Current buyers are “beta” testers … buyer beware

This is absolutely not ready for prime time. Had I known the challenges with this system, I would have not bought it. We came back from a vacation and the system shut down the the water in the middle of a shower (looks back only maybe 7 days to determine a leak). Today our irrigation system started off first day so the system decided to shut the water off again … after 35 minutes of water flowing at 8 gpm … 280 gallons of usage. The system also tries to map the water flow to category of uses … irrigation, faucets, shower, appliances, etc … it is absolutely inaccurate. I have gone around the house turning on individual faucets or flushing toilets or running showers to “map” them … the reports continue to be highly inaccurate and I would say worthless. Had I not been getting an home owners insurance discount and had I not already spent the money for getting this professionally installed, this would have been uninstalled immediately. Buyer beware …

Rubbish required by insurance

The valves fail all the time. The power cord is flimsy and not secured to the unit, which given one of my install locations is problematic. Somehow it’s too dumb to be able to tell when no water is coming from the main vs a valve failure. All the digital system restarts and open close functions never work. You can turn it off, wait 5 minutes. Nothing happens. Close and open Flo nothing happens. I have this at 2 properties. Same issues at both. Latest iPhone software etc. just junk unreliable and overactive. The only thing it should actually be allowed to do is turn off if there’s a catastrophic amount of water loss. Honestly. Have turned down sensitivity. Have set it to learn and relearn the house. Have had it 2+ years. Take a bath - boom whole house goes off. Takes 10 tries to get the valve back on. It’s gotten to the point now where I take my phone with me into the shower when I have to get up super early and shower at an unusual time because it’s guaranteed that after 5 minutes it will shut off all my water. My insurance required it. I wish I could rip it out or find another product that is better.

Flo isn’t smart. Check elsewhere!

I’ve had the this app itself for 6 months and while it’s a great idea I think it doesn’t really work. It only shuts off 5 minutes after a leak has happened, meaning a lot of water spills before it does anything at all. That is if it detects the water. Because you run faucets and use water all at the time and after a while it just gets used to it. The only option in Flo is to “ignore” a certain alert. But I have ignored so many things, by now I fear it wouldnt even react if I had a breach somewhere. Add to that, Flo . It is really beta and requires a do over. Unlike any other smart app it does not detect wether you’re home, so every time you leave and arrive you have to set this manually!!! Needless to say I forget 95% of the time. Also it all works with message popups, and doesnt allow a lot of control. It feels limited and not smart at all. I should have looked elsewhere. There are much more intelligent solutions out there, where the developers take more care that their product actually works. This is a mess right now.

Fixture Identification Problems

I don’t really find Flo useful any more and it wasn’t that useful to begin with.

I suddenly can no longer tell what appliance is using the water. Everything is listed as Other. Which is not helpful. Especially if it says for example 300 gallons of water used. Okay, how and by what device? Was it the total for the day including toilets, showers, faucet, washing machine etc.

I dislike not being able to label devices/appliances. It could never identify the washing machine or dishwasher. And it turns off too frequently. I regularly take showers that are sometimes 15+ minutes and have done so since before I had Flo. And now suddenly, I have my water threatened to be turned off after 10 minutes, but it happens inconsistently. I don’t know what info Flo is using to determine that this particular shower is unusual. The only useful thing about it is the ability to turn the water off and on from the phone. Other than that, Flo and device are useless.

This App is really a piece of Krap, isn’t it?

Recently installed the Moen this app valve and have been trying for many hours to connect Flo to the “smart” valve. After 15-20 attempts including restarts, valve power cycles, delete/reinstall app, changing iOS device, phone call to Moen tech support - - all of which failed to rectify the problem. Next step was to attempt to add the water detector device to Flo . That process only took 20 minutes with a couple of power cycles for the sensor. Now back to the smart valve for another failed attempt or 3. Last try was to “hard reset” (20 sec hold on the valve reset button) and voila! - success! (almost…) as Flo finally got past the “Connect to this app-xxx” screen, but now Flo does not see any of myWiFi SSIDs (though they all showed up while pairing the Sensor devices) so he SSID/password had to be entered manually, which appeared to work.

5 hours to setup?? Certainly no plaudits from here !

Many false alarms

this app continues to shut off my water during normal events. I have a water softener that has run once every three weeks for the past 9 months. this app shuts off my water every time that it runs.

I also have a drip system for my backyard. The summer months required longer drip cycles. this app shut off my water every time I had a watering cycle longer than an hour. I set silence times for the this app to ignore but I must have done it incorrectly because it still shut my water off.

I haven’t had a water leak yet in my house, but the this app has shut my water off about 40+ times. I do have confidence that it will shut my water off if I DO have a leak. I just can’t say that it’s worth the many annoyances along the way. I’m not sure how many times my water softener has actually run a full cycle.

Shortcomings especially for vacation home

The water shutoff device itself works well but Flo ’s features are minimal and insufficient for real world use. If it detects unusual activity, it shuts off - great in concept. However, if a guest has an early flight and showers at 4a it will turn off so they can’t complete their shower. Combine that with only having the ability to override for 24 hours at a time for normal use (i.e., multiple showers in the home running) and it almost becomes worthless.

With 2nd homes that can be vacant during the week with guests using all weekend this means Flo and device are a huge pain. At a minimum the override options need to be 48 or 36 hours to cover weekend use of the home. Or better yet, add an App feature that allows the homeowner to proactively turn off the sensor for abnormal use while in the home since with vacation homes that aren’t used 24/7 most use is considered abnormal by the device.

Needs to be a bit more sophisticated

Flo is great for what it does: track water usage through the water monitoring device. It is frustrating that the developers don’t add key enhancements like the ability to collapse all in the list of water usage history. We should also be able to tell Flo what devices we do and do not have. For example it’s annoying to have to constantly relabel an event as shower because the device keeps calling it irrigation. If I don’t have irrigation I want to at least tell it once and never again. Flo should also offer benchmarks for similar sized properties/occupants/locations and suggestions based on community statistics. I give it three stars bc it does what it’s supposed to do, barely.

Flo Moen

I like it however, I think it should be a little easier when you have your water shut off and you are trying to figure out where to go to turn it back on. Especially in the middle of the night when you get up to wash your hands after going to the bathroom. You can’t flush the toilet but you’ve gone and use the bathroom you need to wash your hands you can’t wash your hands you need to get your phone, open your app and navigate through where you can turn your water back on. Especially for a new user. So I think that that is something that should be figured out how to go to that section more easily. Other than that, I think that Flo is pretty good.

Everything worked fine until it didn’t

About two years into having my this app, Flo read all was fine but that no water was being used. Turns out they manufactured a faulty magnet housing in the turbine that moved as water flows. They sent a remodeled one where the magnets are enclosed for free but cost me $200 to have a plumber help me fix the problem.

Now it’s up and running again and Flo is warning me every time we use water. I cannot find how to make it go into learning mode again. I paid for the help and extra warranty time but nobody is working on the weekend and in the past there wasn’t anyone to help me when I tried to use it. The only answer I got before actually calling was to email a copy of my warranty.

Having shared the problem I would have thought they’d have contacted me and sent the new model immediately with instructions on how to change it out. I expect more from Moen, a company I’ve purchased from for years and why I bought this this app.

Could use some improvement

I bought the water/temperature sensors to place around my house. One main reason I went this route was I could use the sensors for both leaks and temperatures inside my freezers so I know if they went out and have it all tied to one app. Unfortunately my chest freezer routinely runs just under 0° and Flo only allows setting to go to 0°. I get a notification almost every hour, if not more often, saying the temperature dropped below 0°. It is extremely annoying and now I find myself ignoring the alerts which isn’t good if it ends up being actually bad. Could be a simple fix so I plead the development team: please either extend the measurabletemperature to below 0° (which it clearly is measuring to as a sensor) or make the alerts so it can be set to only alert when it goes above my range, not below my range. I have 0°-32° set. I only need to know above 32°, not that my freezer is -4°. Please fix! That would make it 5 stars so far.

Good but could use more user controls

This is good for monitoring usage and very handy for turning off the valve remotely. However the threshold for auto shutoff for what is perceived as "abnormal" usage is 5 minutes. That's a lot of unabated water coming out on the even of a pipe blowout, which is what I had. It would be nice if the user were able to set the duration of continued usage before valve shutoff.

Additionally, i had a period of very low usage when Flo was learning my patterns of usage. For months now, as I have started taking longer showers I have gotten the warning of unusual usage. Almost 8 months in, I finally got a "re-train" notification. Why isn't this presented to the user on demand?

Great app to find small leaks

The MOEN this app was the best thing I added to my water system!!! Found 9 leaks with toilets and replaced the shut off valves. Fairly easy to replace yourself! Purchase from local HomeDepot store. Afterwords we ran the HealthCheck auto scheduled every night that showed “You’re Secure!”, We had no leaks. Then yesterday Flo told us we had another small leak! Checked the faucets and sure enough we found that the basement faucet had a drop of water leaking. It was accidentally not closed completely. Did a manual HealthChech and passed. Feel like I am completely in control and safe with our water system.

Well designed product and excellent customer service

Whenever I read that a product has great customer service I wonder why a great product needs such service. Well, installing a water monitoring system for the first time is not 100% intuitive for most of us. But I found the folks answering my calls (three calls in all) to be immediately available (which is itself unusual) and then completely knowledgeable, able to look into my specific data, and able to resolve my questions on the spot.

Excellent Product and App

I installed a this app by Moen almost a year ago and can say without hesitation that it is a good product. Flo affords the homeowner complete visibility and control over the water monitor and shut-off valve system, wherever they happen to be. Yes, the system has its glitches but if the homeowner is willing to take the time to understand how to use the features, settings, and overrides, it can provide tremendous peace of mind. Use Sleep mode when you have guests staying in the home (when water usage may be much higher than normal), use Away mode when there is nobody in the home, and use Home mode under normal conditions (where “normal conditions” equate to the water usage patterns during Learning Mode), and you should rarely have “false alerts”. We had some false alerts when we were away from the home for a couple of weeks, but Moen’s customer service was extremely helpful in assuring us that we had no leaks, in identifying the issue, and in helping us resolve it with some override settings in the Advanced Features. The Daily Micro Leak Test is an outstanding feature, as it monitors the integrity of the entire indoor plumbing each and every day (while you sleep). Away Mode provides tremendous peace of mind when away from the home, as it will shut down the water supply if it detects any water usage at all.

Flo is well designed and intuitive to use, and Customer Service can step in to help if assistance is needed.

Flo by Moen water valve

This device and app are fantastic. I can see water usage real time, I can turn the water off to the entire house from anywhere on my phone such as when I’m away in the winter to protect against pipes freezing. The system automatically tests nightly and detects leaks such as a running toilet or dripping faucet. It actually detected a leaking tub faucet for me! The water sensors that I have around toilets, sinks etc. Work integrate w this system. The greatest feature is that if a leak is detected either thru the water valve pressure tests or from the water sensors, and you do not respond to the alert it sends out, it will shut the water OFF to protect your home!!! This has actually worked a couple times-amazing. One of the best investments I’ve made in my house to be sure. Great app, great devices.

Amazing

I have used this app by Moen for 2 years and it has saved me from disaster several times. I can’t imagine the cost of repairing the damage had the system not shut off the water. The allocation of water usage to specific sources like hose, faucet, shower, etc is not very accurate or useful but the total water consumption, water pressure and flow rate are. The system is very easy to use. I can easily shut off water to the house from anywhere without having to go into the basement. We no longer have to worry about a pipe bursting while on vacation. The water sensors that I have through out the house work flawlessly. The sensors do have a bad habit of dropping offline frequently and seem to require reconnecting to the network which is a pain. This seems to be getting better and I wonder if Moen is updating the firmware periodically. The service and support are super.

Commendable

Fresh water is a valuable resource in California. This system is an invaluable tool to manage its usage. I have used Flo (with pro extensions) for a few weeks now. It it way better than expected. I have identified a number of issues around the house - dripping valves, irrigation overwatering etc. Also easy to determine flow rate for each fixture in the home including individual irrigation zones which I have found very useful.
Very convenient way to shut off water for repair or emergency.
System has warned me a few times when usage is longer than normal and about to turn water off. Leak detection is genius particularly with our aging radiant floor heating (susceptible to undetectable small leaks). Usage analysis by fixture, although a tricky goal, could imo be better but feel confident the smart software engineers at this app will be improving this feature over time.
Bottom line - don’t regret the purchase of this valve. If you care about how much water you use this really does help.

Peace of mind

I live been wanting to purchase the Moen for quite awhile but the plumbers where our second home is located are so busy they don’t respond to phone calls. I was able to finally find a guy that sold me the Moen product and his brother and law installed the system. I’ve had it now for about 4 months, this thing detects very small leaks like someone not shutting off the outside valve completely. I didn’t realize when we purchased this second home that my water pressure was so high and when we installed this valve it immediately told me my water pressure, the plunger out on a water reducing valve and now I don’t have to freak out that the pressure is high. We live 1000 miles away from this house and I can say without a doubt this has relieved my anxiety about coming there only to see water gushing everywhere with mold. Great product and it has told me when the people who maintain my hot tub are refilling it and will earn to shut it off. If you want peace of mind buy this product it’s an excellent unit.

Indispensable!

this app is simply indispensable! Whether you have a “smart home” or not, you should have this app as a sentinel. Water damage is horrible, whether a sudden discharge or an insidious leak. this app monitors for both. Daily health checks monitor for leaks (this app alerted me to a leak that left unnoticed would have caused hundreds of dollars damage). If a sudden, unexpected water flow occurs, you will get a notice, and the water to your home will be shut off temporarily.

this app is easy to install if you are handy, and inexpensive to install if you use a plumber. Tech support is tremendous, and the peace of mind this app gives you is invaluable.

Just get one, and start sleeping better!
