What is Airmate? Airmate is a free flight planning and weather app designed for pilots. I’m a Student Pilot with low hours and have played with this app on a couple of flights. Recently, I flew a solo 135 mile cross country with it and the Dual 160 GPS for the Bluetooth. I tried to use it only as a backup, but it was hard to do. Pilotage and Dead Reckoning seems to want to take the backseat, when you are able to see exactly where you are and if on or off course. Still learning how to use it the easiest and best way, but I like it and for sure, the free price is very attractive.

Great, simple VFR chart app. I’m amazed at how well this works - even how they integrated street and VFR maps at different zoom levels. My only gripe is the charts don’t seem to update in the background. Not a big deal since they’re only updated every few months. I would have been happy to pay a few bucks for this.
Update: I had to deck a couple of stars. Many of the plates are inaccurate or out of date. I actually got screwed up at an airport yesterday when the ATC controller gave me a runway I wasn’t expecting (27 vs 23).

The airports are unsearchable under the Edit tab for the “From” and “To” entry boxes. The navlog displays incorrect headings (connect a VOR and a nearby waypoint and you will notice they are off by several degrees). Would prefer the option to choose miles instead of kilometers for the decoded METAR. Does suffer from occasional crashes. Overall a good start and has potential but has fundamental flaws and at this point I can’t recommend it as a reliable navigation tool.

Update: I did some trouble shooting and found something that looked like a corrupted file. After a re-install it appears to be working fine. I will fly with Airmate on Tuesday, and write an update when I am down.
I have a brand new iPad mini. I downloaded Airmate , fine.
I installed the charts, fine.
I created my aircraft, fine.
I created my flight plan, again fine.
As far as I can tell, everything works fine.
Except I can’t get back to the map view, and as soon as I click on my flight plan Airmate crashes.
Sorry to do this in such a public manner but I had no choice. Everything I touch causes Airmate to crash.

Airmate beats the pants off other (expensive) flight planning apps....and it is free! Stop searching for a better app unless you just like wasting your money. I can’t praise Airmate enough. Great job!

Unable to see vfr georeferenced plates option neither can I see the airport diagram when I zoom into an airport. This is for all plates in United States. Only ifr plates are visible in options and only they can be georeferenced onto the map

Very good aviation app. It’s better to sync data for all airports for instance OIAI Tower freq is not correct in the map although it is true on it’s pdf. Please add radial DME for using VOR. Thank you so much.

Great for a free app. Highly recommended for aviation students.
However there is only one issue.
On ios 13 dark mode, the background is black and unable to read the texts. Please fix soon.

Evaluating the app as a flying instructor comparing with Sky Demon . Not as intuitive and as easy to use however to be fair it is free. In attempting to file a flight plan I persistently saw the following arcane error message :- “efpn16b r present but pbn absent”. and spent many happy hours trying to work out what it meant. Eventually I worked out that it was to do with the aircraft configuration. There is no information about flight radar services eg farnborough radar and some of the square conspicuously codes are incorrect. e.g. Stansted TMZ has not been 7013 for several years now as of May 2022. Overall very good value for the price (free) but I don’t feel I can totally trust it. To be fair though I am using Garmin G1000 for primary navigation with backup paper chart
