up and you quickly wanna see how long until the express comes. Every other app has you clicking and loading and the train leaves before you find out the express isn’t coming for 10 minutes. Shoulda took that local.

My only complaint is that the pro version is so expensive, I want to support the developer but $6 a month is a lot.

Must have app for all New Yorkers. Seriously. It’s helped figure out how fast I need to hustle for the next train, plan my transfers efficiently within the station, and overall peace of mind in what is the most hectic public transportation system in the country. It’s crazy accurate and always reliable. I love being able to click and see the arrival times and have the map all in the same view. A++

For the stations that have the F and the G running there, can you add “/Queens bound” next to the Manhattan bound side of the departure times so that it is more accurate for the G, since it doesn’t go to Manhattan. Also the issue happens at Hoyt schermerhorn as well

Very straight forward app with a map, which includes long term updates; statuses; and arrival times (only some of which are real time).
It’s def the most user friendly nyc subway app I’ve come across, mostly because it’s free of clutter and pop up ads.
Just the kind of app I was looking for a long time.

It’s a good, clean app. Very straightforward and easy to use. However the biggest drawback is, it doesn’t contain some information or it goes blank. For example, it’s still missing the 7 train times even though the MTA subway time data has it and I was just using it for the F and there was no downtown information when it is available on the subway time. If this would get fixed, it would be one of my favorite apps.

Underway is already good enough but having service notifications would make it even better.

Mostly even tho i like Underway , i decided to write because it's been VERY flaky with the Q train. For instance (only 1 of several instances) this eve it said 4 min, I walk to stop and says 2 min--fine. After elevator i arrive at track and it says 5 min. I wait. 2nd F train arrives after a bit and now app says Q 7 min. I get on F train instead. Q shows up as F train doors close on me. Super aggravating!

Service status still shows weekend work during the week (since last update). Please fix. Otherwise great!

Update: was a temporary issue. Developer was quick to fix. Great work!

Underway has the most straight forward interface of all the various NYC subway apps I’ve used and addresses most of my main issues with other apps:

1. Clean design
2. Real NYC subway map that’s front and center
3. Reliable, quick updating service alerts and arrivals

Number 3 is especially important because I’ve used several apps that support the same, but either take a long time to refresh or sometimes don’t update when on the go.

The only thing that would make this better is if there was an ad-free version!

I use to use iTrans but they stopped updating so I had to find a new app but none of them had real time updates that worked as well as this one. Very useful would recommend, please keep updating because it’s a great app!

Like the MTA official app, SubwayTime, this is using real-time arrival data, not scheduled nonsense. Better than the official app, this one puts all the arrival clocks for every platform in a station on 1 screen, making it substantially more useful.

Underway gets the job done. It has the most accurate schedule, plus it shows the subway map, even if you don’t have cell phone service. Great app for getting around NYC via subway.

I originally got this just to have an offline subway map for NYC. But the train times are a killer feature as well. Straight forward and to the point, this is the best subway app I’ve found for the city.

Native New Yorker. This is Underway I use to navigate the subways easily. I love its design because it uses the familiar subway map as the backdrop and I just have to tap the station I’m headed to.
Understandable and clean layout!

It sometimes pains me that Underway isn’t more widely used or appreciated. It’s so easy to use. I tell everyone coming to NYC not to bother with the others. this app is it!

Love Underway , it’s intuitive and smooth but the only thing missing is a widget option. I’d love to save my local line I commute with to the widget so I can see at a glance if there are any delays. Or save my local station to see the next few uptown/downtown train arrivals.

Intuitive, simple coordination of subway information. Map, status, schedules, clickable stations. I've been downloading various MTA apps for years, this is the one that made me say "finally!"

Best subway app for me as a local.
Ads aren’t intrusive, however would love an option to pay for them to go away.

We at random downloaded Underway as confused New York tourists. Underway is all you will need to navigate anyway you are going.

Life-long NYer here, and Underway just gets me. It knows exactly what I need. The clean simple facts and not all that jazz. Easy to use, and accurate!

Do you have one for buses? I'll download it if you do :)

I love Underway, saw it on tiktok knew i had to download Underway. Kinda think its a bad idea to pay for connecting trains, but Its alr because this is a good app. Maybe add busses to this to :)

I basically never review apps, but this thing is exactly what I wanted. It is extremely simple and does what it needs to, without any fluff.

I like that it just uses a normal subway map as the layout, very easy to navigate.

It has been a godsend for timing trains and altering course mid trip.

Simple app taking the latest MTA map and adding information about next train for each stop. Easy to use, double tap to zoom, regularly updated. My only wish: adding Manhattan bus maps too. Subscription for paid features is very steep, but not really necessary.
