It’s a gorgeous app. EXCEPT for the main tab bar not functioning like a normal Liquid Glass tab bar…and since it’s the main navigational component of AcmeWeather (besides scrolling) it makes the whole app feel incomplete.
Having the whole UI screen jump into a pop-up with a back button, when on the Community and Notifications tabs, feels incongruous with the idea of a tab bar.
Unfortunately, it’s enough to make me not like using it. It feels like the developers really wanted to avoid using a Liquid Glass bubble style tab bar…when that’s what they really should have just used. It’s like…half Liquid Glass.
The idea looks good. In theory. But just can’t justify adding yet another subscription. Especially at $25 a year. Maybe if there was a lifetime option or a free tier with ads.
This is inherently limiting, especially to an app that relies on community for reporting you are cutting out a huge number of people that would be helping report.
Feels bad when the only option is a free trial where you either locked into a subscription or just can’t use AcmeWeather anymore.. what if I want to try it again in two months.
AcmeWeather just feels so…basic. This isn’t inherently bad, but in a crowded weather app market, it needs something that sets it apart—and I just don’t see anything here that does that. There’s nothing here that isn’t available elsewhere for less, and it lacks meaningful customization options to tailor the experience.
I’ve tried at least a dozen weather apps over the past decade. If you’re planning to spend $25 a year, Carrot is a much better choice imo. The range of customization and features it offers is impressive. Hello Weather is another solid option—fewer features, but thoughtfully designed and, in my opinion, the best-looking app of the bunch. I would argue the “beautiful” claim of AcmeWeather, especially that icon.
Has a similar predictive model. Great user interface makes it easy to see the general weather in the future.
Doesn’t have the hyperlocal Dark Sky did. Acme is using NWS data. Which is to general and assumes everyone in “Reno” lives near the airport. For example, the right now temperature on Acme is from down in the valley at the airport in Reno, which is about 8-10 degrees warmer than where we are.
There are data sources using personal water stations from around my location that Acme could access to get more accurate local conditions.
I LOVED Dark Sky and was very upset when it went away. Since then I’ve been using Carrot and have got used to all of the great features it has. Would love to sub this but definitely need Family Sharing. Need to have Live Activites support for precipitation. Watch complication for hourly I would love to see have condition icons on top of the right now bland dots and temps (see Mercury). Would also love to have real detailed super res radar option as well. Hopefully it will get there. Routing for you! Love the community aspect as well. Very cool. Overall it looks great. Love the aesthetic.
Issues include map selection not saved, next 10 day view a bit out of sync with right now view. AcmeWeather icon itself NEEDS to change. it is so out of place for iOS and colors don't match rest of branding. the alternate predictions need better contrast. maybe the main forecast needs to be orange and the alternates more off-white-ish. i'm hoping the community reports pick up because that will have real value. only one rain icon which makes no sense since there should be options for drizzle/light, medium rain and heavy. it really feels like a beta release right now but likely will improve. I'm a sucker for a good weather app and their privacy policy makes this worthwhile.
it’s the first weather app i’ve used which doesn’t go aggro with the dark mode, allowing me to choose light mode, which means fewer migraines, BUT a lot of work and tapping and scrolling is needed to get to information other apps give you on a single screen. it’s worth keeping because of the appearance options, but perhaps we could more info on the main screen? i don’t like or use widgets (i’m old and hidebound, so sue me) so they aren’t a good alternative for me.
i’d also appreciate a swipe to change locations feature, though this is the most minor of minor quibbles.
I can only give AcmeWeather 4 stars right now, but it’s still real early in development. If features continue to improve and grow, it’ll easily become 5. I’ve been looking for something to replace Carrot Weather for a long time, as I’ve grown tired of that one. However, it’s so comprehensive and has everything you could ever want in an app, so replacing it has been impossible. Acme Weather *could* end up being that replacement. I appreciate that it already has notifications, and the design is absolutely beautiful. I’ve subscribed for the year, and hopefully by this time next year it’s grown even more capable.
After installing AcmeWeather , I saw that there were iOS Shortcuts actions…which I was excited about. I activated the trial only to see that those actions aren’t functional yet. I hope they are working soon.
The rest of AcmeWeather seems promising but I do wish there was a way to try AcmeWeather more without starting the 2-week trial (like get my current location but offer, for free, to show me weather from another city so I can see how valuable the predictions might be for my location).
Dark Sky is back from the dead! AcmeWeather is beautiful, which makes the ugly blue icon, and generic name stick out like a sore thumb. Hopefully we get some alternate icons soon, though the name is probably here to stay..
The $25 price point seems a little steep given the current feature set, but I’m willing to pay for a year to show my support and see how it works out vs. the Apple Weather app through Florida’s unpredictable summer weather.
I really loved Dark Sky because of its simplicity, sleek interface, and hyperlocal updates. Acme feels like a more streamlined version of Dark Sky and surfaces the information you need at the right times.
I love the alternate forecast information that shows the spread on possible futures. Sure some of the datasets are free typically, but the comparison feature is so useful that I think it’s worth the $2 a month. No ads either, and the map view looks amazing.
I am excited to see what future updates are to come. As long as they stay true to no ads, accuracy, and simplicity, I am sure it will be successful.
So happy to see a modern-day Dark Sky return! In the first month of it being available, AcmeWeather itself is exactly what I would have asked for: Dark Sky, but in 2026. Hoping to see building out more Watch complications (such as the corner spots on Wayfinder face, for example), iPad/Mac layout support, and widgets. Also…maybe a new icon. That said, moving off the Apple Weather app and back onto a clean, simple, accurate app for $25/year (seriously, why are some of y’all whining about ~$2/mo?) is such a welcome surprise. Even the real-time notifications are as accurate as they used to be. Welcome back, guys!
As of writing, AcmeWeather is brand new, and is admittedly lacking a lot of features compared to its more customizable cousins, such as Carrot Weather. However, it’s a very good start, with the same clean visuals and focus on hourly predictions that made Dark Sky great. It does desperately need more customizability on both the homepage and maps page (point soundings on the map page are a much-missed Carrot feature, as is the ability to view AQI data on the homepage without going to the maps page), but I’m staying subscribed for the first year to give the developers time to build out more features.
I love this new weather app. It focuses on forecast bands, not a single forecast. I was a huge fan of the Dark Sky weather app, and this Acme weather app retains the great features of Dark Sky - but goes well beyond. The statistically solid premise behind Acme is that forecast bands provide estimates of uncertainty around a single forecast. The bands, in short, provide additional information for the user. The interface and graphics are tremendous. The price is more than fair. Weather geeks will want to use AcmeWeather, for sure. To the developers, I say “great work, great idea - and full speed ahead!”
I really like Acme Weather and use it daily. One feature I would love to see is a modern medium-size Home Screen widget.
Since I can’t upload an image here, I’ll try to describe it clearly:
I’m looking for a medium widget with a bold, minimal design that shows:
• A very large current temperature number on the left
• The city name in small text above
• Big weather condition text (like “Partly Cloudy”)
• A clean modern weather icon on the right
• A horizontal hourly forecast bar at the bottom with temperature changes
Something with a flat, minimal, modern style would look amazing and premium. The medium size is perfect because it gives enough information without taking too much screen space.
Please consider adding more customizable widget designs in future updates. This would make AcmeWeather stand out even more.
Thank you!
This is a nice start to an attractive weather app. I think it will do well. In the meantime, I would encourage anyone interested to ignore the cheapskate morons who give AcmeWeather one star because it’s “deceptive” or “paywalled.” Learn to read before whining folks; the policy is pretty clear - you get a 2-week free trial, and then only pay if you want to keep it, otherwise just cancel. Easy! If you’re one of the people don’t like subscriptions, that’s ok - then go spend your money somewhere else, but dissing a nice app just because you’re too cheap to pay for it is dishonest. Some people actually don’t mind paying devs for quality work.
This is a great weather app. I’m an old DarkSky user, and I love seeing a new take on that approach to weather data (this is more and different, but similarly interesting and worth it). The main thing I like about AcmeWeather is its treatment of error bars in forecasting. Whether it is more accurate, I’m honestly not sure, but it feels better to see a range rather than a confident statement (especially when the confident statement is 0% change of rain but the reality is more like 5% all day…it makes a difference, actually!). Widget support is good, works OK on Apple Watch (could be better perhaps), would love native iPad + Mac support at some point.
First, I want to say a few things to those posting 1-star reviews:
It is expensive to run a weather service! $25 a year is very reasonable for its unique features. If the subscription cost is too high for you, then cancel the trial and move on. I applaud Acme for only offering one subscription option and avoiding a free ad-supported tier. It keeps it simple and straightforward.
I personally love the name Acme as it brings back memories of Wile E Coyote from the cartoon series. And I think the icon is great. It is unique and uncluttered. What do you want, another weather app with clouds or sun in the icon? In any case, I would imagine that future updates will offer user selectable icon choices. This is a 1.0 version, give it some time to mature!
I also had some issues with current temperature being way too high. I emailed support, they responded that they had made some changes and a couple of hours later the current temp seems spot on.
The UI is simple and creative, but not perfect. Again, this is a 1.0 release. Give it some time!
Regarding the lack of customization options, I applaud this. Many apps have way too many options and it is confusing to wade through it all. An excellent design makes the best choices to work well with the overall app philosophy and goals.
Now on to what makes Acme shine:
The "alternate predictions" are unique and a great idea. No forecast is 100% accurate, so it is nice to get a range when the uncertainty is high.
The built-in notification options are well thought out with some unique and fun choices. But the amazing part is that you can create totally custom notifications!
The overall UI defaults to displaying the most useful information at a glance, but a few taps here and there open up loads of detail.
I am VERY excited about Acme and can't wait to see where it goes.
All of the 1 star reviews are complaining about the required subscription costs. Every time you open AcmeWeather, it makes an API call that costs money. The only way a third party weather app like this can survive is if they have a one time charge for AcmeWeather and hope that enough new people continue to buy AcmeWeather to offset the cost of the ongoing data, or to have a subscription.
On opening AcmeWeather , I am immediately presented with a beautiful interface that strikes the perfect balance between information density, simplicity, and visual clarity. I like how AcmeWeather isn’t overly complicated, but still gives more than enough information for the vast majority of weather enthusiasts. The default UI focuses on all the things I find most important, and I’m not presented with a dizzying number of toggles and switches in the settings panel to drive my optimizing mind into overdrive. The granular, customizable notifications (umbrella alerts, sunscreen alerts, etc.) and alternate forecast lines and proprietary weather model are my favorite features and really set AcmeWeather apart from the many others I’ve tried. The Apple Watch app is pretty good as well and has everything I need while being a noticeable step up from the default Apple Weather app. I really like how the widgets show the relevant conditions as conditions change. Well worth the subscription.
Acme Weather is very safe to use.
