The perfect morning ☕️

The Economist Espresso has become a valuable part of my morning routine. It provides the same quality global reporting and commentary in flowing prose that I have come to expect from the Economist Group. It survey’s recent stories I should know. And it is especially effective at covering global news which others fail to cover.

The most valuable part of the Espresso app is its brevity. EspressofromTheEconomist allows me to read the news in a tight morning schedule without going down the online news rabbit hole. Like many, I strive to get the quote every morning as a reward for reading all six pages.

Keep up the good work!

A Nice Dose of Calm

In the morning, I tend to make my coffee, meditate for 10-15 minutes, then read Espresso before moving on to something else whilst sipping my bean-water. As part of my morning ritual, Espresso gives me a good boost in thinking while making me a laugh out loud every so often. It’s well-informed data and links to Economist articles furthers my understanding of what’s going on in the world today. Plus, as a sucker for a good quote, the last page of the report makes me happy. Overall, a great use of time every day.

All hail economist

Articles are well researched and balanced with links to more in depth articles. A welcome respite from the news blather of the trump era. Kept me sane. And I love the quote of the day.

Complaints. (1)Sometimes with breaking news the North American version publishes late. I read at breakfast. (2) I know your photos are copyrited , but occasionally I’d like to copy them to my photos, this is not straightforward on an iPhone.

Keep up the good work.

Ideological selectivity

I enjoy the daily update on events around the world but I am getting disillusioned by your annoying, and ideologically driven selectivity. For example, in today’s edition you report on an attack on the US Capitol without mentioning his race (black) or his political affiliation (devotion to Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam). Such reticence would not have been on display if the attacker had been a member of the Proud Boys. It is well past time for The Economist to return to critically objective and balanced reporting of facts that has been so obviously lacking since July of 2015.

Not getting better ....

I have used EspressofromTheEconomist for at least 5 years now. It’s my usual cycling companion. Little by little I have watched the engineering decline and judgement grow worse.

Bluetooth buffering has been a consistent flaw that they can’t seem to get right. On certain devices when there is a pause, the resumption is delayed. Poor QA practices.

UI is not really improving and in the audio section is plain bad.

I pay for the subscription. Can I expect not to have to “swipe left” to avoid the upfront ad? The swipe is poorly done so 3 out of times you end up clicking. That’s called a clickbait - is that Economist wishes?

When first introduced, it was annoying. Now that it is always shown even when you are simply returning to continue on the article you were reading or listening to, it’s just plain offensive. You think that extra half a cent worth the damage to you brand’s image?

Poor judgement on EspressofromTheEconomist diminishes a great magazine.

Needs ability to view previous days

Ive been using espresso since it first came out and i love it. The new version is really visually pleasing and they did a great job structuring it. The only reason im not giving it 5 stars is cause the old version let you read previous days posts. Some days we all forget or are busy but i would still like to know what the news is from that day. Maybe im just not seeing where that feature is in the new version…

By

Short and sweet

I like that EspressofromTheEconomist gives a highlight of news for the day that I can read through in less than 5 min. It doesn’t have endless headlines and distractions, and if I’m interested in a topic I can always search for more about it on the main Economist app or NYT or wherever. This is a simple app that works well and doesn’t feel like it’s monetizing my attention

A great second to the economist.

I spend a lot of time reading the economist articles, and find them quite interesting and knowledge dense. Of course, sometimes I do not have the time to read my daily article, and this is where ‘espresso’ saves my time. The articles presented in the espresso version of the economist are, knowledge dense and short. They have made my daily intake of news a lot easier and a lot faster.

Why did the currency and commodity page go away?

Currency screenshot still shows in App Store. Recent changes have not improved EspressofromTheEconomist . It was the fastest way I have found keep track of world events. Would like a less slanted take on the news, but at least they are up front about their slant. Many links to other economist related stories, helps also.

Great content, no notifications

For news readers seeking a global perspective, EspressofromTheEconomist has excellent content. The layout is easy to read, and a widget is available to review top headlines at a glance. If there was a way to receive notifications for when EspressofromTheEconomist was updated with unread stories, I would give it 5/5 stars. A good example of a news app with notifications is the Tech Top 10 by The Information.

Best news app ever!

This is an incredible news app! I've never felt more motivated than now to keep up to date with the news. EspressofromTheEconomist carefully selects a handful of stories each day to read and you can track your progress by checking the boxes next to each story. Easy to use, excellent journalism, up-to-date and objective news briefings. Highly recommended!!!

Annoying, minor and easily solvable technical issue

EspressofromTheEconomist had one minor annoying issue, it won’t sync what is read across devices. I read it on my phone in the morning, but when I open my iPad in the evening the stories show as unread.

This is a Minor issue, but perhaps working across multiple devices and having slight OCD are a combination more common in readers of The Economist than in the general population. Since this happens 6 days a week, it merits being fixed.

Thank you.

Just the shot of news you need

Instead of focusing on opinion based, hastily researched screeching about current events, The Economist’s Espresso presents small doses of well developed analysis regarding news from the entire world. It’s all the broad scope of the weekly periodical, but doesn’t require the time equivalent of a second job to read. This is the antidote to the sound bite addicted, 24 hour news cycle.

When you want a quick look at the news of the day

I read this first thing every morning. It’s a good gauge as to whether I want to read more in a full length newspaper and also useful when I’m short on time but want to briefly know the world news. I like that you can change the focus of the report to different parts of the world.

Great news app! Bit-size format

This review was already written as a standard message from EspressofromTheEconomist itself, but I am editing this initial statement just to confirm that it reflects my exact feelings about EspressofromTheEconomist ; SUPERB!
Could not ask for a better news app that keeps me up to date with the most important financial and political news on a daily basis! Great job guys!

I love Espresso in the mornings

Aggregating the most important news in the world is no small thing to do, but The Economist has managed to do it. My only complain is that sometimes the exact same versions of the short articles make it to the The World this Week section of The Economist magazine, but other than that, great read in the morning.

By

New updates bring regression

Before the “new format” one could see articles from that current week in case you missed a day. The devs took that away! What are they thinking??!! I believe they are trying to Pavlovian train us to open their app every day. I use to love EspressofromTheEconomist, and overall, I like the new format, but taking away the ability to see some past days makes EspressofromTheEconomist expendable to me. I have unsubscribed in protest! Please bring this back, plus the quote of the day.
Won’t resubscribe until you do!

By

Beware - incredibly difficult to cancel subscription

EspressofromTheEconomist itself is a pretty basic source of news, the issue is with their subscription model. There is no way to cancel your subscription within EspressofromTheEconomist or even on their website! I called their customer service number and was told I have to call ITunes directly to cancel. For an app to not have a way to cancel its own subscription is a joke. There are much better sources of news out there that don’t make you jump through hoops to cancel their subscription.

Start your day with a world view!

Less than five minutes and you will be brought up to speed as well as learn about a place you may not know well. With links to long form articles it is as indispensable as coffee each morning.

No longer able to increase the speed of the audio version

As always, this is only a review of EspressofromTheEconomist . If I could rate the economist it would get a 6 out of 5. Unfortunately I noticed that the iPhone app no longer supports the 1.5x and 2x speed listening option. Please bring this back!

Content is fine, IF you ever receive it

I’ve always loved the Economist and have read the print version religiously for over thirty years. But their apps (and their subscriptions department) are truly terrible. EspressofromTheEconomist will refresh only about 70% of the time. Every third day, good luck getting the news. It’s also the only app on my phone that regularly crashes. On my phone it looks fine, on my iPad it doesn’t expand to fill the whole screen (it’s “iPhone-sized” but in an iPad screen). EspressofromTheEconomist won’t rotate from vertical to horizontal, even if Screen Aspect is unlocked. Finally, there are different versions floating around in EspressofromTheEconomist Store, so you have to be careful about which one you are getting. My advice: stick to the print edition. (IF it ever shows up on the front doorstep, it’s a great read!)

Much improved interface, unparalleled news

Seems like most of the kinks have been worked out of EspressofromTheEconomist finally. I used to have an issue of it pulling up the last days news I had accessed before I had to force it forward to the current day. No longer a problem. Great copy and coverage. Love the quotes at the end. Please make an Apple Watch version!

Love it; wish it would pre-load the articles

EspressofromTheEconomist is one of my favourite parts of my morning routine. It's also simple and to the point!

One thing I wish for is for the content to always be fresh and pre-loaded *before* I open EspressofromTheEconomist every day, so that I can access the content even on my underground commute where I don't have access to the internet.

Boiled down to a science

I love this side app, hooked along with the Economist issues, gives me a good quick brief in the mornings before I get down time to open my long form issue. Different versions of a great thing are always welcome. Shout out to the writers and editors, excellent journalism, editing, and writing work. A steady rock in the rough seas of news lately.
