Build your Vocabulary through Beautiful Word of the Day and Interactive Quizzes!
LookUp is an innovative English Dictionary app that combines a comprehensive English Dictionary with powerful vocabulary building tools. The app is perfect for English Learners and Word Enthusiasts who want to build their English Vocabulary.
LookUpDictionary use to work great, everyday it would give me a new word of the day, but once I switched over to an iPhone 13 Pro LookUpDictionary no longer gives me a new word. It’s been stuck on the same home page with the same words for weeks. When I uninstall and reinstall it finally gives me a new word but now it’s stuck on that new word and it’s been a week with no change. I receive no new word and the home page doesn’t update with any new recommended words.
Subscription required for features I already paid for

LookUpDictionary was great for looking up words on the go, adding them to my word collections, and translating them to different languages. I also enjoyed the learn tab that helped me build my vocabulary through interactive quizzes. However, the recent update 9.5 ruined everything by requiring a subscription to access these features. This is unfair because I already paid for LookUpDictionary and I should be able to use all the features without paying more. I want my money back or my features restored.
Might as well charge to download the app

LookUpDictionary is horrible. You get LookUpDictionary , it gives you two words for two days. And then asks you to pay $30 a year to get more. The primary purpose of LookUpDictionary is to give you fun word of the days but then instantly locks it behind a pay wall. What is the point of that! There’s plenty of other features of LookUpDictionary that are locked behind a pay wall… why not keep it at that and let us have the BARE MINIMUM advertised in LookUpDictionary ! Horrible decision in my opinion to advertise an app as free but to then make it absolutely useless unless you join their subscription model. Stay away from this junk of an app.
Missing a basic notification setting
2024-04-08
by Rcniman
You can't set a time for the daily word of the day notification. This is absolutely ridiculous. Look Up sends me the notification in the middle of the night, meaning it gets buried with all the other notifications that I get overnight. Allow me to choose a time and I'll reconsider LookUpDictionary. It might be a fun app to browse words in every once-in-a-while, but currently isn't very useful as a daily vocabulary builder.
I recently upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro and I noticed my battery was draining rather quickly. So I went into the settings and saw that over the last 24 hours a whopping 27% of battery usage was from the LookUp app. Under where it says LookUp app it lists “audio” as the activity that is causing the battery drain. I really do love LookUpDictionary…I even have the widget on my home screen. I’m a bit of a vocabulary nerd so LookUpDictionary really filled that niche. But if this battery drain isn’t resolved, I don’t see how I can keep it on my phone. I will upgrade my rating if the battery issue is fixed.
Plus features locked with no way to restore

For the last few weeks, I haven’t been able to use the Lookup+ features. I am a legacy paid user.
The blue button to “restore purchase” showed up once, and I was able to do a restore. It lasted for one day, and now the blue button only has a spinning wheel, with no way to restore the purchase again.
I tried reinstalling, but that didn’t help. This has been a very bad transition from being a one-time purchase to a subscription model.
Word of the day complication not refreshing
2024-06-13
by Zguy20
This is an amazing app save for the fact that despite LookUpDictionary showing the current word of the day, the watch face complication will refuse to refresh unless I restart the whole watch. The word of the day also doesn’t change at the start of each day; it changes in the middle, at least for me. It would be amazing if there was an option for the word of the day to only change in the morning, so that there is actually a new word at the start of every day (even if it means I’m technically not caught up to what the current word is; like, my word of the day would lag behind the “real” one so that it switches in the morning of my time zone). I would gladly pay a subscription if that’s what it would take for these features to be implemented. Either way, thanks.
Great graphics, ok app

The pictures are great but LookUpDictionary always struggles to load and the words reset at odd times of the day. Honestly, it’s worth half of what they charge which isn’t a lot but it’s a glitchy app.
It does let you save your favorites and you can look at past words (whenever it eventually loads). All in all, it’s a pretty fair app for people who love words, they just need to work out some kinks.
Weak Attempt

by Jeffgc7
Let me start by saying that I have no problem paying for a dictionary app; new words fascinate me and Lookup looked like a ‘fun’ dictionary. And the reality is that this application is actually very pretty- the night mode is stylish and word of the day drawings actually motivate me to open it frequently, which is something a dictionary app has never compeled me to do. But it’s greatly deterred by the fact that so many of the real, English words I’ve looked up are hit with a ‘no results’ find. In fact, it seemed that any word beyond a high school-level vocabulary could not be found.
The reality is that a dictionary app is primarily used to define words we may find in our day-to-day lives and just aren’t familiar with, and there are plenty of free dictionary apps with things such as built-in thesauruses or far more information/uses behind the word that you are searching than LookUpDictionary can offer. The only true thing that Lookup has going for it are it’s looks, and that unfortunately doesn’t justify its price tag.
Would give it 5 Stars, if not for some key missing features

by Kirti Vardhan
So I love LookUpDictionary and always find ways to increase my usage but I feel LookUpDictionary is missing a couple features that I think it should have one of those features is the ability to generate random words what I mean by that is there should be an option like Wikipedia's random article feature where we can jump from one word to another real fast which gives us a reason to open LookUpDictionary randomly and use it more. Also Japanese translations were supposed to be there but so far that is also missing. Fixing these features and adding a few interesting features will make me give LookUpDictionary a perfect rating and recommend it more. Edit - the developer has addressed the bug and I got access to lifetime with no issues, they were very helpful in addressing my concerns in a timely manner.
Please add search functionality!

It would be awesome if when you click on the search tab, it auto selects the search bar, instead of needing to click it as well. All other dictionaries I’ve tried have this feature. Super simple, but extremely helpful. Please 🙏🏼
Is it worth it?

This is a fun little app with good widgets that does what it says on the tin — a new word every day with an accompanying definition. I was fortunate enough to get it when you could buy a lifetime “pro” version for a one time, $10 purchase; I can’t honestly say that I would pay a monthly or annual subscription for it.
Also, while most of the art for the daily words is inoffensive at worst, it occasionally features these creepy, large-eyed characters that look rather like what you would expect of a fake children’s book in a horror film. I always hide the widget when that art style features because I find it unnerving.
Excellent app, have improvement suggestion!

Yesterday, I emailed application support the following, which summarizes my like for LookUpDictionary and my suggestion for improvement (I hope they respond back, or at least consider my suggestion):
Hello.
For a long time now, I’ve been a big fan of your LookUp iOS app, which I most often use as a dictionary. I love the beautiful imagery in your app, as all the beautiful pictures in LookUpDictionary make your app more a pleasure to use as a dictionary, instead of just using a plain dictionary containing only words! 👍
May I make a suggestion that I think would improve the usability of your app, not just for myself but for others as well? Include links in the definitions to similar words. Let me explain: Today I looked up the word “admonition” in your app, and the noun meaning says “an act or action of admonishing”. Since I was not certain of what the word “admonish” means, I had to go back to the search bar in LookUpDictionary to search on the word “admonish”, to find its definition. Had there been a link to the word “admonish” in the definition section of the word “admonition”, I could have more easily tapped on such a link and been brought directly to the dictionary definition of the word “admonish”.
I certainly hope this email finds you all well. Have a wonderful weekend!!
Update to LookUp+ finally worked!

Update: changing my rating to 5 stars now that the update has worked. Great app!!
I have updated LookUpDictionary to version 9.5.1, but still can’t update to LookUp+ !!! Please fix this!!! Supposedly this update was to fix this exact issue yet I’m still not able to update… just get a spinning wheel indefinitely when I try to restore purchase. Will rate LookUpDictionary 5 stars when this issue gets resolved.
If you have the lifetime access for people that has bought LookUpDictionary a long time ago, you can restore your purchase. In LookUpDictionary , just tap on Discover on the bottom left scroll down and then tap under Store purchase. Then you will have all the features unlocked like you had before. LookUpDictionary is really great 😎🙌🏻👍🏻🌸🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠
Everything you want from a dictionary

I love LookUpDictionary and it always makes me happy when I open it up. It has all the meat and potatoes you want from a dictionary app: easy to use, complete and thorough, excellent origin details and Wikipedia info and a full thesaurus.
It's also very easy on the eyes with a beautiful minimalistic design that is fun and clever without being garish. Every time I come here to look up a word, I end up perusing. Couldn't recommend more.

I’ve never used a dictionary on my phone, but Look Up now gets daily use! LookUpDictionary functions perfectly and I have never run into a single bug in all my time of using it (~2yrs now, I had it back when it was a one time purchase). I came here just to give it a review after confirming the difference between two similar words (alternate vs alternative) & realized I hadn’t helped LookUpDictionary out after it’s helped me out so much. So cheers dev, thanks for a great app!
Continues to be a 5 star app.

2nd Update: It works now. Restoring to 5 stars. Update: Developers replied asking me to update to version 9.6.1. I did. I didn’t work. I bet there are no issues collecting those subscription fees though. First review: Really?!? Paying for LookUpDictionary wasn’t enough? Now you want a monthly subscription too? Stop spamming LookUpDictionary with your subscription model. You have to be a lummox (I learned this word with your app) to pay a monthly fee for what is basically a fancy dictionary / thesaurus.
Awesome app that adds to your day.

Fantastic App. Think I only had to pay once but I would pay a subscription to have LookUpDictionary further developed.
I would like to see more Apple Watch notification features. For example:
I would like to have the ability to adjust how many times I get notified a day and at what times. Learn through more repetition.
I would also like to have quizzes as notifications with adjustable frequencies and times.
Long term, could be fun to have Siri listen to user use the word in a sentence and verify.
Longer term, teach grammar? (Maybe another app) :)
It’s pretty good, for the words it includes. Thanks for allowing me to restore purchase from previous iPad. Unfortunately, it will not allow me to sync favorite words from my other device. Not a huge word base, but I like the UI and the amount of information included.
Great App with Room for Improvement

I love LookUpDictionary. One of the best dictionary apps I’ve come across. It’s beautiful, well-made, and easy to use.
The only things I’d improve do not hinder LookUpDictionary , so I still think it deserves five stars.
I’d like to see the following:
- Images/graphics added for more words (right now there are only a few and they are removed over time). - Better word recognition with the camera. It’s not something I really use, but even if I wanted to it doesn’t really work. - More learning options. I could’ve sworn there used to be options to study and test. Currently I see an option to learn. Would be nice to have a flashcard option. - An option to rearrange the tab bar would be nice. - More suggestions in search; right now the same words cycle.
Just a few ideas and suggestions, but overall this is a wonderful app.
Amazing app

This is the only app I’ve run into that makes consulting a dictionary appealing. I love the word of the day widget. I bought for macOS and iOS. Yes, there are free online dictionaries, but they don’t look anywhere as good as LookUpDictionary or encourage you to actually learn new words in the way lookup does. 100% recommended.
Best in class!!

Are use LookUpDictionary on my iPhone on my Apple Watch, and on my MacBook. After and recent minor issue where my collections were lost during an app update, I am now very confident that the developer has integrity and will seek quickly to correct any issues. This has given me confidence in continuing to use this excellent app. I love to use LookUpDictionary. Whenever I discover a word that I would like to add to one of my collections it is easy to get the definition and add it right away to either one or multiple collections. I love that on the MacBook version of LookUpDictionary I can export a PDF file of any one of my collections along with definitions. That allows me to export my own back up of my collections on a periodic basis and allows me to easily share my collection of words with someone else. My wife and I are able to each use LookUpDictionary because LookUpDictionary allows for family sharing. I greatly appreciate that and it adds more value to the subscription.
The best dictionary I’ve ever owned

This is a wonderful app! Love the full support of the features of iOS; the widgets are great, they’ve built in Siri commands, and robust features for thesauruses, translation, and etymologies.
I wish they had definition lookups for the words you get wrong in the quizzes they provide/curate (GRE Prep please!), and had an option to display one or two translations alongside/below the pronunciation guide! These couple of features would elevate the experience of the voracious consumers of information LookUpDictionary have been so satiated by so far!
I love LookUpDictionary! I love words and dictionaries. I own lots of dictionary apps. I teach English to non-English speakers, ESL. Contrary to another reviewer or two, I find this to be a unique, browsable, and helpful vocabulary builder. It's NOT a simple dictionary, a reference, that's not the best purpose - it's something to sit and spend time with. I wouldn't recommend it solely to use as a dictionary for quick look ups. I don't need such interesting distraction, I would stay in LookUpDictionary , get lost in words, and not get back to my work.
Also contrary to another reviewer, they are NOT words common to daily ordinary American English speakers. You may have at least heard many words, studied them for testing, and even gleaned the meanings from context. There will be words you've heard many times and may even use but you never looked them up yourself, those words you can use and describe with examples but cannot cite a definition. So it's very interesting.
You get visual imagery, etymology, grammar and related words. And links to more comprehensive definitions, a wiki. The presentation of each word is colorful and appealing without cartoonish sensibilities. By simply visually browsing you can learn, hone, or refresh your vocabulary without the tedium of drilling, memorizing, or winding thru long repetitious dictionary definitions.
A joyous moment

When you sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, and that moment is empty but not sad. You look around and want something interesting but not overwhelming to enter that space. The perfect space for “Lookup”! Try it. It surprised me. It is fun, valuable and a real contribution.
