4.4 out of 5
What is wrong with the fights?

First off, I chose Normal difficulty. Let that be known.

I'm 30 minutes into the game, leveling up on the main map with Kain. Almost all of my fights start with a Surprised! or Back Attack! not in my favor.

Then I get into a fight and before I could even get one attack out there, four birds turned both my characters to stone and gave me a Game Over.

I got into another fight against those same 4 birds and barely won with Kain surviving. Now Kain is the leader with no obvious way of switching lead back to Cecil after healing him. (FYI, you do it on the game screen. You tap the character to change between party members)

Lastly, I have Auto enabled. And when I don't have Back Attack, and my ATB meter is full I should attack immediately. Not let my characters politely sit there and get hit by all 4-5 enemies before finally attacking. It might as well been Surprised or Back Attack at that point.

I don't know what you did to this game to create such frustration, but something needs to be done. I didn't choose Hard so it shouldn't be like this.

Get rid of those birds from the starting area is one idea. Lower the rate of Surprised and Back Attack is another. Change how fast Auto chooses my attacks.

And this is within the first 30 minutes of play!

A Relentless Assault on Your Sanity

Seasoned RPG fans beware, do NOT select "Hard" as your difficulty . The developers do not understand the difference between "challenging" and "frustrating". The game stops being fun REAL quick.

Bosses are overpowered while you, leveling up to even higher than recommended levels, are flailing to advance and relying on luck (the possibility that MAYBE they won't spam that status-altering or instant-kill attack).

This persists for the entire game. Temporary characters are cursed with Max Stats (they will level up, but don't expect anything to come from that). This is an issue because you are forced to face enemies that WILL kill them with one hit. Someone new joined your team? Better spend about 3-4 hours grinding. And even then, good luck.

Zeromus is WAY too far from the last save point. So get used to "rage quit" and "continue" or else get ready to have all your hard work undone. Even then, cut scenes may be skippable, but if any of them involve a "battle sequence", not only are you unable to skip those, but the dialogue is achingly slow and you have to sit through all of it. Over, and over, and over again.

Final Fantasy IV is one of the greatest video games on the SNES, and this port has some serious audacity to be using that name. This is a cold, joyless chore, and fans deserve better.

Hate it

I can't stand the ugly, half-a***d, silly 3D characters and environment. The original Super Nintendo version was beautiful, why do the characters have to look like prepubescent, cartoon, in-proportionate children? What is this, Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network?
I thought I could get past it when I bought it, but every time anyone speaks, or does anything for that matter in the game, the serious tone is ruined by the unavoidably foolish presentation. I just can't stand it.
I threw away my money. Don't buy this game if you have any sort of good taste.
If the devs want to port the original snes version without these nasty, ugly, childish, stupid graphics, I would pay 40 bucks for it: the game is a classic. Otherwise, unless you like playing a game that is written to be very serious and dark, but is ruined by your protagonist's cartoony head which is about 3 times larger than his emaciated body, don't buy it.

Don't Like This Version

This is a port of the DS version. If you're looking for SNES nostalgia be forewarned. The biggest drawback is the leveling doesn't work the same. Returning characters come back at set levels. As a result level grinding has to take place as you go rather than running solo work with Cecil on Mt Ordeals.
I also can't stand the perspective. You can't see as much of the world around you so running through dungeons and caves feels very claustrophobic.
There are some positives. I enjoy the cut scenes. There is also some balancing to compensate for the differences in leveling characters while they're not in the party. And I do enjoy the graphics. I also like being able to run.
All in all what I was looking for in a port for my phone to kill time here and there was a copy of the SNES version. This is not that. Thus my overall disappointment. I can't say if I will actually finish playing through. If not it was a waste of $15.

Difficulty is whacked

I would forewarn you to not select the Hard mode if you like to grind out levels to make the game easier for you. I put in about 8 hours of grinding levels in areas that gave good experience and I’m just barely surviving fights in that first tower you are trying to save Rosa from. I should be annihilating these enemies. So, my complaint is that enemies are overpowered and your characters are underpowered with both physical attackers and magic wielders. Even when using the correct strategy, you run into ridiculous situations where you quickly run out of MP points. Why in the hell does Tellah only have 90 MP points at level 36!? He’s got all these fantastic spells and he can’t use them without running out of MP super fast. And then to add insult to injury, they really string you along with Ethers so that you have to be oh so frugal otherwise you are out before you know it. You cannot buy them at least this far into game. You can only find them on maps. I hate how difficult they’ve made this. Hard work does not pay. There is simply no relief. I played this game on the Nintendo and it was never this hard. I’m sorry but they need to rebalance this game. Way too difficult to be fun. If I cannot even work hard to get ahead I’m going to lose interest really fast in this game. At least enable me to change difficulty to Normal without having to start new game.

Awful graphics

I hate this business model by SEnix where they completely change the graphic style of their old games. They either do what hey did with FF6 and restyle their sprites by making them goofy and blurry; or they do what they did with this game by making it look like it was made at the beginning of the N64's life. I would pay full price for remakes of these classics with just HD graphic upgrades and high quality sprites. Look at Final Fantasy Brave EXVIUS for how sprite graphics should look. Beautiful artwork that retains the personalities.

Tl:dr amazing story and nostalgic. Awful graphic style

Could be better

This game is great. It runs smoothly and has a good story. My main complaint is that when you die you nothing happens, you just reload right to where you started the battle. Besides the boss battles, you could literally lose every fight and still beat the game. This is bad game design. There needs to be some stakes in order for the game to feel challenging and fun. Also there should be a way to play the original SNES version on iOS. I like the old graphics and nostalgic feel better. This one looks kind of goofy and the voice acting isn’t great.

Love it But also Hate It

The story is really good and I love the battle system. What I really hate is that some bosses, like Dr. Lagae. I didn't do any level grinding up to that point and always loss the 3rd battle. I had to go back and level up. What I also find really stupid is, why in the world the DS version!? 1. ITS EXTREMELY UGLY 2. FOR DEVICES LIKE IPADS IT LAGS which makes the battle slow The PSP version looks much better and I don't care if it's in 2D. At least everyone didn't look like small *ss children. If they did PSP version, then there wouldn't be lag. Sometimes I find this game annoying because in the underworld, there are flamehounds. Their scorch attack really pisses me off because when you get ambushed, they all use the scorch attack (3 flamehounds: very common) the party dies. The thing I mostly care about is playing the game and carrying on with the story. I try not to pay attention to the graphics, but I can't. When the characters talk, I find it really funny, especially when Cid talks. His mouth is humongous and everyone else's mouth are so tiny. Overall, the game is decent.

Irritating

This game completely lacks the cursor memory setting which has been a standard in this series long before this, or even the DS port that this is based on, was released. This gets very irritating during longer boss battles, because you have to manually select the action you want every turn.

The auto battle feature, unlike the FFV iOS port, only repeats an action you determine in some relatively obscure menu before battle. The previously mentioned FFV's auto battle button repeats the previous action. All of these factors combine to make playing this game feel like a chore.

The "back" button in the battle menu is on the top right of the screen, while the action menu is on the bottom left. It's very inconvenient and unintuitive; I often find myself extremely frustrated.

I'm not a huge fan of the graphics of the DS remake but I'm not factoring that into my score, because, as far as the graphics go, I knew what I was getting when I bought this.

I'm pretty sure most of my problems with this version should actually be directed at the DS port, and most of these problems could easily be fixed. However, they still create unnecessary difficulty and....eh I don't feel like writing anymore. You get the point. I still give it two and a half to three stars because the game underneath these **** controls is solid.

Terrible Port Decision

Don't get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy IV. It's actually one of my favorite Final Fantasy games. However, I don't know why they chose to go with the DS port (slow frame rate with ugly graphics and stupid character design) instead of the PSP port (a visual remaster of the classic 2D game for the SNES). My biggest issue is the frame rate. It makes the battles much slower than they are, and it just isn't easy on the eyes. Also, I can't take any of the cutscenes in this game seriously because of the Wind Waker style models. Terrible port for a good game.

My first Final Fantasy That got me hooked

I heard Final Fantasy X was the best game my friends had ever played, so I wanted it really bad in the early 2000s, but instead, I got this game. Little did I realize how amazing it was, but after a little while, after playing all of them 1-11 (this is 2003) game, I kind of drifted away from the series. Then, I saw the remake of this game. I am thinking “THIS’LL BE AMAZING!” I got all the games a decade before this remake, and when I played this, I was disappointed. The port isn’t good, the difficulty is bad. What the heck happened to Hit9999 and Max Stats? However, the story is good, and I like how they added voices. Oh well, a few years after this I tried Type 0 and Fifteen and I actually DID get every game in the series.

Another Classic Final Fantasy

Great game. If you’ve played any of the other classic final fantasies (V-X), I wouldn’t rank this above any of those, but it is still a great game. As a huge final fantasy fan, I’m especially glad for this port because the only other way to play it was on Nintendo DS, which I don’t own. So thank you Apple, and as always, thank you Square Enix.

5 stars but one annoying bug not yet fixed

Is there some reason that the ???? Love Augment counter resets when you shared the save file from one device to another. I had ???? Love maxed. i saved the file to icloud and later opened it on my ipad, and the ???? Love augment counter reset to ZERO. this is NOT a new bug. it has done this since the beginning. FIX THIS for phux-sake.

Definitive version

I loved playing this game way back on the Super Nintendo, I must’ve played through dozens of times. So glad they updated the graphics and did justice to this title. I’ll play through this game about once every couple of years and it retains its replay value every time. Good challenges, great story and characters and the best soundtrack of any game, period. Also a plus is the expanded story bits about golbez and the translation is the best of any of the numerous ports of this game. A timeless classic JRPG and imho the best version of this game ever.

Wow

FF2 (as it was called back when it was released for SNES in the early 90s) was the first RPG I ever played. I was a little skeptical of this when I bought it, but 6 bucks isn't a big investment so I decided why not. This was an awesome play. I loved the fancy renderings of the dungeons that were so basic in the original version. I love that they added some dimension and backstory to the characters, and all in all it was a big improvement. The 3D characters were not cheesy or overly cartoonish and the voice acting was good. I was very impressed.

The monsters, on the other hand, were funky to me, specifically the difficulty and certain attacks (laser barrage, anyone?). I remember the final boss in the SNES version being extremely hard even though I had raised my characters to level 80+. I fought the final boss with all my characters' levels between 72 and 76 and I absolutely pwned him. He didn't even cast Big Bang. Just meteor once and everyone survived.

I was worried as I was going through the final dungeon when some of the enemies were laying waste to my party and I had to run from every battle during the last 3 levels, but no. Some random mobs hit much harder than the final boss which is weird, but everything else was great. Will definitely be playing through again.

Always come back to replay this

I have played this game start to finish probably a dozen times since I was a kid on the SNES until now. It’s timeless, from the soundtrack to the simple yet effective battle system.

Only thing I’d criticize is I feel it’s too easy. I’d really like to see a “Paladin” or “Dark Knight” mode, that is like new game+ but with more difficult mobs and modifiers.

All in all, this title, along with FFVI and FFVII (and Breath of Fire 2, seriously Capcom, release old breath of fire’s on iOS, DONT make me pirate your stuff) are my all time favorite games.

I prefer the spite style but this is the better version of from iv on iOS

The only thing that would make this version better is allowing the player to select between the pixel perfect graphics or these 3D graphics.

I enjoy the music in this version and it has controller support using a device like the Razer Kishi.

The game plays great and looks crisp on my iPhone XS, 11 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max. I would expect that just about any iPhone in recent years should be able to handle this game.

Great Game - Great Port - Deserves an Update

This game is fantastic, and I’d go so far as to say the experience is the best iteration so far. I have thoroughly enjoyed this game since I started playing it on iOS. It’s very intuitively set up with loads of improvements since it first released on iOS. I really hope this gets an update to support newer device size, even if it merely adds decorative bars to either side of the gameplay area.

Note to developers: Please don’t try to force a wider stretched view if FINALFANTASYIV3DREMAKE is updated. The port of Final Fantasy VI suffers greatly graphically because of the forced stretch. Having the option in FINALFANTASYIV3DREMAKE is huge and FF VI would benefit from the option as well.

5 Star But still have a complaint.

I’ve had this game on my iPad for a few years now but am writing this review because of a problem on my 3rd playthrough. I had always planned to try and get all of the augments and best armor and defeat the 2 hidden bosses. Apparently what I’ve read from blogs and have just experienced myself is that on the iOS version they Do Not give out a 2nd limit break augment when you start a new game on the 3rd playthrough. But they do on the DS I guess. Idk I’ve never played a DS.

Other than that I absolutely Love this version of my favorite rpg. I could play it over and over again forever. I know the story by heart and where all the treasures are these people who remade it did a perfect job I think. The music goes along perfectly with the story just as it did on the snes. Graphics are awesome too. I love going into the land of summoned monsters, looks great. The small changes to the script are fine and modern.

My Flagship

For all the Final Fantasy games that Square Enix offers for the iOS systems, I have every one of them. My favorite thing about all the Final Fantasy games are the journeys. FFIV is the flagship of my collection. I love the story of a conflicted warrior, who intends to do right, but finds that he must surrender his dark sword for that of the paladin. I also enjoy the movie cut scenes; it makes the game playing epic.
