Nags for upgrade although it’s a paid app

2024-11-17

Apparently I merely paid $20 to download this thing; it won’t be useful without a paid upgrade. Interface doesn’t pop a definition up on lookup. Annoying ads at the bottom of the screen—-in a dictionary app! Makes the paperback look really good, the ads are hugely distracting when studying. Doesn’t work offline; the $20 was for... nothing. Not recommended; seems like a scam.

Audio

2024-11-17

Hi ,
I bought this dictionary and I’m really content with the definition and phonetics in particular; however,
The audio of word pronunciation which is the main reason I punched this dictionary doesn’t work. I sent a massage and there is no help yet. Wish somebody would answer

Good dictionary with one horrible flaw

2024-11-17

The dictionary is excellent with full content, plenty of examples, and pronunciation help. However, it has the terrible flaw of taking you unexpectedly from the page with the word you are looking up back to the home page. It just does this without you touching anything while you are reading through the definitions. This is extremely annoying and makes the dictionary almost unusable in situations where one word has a long page of definitions and examples. You can’t possibly find the meaning you were seeking in the few seconds it stays on the page with that word before reverting to the home page. Sometimes I’m beside myself with rage at this behavior. It seems intentional as it also happens in the Oxford German English dictionary.

Great dictionary, but breaks when offline

2024-11-17

Both the French>English and English>French dictionaries seem comprehensive, reliable, and easy to use.

I have been frustrated, however, by a technical glitch: despite having paid for the premium app that allows offline access, Ox does not load if my phone is offline (eg in airplane mode). Instead, the loading screen hangs for several seconds and Ox crashes.

When I do have WiFi or cellular data, though, Ox is great!

Good content but interface needs work

2024-11-17

This dictionary’s content is more comprehensive than the Robert Collins, but the interface is clunky.

For example: instead of having the search bar always available, you must click on the search icon to bring it up and delete the old search term. This extra step is annoying if you are translating a longer passage.

The verb conjugation tables are adequate, but not as handy as using a dictionary with a nearly unlimited conjugation engine.

In addition, Ox pricing information is confusing. I’m not a fan of automatically renewing subscriptions and would prefer to pay a set price for an app even if this means paying to upgrade at some future date. It’s unclear if this is an available option or not.

Useful for studying

There’s a lot of helpful variables in Ox. Every student of the French language needs it.

I absolutely love it!

2024-11-17

I've been learning French for about a year now, and recently decided I needed to start practicing the four main abilities (e.g., writing, speaking, etc) more systematically in order to approve. Because I have and absolutely love the Italian version (Paravia) of this dictionary, I specifically looked to see if Oxford had a French version, and then immediately bought it. There are several reasons why I love this dictionary. Specifically, it has a large database of words, provides accurate and detailed translations, includes related french words in the definitions, and provides context words to help you distinguish the situations to use the words. The paid version also can be used online, which I appreciate. In addition, and particularly useful, a large portion of words also include idioms/sayings, which I've found are particularly difficult to understand when learning a new language. The Oxford dictionaries are helping me learn and refine two languages, and are one of my most used and go-to resources. Therefore, I highly recommend Ox!

Best dictionary ever

2024-11-17

Well, this is my fifth review and I still love this dictionary best. I’ve just discovered use of wild letters so I can find words that share the same root, which helps me increase my vocabulary. I use this dictionary --French-English— almost every day. It has wonderful examples, which I read for fun at times, superb customer support (yay, Nedialko!), and many other features I am simply not taking time to note now. If you need a translation dictionary, buy this one!

Excellent resource

2024-11-17

I love having the Hachette French English Dictionary as an app on my phone because I’m always ready to research a word. The daily word keeps my mind thinking of French first thing in the morning so I feel somehow immersed. I highly recommend that any student, of either French or English carry this with them.

Excellent Dictionary

2024-11-17

An excellent dictionary with examples, audio pronunciations, a word of the day and so much more. If you’re a serious student of French, it’s well worth the fee, which is the same you’d pay for a kindle book.

Tres bonne!

2024-11-17

Very good French-English dictionary. I do wish it would keep the settings from previous uses. I’m generally looking for English translations from French words (French to English); a min of nuisance to switch from the default English to French.

Great App

2024-11-17

I love how this dictionary gives different example sentences of how to correctly use the word as well as idiom phrases. It is a true wealth of knowledge. In app purchase includes pronunciation for each word which seems reasonable to me. Fabulous app. Thank you!!

Works great

2024-11-17

I used to be quite fluent in French. Over the years of non day to day usage, one forgets a fair amount of vocabulary. It is great to get the word for the day and its definition in English and contextual usage.

Excellent Product at Good Price

2024-11-17

This dictionary is worth every penny. It’s easy to navigate, and the cross reference to other words is awesome. It has the voiced pronunciation and the indispensable IPA.

Not much more to say.
