Tutor on Wyzant Reviews

I’ve been tutoring on WyZant for years. Over time they have increased the % they take from lessons (which is fine because they do a lot of marketing) but it is painfully obvious that they do not invest any money into the tools that they provide in order to actually teach via their service.

TutoronWyzant has all kinds of bugs - in the newest version, push notifications don’t even work! Which is a problem because you get a rating on how quickly you respond to students.

And for the online lessons, they have one of the buggiest and most out-dated whiteboard apps that I’ve ever seen. Today in a lesson I had to log out and log back in with my student 7 times in two hours! I had to refund them a quarter hour of time because of all the bugs! I have mentioned this so many times over the years, but nothing is ever updated.

WyZant - guys - please just update your software platforms, it would bring even more people to use your services!

Complete waste of time. Spent hours on their profile (which kept getting rejected for lack of info despite having pages of info about my qualifications and background). Subject tastes take forever to complete and you find that they don’t carry over well (for instance I had to take an ACT reading assessment, an SAT reading, and another for general reading instruction, then students register for a different subject (k-12 reading) which requires ANOTHER test. Spend my whole life taking assessment tests just to speak with a student, who turns out can’t afford the insane suggested rates by Wyzant (and they take 25% which is a very large cut).

Most “students” don’t reply back or reply with an obvious scam message, followed later by a notice that the person is a fraudulent account.

Not worth the time at all.

Went through the process of becoming a tutor and took and passed their required tests. I did a background check for them and sent them my school transcripts and after their evaluation I was eligible to tutor. Never had a session with a student, answered a student’s homework help question, and they closed my account with no notification. After several emails back and forth (with no explanation) they finally told me that I violated section 18 b of the tutor agreement which, if you read it, is extremely vague. It basically just gave them the freedom to close my account for no good reason, as I mentioned before I hadn’t even gotten to tutor a student; I just answered someone’s homework question like on chegg. So, I’ve taken to leaving a bad review since they’ve decided not to communicate what I’ve done wrong so as to close my account without telling me. If you’re a student looking to tutor, don’t go through them or you might run into the same situation as me! Save yourself the time and find another tutoring program.

One of the worst apps I’ve ever used! I always get emails about when I have a new student or message because TutoronWyzant logs me off as soon as I close it! My game apps are better at giving me notifications than this one! Then I am penalized for not responding fast enough because I only check my email a few times a day. I can’t rely on this to do its job and notify me immediately. Now all of the sudden it won’t let me log in. I keep getting told my password is invalid even though it’s the exact same one I use to log in on my computer and phones web browser! I’ve even double checked and all the information is the same yet I still get an error message! Seriously fix your app this is extremely frustrating!!!!

While I love Wyzant as a tutor TutoronWyzant is terrible. It had several bugs, glitches, and limitations (like not being able to update your profile or read your reviews).

The glitches are a problem because you'll get a notification saying you have a request from a student but it won't update so you can respond. Or you never get a notification about a new student request until hours after the student actually sent the request. They will also allow students to request to work with you at 1am and hold you responsible for not responding quickly.

Additionally, TutoronWyzant closes quickly; you can't save upcoming lessons as drafts; and you cannot delete scheduled lessons that were canceled. It's all very annoying. Lastly, the percentage they take from tutors is ridiculous (especially considering they charge students extra fees outside of your rate) and I'm sure it will only increase with time.

Overall, Wyzant is making too much money to have an app this subpar. This is a great tool if you're a new tutor looking for clients who will actually pay you. Still, I dread using TutoronWyzant.

Many aspects of the WyzAnt app frustrate tutors, although the WyzAnt company itself is fabulous, serving at the forefront of connecting tutors with students online.

Unfortunately, there are many problems. When the address of a tutoring location has been entered for one student, it cannot be copied to a second student. It can only be assigned to one student or assigned to all students, leading to a massive list of shared addresses to cull through when scheduling any session. Even worse, this long list of addresses is completely random, rather than alphabetical or, even better, listed by the frequency with which that student has met at a particular location. Instead, it's total chaos! When corresponding with a student or parent, there is no RETURN key to separate paragraphs, only a SEND button, so the message is all jumbled up instead of organized by neat paragraphs. And I could go on.

Clearly, WyzAnt has not sought advice from top tutors like myself who tutor at 30-40 different locations and have up to 50 students at a time, hence exposing the weaknesses of TutoronWyzant.

I have been tutoring on wyzant for about 4 years now and it has been the best work experience I have ever had. You get to set your own hours, their cut is a fraction of other tutoring sites out there, and there are so many interesting students and subjects you will encounter. Unfortunately TutoronWyzant has been completely broken for me for about 6 months now. Nothing whatsoever shows up when I open TutoronWyzant and it just gives me an error message. It’s up to date so I’m not sure what the issue is but I would love it if y’all could fix it!!

The Wyzant site itself has been pretty great in helping me to connect with new students. The whiteboard for online lessons could use some improvements, but that’s a different story.

Though convenient for scheduling and messaging, TutoronWyzant is severely limited in comparison to the website. It lacks things such as viewing/editing tutor profile, requesting a rate change, and viewing payment history. There are some other features missing from TutoronWyzant that are available through the actual site, but I understand an app can’t be expected to do *everything* a website can do, and the three listed are most important to me personally.

That being said, TutoronWyzant certainly has the potential to be great, but it’s not quite there yet.

I like that I can easily schedule, edit, and submit lessons on TutoronWyzant . But it’s weird that there will be a red “1” showing you have something undone (an unsubmitted lesson), then when you click on it it doesn’t take you directly where you need to be. I also don’t see a page to view my full profile with my badge levels and other info. This would be nice to see. Another thing is that I like the ability to change my rate for different students, and on a computer it gives me the option to do that when responding to a new student, but TutoronWyzant does not. I would like to see TutoronWyzant include more of these features to make it parallel to the Web site. I am more often on my phone than my laptop.

Wyzant is a great company and I love tutoring with them, but TutoronWyzant as well as the website still have plenty of bugs. Sometimes I have to continually relog into TutoronWyzant even though I just had it opened. I will also get a notification for a message, (so TutoronWyzant must have received it) but the message won’t display until I have open and closed TutoronWyzant many times. Accepting requests from students also does not make the request go away until you either accept it multiple times or close and open TutoronWyzant again.

Used to be 4 stars until they made it so you have to scroll through the times minute by minute to enter lesson times. No information about payments or money. Then when I go to the website to look at money stuff it stops me and asks wouldn’t you rather use TutoronWyzant ?

Also, to all the tutors complaining about 25% commission- go check out local tutoring agencies. They’ll give you 50% tops. Learning centers will pay you $10-12 an hour.

It is not free to run a website that pops up on the first page of Google results. So if you can get $60 an hour word of mouth that’s great, but that’s a slow way to grow your business. Good luck!

I’ve been able to leave the part-time job I am at to work as a private tutor part-time. The best part is that I am being paid double as a tutor through Wyzant. The only reason I am not giving it five starts is that it seems to have some issues updating (sometimes) and that it takes $5 from every $20 that I make.

Overall, would definitely recommend for someone with an educational background looking to make a small side income.

There are several things I don’t understand about TutoronWyzant : 1. Why does it not refresh automatically, and if I am out of it for even five minutes I have to log back in. And don’t tell me it’s for security, because my phone has the security. 2. Because it doesn’t refresh, I don’t know if I have new messages. 3. Do you think you could put “urgent book requests” Through text messaging in addition to email? I think most of us can respond quicker that way. And the same goes for new students. The Wyzant app is easy to use, keeps track of your scheduling, reminds both tutor and student of upcoming lessons and past lessons that still need to be submitted for payment. My one complaint about Wyzant in general is their policy of skimming off a whopping 25% of your hourly fee. This causes you to have to charge more than you’d like and reduces the potential for more students. When a parent told me that Wyzant also tacks on a service charge for each payment, that seemed over the top for me, and has caused me to look for other ways to advertise than through Wyzant.

I’ve been using TutoronWyzant for a while and it really helps me to get students and get my name out there as a tutor. I would like the exams on TutoronWyzant to be more specific and more of a wider range. For example, it only tests ‘calculus’ skills but could test for Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, differential equations, real analysis, complex analysis. All these subjects fall under the umbrella of calculus but to say you can tutor calculus because you took a Calc exam and got qualified is a pretty big ambiguity if you’re looking for a higher or lower level of the specific overarching subject as the student seeking a tutor. But even still, this is a great app to get your name out there and make some money on the side.

Although TutoronWyzant has great potential, there are many aspects that make it time consuming. The student list doesn't coordinate with a tutors current list, making time consuming to search through the list. Also, if you are entering a lesson during the lesson, it frequently times out and you have to re-enter your notes. This issues still haven’t been addressed Finally when using the write board previously when you erased something it was erased from both ends, currently both myself and the student have to erase each board for it to clear, thus time consuming and confusing for the younger students.

Wyzant provides an invaluable service to my tutoring business, and truth be told, without Wyzant I wouldn’t have near the success that I do. For tutors specifically, even with the cut that they take (which has improved vastly this year over last year’s tiered system) the Wyzant service provides a great tool for finding clients.

TutoronWyzant itself is good. Improvements to the usability can certainly be made. For example, and easier way to switch between online and in person jobs would be great. But for what TutoronWyzant intends to provide, I don’t really have any major complaints.

Overall, I’m very happy with the Wyzant app and service. The particularly great lesson I just had compelled me to write this review, so perhaps take my glowing recommendation with a grain of salt, but if you tutor, do yourself a favor and get on Wyzant. You won’t regret it.

TutoronWyzant is helpful and overall I thank you guys for it. A few things I notice though that would make it perfect for me:

1) Often when I leave TutoronWyzant to check on my other apps and return to Wyzant, the message I was composing to a student disappears. This happens even if I leave for less than 30 seconds sometimes. More message permanence would be great.

2) When you submit a lesson, it would be great if there was a “repeat next week” function like there is on the desktop website.

3) Being able to view your profile would be great.

None of these comments detract from the fact that I enjoy TutoronWyzant and find it helpful, but these are just suggestions if you guys continue to develop TutoronWyzant .

As a tutor going into a Chemistry PhD Wyzant is absolutely critical to helping me stay sharp, improve my teaching skills and make extra money all at once. TutoronWyzant is great to use and easy to get jobs with. A couple things I would like to see in future updates is a full profile view on TutoronWyzant and some profile statistics. (clicks, profile views etc.) Great platform and great app, any PhD student should be on this platform.

Can’t log in to tutor my clients, error when I try to change password, Wyzant completely unresponsive, and no number to call to get help. I have lost a client over this and about to lose another. I can’t get paid for services I completed. Think it’s time for a new app - so frustrating!
