Bad business practices and support

While FlyQEFB is decent I found I no longer needed it. In the my account section there is no way to indicate I no longer want to renew the subscription. I thought removing anything in the payment method would stop my subscription. It did not. I emailed the company when they notified me that my subscription was renewed for another year and told them I DID NOT want to renew and would like a refund. I have received no reply or refund. The following day I received an marketing email from the CEO that asked me to submit a review and if I was submitting a bad review to reply back to the CEO first to let him know so he ca attempt to fix the issue first. I did email the CEO in reply and received an UNDELIVERABLE EMAIL NOT FOUND reply. I emailed customer service again and forwarded my email to the CEO in hopes they will reply and refund my money. Again, no reply - other than an automated response saying thanks for my email - and no refund. I want my money back and the last thing I wanted to do was to submit a bad review. But since they do not reply to my emails I don’t know what else to do to get their attention. I guess the next step is to dispute the charge on my card. If they want to fix anything with their app it should be the MY ACCOUNT section of their website with an auto renew switch. Otherwise I classify Seattle Avionics as a deceptive subscription that won’t let you turn it off.

Guns and Butter

I’ve been using FLYQ EFB since v2.0 and contributing beta participant through v4. As a former pro flying jets around the world, I chose FLYQ when I bought my Mooney Ovation applying the cash vs value of all the available EFBs. It was not ready for prime time world wide travel. It has now arrived giving both Guns and Butter for the GA market. Seattle Avionics has always delivered quality and functionality above cost.

I would hope they reopen their Lifetime options for new subscribers. Using our public charting and stitching it all together has been nearly bug free and much appreciated. Not like some of the other platforms that charge a premium for what has already been paid for as a tax payer. Information here, now, outside the US will drive a rise in cost but I hope it will still beat the subscription cost compared to the rest of the pack.

Excellent job on this new version.

New VFR user

I sampled 3 EFBs before deciding on FlyQ. I found it to be the easiest to learn and use. I actually used the 30 day free trial and my wife's old iPad to fly a Piper Cherokee 140 from First Flight airport (FFA) in North Carolina to Guthrie Edmond Regional (GOK) in Oklahoma. As soon as I got home, I bought my own iPad mini and paid my annual subscription for FlyQ. I also canceled my VFR Chart subscription with Sportys. That alone will more than balance the cost of the FlyQ annual subscription. I have always had current paper charts but now I can pay less once a year and have ALL the charts.

I'm not really looking forward to buying ADS-B out. But I am looking forward to having ADS-B in because of the in-flight weather and traffic. I expect a high percentage of general aviation to forgo ADS-B out, but at least I'll be able to see all commercial and regional traffic right on the iPad! I feel safer already.

Thanks to all those at Seattle Avionics for making FlyQ EFB such a great app. It has it all and I love it.

One year later...
I built the dual band Stratux ADS-B-In receiver using the Raspberry kit. All for under $100. It works perfectly with FlyQ!!! Now I see traffic and weather on the latest sectional charts and my actual flight path. Very slick! Seattle Avionics keeps getting better.

I expect to get the least expensive ADS-B-Out when it is required. Maybe the new uAvionix wingtip unit or a Garmin GDL 82.

Great EFB

I’ve been using FlyQ for several years now and I really like it because of the essential features and ease of use. I compared FlyQ to another EFB app but found the other app had more features that were of no interest to me and it seemed a bit more complicated than it needed to be. Also, FlyQ includes geo-referenced charts that the other app didn’t in its basic product (you would have to pay for the higher priced version if you wanted this feature). Like one other review that I’ve read, I’m not crazy about the Version 4 release. I’m a firm believer in the KISS principle. For me personally, a few tweaks to the pre-Version 4 release will really make this an outstanding product. Lastly, customer support at Seattle Avionics is very good.

Great but watch out

I have been an enthusiastic user for several years, after being turned off by the overly complex competitive products. Now FlyQ version 4 has started down the path to “bloatware”. Features that are of no use in the cockpit are being added. This will likely create the chance for getting into the wrong parts of the program at the worst times. It will increase the iPad resources needed to run the program. Descending into the bloatware morass has been the fate of many successful applications like Microsoft Word. I will continue using Version 3, but I doubt that I will be able to do so for long. I hope a light version like Version 3 will be made available without the superfluous features.

Absolutely the BEST Performance/Value in Aviation Apps

I’m a Gold Seal CFI/MEI/AGI/A&P/IA with ATP multi and Commercial single engine. I’ve used EVERY aviation app for iPad, and was a beta tester for some of the first aviation apps available. In my opinion FlyQ is competitive with or better than every other product, and is available for a much smaller investment than anything comparable.
The feature set is huge, and often has features that others either take years to catch up to, or never get there. Try FlyQEFB, check out the tutorials, and I think you’ll be glad you did. I think there are also special deals still available for student pilots that make this a no-brainer for pilots in training.

I kept FlyQ and dropped Foreflight

I have had subscriptions to all the major aviation apps for over three years, and this year I started weeding. I dropped my subscriptions to Foreflight and WingX but kept FlyQ, FltPlan Go (which is free) and Garmin Pilot, all of which I prefer to those I dropped.

FlyQ is the most simple an intuitive of the major EFB apps, in my view. I think any pilot could be planning an long VFR or IFR within a few minutes of first loading it. It is also easier to stay proficient with it than most others because of its simplicity.

I do prefer Garmin Pilot slightly, but for many people, I suspect FlyQ is more useful and simply easier to use.

Very cockpit friendly

Very concise user interface which is not crowded with options as with other EFB-type software, even on a small screen footprint. This is a big plus when trying to fly the plane and navigate the EFB-user interface. Looking foreword to a weight and balance feature with pdf/png/jpg Dropbox/google-drive/mail upload feature. An inflight glide-ring might be a plus feature in a future release.
One of my favorite features is the indicated wind-speed vane relative to the airport runways. A relative crosswind reference for each runway might be nice, however, the lack of that feature doesn’t diminish the effectiveness of it’s current function. I currently subscribe to both foreflight and Fly/Q. Fly/Q is by far easier to learn.

One Click Easy

I started using FlyQ when I was earning my Instrument Rating. The combination of geo-referenced approach planes, approach plate overlay and position data from my Bad Elf GPS receiver made it easy to learn how the IFR chart products interact to support a pilots ADM and approach processes. I am a member of a flying club and have many chances to fly with other pilots to see how they use technology in the cockpit. My use of FlyQ is fast, accurate and effortless compared to the users of similar products. It doesn’t matter if the weather is CAVU or hard IMC, the one-click interface gets me the information I need quickly so I can scan the sky or my instruments, instead of my iPad.

Excellent app especially for the rental pilot

I fly both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft and rent them. FlyQEFB doesn’t cause me to have to learn a new system each time I fly. I just carry it with me and add the aircraft I am flying. I do not spend a lot of time learning aspen, garmin, or the other gold plated on board systems, and I feel safer doing it that way.
This small inexpensive app is just excellent, in every way. I put it on a knee board, thus spending a lot of time looking outside, and some time scanning instruments, only referencing the iPad occasionally or when I reach destination,or have trouble ....I just touch nearest airport and head there for fuel or emergency.

Excellent Intuitive App

I have been using this for about 4 years now. I started with this and Foreflight at the same time w/ 30 days trial and loved this one hands down. It is very intuitive to use for non-professional pilots, while foreflight is good as well but more geared towards commercial pilots. Over the years, FlyQ has come a long way and like one pricing subscription over “Chinese menu” for foreflight. I love the choice of multiple ADSB receivers over limited with other app. Hands down, great app that continues to add options.

Difficult to use

I like Fly Q and I have tried it a couple times over the past few years but struggle with it.
I watched a lot of tutorials, which helped a lot because the interface is not intuitive.
It was difficult to make a flight plan while in the air if I had to change something. The traffic feature has the size of the other planes too large which is misleading for how close they are as well as they block the ability to click on the map to gain information about particular airspace and airports nearby. Sadly it also deleted a few logged flights for some reason. I couldn’t find where to have a CFI sign off my Flight Review in my log book.
I would still give FlyQ another try in the future.

Still awesome - second review

So this "rusty old pilot" has been flying continually for over 2 years now with FlyQ. I am finishing up my commercial rating, and will soon be working on my CFI. I consider FlyQ as a “must have” for all my flights to provide situational awareness and easy access to any function. The price beats any app out there and the stability is excellent. I believe in flying the airplane rather than being fixated on my EFB, and FlyQ lets me get the information I need quickly and get back to paying attention to flying. There may not be as many “features” as some other apps, but the team is always making improvements, and adding things that pilots request.

Good app but it could use one minor improvement

I’ve been using FQ for 5 years and found it to be reliable and simple to use.

One improvement I’d like to see: don’t require the iPad to be awake and FlyQEFB loaded when downloading charts. If I could start the process and let things run in the background, it would be a lot handier.

Second, I’m concerned that the trend to more features and social media is cluttering up the clean, simple user interface that made FlyQEFB useful. There’s only so much real estate on an iPad and my fingers aren’t getting any smaller. Throw in a little turbulence, and it’s way too easy to wind up in a function that I didn’t want.

User-Friendly and Affordable

FlyQ provides the best bang-for-the-buck in my opinion. While I have used FlyQEFB for both IFR and VFR flying, the bulk of my use is VFR. FlyQEFB is intuitive and it is easy to pull up weather, file flight plans, and view NOTAMS, traffic (with ADS-B, obviously), and graphical depictions of TFRs. The pricing for current flight instructors is also outstanding and greatly appreciated. I have not experienced any issues with the software and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a highly-functional EFB at a reasonable price.

Excellent EFB!

I have been using FlyQ for about 3 years now. It is a really powerful EFB, especially with ADS-B In. If you need that, Seattle Avionics (makers of FlyQ) sell a Merlin, which allows you to get traffic and weather in real time while you fly. I have also used ForeFlight quite a bit. FlyQ is just as powerful as ForeFlight, but it is far less expensive. I strongly recommend FlyQ over ForeFlight.

And to all you students and CFIs out there, FlyQ is extremely friendly to flight students and teachers. Reach out to Seattle Avionics for an excellent deal!

Constant improvement, stability, user friendly

I’ve been a subscriber for a few years now. As a recreational pilot, picking an app that fits to it needs can be daunting. The features are plentiful, and switching isn’t always easy. I started with FlyQEFB because of its user friendliness, and the data I need being handy and accessible quickly. Over the years, the product has been enhanced constantly with useful features, most recently a large weather package. I’ve renewed my subscription again for a few reasons:
1. Stable platform - very few, if any, crashes when in use, even with a 3 year old iPad.
2. Continuous improvement of the product.
3. Familiarity has remained with new releases, avoiding a complete re-learn on my end.
4. Compatibility with home-built stratux ADS-B in (less of a differentiator in 2020+)
5. Customer service is excellent.

Bad customer support. Be aware this app is good for USA and surrounding countries only.

I live in USA but I wanted FlyQEFB to use it in South America for the coming fire season. I got the surprise that FlyQEFB does not have data on that region. I contacted customer support for a cancellation and refund the same day. They only communicate through email and the only response they sent me was that they do not control refunds and miss guided me to do it through the apple store. I found that Apple does not manage this subscription. I wrote a second email to customer support explaining and looking for solutions, they never responded back. I feel like a victim of a scam. I would NEVER recommend FlyQEFB to anyone. I am stuck with a useless $130+ /year subscription service and I can do nothing about it. THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

Some slick features, but... Not ready for IFR.

Kind of like the AOPA weather app by Seattle Avionics and the original Pilot app by Digital Cyclone before Garmin bought the company 4 or 5 years ago. Some things are very clever and innovative, but some essential features, IFR flight planning comes to mind, are cumbersome and frustrating, at best, and unusable at worst.
I used Garmin Pilot before Garmin acquired the product and began improving it over several years. At first not bad, but far behind ForeFlight which remains my favorite app by far: great features, easy to use, and very slick and visually attractive.
Bottom line: FlyQ is probably OK for VFR flying, but it’s not even close to ForeFlight overall or for IFR flights.

Best out there!

I ran ForeFlight, tried others. Found FlyQ, ran it for 12 months alongside FF. I truly think anyone who stays with FF is insane... FlyQ with it’s not more than 2 clicks’ is by FAR the best. The new weather heavy release is fantastic. The responsive of their staff to both trivial and serious e-mails is both prompt and efficient. Looking forward to even more new features soon! Try it, after a little learning curve, I’m sure you’ll sign up and allow your FF the lapse as I did. ( oh, and it’s cheaper too...).

Reliable easy to use and capable.

App Store for FlyQ
For the past year I have used FlyQ in our Cessna 182 with the G1000 Nav III package along with the Merlin ADS-B receiver and have found it extremely easy to use and very reliable.
Having flown for more than 50 years as an instrument rated pilot it is stunning how much information is presented in such a usable fashion to help get the needed big picture and then drill down to the details needed for accurate planning in challenging conditions. It is also gives me a great sense of security knowing that despite having an excellent Nav system and back up instruments that the FlyQ/Merlin system gives me a completely independent system for back up using my tablet to navigate if the G1000 goes dark would be my first choice, the back up instruments would be a fall back because the AHRS in the Merlin package is so stable. I am using another EFB system as well but prefer the FlyQ for inflight use and preflight planning.

Good app

I’m a student pilot so I can’t evaluate it as succinctly as others might. I like what I’ve used so far. The interface is intuitive and works well for my VFR flying. Looking forward to tethering it to my ADSB system once I obtain that in a few months. Haven’t used ForeFlight so I can’t comment on the differences. I like this and my CFI likes FlyQEFB as well.

Intuitive, great features, easy to use

I have been using fly q since i was a student 4 years ago. Every update it has got better and better. Great value, great application.
Currently IFR training, love the procedure overlay, and now with flight tracking, i can review my holds and approaches on the ground.
The winds aloft feature is still awesome, takes me 5 seconds to pock my cruising altitude on leaving the pattern as i am talking to Departure for flight following, and a great tool en route in the quest for better, faster air.
Customer service is really responsive too whenever you send them a question.

NavLog is lacking. FLYQ Navlog displays ETE and Distance between waypoints. Other competitors displays cumulative ETE and Distance. This is nice feature, at any particular waypoint you know your arrival time and total distance traveled for fuel calculations. Also there is a glitch in their climb calculations. Verify your climb calculations before you go DO NOT rely on FLYQ climb data.

Read some of the reviews but what is critical to me is how FLYQ performs when I fly IFR. For my personal review, I will not fly hard IFR with FLYQ. This EFB has left high and dry in IMC from screen locking up being unable to remove the METAR window on the app plate while attempting to shoot an app where I could read the data on the plate. Also their flight planning calculations are poor, their NEXRAD data is inaccurate as compares to ADDS. I average about one software glitch per month. Now lets talk about SUPPORT extremely UNSAT takes weeks to get a response and some techs have limited flight experience. Typical response just reload the software, nice how do you reload the software on an app??? Pay the extra money for ForeFlight your LIFE is worth it. Please, if anyone wants to challenge my comments, I have the lots of emails to support my comments. FLY SAFE OUT THERE!

FLYQ leaves you hanging. I used FLYQ for the 4 years and i have never had a not problem flight. The system locks up, bad WX reporting, tap on an airport to get WX after reading the WX when i tap out of the map I get a black empty box where the weather was blocking the map and app plate, NICE. Sometimes the update cycle is incomplete only get some of the updates then I get a failed update message and a red state, nice when your hours from takeoff. The MOST ignoring issue is. TECH SUPPORTS TAKES DAYS TO RESPOND. Todate it has been 4 days since I sent an email needIng help and still no response, NICE when planning a flight the next day. I have a subscription that expires in a year and an debating just to bite the bullet and get ForeFlight. If you are going in IMC strongly recommend getting paper charts as a backup we will need them

Joe   2 years ago

I have been using FLYQ since 2917 and most of the time it is like running a Beta version with all kinds of issue from screen locks, inaccurate WX, NavLogs wrong calculations. I am using an iPad and iPhone. It maybe my setup BUT tech Support is no help they are slow to respond and provide WAG not revelatant solution just to close the ticket. Every time I fly in IMC I feel unsafe waiting for something to happen. It maybe a good product but tech Support does not help. If you question my statement just check my account history and get back to me, love to hear your explanation
